Zone Instructors Report - Greg Hair

State Show jumping & Dressage State Championships

Congratulations all the riders who competed in Albury at the Zone at the State Show Jump and Dressage Championships held on the 25th & 26th Feb 2012. It was a long way to travel but the experience and comradeship gained from these events bring the clubs within our zone closer together. The horsemanship and sportsmanship shown by all our riders was a credit to the themselves and the Zone and our success was just a bonus.

• A grade Show jumping – Samantha Harrington on Chloe 3rd,

• B grade show jumping team, 2nd Overall - Melissa Backman on DP Winchester, Chelsea Hair on Jonah, Jennifer Massey on Shadow Brook Diva and Estelle Landy on Sam Storm

• C grade show jumping team – 3rd Overall - Holly Webb, Macguiver, Emma Hair on Suelly, Todd Bromich on Rowan and Madeline Watts on Stormy

• 3 grade Dressage team: 7th Overall - Sarah Hair on Talk’n All that Jazz, Rachael Edey on Misha, and Liesel Nunn on Dunelm Pazzaz

• Grade 1 dressage: Kahli Higgins on Coldstream Wendell 26th

• Unfortunately our grade 2 dressage team did not make it to Albury as two of the team horses went lame just prior to the event – bad luck girls.

Zone Instructors Report - continued.Rule Changes:Another activity that has been going on over the last few months is that the rule changes proposed by the East Gippsland Zone have been accepted by the PCAV State Council and included in the 2012 rule books.

The main changes are:

• Show jump heights: A Grade now has a max finishing height of 1.25m, B grade 1.15m, and C grade 1.00m.

• For A, B & C grade show jumping, break away cups are required on the back rails of spread fences from 1st Jan 2013.

• Squad days can be counted as horse qualifying days.

• A recommended speed for the nearest to time events.

2012 East Gippsland Zone squad

As we are about to embark on our second year of squad I feel it is timely to reiterate to all, what the Squad Management Committee aims to achieve by running the Squad.

1. Provide committed senior pony club riders with an opportunity to receive quality instruction

2. Provide something for the junior riders to aspire to

3. Organise parent/instructor clinics that are designed to help improve the knowledge base within the EGZ

4. Expand the social interaction between clubs – it is our belief that geographically we all belong to a club, but the “team” is the Zone.

Squad is a zone activity at which all members including club instructors are welcome to come and enjoy the social side of squad days, with the personal goal of being able to look, listen and learn.

We have been very fortunate in being able to get the same instructors back for this year, which will provide riders with continuity in their development. Keryn Conners will coach dressage, Gavan Chester show jumping, and Yvonne Morrison will do eventing. The format this year will be four weekends with about 4 weeks between the squads, running from May through to August. Application forms now available through our club or on the East Gippsland Zone website for both riders, and parents/adults wishing to attend the various clinics on offer.

Zoe Bolton - A Gippslander riding for Australia

In December 2011 I applied to a nomination on the Equestrian Australia website for a position on the Young Rider Team to compete in Singapore, my application was sent to Peter Cooke one of the Australian selectors, 19 other young riders also applied, I was lucky enough to be selected together with Jonathan Smith from Victoria and Pascale Young from Western Australia, our Chef d’Equipe for the competition was Rory Hovell also from Western Australia. We all met at the Singapore airport and were escorted to our Hotel by our official driver the organising committee had arranged for us to stay at the Raffles Town Club which was a very comfortable 5 star hotel, on the Friday morning we all went to the National Equestrian Centre which was only 5 minutes’ drive from the motel a draw was held for the horses and at our arranged time we had 30 minutes to test ride our horses with our Chef, Rory Hovell each horse was only allowed a total of 8 jumps with cross rails being unlimited. The Saturday was the teams competition we were given a 20 minute warm up time with only 8 jumps allowed for each horse and rider combination, my horse and I jumped clean in the first round but I had 2 rails in the second round, our team finished = 3rd but place 4th on a count back, after our lunch there was another draw for horses for the individual competition to be held the next day, I was fortunate to draw LH Titan a horse bred by Wes and Trish Joyce from South Gippsland, it was amazing to travel to Singapore and ride a horse that was bred very close to home. LH Titan had been purchased as a horse for the Youth Olympics and was a medal winner at the YOG. The individual competition was held over a course of 1.10m and a 2 round competition I was clean in the first round. The second round was against the clock over a shortened course, Rory suggested we take the one main option of a tight turn and to take out a stride to the last fence I was the last to go so I had the chance to watch the other riders, fortunately everything came up for me and I placed first, receiving the gold medal, Jonathan Smith finished 3rd for the Bronze medal, the presentation was very exciting receiving a very large gold horse trophy (which caused a few problems at the airport), a gold medal, flowers, and hearing the national anthem playing with 2 Australian flags on the podium. This event was an amazing opportunity and we were very well looked after by the people of Singapore. I think that my many trips to Pony Club State Championships and in more recent time participating in EV Victorian Teams helped a lot with being part of the team and taking instruction from our coach Rory, I would recommend to any rider that if you want to be part of a State or National Team, put in the miles take the good with the bad and if you really want to do it you can.

