PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends, Thank you for your support over what has been a very difficult week across NSW. Our thoughts are with our families, friends and colleagues dealing with devastating loss and hardship due to the bush fire state of emergency. We are extremely grateful to those courageous men and women who assist on the front line.

As you are aware, we have postponed our Elaninja Warrior event to Monday December 2nd and we thank you for your understanding. Community safety was the priority in the decision made and I thank Laura Smith, Kylie Grewal, Jono Rosconi and the team at Obstacool inflatables for the efficient manner in which this decision was made and communicated.

We are looking forward to hosting the event in Week 8 and thank the community for their strong support in fundraising.

Working BeeThank you to the team of amazing parents and students who gave up their Sunday on November 3 to paint our 3-6 and hall bathrooms. It was an enormous task and the results are incredible! Students are delighted and they are looking forward to the final stage, the application of positive message decals on the doors. A massive thank you to Sally Walters, Bridget Bullock and Janine Ralston for their vision and coordination of the day, along with the many families who attended. We are very grateful.

Unfortunately, despite this extensive work and numerous conversations with our student body regarding respectful behaviour in the toilets, I am sad to report that we are still encountering daily behaviours including graffiti which are completely disrespectful and unacceptable. Please support us by continuing these conversations with your children at home. We require a united approach to tackle this problem.

We have recently been advised that our K-2 toilets will be upgraded in the near future, along with extensive repair work and internal painting being completed throughout the remainder of this term and into the summer holidays. We are looking forward to coming back to a fresh new look in 2020 with new rooves, toilets and freshly painted classrooms to enjoy.

Maths Challenge CampLast Monday and Tuesday Laurinda Lomas hosted a Maths Challenge Camp for students across the northern beaches at the Elanora Conference centre. Thank you to Dave Waters, Dani Levido and Mel Rahme who also attended. We are fortunate to have staff willing to contribute so significantly to supporting student learning and thank these teachers for their time over the two days. A fun time was had by all! Please see Laurinda’s report on page 4.

Remembrance DayThank you to Jack Tier and our student leadership team for their coordination of Remembrance Day on Monday. All staff and students acknowledged this very significant event with a minute’s silence and a short presentation by the team.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Class Formation for 2020Class formation for 2020 will commence very shortly, This is the last week to provide any additional information you may feel necessary for consideration. As always, teachers are best placed to make sound decisions for the placement of your child as they have been working with them throughout the year. Class composition takes into consideration a number of factors including, but not limited to:

• Interpersonal relationships of students

• Personalities of students

• Matching students to particular teaching approaches/styles

• Level of student academic support required

• Additional relevant information provided by parents where appropriate

• Gender balance where possible.

We thank you for the trust placed in our staff to complete this process to promote a successful learning environment for all students in 2020.

Kindergarten Orientation ProgramOur Kindergarten Orientation program is nearly complete, with the final Parent Information Evening on November 19 at 6:30pm in the library. This event is for parents only. It involves our new parents rotating through a variety of small group sessions, facilitating an opportunity to meet key people within the school and find out more information about our school routines.

The 3 orientation sessions were incredibly successful and we thank Louise Shea, Lauren Mason, Maria Sherwood, Hayley Prior, Claire Hurley, Cybele Mannell, Belinda Cullinan, Kelly Galluzzo and our wonderful senior student helpers for ensuring they ran so smoothly. The final session was presented by Vivenne Hughes and Donna French from the GOT IT! team on Transition to School, which was very well received by our incoming parents. We will be scheduling parent workshops on emotion coaching and managing anxiety again early next year, so look out for these dates when they are announced.

Helpers Morning Tea – November 26 at 11am in the StaffroomWe are blessed to be supported by many, many helpers from our community, including parents, scripture and ethics teachers, grandparents and retirees who like to give them time. On November 26 we are inviting all of these wonderful people to a special morning tea to thank them for their significant contribution to our school. If you have helped out in any way this year, please come along so that we can thank you. Invites have been sent out, however sometimes they don’t make their way to you….please come along anyway! We hope to see you there.

