Page 2: Effective Child Discipline

The story of Priest Eli and his two sons. Eli was a faithful priest but his two sons grew up doing whatever pleased them.

When people told the priest about the

behavior of his sons, he gave them a gentle

rebuke, but there was no change. What were

the consequences?

Page 3: Effective Child Discipline

God’s prophecy on Eli’s family…“In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken… I will judge his house forever for the

iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and

he did not discipline them.” – 1 Samuel 3:12, 13

As a result, his two sons both died and when Eli heard about it, he also

collapsed and died.

1.) The Permissive Parent2.) The Authoritarian

Parent3.) The Neglectful Parent4.) The Authoritative

Parent Style

Page 5: Effective Child Discipline

HIGH ON “LOVE,”LOW ON “DISCIPLINE.”

So concerned that the child develops a healthy self-concept that they

“OVER LOVE”“OVER PROTECT”

Page 6: Effective Child Discipline

The parents establish no law.The child becomes a law to

himself. He does whatever he pleases. The child develops no self-control and becomes self-indulgent.

“He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” – Proverbs 13:24

Page 7: Effective Child Discipline

What does “rod” mean?

This does not always refer to a literal rod. Rather, this is a

symbol of DISCIPLINE, A method of correction. There is a

variety of “rods,” and different children need different methods

of discipline.

Page 8: Effective Child Discipline

HIGH ON RULES,

HIGH ON DISCIPLINE,

LOW ON LOVE.

Page 9: Effective Child Discipline

>To these parents, rules are more important!>Their love remains invisible and unexpressed.>The child, under this parenting style develops the feeling of fear and experiences insecurity and low self-esteem.St. Paul’s Counsel: “Fathers, do not PROVOKE

your children, lest they become discouraged.” – Colossians 3:21.

Page 10: Effective Child Discipline

LOW ON LOVE, LOW ON LAW

1.) The most ineffective parent.2.) Often the child is unwanted, seen as a

hindrance to gain or pleasure.3.) There are no rules, but when the child

displeases the parents, they are abused.

4.) Children become prime candidates for criminal activity.

Page 11: Effective Child Discipline

Counsel of the Lord to this kind of parent:

“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

Page 12: Effective Child Discipline

HIGH ON LOVE, HIGH ON DISCIPLINE

Page 13: Effective Child Discipline

… Such parent maintain an open loving relationship with the child.… Parent and child are friends.… There is open communication, sensitivity and support.… There are clearly defined rules, and conformity is required.

… Parents are firm but loving.… When discipline is necessary, it is administered in love.

Page 14: Effective Child Discipline

This kind of a parent follows the example of the Lord in discipline.“…My son, do not despise

the chastening of the Lord,

nor be discouraged when

you are rebuked by Him.

For whom the Lord loves

He chastens. And scourges

every son whom He receives.” –

Hebrews 12:5, 6

Page 15: Effective Child Discipline

The MASTER KEY to effective DISCIPLINE is …

Administer Discipline with

LOVEAnd

FIRMNESS

Page 16: Effective Child Discipline

METHODS OF DISCIPLINE:

1.) Communication2.) Social Isolation

3.) Deprivation4.) Logical Consequence

Page 17: Effective Child Discipline

Engage children in effective dialogue.

Example: God to Balaam (Numbers 22:12, 28)

Methods of Discipline:

Page 18: Effective Child Discipline

Example: God and Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33)

Separate the offender from his/her social group.

Temporary confinement provides time for inner contemplation and change of

behavior.

Methods of Discipline

Page 19: Effective Child Discipline

Withholding something which the child desires and the parent controls.

Example: Moses, Numbers 20: 8 - 12

Methods of Discipline:

Page 20: Effective Child Discipline

The parents resists the urge to intervene, and permits the child

to experience the natural consequences of his/her

behavior.Example: David on his experience with

Batsheba,

2 Samuel 12: 9 - 12

Method of Discipline:

Page 21: Effective Child Discipline

PRINCIPLES IN ADMINISTERING CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

1.) Not As the first, but the last resort2.) Only to small children, and never on

teenagers3.) Not just use any instrument4.) It should be done in privacy, preserving the child’s self worth5.) Not in anger, but with acceptance and love

Page 22: Effective Child Discipline

THERE ARE TWO RESPONSES TO DISCIPLINE

ACCEPTANCEOR

REJECTIONPeople either submit to discipline

or rebel against it!

Page 23: Effective Child Discipline

What is the purpose of DISCIPLINE?

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of RIGHTEOUSNESS and PEACE for those who have been trained by it.” –

Hebrews 12:11God’s discipline produces DISCIPLESHIPA DISCIPLE is one who submits to

discipline.Discipline changes one’s life for good –

results in CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Page 24: Effective Child Discipline

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS:Children who reject discipline becomes a

curse to themselves and societyThose who accept parental discipline become a blessing to societyPersons rejecting discipline receive the

character of Satan and will be destroyed with him in Hell!

Those who accept God’s discipline receive the character of Christ and will live

with Him forever.

Page 25: Effective Child Discipline

HELL is the place where God will finally destroy sin and sinners

…But where is Hell? How far is Hell from this place?

2 Peter 3:10 – “…both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”

Malachi 4:1 –”… the day is coming, burning like an oven, … all the proud, …all who do wickedly will burn… that will leave them neither root nor branch.”

Page 26: Effective Child Discipline

Scripture says that the FIRES OF HELL will burn “FOREVER”

What does this mean?FOREVER in the Bible means “AS LONG

AS POSSIBLE.”As long as fuel exists, it will continue to

burn . But when everything is burnt up, the fire will go out!

God CANNOT HAVE PEOPLE ROASTING UNCEASINGLY. This is against the very

nature of God, for God is Love.

Page 27: Effective Child Discipline

But WHY will a loving God burn people in Hell?

The principle is in Matthew 25:34, 41Hell is prepared for the Devil, not for

people.Heaven is prepared by God for the

people.God needs to purge the earth from

Satan and sinIf I hold on to Satan, God has no option

but to destroy me also. But while sinners burn, a loving God

weeps!

Page 28: Effective Child Discipline

Here is the GOOD NEWS…

After the earth is purified, God will recreate the Earth. (Revelation 21:1,2)

God is going to establish His throne on this earth. Planet Earth, particularly, the NEW JERUSALEM, will become the

Capital of the whole UNIVERSE.

Page 29: Effective Child Discipline

New Jerusalem will come down to this earth.

Page 30: Effective Child Discipline

While those who reject God’s discipline suffer from the fires of Hell, all who submit to His Love will

experience the joys of Heaven!

>Notice some of the joys to be enjoyed described in REVELATION 21:

1.) City’s walls – made of jasper, the gates are solid pearls

2.) City Streets are of pure Gold

3.) No more sorrow, suffering, pain and crying

4.) There will be no more death!

Page 31: Effective Child Discipline

But the GREATEST joy of all will be TO LOOK

INTO THE FACE OF OUR LOVING JESUS(Revelation 22:4)

Page 32: Effective Child Discipline

“Face to face with Christ my Savior, Face to face, what will it be?

When with rapture I behold Him, Jesus Christ who died for?”

– Mrs. Frank A. Breck

Page 33: Effective Child Discipline

… As a parent, I will be high in both discipline and love… As a child of God, I will submit to His discipline in my life… I reject the fire of Hell; I choose the joys of Heaven.

Page 34: Effective Child Discipline

You can make your own choice. May you choose HEAVEN and not hell!!
