    2/116

    Step 1

Create a new document and a new layer. Rename the layer to "texture" and fill it with white.

Make sure that the foreground is white and the background is black. Then go toFilter>Texture>Texturizer, and use Canvas for the Texture, 80% Scaling, and 2 for the Relief.

    Step 2

Place an image in your document. The one used in this tutorial can be downloaded at this link.

Then delete the background. You can use the Path Tool (P) or the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L). Tip:It doesn't need to be perfect because we will apply some filters in the next step.

    Step 3

Select the layer of the woman and go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. We want to increase the

whites here. Then go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation, and change the Saturation to -65.

    Step 4

Now go to Filter>Artistic>Watercolor. Use the following settings: Brush Detail 9, Shadow

    Intensity 0, and Texture 1.

    Step 5

With the womans layer selected, go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. Then select the BrushTool (B), with black for the color, and mask the body of the woman.

    Step 6

We need the Bittbox Watercolor Brushes 2 that you can download at this link.

Next we create a new layer. Then with the Brush Tool (B) selected, choose the seventh brush

from the BB Watercolor Brushes. Use black for the color. Then reduce its size to fit thedocument. After that, rotate and resize the layer. The idea is to create watercolor-style hair forthe girl using the brush.

    Step 8

Create a new layer. Then select another brush with the Brush Tool(B). I used the 17th Bittbox

Brush. The concept we're using is to design different creative-looking hairstyles. So let'scontinue with that. On a new layer, paint some brush strokes in the middle of the screen. Then

resize and rotate them until they look good. You should achieve a stylized hair look, as in theimage below.

    Step 9

Go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. Set the Fill Options to 0. Then add a Color Overlay.

Use Overlay for the blend mode, Blue (#002cec) for the color, and set it to 50% Opacity. Then

select Satin. Then use the following settings: a slightly darker blue (#065795) color, a LinearBurn for the blend mode, a 100% Opacity, a 19 Angle, an 11px Distance, and a 14px Size.

    Step 10

Let's brush in some more hair. This time we'll use green. Create a new layer, and select the Brush

Tool(B). Then select another brush from the watercolor set. Select the last one, reduce its size, and paint more hair. Use just one click when brushing. After that you can resize and rotate it.

Now go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. Again set the Fill Options to 0. Then add aColor Overlay, use Multiply for the blend mode, Green (#18ff00) for the color, and 100% for the

Opacity. Then select Satin. Use the following settings: darker green (#0b9600), Darken for theblend mode, 100% Opacity, 19 Angle, 4px Distance, and 7px Size.

    Step 11

Next we repeat the process one more time. Create a new layer. Then select the Brush Tool(B).

Select another brush, reduce its size, and paint more hair. Adjust it by resizing and rotating ituntil it looks good.

Again, go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. Change the Fill Options to 0. Then add aColor Overlay, use Hard Light for the blend mode, yellow (#ffe400) for the color, and 100% for

the Opacity. Then select Satin. Use the following settings: darker yellow (#a2a406), Color Burnfor the blend mode, 100% Opacity, 19 Angle, 17px Distance, and 73px Size.

    Step 12

Now select the layer with the girl's face. Change the blend mode to Screen. Then make some

adjustments, like fixing the neck using a regular brush with a white color.

    Step 13

Type the text you want; I typed PSDTUTS. Then go to Layer>Layer Style>Gradient Overlay.

Create a gradient using Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Use 180 for the angle and Normal for theblend mode.

Create another layer, and make sure that the text is on top of this new layer. Then with theRectangular Marquee Tool, create a rectangle selection and fill it with white. Next we merge

these two layers (the text with the white rectangle). This is necessary to add some text effects;otherwise the filters wouldn't work well.

    23/116

    Step 14

Now we apply some filters to the text. First go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Sprayed Strokes. Use

Stroke Length 17, Spray Radius 0, and Stroke Direction Vertical. After that go toFilter>Artistic>Watercolor. Use the following settings: Brush Detail 11, Shadow Intensity 0, and

texture 1. That will create a nice text effect, or you could experiment with different filters untilyou achieve optimal results.

    Conclusion

This tutorial presents a quick and easy way to create a nice design. We achieved this by mixing a

photo with watercolor effects. We used some watercolor brushes and played with blend modes.Keep in mind though, if you can paint it for real, you will be able to create very original artwork,

like the designers I mentioned before.

2 Create Weaved Effect from a Photo

Add this interesting photo effect to make your photos look modern.

Start working by creating a new file (File>New) with 1280x1024 px and 72 dpi.

