    Echinococcosis/ Hydatid Diseases occurs whenthis tapeworm of parasitic origin infects thehuman intermediate host. Other intermediatehosts include sheep and cattle.

    In its adult phase, the tapeworm lives in theintestines of dog species worldwide which serveas the definitive host.

    Humans and other intermediate hosts becomeinfected when ingesting food or watercontaminated by dog feces. The tapeworm eggsare ingested during play with dogs or byconsumption of fecally contaminated gardenvegetables.

    Most human cases occur in areas where dogsand livestock are raised together.
