One of England’s ten largest cities, Hull combines astrong maritime past with a confident, cosmopolitanpresent to offer an exhilarating urban experience. With a deserved reputation for friendliness and anextremely reasonable cost of living, this revitalisedwaterfront location defies most visitors’preconceptions.

Iconic recent developments such as The Deep – theworld’s only submarium, home to hundreds of speciesof marine life – and the 25,000-seater KC Stadium haveput the city on the national map. But these are onlypart of a £1 billion investment programme that hastransformed the city over the last few years.

The latest addition, St Stephen’s – a £200 million, 40-acre shopping and leisure complex in the city centre.

At the University of Hull, we recognise that your timehere is about more than just your lectures andtutorials. The experience of where you live, and whoyou live with, can be just as important as any otherpart of university life, and often the most memorable.

We would recommend that all first-year students comingto the University of Hull live in University-owned, -managed or -directed accommodation.

Types of accommodation available at the University ofHull include

• Lawns Hall and the traditional style Needler Hall, where an evening meal is provided (with the exceptionof Nicholson Hall which is self catered)

• Thwaite Hall, where most meals (except weekdaylunches) are provided

• Student houses and Taylor Court – for those who preferto cater for themselves

• Headleased properties – self-catered privateaccommodation which is leased and managed by theUniversity.

• ‘The Scheme’ – which comprises of a privately owned,self-catered hall of residence in the city centre and aselection of privately owned and managed self-cateredhouses/flats close to the University.

What does the University provide? We provide accommodation for full-time registeredstudents on a contract basis. We do not provide part-time,short-term, family or hotel type accommodation forstudents.

We aim to provide a good standard of accommodationthroughout all of our properties, although quality andamenities can vary from room to room.

Code of Practice for Student AccommodationThe following residences at the University are signed upto the UUK/Guild Code of Practice for the management ofstudent housing: The Lawns Halls, Thwaite, Needler andFerens Halls and Taylor Court. The Code assistsmanagers, and anyone else involved in the managementof student accommodation by setting out the mainelements of good management practice which includehealth and safety, maintenance and repair, andrelationships between managers and student tenants. Please visit www.uukcode.info

Student houses owned and managed by the Universityadhere to standards laid down by an accreditationscheme which is run in partnership with the localcouncil.

What are your needs? Before you choose where you would like to live, it isimportant that you consider the following.

The type of person you are• When do you prefer to go to sleep/wake up?• Do you like mixing with large groups of people?• Can you share space with other people?• Do you have any disabilities/additional needs?• Do you have any specific dietary requirements?

The area that you will be living in• Does your course demands late lectures/commitments

at weekends?• Your financial situation – rents vary according to

property type and room features• How long you plan to stay in Hull – as contract lengths

vary.

After you have taken these things into consideration, browse the chart opposite to see what facilities areavailable and also which you think would be the mostsuitable for you. For example, if you do not like largegroups of people, you would be more suited to a room ina student house rather than a large hall of residence.

Support in your accommodationThe University recognises that life in its residences playsan important part in the educational experience of itsstudents. As such, we have a strong commitment to thepastoral support of our residents. Fifty members ofpastoral staff, in various residential and non-residentialroles, encourage safe, secure, happy and peacefulenvironments. They also provide discreet support forstudents when they need help, whether practical oremotional.

Any students under the age of 18 at the time of theirarrival at the University are strongly advised to take upaccommodation in one of the halls of residence whereresidential pastoral support is available. In addition tothe pastoral staff for the residences, numerous othersources of help are available within the University, detailsof which are provided to students in their pre-arrival andnew student packs.

Policy on the allocation of placesThe University of Hull currently provides accommodation for approximately 2,600single students – 1360 in halls of residence, 900 in self-catering Student Houses, 288in Taylor Court flats, about 245 in Head Leased flats and houses managed by theUniversity, plus a large portfolio of private accommodation with The Scheme.

In the halls, wherever possible, places will be allocated equally between the genders. Some halls have single-gender areas, while others use a semi-random allocation, usually with a concentration of men on the ground floor. Many houses are mixed, butsome single-gender properties are also available on request.