Using the Rectangle Tool (U), try to make the background of the picture we want to get.

Apply the next shown parameters on this layer (clicking on the layer on the layers palette).

    3 "High-Contrast Sketch"

Combining the Find Edges filter and the Overlay blending mode can produce a high-contrastsketch effect that works with many types of images. This recipe includes multiple Overlaylayers, which boost contrast, so the recipe works particularly well with low-contrast images. In

the recipe, I use three Overlay layersyou can use more or fewer, though more than three canproduce excessive contrast. Another variation, if the result is too harsh, is to add some Gaussian

    Blur.

    STEP 1

In the Layers palette, duplicate the original image layer by dragging the background layer ontothe "Create a new layer" icon, or use Ctrl/Cmd-J.

STEP 2Using the pull-down blending mode menu in the Layers palette, change the duplicate layer's

blending mode to Overlay (or alternatively use the shortcut Alt/Opt-Shift-O) and rename it"Overlay 1."

    STEP 3Reduce the Overlay 1 layer's opacity to 60%.

STEP 4Apply Filter > Stylize > Find Edges to the Overlay 1 layer.

STEP 5Use Ctrl/Cmd-J to duplicate the Overlay 1 layer. Name the new layer "Overlay 2."

STEP 6Use Ctrl/Cmd-F to apply Filter > Stylize > Find Edges to the Overlay 2 layer.

STEP 7Repeat steps 5 and 6. An easy way to do this is to use Ctrl/Cmd-J followed by Ctrl/Cmd-F.

Direct ContrastThis recipe always adds contrast to the image, which this early morning shot needed.

    5 Photoshop Water Reflection - Add A

Realistic Water ReflectionIn this Photoshop photo effects tutorial, we're going to learn how to easily add a realistic waterreflection to any photo. It's a very easy effect to create and you can add it to any photo you like,

although it tends to work best with images that don't already contain water in them.

We'll be using a simple filter and a displacement map to create the water ripple effect, and aHue/Saturation adjustment layer to give our water a little color.

Here's the photo that I'll be working with throughout this tutorial:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    53/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The original image.

And here's what our image is going to look like after adding the water reflection :

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    54/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The final result.

    Let's get started.

Want an easier way to learn Photoshop? Download our tutorials as ready to print PDF

    eBooks!

Step 1: Duplicate The Background Layer

With our image newly opened inside Photoshop, we can see in the Layers palette that wecurrently have one layer, the Background layer, which contains our image:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    55/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The original image on the Background layer in the Layers palette.

We need to duplicate the Background layer, and we can do that using the keyboard shortcut

Ctrl+J (Win) / Command+J (Mac). Now when I look in my Layers palette now, I can see that Inow have two layers - my original Background layer on the bottom and a new layer, "Layer 1",

above it which is my duplicate:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Press "Ctrl+J" (Win) / "Command+J" (Mac) to duplicate the Background

    layer.

Step 2: Add More Canvas Space ToThe Bottom OfThe Document

We're going to add our water reflection below the image, so let's add some canvas space to the

bottom of our document to make room for our reflection. To do that, go up to the Image menu at

the top of the screen and choose Canvas Size. This will bring up Photoshop's "Canvas Size"dialog box. The easiest thing to do here is to add twice as much canvas space as what we

currently have, but we only want it to appear at the bottom of the document, not above it or oneither side, so we need to tell Photoshop exactly where we want this extra canvas space to go.

First, enter100 for the Height and set the measurement to percent, as circled in red below.

Leave the Width option set to 0. Then make sure the Relative option is checked, which tells

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    56/116

Photoshop to give us 100% more canvas space than what we already have. Below the "Relative"option is a 3x3 grid of squares. This is where we tell Photoshop where we want to place our

additional canvas space. Click inside the square in the middle of the top row (again as circledbelow). This tells Photoshop not to place any of the extra canvas space above the document and

instead to place all of it at the bottom:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Add more canvas space using the "Canvas Size" dialog box.

Click OK to exit out of the dialog box, and Photoshop will add the extra canvas space to thebottom of the image:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    57/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The height of the document has now been doubled with the extra canvas

    space added to the bottom.

Step 3: Flip The Top Layer Vertically

In order to create our reflection, we need to flip our image upside down, so let's do that.

With the top layer selected in the Layers palette, go up to the Edit menu at the top of the screen,

choose Transform, and then choose Flip Vertical.

Photoshop will flip the image upside down in the document:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    58/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to flip the image on the top layer

    upside down.

Step 4: DragThe Flipped Image ToThe Bottom OfThe Document

We need the flipped image to be at the bottom of the document, so grab yourMove Tool from

the Tools palette, or press V on your keyboard for the shortcut:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Select the Move Tool.

