Year 7 Your Life you Choose On Wednesday 16th March 2016 our Year 7 students attended the Your Life You Choose day presentation set up by local magistrates. Students attended five workshops throughout the day ran by magistrates, police, the prison service, youth justice and victim support. The ses-sions aim to deter young people from a life of crime by making them aware of the conse-quences of crime, not only for themselves if they become offenders but also the effects it will have on their parents, friends and victims. The students reported that they really enjoyed the day, learnt a lot about crime and the laws applicable to young people and what it’s like to be in prison. Many thanked the workshop leaders for taking the time to come in and teach them. The workshop leaders also commended our year 7s on their behaviour, eagerness to learn and engage and the unique questions they asked.

Get tickets for The Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge Grand Final at indigo at The O2 in London on Sun, 20 Mar 2016 - 19:00 at AXS.com Ms Carey 2016 Hounslow Teen Read Award Ceremony – Tuesday 15th March Following a couple of short meetings for the Hounslow Teen Read, 17 of us headed off to the Paul Robeson theatre in Hounslow on Tuesday. As the Elthorne group we had voted for our three favourite books and we were all excited to find out the winner. However, beforehand we had a talk by Anthony McGowan, author of books such as Hellbent and The Knife That Killed Me. He was really engaging and had lots of interesting things to say to the aspiring authors in the audience. After the talk, it was the moment we had all been waiting for. The winner of the Teen Read was to be re-vealed. Although not all books had got a warm reception (one or two had even been considered to be used to scrape up sick), there was one that had touched all the readers and really stood out for being an interesting and distinct book about Transgender teenagers. This was a book that stood out for being the first of its kind which I’m sure will usher in new waves of LGBT books that will raise awareness at a younger age. This book was called the Art of Being Normal and it won by a landslide vote. The Teen Read was a really interesting event that was a great opportunity for less known authors to get their names out. Equally, it was great to meet with other people interested in books and reading, to discuss what book should win. I really enjoyed meeting the authors Dave Cousins and Anthony McGowan too as they both had a distinctive style of writing which really showed up in their talks. Fergal Jeffries, 9E

DEMOLITION WORKS COMMENCE
Demolition of the existing building
The New Year saw the commencement of the project with the demolition soft strip starting on Monday 4th January 2016. The soft strip involves the removal of materials such as doors, timber, flooring etc. all of which can be recycled and re used by others. Once all the recyclable materials had been removed from the building, the demolition of the building structure commenced. We chose to demolish the building using specialist demolition machinery, rather than take the building down by hand. This eliminates the need for people to enter the demolition zone, which eliminates the risk to their health and safety.
Dust Buster machines were used to supress any dust generated during the demolition process. These machines are capabale of throwing a mist of water up 60m
Groundworks
Groundworks
The groundworks commenced in mid February with the installation of the deep drainage runs. We had to excavate to a depth of 2.5m along the perimeter of the site. We have are now carrying out the formation of the ground to receive the new building foundations. This involved excavating up to 2m deep to expose the gravel layers before backfilling with clean selected stone to form the base for the slab foundation. Underslab drainage installation is on-going and we will commence pouring the first concrete foundations week commencing 14th March 2016.
Future works
The groundworks will continue for the next six weeks with the installation of drainage and pouring the new foundation slab. During this period there will be four days where we will be pouring concrete and we envisage about twenty concrete wagons coming to site on thse days. The movement of vehicles will be managed by our traffic marshalls, who are clearly identified in orange protective clothing. At all times we will avoid traffic movements during school start and finish times. At the end of April, we will have finished the foundations and we will bring the timber frame panels to site. These panels are fabricated in Austria by Elk Systems.
