As well as items of uniforms & lunch boxes/drink bottles, we have the following in lost property: A winter tunic in a clear “Mix Apparel” plastic bag; a pair of

metal framed prescription glasses; a pair of brown framed reading glasses; a Toyoto car key, a blue (house?) key on a ring with a ½ soccer ball & pink ribbon; a key with smiley faces on a ring with an apple; a black & white mouthguard in a grey case. Please contact the office should any of these

items belong to you.

On Sunday we held our planting day picnic and BBQ. 33 EHPS families sponsored 76 trees to be planted in the bush area behind, and the terraces below, the middle oval. The school, funds raised from the plant sponsorships and Pittwater Council provided another 224 plants and grasses that were also planted in the bush and along the bottom oval path to school. We had a great turnout of over 60 kids, mums, dads, staff and Councillors to help weed, plant, dig and rake which made for light work and loads of fun. There was a great feeling of community

spirit, laughs and smiles all round. Please head down to the bottom oval and take a look at the new planting. It will look spectacular as it grows.

Special thanks to mums Emily Munday and Selena Griffith for planning the planting and organising the day, Mr O'Reilly for aerating the grounds on Friday and all the mums, dads, kids and staff who helped plant, weed, landscape and man the BBQ.

Champion Girl Success Jessica T, Tara S and Emily P participated in the Bjelke Peterson ‘Champion Girl’ Zone Competition last Saturday. Both Tara and Emily progressed from their heats to the finals. Emily P was placed second in this important competition and will now compete in the Bjelke Peterson ‘Champion Girl’ National Competition at the State Sports Centre in November. Congratulations to all three girls for participating and best of luck Emily for this next prestigious competition. Ms Bosler

Premier’s Sporting Challenge 2012 On Friday, 21

st September, 2012 (the last day of Term 3), the Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) for

2012 officially ends at Elanora Heights PS for this year. We will have completed the 10 week challenge and our results will be submitted to the PSC Team shortly. This has been our fourth year of participating in this annual challenge and we are hoping for our best results yet. Hopefully even more students in K-2 will achieve a gold certificate and even more students in Years 3-6 will achieve a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond certificate depending on time spent engaged in physical activity on a daily basis.

Page 4: Elanora Heights Public School Newsletter · worked so very hard to make improvements to our school. More thanks I would like to thank Richard Hazard and his team of workers who assisted

The 2012 Learn to Lead (L2L) team has done a great job supporting the students’ efforts by organising regular opportunities for students, particularly in Years K-4, to participate in physical activity during second half lunch on Mondays -Thursdays. The L2L team has enabled more students to ‘clock up’ more twenty minute periods of physical activity to record on their individual PSC logs. The PSC is a key strategy which supports our global Live Life Well at School (LLW@S) program at Elanora Heights PS. Physical Activity and Nutrition are the two foundational elements of the LLW@S Program. The PSC certificates will be sent to school in November and will be placed in students’ Blue Folders. It will feature the statistics for this year’s participation rates as they are made available to the school. We will participate again in 2013.

Thank you for encouraging your child/children to take up the PSC challenge which has far reaching, positive effects on the immediate and future health and lifestyle of our students.

Ms Vicki Bosler PSC Facilitator and LLW@S Committee Member

Seeding Grant Success Lauren H, Luke S and Ms Bosler (in Mrs Cullen’s absence) represented the school at the Northern Sydney Health Promoting Schools ‘Seeding Grants 2012’ Presentation. Lauren and Luke were selected to represent Elanora Heights Public School due to their diligent efforts with, and commitment to, the school’s ongoing composting program. This special presentation was held at Kimbriki Eco House and Garden Education Centre at Ingleside

last Friday, 14th

September, 2012. Lauren and Luke accepted a cheque for $1000 on behalf of the school as

a result of a successful submission written by Mrs Cullen last term for a Northern Sydney Health Promoting Schools ‘Seeding Grant 2012’. This submission supports the

‘Live Life Well @ School’ program. Student representatives from each successful school briefly outlined the program for which their cheque had been granted. This was a wonderful opportunity for Lauren and Luke to hear from other students about what other schools in the region are doing regarding sustainable and environmentally sound programs and/or the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles. Following these presentations, refreshments were provided. It was a highly engaging and inspirational morning as we marvelled at all the innovative programs happening in schools across the region.