Then, with the Move Tool selected, click inside the document and drag the flipped image downto the bottom until the top of it is lined up with the bottom of the original image above it. Holddown Shift as you drag to make sure you drag down in a straight line:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    59/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Drag the flipped image down below the original.

Step 5: Add A New BlankLayer

Now that we have our flipped image in place, we can begin to create our water ripple effect.First, we need to add a new blank layer at the top of the Layers palette, so with "Layer 1" still

selected, click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    60/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Add a new blank layer to the document.

Step 6: FillThe New Layer With White

We're going to fill our new blank layer with white. If white is not currently your Background

color, press D on your keyboard, which will reset Photoshop's Foreground and Backgroundcolors, making black your Foreground color and white your Background color. Then use the

keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Backspace (Win) / Command+Delete (Mac) to fill the new layer withthe Background color (white). Your document will be filled with solid white.

Photoshop Water Reflection: The entire image is now filled with white.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    61/116

Step 7: ApplyThe "Halftone Pattern" FilterToCreate BlackAnd White Horizontal Lines

Go up to the Filter menu at the top of the screen, choose Sketch, and then choose Halftone

Pattern. This brings up Photoshop's FilterGallery (in Photoshop CS and higher) set to the"Halftone Pattern" filter options on the right, with a large preview of the effect on the left. We're

going to use this filter to add a series of black and white horizontal lines to the image. Theselines are going to become our water ripples . The more lines we have, the more ripples we'll

have. First, we want to make sure we're creating lines and not dots or circles, so set the PatternType option to Lines. We control the number of lines by adjusting the Size option. Lower values

give us more lines, since we're lowering the size of each line, and higher values give us fewer butthicker lines. I'm going to set my Size value to 7, which I think works best for my image. You

may want to experiment with this value on your own. The Contrast option below it determineshow sharp the edges of the lines are. Lower values give you softer lines, white higher values give

you hard edge lines. Set this value all the way to 50 to give your lines sharp edges. We're goingto soften them ourselves with the Gaussian Blur filter in a moment:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Adjust the Halftone Pattern filter options to create a series of black andwhite lines through the image.

Click OK when you're done to exit out of the dialog box, and Photoshop will fill the image fromtop to bottom with your black and white lines:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    62/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The image is now filled with black and white horizontal lines.

Step 8: ApplyThe "Gaussian Blur" FilterToThe Lines

Before we can use our black and white lines as water ripples , we need to smooth them out and

create nice, smooth transitions between them. To do that, go up to the Filter menu once again, choose Blur, and then choose Gaussian Blur, which brings up the "Gaussian Blur" dialog box.

Keep an eye on your image and drag the slider at the bottom of the dialog box to increase the

Radius value until the lines have a very soft edge to them. I'm using a small image for this

tutorial, so for me, a Radius value of about 4 pixels works well. If you're using a larger, highresolution image, you'll need to set yours to a higher value:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    63/116

Adobe Photoshop Tutorials: Use the Gaussian Blur filter to smooth out the edges of the lines.

Click OK to exit out of the dialog box and apply the blur to the lines.

Step 9: Duplicate The Lines Layer As A New Document

We're going to create a brand new document out of our lines layer, which we'll then use as our

displacement map for our water ripples . With the lines layer selected, go up to the Layer menu

at the top of the screen and select Duplicate Layer, which brings up the "Duplicate Layer"dialog box. In the "Destination" options, click on the down-pointing arrow to the right of the

Document option and set it to New, which will create a new Photoshop document out of our

    layer:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Set the "Document" option in the "Duplicate Layer" dialog box to "New".

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    64/116

Click OK to exit out of the dialog box, and your layer will open up in a new document on thescreen.

Step 10: Save The New Document AndClose Out Of It

This new document that we've created is going to become our displacement map, but before wecan use it, we need to save it. We're also going to close out of it after we've saved it, since wewon't need it open anymore, and the easiest way to accomplish both of those tasks is to simply

close out of the document. When you try to close out of it, Photoshop will as you if you want tosave the document before closing it. ClickYes:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Choose "Yes" when Photoshop asks if you want to save the document

    before closing it.

Photoshop will bring up the Save As dialog box. You can name your new document anythingyou like. I'm going to name mine "water-ripples". Make sure you save it as a Photoshop .PSD

file, since those are the only files that Photoshop can use as a displacement map. You'll probablywant to save the document to your Desktop, since we'll need to find it again in a moment.