Parents and Citizens Association AGMFor those of you who do like to contribute to the school, or perhaps just find out more about what we do, we invite you to attend our annual AGM and final P & C meeting of the year on Wednesday November 27, commencing at 7pm in the staffroom. Attending our P & C meetings is an excellent way to contribute and have your say on important school issues. We hope to see you there.

As always, we thank you for your ongoing support of our students, staff and community.

Until next time, Leesa Martin Principal

MATHS CHALLENGE CAMPLast week a group of our Year 5 students were invited to attend the Maths Challenge Camp. Our two goals at MCC were to work like a mathematician, and to make a new friend. I am happy to report that both were achieved :))

Working like a mathematician means students:- define the problem- experiment- collect and organise data- seek a pattern- hypothesise and test- reflect .

The tasks students were engaged in over the two days generated a lot of discussion and deep thinking about big ideas

in mathematics. They are designed to reflect the theories and patterns generated by eminent mathematicians. Most used the principles of space and geometry to promote the search for patterns and relationships. The culminating task brings all these ideas together as the students work together build a life size geodesic dome - so exciting!

All of our students were a credit to themselves - they were friendly, well mannered and

open to learning. We were so excited to watch them explain their thinking and generate ideas.

I would like to thank all the fabulous teachers at camp for helping me to make this such a positive mathematical and social experience: Tom Davidson (Belrose PS), Amy Tier (Mona Vale PS), Anna Walter (Newport PS), and David Waters, Dani Levido and Mel Rahme (Elanora Heights PS). Their passion and dedication is what makes this camp possible.

.. WARRINGAH MALL PERFORMANCE Just over a week ago all students in the Music Program travelled to Warringah Mall with many performing on the open air stage as part of a musical festival organised by Mall Music. It was a great experience for our Orchestra, Training Band and Senior Band to entertain the crowd in the food court. Our touch of Halloween injected a bit of spooky fun.

The students who stayed on to watch the movie afterwards thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The starring violin and double bass were a great bit of musical fun in the movie. Thanks to Mr Tier for his organisation of the event and Ms Rivas for her help on the day. Thank you also to the parents who transported children back to Elanora, experiences like these are not possible without volunteers. Many thanks to our dedicated Senior Band conductor Rachel Rule for all her efforts getting the additional instruments to the mall and back to school.

TERM 4 GROUP BAND LESSONS & TRAINING BAND 2020Term 4 Group lessons are well underway and feedback from both, students and tutors is that they are having heaps of fun and progressing really well. We are looking forward to having these students join our training band next year. If you know of someone who is interested in learning a band instrument or joining Training Band next year it is not too late to join please encourage them to email [email protected] for more information.

STRING BEANS 2020We have 17 excited String Beans joining our program next year with Mark Stevens stepping into the role of conductor for the String Beans, continuing his great work with these current Year 1 students. END OF YEAR CONCERTS

.How quickly are the years going past? To think it was a year ago that the new playground was completed on the bottom oval. Now it’s just like a piece of the furniture that has always been always there. With the warm weather we know the end of year social season is about to hit us like a wave at the beach so before it does now is a good time to think about next year.

In less than two weeks we will have our P&C AGM and there will be a few positions available – the social and fundraising committees particularly need a hand. The meeting is at 7pm on November 27 in the staffroom.

Remember too to look at the Music section later in the newsletter for their end of year concerts coming up. All are most welcome to attend.

This year’s fantastic fundraising efforts paved the way to a $38,000 contribution towards the new in-class CleverTouch Panels. What would you like next year’s fundraising from such events to do? Let us know on [email protected].

Lastly, a huge THANKYOU to the helpers at the recent working bee. Sally W and Bridget B had the idea to come to a P&C meeting, calling for the school toilet blocks to be revamped – and their vision and hard work has paid off. A very hard working team scrubbed, sanded, undercoated and finally painted the canteen toilet block and the 3-6 toilet block. The students were amazed and very happy with the end result.
