The job of an i.o. or i.o.p. is to tell to whom or for whom an action is performed.

My mom bought Joe a new computer.

Mrs. Smith gave the students the assignment.

We gave the money to you.

The steps to locating the i.o. / i.o.p. are very similar to those for d.o. / d.o.p.

1st Find the verb.

2nd Ask who/what (to i.d. a d.o. or d.o.p.)

3rd Ask to whom / for whom (to i.d. an i.o. or

i.o.p.)

1 a) Most basic scenario: Goes directly before the verb

María me compró un coche.

1b) BUT when a d.o.p. is also present, the i.o.p. will PRECEED the d.o.p.

María me lo compró. (She bought me it.)

1c) In very specific instances, the i.o.p. can get attached to an infinitive, present participle, or affirmative command.

Beware when d.o.p. (lo, la, los, las only) follows either le or les. . .

“You can’t say le – lo so say se – lo . (or any combo)

When a noun is used as an indirect object, the i.o.p. is usually used as well.

You will hear Sra. refer to this as “overkill.”

Common Verbs

Only a certain number of verbs will accept i.o. / i.o.p. Therefore, you tend to see the same verbs used repeatedly.
