101:4.1.3.5. In every occupied building or structure, means of egress from all parts of the building shall be maintained free and unobstructed. No lock or fastening shall be permitted that prevents free escape from the inside of any building other than in health care occupancies and detention and correctional occupancies where staff are continually on duty and effective provisions are made to remove occupants in case of fire or other emergency.
Electronic Locking and
Exemption Request Form Training
What are we going to cover today? Basic use of The Life Safety code to determine requirements. Basic Locking requirements of NFPA 101 core and occupancy
chapters Minimum Requirements of compliant locking systems as defined
by: NFPA 101:7.2.1.6.1 - Delayed-Egress Locking
NFPA 101:7.2.1.6.2 - Access-Controlled Egress Doors. Submittal for the installation and the interconnection of the locking
system with approved fire alarm and sprinkler systems as required by the above sections of the code.

A.7.2.1.1.3 Although 7.2.1.1.3 and 7.2.1.5.1 permit locking of means of egress doors where a building is not considered occupied, the Code does
not intend to permit occupants to be locked beyond their control in buildings or building spaces, except for detention and correctional occupancies and
health care occupancies.

Use of the Code
Why does the code regulate locking? Ensure occupants can ALWAYS exit the building in
an emergency, without delay.
How to I find the requirements in the code? The code is split into Core and Occupancy Chapter
requirements Core Chapters 1 through 10 cover all general requirements Occupancy Chapters 11 through 42 provide specific
requirements and exceptions, and reference the applicable requirements of the Core Chapters
