    ENVIRONMENTAL

    MANAGEMENT

    SYSTEM

We all have the right to exploit our environment if

we are responsible for its protection; we each have

the opportunity to utilize our environment as long

as we recognize our obligation to improve it for the

    future of civilization.

    Implementing an environmental management

system in a manner similar to that proposed by ISO

14000 will ensure our rights, our responsibilities,

    our opportunities and our obligations.

    Every right implies a responsibility,

    every opportunity an obligation

    -John D. Rockefeller Jr.

    ISO Certification, Registration, and

    Accreditation

When an organization says that it is ISO

14000 certified or ISO 14000 registered,

it means that a third party entity has assessed

    its environmental management system

against the requirements of ISO 14001 (the

    EMS

In ISO language, accreditation is a different

process. It is the procedure by which an

authoritative body gives formal recognitionthat an organization or individual is qualified

to carry out ISO 14000 certification in

    specified business sectors.

it is incorrect to describe a company as ISO-

certified or ISO-registered, or to use phrases

like ISO certification, ISO certificates and

    ISO registration.

The ISO itself does not assess, certify, or register

    any organizations management systems.

ISO 14000 auditing and certification are carried

out independently of ISO by certification bodiesunder their own responsibility

    What the system says:

Doing business as usual is unacceptable.

Doing business without a systematic management approach iseconomic doom.

    Providing quality is key.

Protecting and nurturing the environment is key.

Doing it right the first time is crucial.

Getting your act together is essential.

Listening to customers and other stakeholders is absolutelynecessary.

    Respecting society is mandatory.

About ISO ISO (International Organization for

    Standardization) is the world's largest

    developer and publisher of InternationalStandards.

ISO is a network of the national standards

institutes of 163 countries, one member per

country, with a Central Secretariat in

    Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the

    system.

ISO is a non-governmental organization that

forms a bridge between the public and private

    sectors

On the one hand, many of its member institutes are

part of the governmental structure of their

countries, or are mandated by their government. On

the other hand, other members have their roots

uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by

    national partnerships of industry associations.

Therefore, ISO enables a consensus to be reached

on solutions that meet both the requirements of

business and the broader needs of society

    Why standards matter

Standards make an enormous and positive

contribution to most aspects of our lives.

    Standards ensure desirable characteristics of

products and services such as quality,

    environmental friendliness, safety, reliability,

efficiency and interchangeability - and at an

    economical cost.

When products and services meet our expectations,we tend to take this for granted and be unaware of

the role of standards. However, when standards are

    absent we soon notice.

When products, systems, machinery and devices

work well and safely, it is often because they meet

standards. And the organization responsible formany thousands of the standards which benefit the

    world is ISO.

What standards do make the development, manufacturing and supply

of products and services more efficient, safer and

    cleaner

facilitate trade between countries and make itfairer

provide governments with a technical base for

health, safety and environmental legislation, and

    conformity assessment

    products and services

    Who standards benefit

    and societal benefits.

What is EMS? A continual cycle of Planning, Implementing,

Reviewing, and Improving the processes and

action actions that an organization undertakesto meet its environmental obligations.

Systematic way of managing an organizations

    environmental affairs

    Based on Plan-Do-Check-Act Model (PDCA)

Focused on Continual Improvement of system

Addresses immediate and long-term impact of an

    organizations products, services and processes

    on the environment.

Does a lack of time or resources prevent your

    organization from managing its environmental

obligations effectively? Is the relationship between your organizations

EMS An effective EMS is built on TQM concepts.

Most EMS models [Including ISO 14000] arebuilt on the PLAN, DO, ACT, CHECK[PDCA] cycle.

Applying ISO 14000 and to initiate and sustainEMS effort, top management must communicateto all employees the importance of :

Making the environment an organizational priority[Thinking of an effective environmental management asfundamental to the organizations survival]

Integrating Environmental Management throughout theOrganization.[thinking about the environment as part ofproduct/service and process development and deliveryamong other activities]

    Flexible & Simple

An effective EMS is dynamic enough to

allow organization to adapt to a quickly

    changing environment .

    Compatibility with organization culture.

    Employee awareness & Involvement.

    Key Elements of EMSISO

14000 ISO 14001 is widely accepted international

standard for EMS that focuses on continualimprovement.

Companies may be asked to demonstrateconformance with ISO 14001 as a condition ofdoing business in some markets &

The standard is consistent with the key elementsfound in many EMS models, including theEuropean Unions eco management and auditscheme.

    Typical Example of EMS policy

We will comply with the environmental laws &

regulations and will strive to secure fundamental

reforms that will improve our environmental

effectiveness and reduce our cost of compliance.

We will consider environmental factors and the

acquisition and use and disposal cost when

    making Planning, Purchasing, and operatingDecisions.

Typical Example of EMS policy We will monitor Environmental Performance through

    regular evaluation.

Manage Land Water, wild Life and forest recourses in

    environmentally sensitive manner.

Use energy efficiently throughout our operations and

support the efficient use of coal, wood, & electricity.

Reuse and recycle whenever and wherever possible.

    Use Environmentally preferred materials.

Clean up residual pollution from past operations in cost

    effective manner.

    Business Benefits of EMS

Depending on the goals set by the company

that implements it, an EMS is intended to

produce a variety of benefits, from

    compliance with environmental law

reduced costs for energy, materials, and

    waste

    Streamlined operations

    improved image among regulators,

    consumers, and the ublic.

    Steps in Establishing an EMS

Step 1: Lay the Groundwork. Build

understanding and support for an EMS

among the organizations managers andemployees. Clarify why one is being

developed, who is the target audience, and

what environmental impacts will be tracked

  • 8/12/2019 Ems Presentation 2012

    10/13

    10

Step 2: Create an Environmental Policy.

    Review the organizations current methods

    for managing environmental concerns, and

where you want it to be. Perform a gap

    analysis that measures the difference

between current methods and the vision.

    Write the organizations environmentalpolicy statement

    Step 3: Determine significant environmental

    aspects, and set objectives. Environmental

aspects are activities, products, and services

that can interact with the environment.

Step 4: Evaluate alternatives. evaluate a wide

array of alternatives that can meet the

objectives set forth in step 3. Follow a

    hierarchy that emphasizes reduction first,

    then recycling, treatment, and disposal

Step 5: Set targets and measure success. Develop

targets for every significant environmental aspect of

the organization. Describe how you will meet a

goal, and develop ways to do so either by

    adopting alternatives, or instituting operational

    control procedures.

Step 6: Develop operational controls. In

some cases, you will need to implement tight

procedures to insure that activities are

controlled in ways that reduce environmental

impact. Measure the success of these

controls, and take corrective action when

    necessary.

    EMS Implementation Phases

    PHASE DESCRIPTION

Define Goals Clearly state why an EMS is being developed.

To comply with regulations? To improve

    environmental performance? To prevent

    pollution? To reduce potential liability?

    TopManagement

    Support

    .

To gain top management support, management must understand the benefits of

an EMS and agree with the goals. Support is

    necessary to obtain resources.

Structure EMS project must have a leader, with

    authority and skills.

    Implementation

    Team

Representatives from key areas to ensure

    ownership.