Step 11: Delete The Lines Layer

Now that we've used our black and white lines to create the file we'll be using as our

displacement map, we can get rid of it. To do that, simply click on it and drag it down onto theTrash Bin icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    65/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Click and drag the lines layer ("Layer 2") onto the Trash Bin at the bottom

of the Layers palette to delete it.

Step 12: Merge The Two Layers Onto A New Layer

Before we can add use our displacement map, we need to merge our two image layers onto a

new layer above them. To do that, with "Layer 1" selected, use the keyboard shortcut

Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E (Win) / Shift+Command+Option+E (Mac). Nothing will appear to havehappened in the document, but if we look in the Layers palette, we can see that both layers have

been merged onto a new layer at the top:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Both layers are now merged onto a new layer, "Layer 2".

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    66/116

Step 13: Use The "Displace" FilterToCreate The Water Ripples

We're ready to create our water ripples using the displacement map we just created. With the

new merged layer selected in the Layers palette, go back up to the Filter menu at the top of thescreen, choose Distort and then choose Displace .

This brings up Photoshop's "Displace" filter dialog box. This is where we determine the strengthof our ripple effect, and we do that with the Horizontal Scale option at the top. I'm going to set

mine to a value of 4, which will give me a realistic ripple effect. You may want to experimentwith this value with your own image. Setting it too high though will create too much of a

horizontal distortion and you'll lose the realism.

We don't need any vertical distortion to create our effect, so set the Vertical Scale option to 0.Also, make sure that Stretch To Fit and Repeat Edge Pixels are selected:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Go to Filter > Distort > Displace to bring up the Displace dialog box.

Click OK in the top right corner of the dialog box, and Photoshop will ask you which file you

want to use as your displacement map. Choose the file that you just saved a moment ago, which Isaved to my Desktop as "water-ripples.PSD", and then click Open. Photoshop will then apply the

displacement map to the entire image, creating our water ripples :

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    67/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The image after applying our displacement map with the "Displace" filter.

Step 14: Hide The Ripples OnTop With A Layer Mask

Of course, we have a slight problem at the moment. We've added our water ripple effect to theentire image, and we only wanted it in the bottom half. We can fix that easily though using a

layer mask. First, Ctrl-click(Win) / Command-click(Mac) directly on the thumbnail for "Layer

1" in the Layers palette to place a selection around the flipped image at the bottom of thedocument:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    68/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: "Right-click" (Win) / "Control-click" (Mac) directly on Layer 1's thumbnail in

the Layers palette to place a selection around the flipped image.

You'll see a selection appear around the bottom half of the image in your document. Now, withthe merged layer still selected, click on the Layer Maskicon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Click on the "Layer Mask" icon to add a layer mask to the merged layer at

the top of the Layers palette.

Photoshop will add a layer mask to the merged layer, and because we had a selection around thebottom half of our document when we added the layer mask, only the bottom half of the merged

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    69/116

layer remains visible. The top half becomes hidden from view, removing the unwanted waterripples from that part of the image:

Photoshop Water Reflection: The ripple effect is now hidden from the top half of the image after

    applying the layer mask.

We're almost done. Let's finish things off by adding a hint of color to the water, which we'll do

    next.

Step 15: ApplyThe "Gaussian Blur" FilterToThe Layer Mask

Before we add our finishing touch by colorizing the water , let's soften the edge of the layer mask

a little so there isn't such a harsh dividing line between the image on top and the water below.

We'll use the Gaussian Blur filter for that, and since we want to apply it to the layer mask, we'll

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    70/116

need to first select the mask. We can do that by clicking on the layer mask thumbnail in theLayers palette:

Adobe Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers palette to select the layer

    mask.

You can tell that the layer mask is now selected by the white highlight box around its thumbnail. We're going to apply the Gaussian Blur filter to the mask, so go back up to the Filter menu,

select Blur once again, and then select Gaussian Blur. When the dialog box appears, simplyclick OK to apply the same Radius value we used previously.

Step 16:Colorize The Water With A Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

Let's finish things off now by adding just a hint of blue to our water, and we'll use a

Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for that. We want the adjustment layer to only affect the bottomhalf of the image where the water ripples are, so hold down yourAlt (Win) / Option (Mac) key,

click on the New Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, then selectHue/Saturation from the list of adjustment layers:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    71/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Hold down "Alt" (Win) / "Option" (Mac), click on the "New Adjustment

Layer" icon, then drag your mouse to "Hue/Saturation" to select it.

