Principal’s Report

Wakakirri/Energy Breakthrough Wakakiri is Australia’s largest performing arts event for primary and secondary schools. We are very fortunate that Michelle Di Camillo has decided to put a team in this year and has been working hard with students to develop a dance story that reflects their thoughts, ideas and aspirations around a particular topic. This creative reflection will then be performed at the Ulumbarra Theatre in front of an official Wakakirri panel who will be searching for the ‘Story of the Year’. As a result, Energy Breakthrough will not be running this year - it is hoped that we will resume this program again in 2020. School Wide Positive Behaviour Support School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework that helps to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that includes the explicit teaching of expected behaviour. The Department has been supporting schools across Victoria to participate in the training of this initiative because when implemented well, it helps to promote:

increased respectful and positive behaviour

increased time focused on instruction

improved social-emotional wellbeing

positive and respectful relationships among students and staff

increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices

a predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance

Brittany Shannon is coordinating SWPBS and has been working with students and teachers to develop an Expected Behaviour Matrix that will be implemented across specific locations in the school. A draft of this will be available for parent feedback before it is implemented. Trivia Night

Thank you to all parents, staff and community members who helped to support the Trivia Night. Once again, it was a success

and the table decorations reached a new level this year. All money raised on the night went towards State Schools Relief -

who were extremely appreciative to receive the funds that totalled $1081. Please see the attached file for further information

that explains how State Schools Relief support students in schools across our state.

Curriculum Day A curriculum day will be held on Monday the 15th of July – which is the first day back in Term 3. Teachers will be involved in

professional learning that aims to further develop their understanding of the VCOP writing framework, and exploring a new online tool

called ‘Learning Place’ that is designed to give students more voice in their learning. Strathfieldsaye Primary School has volunteered

to become a pilot school during the launch of this exciting new initiative as we continue our commitment to building student agency,

voice and leadership.

Principal’s Report continued. Strathfieldsaye PS Spring Fair The fair committee have been developing ideas for the launch of the Spring Fair that will take place on the 11th of October in Term 4. The committee are looking for parents who would willing to help organise classroom stalls. This may involve wrapping lucky dips or grocery grab items, facilitating baked potato ingredients etc. If you would be willing to assist please let Bec Soulsby know via email ([email protected]) or at the front office.

Like other schools, we rely on sponsorship support and donations from individuals and companies. The committee are currently searching for sponsors/donations for our fair. Sponsorship supports our major raffle, silent auction as well as a number of exhibits and activities on the night. If you know of anyone in our school community who would be willing to support our fair please find the sponsorship letter attached to this

newsletter for further information.

The next fair meeting will be held in the staff room on Thursday the 18th of July at 9:15 – please feel free to come along.

School Drop off and Pick Up We have had a number of complaints from parents regarding unsafe drop off and collection of students from the front of the school. Please ensure vehicles DO NOT stop and park directly on Uxbridge Rd. Please use carparks provided. Newsletter For you reference copies of the current and previous newsletters can be found directly on Compass under the Community Tab (People Icon) then under School Documentation. Class Awards

There are no class awards to be presented at this weeks assembly, however the Dower Award will be presented. The Dower Award is a term

based award given to a student who represents the Strathfieldsaye Primary School Foundation Value of CARING. This term the award is

presented to Taylor Coates.

Taylor is a very kind and loyal friend. He demonstrates the school caring value in many different ways: he helps his friends if they

are hurt, he includes everyone in the games he plays and he always speaks nicely to everyone. Within the classroom Taylor always

tries his hardest and listens to teacher advice. Taylor is always happy to work with anyone of his classmates and cooperates with

his partners or group to complete the task to their best ability.

Once again thankyou to the Dower Family for donating this award.

Mrs Bruechert on leave As Mrs Bruechert is currently on leave, I will continue in the acting principal role until she returns and Sietske Penno will also maintain her role as acting assistant principal. Please feel free to direct any communications, concerns or queries our way during this time. Last Day of School

Tomorrow will be our last day for Term 2. There will be an assembly at 9:15 am to present the Dower Award, please note that there will be no

classroom awards this week. Students will be dismissed at 2:30 pm – with the usual earlier bus arrangements made for the last day of term.

Kind Regards, Julie Ladd - Acting Principal

The rehearsals for Wakakirri are now well under way and the students are having a great time working on

their dance routines. Tickets will be directly available from the Ulumbarra Theatre from July 5th .

Grade 6 have been looking at Pop Art and have been creating “Pop Trash” Collages. These are made from collections of found objects and recycled materials. The subject is Popular Culture of our time.

Many of our students have been exploring the Terracotta Warriors. And here is more information about the exhibition in Melbourne which could be an ideal destination for family holiday time. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see a selection of China's terracotta warriors, discovered in China's Shaanxi province. The life-sized warriors are accompanied by horses and chariots, and a large collection of precious objects including priceless gold, jade and bronze artefacts dating from the Zhou dynasty (1050 – 256 BCE) through to the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). These precious artefacts are presented in parallel with work by the contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, whose exciting and dynamic works connect China's ancient history with China today.
