Caregivers, Take Care of Yourself!

2

It started with this observation :

“The care you give yourself is the care you give your loved one.”

What can you do to take care of yourself? You can:

• Identify, and use, community resources to ease your burden

• Take a break to enjoy a movie, date night or a walk with a partner or friend

• Develop some good communication skills

• Ask for, and accept, help from family and friends who want to support you

• Keep your own medical appointments

• Maintain good nutrition and regular exercise

• Address your emotions, which are normal, and learn to manage them well

• Give yourself credit for the good but demanding work you do

• Figure out how to be a caregiver and manage your career

The Institute for Caregivers offers FREE classes that deal with the issues above. Powerful Tools for Caregivers teaches

communication skills, decision making strategies and handling emotions. Other classes explore changes in aging and

health; the value of good nutrition and regular exercise; what to do when you are no longer a caregiver; staying at home

with assistance; the changing medical system and so much more!

Turn to the last page of this catalog to REGISTER for one, or more, of these FREE classes and take care of yourself!

Where Do I Go For Help? The Office for Aging’s mission is to provide support for senior citizens and their families through a comprehensive system of services. Along with support and assistance for caregivers, the office can provide information and assistance to any person concerned for older persons. Onondaga County residents and those caring for a loved one are encouraged to contact our staff and find out if one of our programs or services can be beneficial to their situation.

Through these programs, and in many other ways, the staff seeks to provide answers to the questions that may be creating seemingly impossible situations in the lives of older persons. If you simply don’t know where to find the answer to a question about programs and services for an older adult, please give the department a call.

Caregiver Discussion Groups Family caregivers, of older or disabled persons, assume responsibilities and experience many changes in their lifestyles. They say they are frustrated in knowing how to solve the multitude of challenges facing them and don’t know where to turn for help. They need support. You need support!

Through the Onondaga County Department of Adult and Long Term Care, Office for Aging, Caregiver Services provides on-going support through Caregiver Discussion Groups. There are four groups to choose from, all meet regularly with an aging specialist facilitator. Family caregivers gather to share their situations, define the problems they face, explore solutions, learn about community resources and make a commitment to change.

Group Participants learn from, and support, each other as they reach out and try different strategies for providing care for their family members as well as themselves. The groups are trusting places where caregivers can express emotions and concerns and find validation and encouragement.