By holding down "Alt/Option", this tells Photoshop to bring up the New Layer dialog boxbefore adding the adjustment layer. Select the Use Previous Layer To Create Clipping Mask

option by clicking inside the checkbox to the left of it:

Photoshop Water Reflection: Select the "Use Previous Layer To Create Clipping Mask" option in the"New Layer" dialog box.

This option tells Photoshop that we want the adjustment layer to affect only the layer directlybelow it in the Layers palette, and since the layer below it is the layer containing our waterripples , only the water ripples will be colorized, which is what we want. Click OK to exit out of

    the dialog box.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    72/116

This will bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog box. We want to colorize our water, so the firstthing we want to do here is select the Colorize option in the bottom right corner. Then select the

color you want your water to be by dragging the Hue slider at the top. I'm going to drag myslider to the right to a value of about 218, which I think is a good color for my water :

Photoshop Water Reflection: Use the Hue/Saturation dialog box to colorize the water .

Click OK to exit out of the dialog box , and you'll see that your water on the bottom has nowbeen colorized, but the color is much too strong at the moment.

Step 17: LowerThe Opacity OfThe Hue/Saturation Layer

To reduce the intensity of the color we just added to the water , all we need to do is go up to the

Opacity option in the top right corner of the Layers palette and lower the opacity value. I'm

going to lower mine all the way down to about 25%, which adds a much more realistic amountof color to the water :

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    73/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Lower the opacity of the adjustment layer until the water has only a hint of

    color to it.

Once you've lowered the opacity of the adjustment layer to reduce the color intensity of the water, you're done!

Here once again is my original image for comparison:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    74/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: The original image once again.

And here is my final "water reflection" result:

Photoshop Water Reflection: The final effect.

Just for fun, here's another example of the exact same effect applied to a different image. The

only thing I changed here was that I only added half as much canvas space below the originalimage (I set the "Height" value in the Canvas Size dialog box to 50% instead of 100%).Everything else was done exactly the same way:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    75/116

Photoshop Water Reflection: Another example of an image using the same effect.

    And there we have it!

    6 Create an Illustrated Look

    Before/After

You can see a Before/After below (just roll over the image once it's all loaded in). I bought myimage from iStockPhoto - here's the item (Note if you download the sample PSD file fromPSDTUTS Plus, the image has a watermark over it, so you'll need to purchase it and swap it in ).

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    76/116

    Step One:

Create a new Solid Color Adjustment layer and fill it with White. Above that layer, create a new

blank layer by hitting the New Layer Button at the bottom of the layer palette. Name that layer"Basic Shapes." Now turn both of those layers off.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    77/116

    StepTwo:

We are going to use the Pen Tool (P) to trace all of the basic structural elements of the image. In

my case, it will be the outline of the body and the outlines of the clothes.

With the Pen Tool selected, simply click anywhere you would like to start then continue to clickand drag to trace the part you are working on with the path. To make it look more like a sketch,we are going to use a lot of small paths rather than trace the whole thing with one long path.

When you come to a place where you think the path should end, hold down the Cmd (or Ctrl)key ,and click anywhere off the path. That will deselect it and now you are free to create another

one. Keep doing this until all of your basic shapes are traced. Here are a few shots of how Itraced my image:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    78/116

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    79/116

A common misconception is that a path needs to be a loop. Not true. We are going to use all"open paths" in this tutorial.

    StepThree:

Turn on your white layer and your blank layer. Select the blank layer. In the paths palette, drag

your work path down to the New Path button at the bottom of the palette to save it. Select theBrush Tool and open the brushes palette. Select any round, hard brush preset. Under the Brush

Tip Shape section, modify the brush to create a thin ellipse by bringing the roundness down to

12%. Make the angle 45 degrees. Turn on the Shape Dynamics section bring the Size Jitter to100, the Minimum diameter to 35, and the Angle Jitter to 5.

With the blank layer still selected, hit D to make black your foreground color then right/control -

click on the path and choose Stroke Path. Make sure that Simulate Pressure is checked and useBrush as your source. Hit OK. You might have to adjust the Master Diameter in the brushes

palette if the lines are too thin or thick.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    80/116

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    81/116

Repeat steps 2 and 3 a few more times, each time getting more and more detailed in what youtrace. The more detail you trace, the thinner you should set the Master Diameter on the brushes

palette. Each time you do a pass, make sure to apply the stroke onto a new layer.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    82/116

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    83/116

    Step Four:

Now that we have the outlines, let's paint in some color. Duplicate the the layer that contains

your photograph. Put the copy at the top, above all the other layers. Set the Blending Mode to"Color".

Hit B for the Brush Tool. In the Brushes palette set the Brush Angle to -45 degrees and turn off

the Shape Dynamics. Make the brush a bit larger.