If your children are just learning to ride and you have some much loved four legged friends that are not likely to win the Garryowen you may like to help your kids compete in the Fun Ring.

Most PCAV gymkhanas have a fun ring which is usually restricted to non-competitive riders (this means beginner riders or those who are inexperienced at showing).

Events often include:

• Pony with the tail closest to the ground

• Pony with the longest or shortest tail

• Pony with the longest mane

• Hairiest pony

• Smallest pony

• Best groomed pony

• Trotting race

• Bareback Rider

• Fancy Dress

So come along and have some fun with your kids. The fun ring is easy to find. All the kids have smiles, the ponies have loads of ribbons and the parents and grandparents are all enjoying themselves.

Draw your horse competition

We would love you to send us a hand drawn picture of your horse. You can draw your horse doing your favourite activity or in the paddock. There will be a prize for each age group: up to 7 years of age; 7 to 10 years of age, 10 to 15 years of age and over 15 years of age.

Send you drawing to the Zone Secretary and remember to include your name, Pony Club and age.

Longford Pony Club invites clubs to use their grounds

Roping off areas for Buchan Horse Trials & Gymkhana

Areas can be roped off from Good Friday onwards. Areas roped off prior to this day will be removed as other community groups need to use the grounds.

New Rule on Zone Jackets

At the recent State Championships the EG Zone supplied a Zone polo shirt to all Zone competitors. Competitors were able to purchase a State Championship jacket at their own cost. Representatives at the recent EGZ meeting approved that competitors may wear the jackets at State events.

First Aid at Gymkhanas

Clubs must have First Aid available at events they run, whether Interschools or their own club events.

Hire of Zone Dressage Arena

The Dressage Arena is stored at the Bairnsdale Pony Club grounds. The arena is for hire with a charge of $50 to apply, and the hirer is responsible for paying for breakages to be replaced at a cost of $33 for rails and $35.20 for cones. Contact Peter Favalaro for bookings on 5157 5286

2012 EGZ DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Building on the success of 2011 the East Gippsland Development Squad will continue in 2012 at the Bushy Park Pony Club, Denison.

Senior riders graded 1 2 or 3 in Horse Trials or Dressage or A B or C in show jumping are encouraged to apply for a place in the squad. The zone is delighted that last years instructors have signed on again with Gavan Chester coaching the show jumpers, Yvonne Morrison the eventers and Keryn Conners the dressage riders.

The squad will run over four weekends, a month apart:

25th & 26th May 30th June & 1st July 28th & 29th July 25th & 26th Aug

In addition the zone will run a range of courses such as gear checking, dressage judging, show jump building and organising games, on the Saturday of the Squad weekends for parents, supporters & instructors. Schedule is listed below.

The proposed format for the squad weekends will be as follows:

o Full day Saturday - riders will participate in 2 ridden lessons, (approx. 1 1/4 hrs. each)

o

o Guest speaker or activity on the Saturday night – riders are encouraged to camp overnight, and a meal will be available.

o

o Half day Sunday – all riders will have theory session first thing, followed by a ridden lesson.

If you have heard the rumours about the amazing catering by the Bushy Park PC they are true. The buffet roast dinner was great value with beef, lamb, pork, chicken, venison and vegetables and desserts that could take out first prize at a CWA competition - all you can eat for $15 last year! Even at $20 it would still be great value!

If you are a senior rider or a parent interested in learning how pony club competitions run please make the most of this opportunity and register your interest.