HELP!! ****ATTENTION ALL PARENTS*** When the Uniform Shop first became computerized, we relied on the generous

donation of parents in the school community to provide us with pre-loved laptop,

software, printer, etc. Our 10year old (but very faithful) laptop is now

forced to be retired and our computer experts have warned it could be two

days or two months before it fails completely! We urgently need you help to upgrade

our computer before the Kindergarten orientation and Summer rush which is the

busiest time of the year. If anyone can donate a pre-loved laptop and/or basic MYOB

software, it would be wonderful. Any suggestions or options would also be very welcome. Please contact: Suzie Duncan on 0417 260 482. Thank you. Uniform Shop Coordinator

BUSHWAHZEE Bush Cabaret

When: 20th September 4:30pm-7:30pm

What is it? Bushwahzee is a bush band that is coming to teach and perform

at EHPS, helping us present a fantastic performance involving every student! The whole school will learn to dance, play musical instruments and sing bush songs during the school day on Thursday. Students then go home at the end of the day and return in “bush clothes” (jeans & shirts etc.) with their families. From 4:30 pm onwards a sausage sizzle dinner with drinks and ice creams will be on sale for those who wish to support this great P&C fundraising initiative. The performance will start at 6:00pm in the K-2 playground. Children will need to be back at school by 5:50pm to have names marked off by their teacher. If your child is going home with another parent teachers will need a note from you letting us know!! Families are encouraged to bring picnic rugs and fold up chairs. Limited chairs provided.

There will be NO Parking available on school grounds. The boom gate will be

closed at 4:30pm. We apologise for this inconvenience but for a whole school event we

have no other alternative. Please be considerate to our neighbours when parking near their

homes.

Bushwazeeeeeeeeeeeeeee This Thursday the Bushwazee runs from 5pm with food available from 4.30pm. To allow Thursday afternoon Senior Band members the opportunity to join the festivities from 4.30pm, brass and woodwind will combine from 3pm to 4pm for rehearsal. Children are expected to be collected from rehearsal by a responsible person. If you intend to allow your child to attend the

Page 6: Elanora Heights Public School Newsletter · worked so very hard to make improvements to our school. More thanks I would like to thank Richard Hazard and his team of workers who assisted

Bushwazee prior to their collection please send a note to Frances so she can release the student. Please note that Frances has a duty of care to her students and this care is taken seriously. Frances will be on hand for her regular tuition and students who normally finish rehearsal at 5pm can stay on with her until they are collected at their normal time. We trust this makes it a bit easier for parents who cannot change their regular schedule. The boom gate to the school driveway will be closed for all entering traffic from 4.30pm. The gate will open automatically for all exiting traffic.

Next Term Beginners continue band rehearsal as two distinct groups on Tuesday, 9 October.

Woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion) will rehearse in the demountable from 3.15pm

to 4.15pm.

Brass (trumpet, trombone, euphonium and drums) will rehearse in the demountable from 4.15pm to

5.15pm.

Senior Band continues with their Term 3 program. Brass will rehearse from 7.30am to the morning bell commencing Tuesday, 9 October. Woodwind will rehearse from 7.30am to the morning bell commencing Wednesday, 10 October. Thursday rehearsals: Brass at 3pm and Woodwind at 4pm, will commence on Thursday, 11 October.

Band Committee Meeting The holiday break may be an opportune time to consider serving on the Band Committee next year. All positions are declared vacant at the AGM and parents can nominate for any or (if you’re really keen) two or more positions. We have vacancies for a Treasurer and Vice-President.

The Band Committee next meet at 7pm in the staffroom on Tuesday, 9 October. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting and if you are interested in serving this will be your last opportunity this year to see a gifted group of people in action (true).

Holiday Break On behalf of the Band Committee I wish all band members, their families and EHPS

in general a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Special thanks are extended to all who have contributed to an extraordinary Term of music; to the parents who have assisted with supervision and other tasks, Frances for her music, the players for their herculean efforts and achievements, tutors, the ever helpful office staff at school and the teachers who champion the Band. We look forward to your company next Term.

Tim Cowdery, Band President

A message from the P&C ...

P&C Chocolate Drive Every family is encouraged to sell 1 box of chocolates; these will be available for collection at the Bushwahzee event on the 20th September. You can opt to pay for the chocolates (via cash or credit card) on receipt or simply send the cash into school after selling them.

If every family sold 1 box of chocolates we would raise over $8000. We look forward to seeing you on the 20th to collect your box of chocolates.