Make a new blank layer and call it "Paint." Make sure that it's below all of your outline layers.Make sure that your foreground color is still set to black. In the properties bar, set the Opacity of

the brush to 10%. Very roughly paint in the color where you want it. Be sure to release themouse every now and then so that the color begins to multiply over itself. Don't worry about

staying in the lines too much. I used a Wacom Tablet so it was easy for me to get nice strokes butif all you have is a mouse just do the best you can.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    84/116

    Step Five:

Hit E for the Eraser Tool. Set the eraser brush up the same way that we did the paint brush. Make

sure that the eraser brush's Opacity is at 50%. Now go back and tidy up your paint job. I like itwhen you can still slightly see the paint going over the lines.

    Step Six:

On my image, I want the pants to be blue instead of that peachy color, so I am going to make a

new Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer at the very top of the layers palette. Drag the Hue sliderover until you get the hue that you like. Adjust the saturation as you like. Wait, the whole image

changed! Thats Ok we are going to fix that.

Click on the layer mask thumbnail on the Hue/Sat layer and hit Cmd+I to invert it. The image

will go back to the way it was before. Set your background color to white and select the EraserTool. Set the eraser's opacity to 100% and paint on the mask so that the hue adjustment we made

appears. Now just paint where you want the color shift.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    85/116

Continue this way until you are happy with the colors.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    86/116

    The shirt adjusted.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    87/116

    The skin tone adjusted.

    Step Seven:

Make one more new blank layer just below the "Paint" layer. Call it "bkg paint". Select the brush

tool again and make the master diameter huge. Mine is at 200. With the brush opacity at 5% do a

few really broad strokes across the whole image just to bring in a little color to the background.

    Hot & Fiery Photo Effect

Basically, in this tutorial Im going to be showing you how to create a photo effect like the one inthe below image, its pretty much all accomplished by using Filters, as are most photo effects,

right? Photo manipulation on the other hand uses many tools of the trade, most commonlyairbrushing, as everyone calls it. But were just going to be making a nice, hot, fiery kind of

    photo effect in this tutorial!

    1. Selectinga StockPhoto, etc.

Firstly, start by finding a stock photo that you can add the effect to. A few good resources to find

    free stock photos are:

    1. stock.xchange2. Yotophoto3. DeviantART

Or, you can of course, go to to Google Images and look up your favorite female actress. In this

case Ive used a stock photo of Evangeline Lilly from the TV series, LOST!

    2. Ripple Filter Effect

Now open up your stock photo in Photoshop, you can either keep it at its current size of resize itdown a little bit, I resized it a little bit for the sake of this tutorial. After youve opened the photo,

you might want to brighten it up a little or sharpen it, I didnt though. I started by duplicating the

original layer then applying Filter > Distort > Ripple to the duplicate layer. After this, lower theopacity for your duplicate layer to 40-50% and change the layer mode to eitherDarken orMultiply, I used Multiply.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    90/116

This just gave it a little effect, if you want to make it seem more like smoke or something, maybetry Filter > Distort > Wave.

    3. Colorizing

Now its time to add some fire color. Start by creating a new layer.

Now in your new layer, using the Radial Gradient Tool, drag a red gradient over the whole

document. The two reds I used were #f82714 and #8c0900.

Now, change the layer mode for this gradient layer to Color and lower the opacity to about 30-

    50%.

Now another gradient create another layer and fill it with a bright orange radial gradient.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    91/116

The colors I used for this gradient were #febb0fand #fe5400.

After making your gradient, change the layer mode to something like Overlay and lower theopacity if it needs it, in this case I didnt lower the opacity.

    4. Additional Effects

To finish this off, duplicate the original layer, or merge all your layers together, then apply somedifferent filters, change the layer modes, etc. You need to be creative here. I duplicated the

original layer, moved it above all the others then applied Filter > Brush Strokes > Crosshatchand messed around with the layer mode/opacity.

Also try Filter > Render > Lighting Effects as well as Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

You can see my result image below:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    92/116

Mess around with all the different filter effects and layer modes, you might also want to try somegrunge brushing.

    5. In finishing

Well, sorry, but thats it! You may want to download the PSD file from this tutorial to see what I

finished it off with, if so, you can download it from here.

8 Original Art Painting On a Digital Canvas

    Photoshop Tutorial

This tutorial was originally posted on loreleiweb.com but due to technical reasons moved topswish.com. The tutorial remains a copyright property of Lorelei (me!)

This tutorials purpose is to make an imitation of real painting, made using semi dry brushes.

