I hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer, with ample time for relaxation and catching up on work! Before we know it, it will be time for the ASA meetings in San Francisco. Our section activities kick off on the first day of the meetings with our

reception at 6:30 Saturday night. We are once again co-sponsoring the event with the Social Psychology

Section, which means that we benefit from an economy of scale in selecting the food for the reception. From the Chair’s Desk Continued

Rebecca is a “co-convener” (roughly equivalent to co-chair) of the Australian Sociological Association’s Section on Emotion and Affect (TASA-SEA). I have asked Rebecca to participate in the Chair’s Hour in hopes of building greater collaboration between our groups. Rebecca will also be attending the reception, so there will be multiple opportunities to talk with Rebecca and find out more about TASA-SEA and the research conducted by its members.

The Business Meeting will be held at 3:30 on Sunday, immediately following the Chair’s Hour. Here we will recognize the recipients of our section awards. As previously announced, Eva Illouz is receiving the Outstanding Recent Contribution Award for her book Why Love Hurts: A Sociological Explanation. Long Doan, Annalise Loehr, and Lisa Miller will be presented with the Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award for their paper "The Power of Love: The Role of Emotional Attributions and Standards in Heterosexuals." Read more about these works on pg. 5. Finally, be sure to attend the Sociology of Emotions Roundtable at 2:30 on Monday. This session is co-sponsored with the Social Psychology section. There are a number of emotion-focused papers sprinkled across the nine roundtables, and one session is dedicated to the topic of “Emotions and Theory Construction.”

Following the ASA meeting, our newly elected section officers will begin their terms. Karen Hegtvedt is our incoming Chair-elect, and Shane Sharp will be our new Secretary-Treasurer. New Council members are Amy Kroska, Alicia Cast, and Matt Andersson (student member). Congratulations to our newly elected officers and thank you to all who stood for election. Thanks also to our Nominations committee: Ellen Granberg (chair), Christopher Bail, Sarah Harkness, Cathryn Johnson, and Gretchen Peterson.

Since this is my final newsletter, I would like to welcome Linda Francis as the incoming chair and also thank all of the current council members (Ellen Granberg, Lisa Walker, Kathryn Lively, Lauren Rivera, Lindsey Westermann Ayers, Amy Wilkins, and Jessica Leveto) for their work throughout the year. A special thanks to Amy Wilkins, who is ending her three-year term as Secretary-Treasurer. In this position, Amy has managed our section account, produced financial reports, handled payments and reimbursements, and ordered plaques for our award winners. Next time you see Amy, please thank her for all of her hard work on behalf of the section.

2014  Sociology  of  Emotions    Outstanding  Recent  Contribution  Award

This  year,  the  Outstanding  Recent  Contribution  Award  Committee  considered  nominated  books  published  in  the  last  three  years.  With  thanks  to  the  committee,  James  Jasper  and  Alicia  Cast,  I  am  pleased  to  announce  that  we  have  selected  Eva  Illouz’s  book  Why  Love  Hurts:  A  Sociological  Explanation  as  this  year’s  winner.  We  had  a  number  of  strong  nominees,  but  Dr.  Illouz’s  book  stood  out  for  its  nuanced  and  deeply  sociological  approach  to  the  issue  of  difficulties  in  modern  romantic  relationships.  By  Lisa  Walker,  Chair  Outstanding  Recent  Contribution  Award  Committee

Congratulations to Pam Kirk on her promotion to Associate Professor with tenure at the University of West Georgia.

Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award Winners

Long Doan, Analise Loehr & Lisa Miller

“The Power of Love: The Role of Emotional Attributions and Standards in Heterosexuals”

The 2014 Sociology of Emotions Section Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award Committee (Jessica Collett, Linda Francis, and Pam Hunt-Kirk) is happy to announce that this year’s winners are Long Doan, Annalise Loehr, and Lisa Miller for their paper "The Power of Love: The Role of Emotional Attributions and Standards in Heterosexuals.” The paper examines heterosexuals’ attitudes about granting homosexuals three types of social resources: (1)“informal privileges”/public displays of affection, (2) “formal rights”/right to partner benefits, and (3) “legal rights”/right to marry).

The researchers used a nationally representative sample to measure how heterosexual respondents attribute love to heterosexual, gay, and lesbian couples differentially. Additionally, they investigate whether the difference in attribution predicts respondents’ attitudes about granting homosexual couples social resources.

To do so, they randomly assigned respondents to one of three vignette conditions. The brief vignettes describe a couple (whose names and associated personal pronouns vary by the couple’s sexual orientation) in love and a bit about their relationship. Respondents then rate how much “in love” they believe the couple to be. Following this, respondents were asked whether the couple should receive “formal rights,” which include partnership benefits (e.g., family leave, hospital visitation, inheritance rights, and insurance benefits), “informal rights,” (e.g., telling others they are in a relationship, holding hands, kissing on the cheek, and French kissing in a park), and “legal rights” (i.e., allowed to legally marry).

First, the researchers found that the heterosexual respondents consider gay couples significantly less in love than heterosexual couples and lesbian couples. In general, the researchers found that higher attributions of love results in increased approval of social resources. However, this varies based on the type of resource. Specifically, while respondents approve of granting same-sex couples formal rights, they are less approving of granting gay and lesbian couples informal rights and marriage.

The committee agreed unanimously that the paper is well written, makes an interesting contribution to the field, makes good use of emotions theory, and that the researchers utilized rigorous methods and analyses to reach their findings.

Congratulations to Long, Annalise, and Lisa! The award will be formally presented during our section business meeting at ASA.