The final result will be this:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    93/116

so, lets get started Make a new canvas, 450*450.

White your colours are set to black and white, go to Filter >> Render >> Clouds and apply the

    clouds effect (once)

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    94/116

Using the marquee tool, select half of the canvas (or a bit more than half, as this will be outsky) and add a lot of Contrast (Image >> Adjustments >> Brightness / Contrast) as shown on

    the picture below.

While the upper part of the canvas is still selected, go to Image >> Adjustments >> Hue /Saturation and set the following settings to colorize the sky and make it bluish. Dont forget to

check the colorize box when applying the settings.

After finishing the color process, press Shft + Ctrl + I to inverse the selection.

Now that the lower half of the canvas is selected, go to Filter >> Blur >> Motion Blur and apply

    the following horizontal blur

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    95/116

Create a new layer. While half the canvas is still selected, fill it with white (means you will onlyhave white inside the selection).

Go to Filters >> Noise >> Add noise, and apply these noisy settings:

Go to Filter >> Blur >> Motion blur and again apply the horizontal blur, only this time upon the

noise effect. We are trying to paint the calm water, we need lots of tiny waves and this would bethe easiest way to make them)

Set the opacity of the blurred noise layer to about 50%.

This is what you got so far

    Flatten the image.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    96/116

Select (manually), using the marquee tool, the lower part of teh canvas (water)

Go to Filter >> Artistic >> Cutout and apply these settings for the cutout effect.

Remember, we are making a painting, it should look as it it was made using a brush!

Now (while your water is still selected) go again to Image >> Adjustments >> Hue /Saturation, check the colorize box and make the water a bit greenish

Create a new layer. Using the round brush (with sharp edge), go over the horizon line thatseparates water from the sky, as shown below:

Select the eraser tool and remove everything that was below the water line, see pic below:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    97/116

Make a new layer again, select a sharp round brush of a huge size (about 200px) and make astamp on a place where you intend to make your full moon.

Go to Layer>> Layer Styles >> OuterGlow and apply glow using teh white colour

In your layers panel, select the background canvas (where we have the sky and water) and applythis lightening effect from the center of the moon, but not on the moons layer!

Choose a picture of a girl, or your own which you want to use. For this purpose we used a photo

taken from Liams Stock free resource.

Crop the picture from the background, so that only the main figure will remain.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    98/116

Press CRTL + A to select the figure, CRTL + C to copy it and then, when u move back to our

painting canvas, press CTRL + V to paste it onto our painting.

While the layer with the girl is selected, go to Filter >> Artistic >> Cutout and apply these

settings, that will imitate brush painting.

So far you got a blurred version of it

Flatten the image yet again (dont skip this part).

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    99/116

Now that the entire canvas has turned to one layer, go to Filter >> Texturize >> and apply thislight canvas texture.

Now for the final touch Select the Burn tool and go with a small soft-edge brush over the

horizon line, and darken the water on the edge, so that it will look as if it fades into the blackmountains we made before.

Thats it, you are done! If you have any questions, please post below, as well as the examples of

    ur work.. cheers!

    9Realistic Fog & Mist

You would think that with something like the Clouds filter it would be easy to create a fog effect

in a photograph, and indeed it is possible to "fog" an image very quickly just by applying theClouds filter to a new layer and then changing the layersBlending Mode to Screen. However, this rarely, if ever, looks truly authentic. To create a fog effect that looks convincing, we need to

    bear in mind two things:

Point 1 - In a photograph of real fog, the fog has the effect of lightening and desaturating thecolours in the image and this effect increases with distance.

Point 2 - Objects in the foreground that extend into the middle distance area, or into the

background plane of the image, remain unfogged. Notice how the nearest lamp-post in this photoof real fog isn't affected by the fog in the background:

    So here's what to do:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    101/116

Step 1: Open a suitable image in Photoshop. Here's mine:

Step 2: Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (Click the Create new fill or adjustment layer

icon at the bottom of the Layers palette and then select Hue/Saturation..., or select Layer >New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation... from the menu). Change the settings to the

    following:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    102/116

ClickOKto apply the Hue/Saturation layer. Your original image will have totally disappeared,

    but don't panic!

Step 3: Press D on the keyboard to set default colours (black foreground and white background),then press G to select the Gradient tool. Make sure that you have the Foreground to Background

gradient selected, and thatLinear Gradientis also selected. Click on the Layer Mask thumbnailin the Layers palette, then click and drag from the bottom of the image to the top. Your image

should now look something like this:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    103/116

Step 4: With the Hue/Saturation layer'sLayer Maskstill selected, use a fairly large, soft-edgedbrush to paint black onto any foreground areas that extend into the "fogged" area. This clears the

fog away, further helping to give the fog layer the illusion of depth. In the above image, I clearedthe fog from the bush in the foreground.

If you think the effect is too extreme you can always lower the Opacity of the Hue/Saturation

layer, or double-click its thumbnail in theLayers palette to bring up theHue/Saturation dialogand change the settings to reduce the effect.

You could leave it at that (and I've seen photos of real fog that look just like this), but to give the

image that extra bit of pizazz you can add some texture to the fog as follows:

Step 5: Add a new layer between the Background layer and the Hue/Saturation layer. Let's call

this layerMist. Select the Rectangular Marquee tool and set Featherto something around 30pixels:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    104/116

Select an area that covers the middle distance in the image, like this:

Step 6: Select Filter > Render > Clouds to fill the selection with clouds. Press Ctrl+D to

    deselect.

Step 7: Right-click theMistlayer in the Layers palette and select Blending Options. In the'Blend If:' section of theBlending Options dialog box, Alt+click the little black stop at the left

end of the 'This Layer:' gradient:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    105/116

This splits the black stop into two. Click the right black stop and drag it way over to the right end

of the gradient, so it looks something like this:

ClickOK. Your fog should now have some texture in the middle distance:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    106/116

Again, you could leave it like that, but for that final touch...

Step 8: With theMistlayer still active, Select Edit > Transform > Perspective. Drag the cornerhandles until you have a trapezoid shape like this:

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    107/116

Press Return or click on the Commit Transform button.

Step 9: Select Edit > Transform > Scale. Change the Width setting in the toolbar (W:) to

1000%, then press Return or click on the Commit Transform button:

You might find you need to tweak theMistlayer's blending options a little to enhance the detail

of the mist trails, or adjust the Opacity of either theHue/Saturation layer or theMistlayer (orboth). You might also need to use the Eraser tool on theMistlayer to clear any unwanted mist

from the foreground. Anyhow, here's what I ended up with:

    Threshold Method

First you are going to need a picture idea for your stencil. A great place to find photos is

stock.xchng or just Google Image Search it. I'm going to use a picture of Deborah Harry(Blondie) for a retro stencil.

Now duplicate the layer. Just click the layer called "Background"and drag it to this icon at

the bottom of the layer window to duplicate the layer.

Click on this icon at the bottom of your "Layer" window and select Solid Colour...

Select a bright colour in the ColourPicker dialogue box that is going to stand out against yourimage. Click OK. See image below.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    111/116

Drag your new fill layer inbetween the two other layers. Your LayerPallete should look like theimage below.

Now working on the top layer "Background Copy" we want to remove all the unwanted bits. In

my case I want to isolate Blondie and get rid of the background blue. To do this you should usethepen tool but if you are feeling lazy just use the magic wand and eraser tool.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    112/116

Desaturate the top layer. Shft + Ctrl + U

Adjust the threshold. Image >> Adjustments >> Threshold. Move the slider until you get agood result and click OK. The image below is what I used but this will differ for each picture.

The resulting image maybe a little jagged (pixelated) but don't worry we will fix that.

Next a Gaussian Blur with a radius of around about 1. Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur...

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    113/116

Now it will be blurry so we need to adjust the curves. Image >> Adjustments >> Curves...The line in the "Curves" dialogue box will appear as a diagonal. Click on this diagonal line twiceand drag these two markers until your line forms an "S" shape (as shown below). The lower

marker will increase the black values as you pull it down. The upper marker will decrease thegrey values as you pull it up. The exact shape of YOUR "S" curve will depend on YOUR

picture, so watch your image as you move these markers until you achieve the desired result.

Your image should be looking clean now. In your Layers Palette double clickon the Layer

Thumbnail (as shown below) and change the color to black or white depending on your picture.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    114/116

I found that black worked best for my image.

Finally take your paint brush tool! THIS NEXT STEP IS WHAT MAKES IT AFUNCTIONING STENCIL!!

The white areas are the areas I'm going to cut out, so I need to make sure that no black areas areenclosed by the white.

The image below demonstrates the idea of creating bridges so that there are no islands. You can

see on picture 1 that if I cut out the white region I would lose the wheel. In picture 2 you can seethe bridges which stops the loss of the wheel detail.

  • 8/6/2019 Effects in Photoshop

    115/116

Bridges also make your stencil stronger. If you have large areas to cut out you might want toconsider adding bridges to maintain the strength of the stencil. You may also want to paint out

    areas to simplify your stencil.