Students that have cultural, religious, medical, dietary, or other requirements need tomake a decision before applying as to whether or not a mixed environment may posedifficulties for them. In self-catering accommodation some students’ diets and storesof foodstuffs are likely to include meat, pork and alcoholic drinks. It is not possible tomake provision for students to have extra refrigerators, cooking utensils, dining areasand kitchens for separate use.

Places are allocated in accordance with the following list of priorities1. Disabled students (who have specific accommodation needs) 2. New undergraduates3. Undergraduate students from overseas4. Postgraduates5. Exchange students6. Continuing UK and EU undergraduates

1. Disabled students and those with declared and medically-certified healthproblems are given first priority as appropriate. We endeavour to integrate studentswith disabilities within our general student community.

Adapted accommodation includesStudent housesSeven fully adapted, en-suite, study bedrooms in houses with adapted kitchens(two having) automated doors, suitable for wheelchair users. In addition, there arethree accessible study bedrooms with shared level access bathroom facilities andadapted kitchens.

Taylor CourtThere are 24 ground floor, en-suite study bedrooms with ramped access. The en-suite bathroom includes a raised shower tray, toilet and basin. Many rooms havesome adaptations and can be fitted with appropriate grabrails and shower seats onrequest. One block of Taylor Court (eight ground floor, eight first floor and eightsecond floor flats) has a deaf alerter installed. There is no lift access in TaylorCourt.

Needler HallNeedler Hall has two study bedrooms with a shared bathroom suitable forwheelchair users.

Thwaite HallThwaite Hall has three accessible study bedrooms with shared, adapted bathroomfacilities. Please note that from the student bedrooms, there are five steps down tothe communal areas.

Lawns HallsNicholson Hall and Lambert Hall each have a three-bedroomed flat with sharedadapted bathroom facilities, suitable for wheelchair users. Please be aware thatalthough the Lawns Centre is wheelchair accessible, other Halls on the site are not.

Students with specific needs (for example arising from physical or mental healthdifficulty) requiring University accommodation are asked to contact theAccommodation Office as soon as they accept an offer (firmly or provisionally).

2. Undergraduate students – a stock of accommodationis reserved for new and continuing unaccompaniedundergraduate students.

Students admitted during the later stages of ouraccommodation admissions procedure, normally after1 September 2010, are advised that available optionsbecome fewer and fewer over time until all propertiesare let. If demand exceeds our capacity, those whomwe cannot permanently accommodate on arrival willbe offered several residence options, normally on afirst come first served basis, including the use of a‘temporary’ (fold-up bed) located in dedicated areas atthe Halls of Residence with an expectation but not aguarantee that the University will accommodate thisgroup of students in vacancies arising within the firsttwo weeks of the session. Students who cannot beaccommodated will be directed to our Head-Leasedaccommodation or to a private landlord registeredwith ‘The Scheme’.

3. Postgraduate students – a stock of accommodationhas been reserved for their use in the Taylor CourtFlats and our close-to-campus student houses.

Postgraduate students wishing to secure a room priorto arrival should apply and pay a £150 deposit usingthe online application facility (please see the How toApply section). Those students unable to pay a depositshould complete and return the application form(downloadable from the Accommodation website) tothe Accommodation Office where it will be held untilyour arrival, at which point you will be allocatedaccommodation on a first come, first served basis. Inthe event that the number of students in this categoryexceeds the places reserved, those arriving after allavailable places have been let will be assisted infinding head leased accommodation or privateaccommodation with ‘The Scheme’.

5. Exchange students – a limited number of rooms in thestudent houses are reserved to meet the expecteddemand from exchange students (both full session andsingle-semester applicants.) In the event of demandexceeding supply, students will be directed toalternative accommodation within the private sector.

6. Continuing students – a limited number of places arereserved for use by this group, however demandusually exceeds the number of places available.

Unfortunately, the University of Hull is unable toprovide accommodation for the followingStudents with children, expectant mothers or studentsaccompanied by their family.

Part-time or non-registered students –The Universityregrets that it is unable to provide accommodation forpart-time and non-registered students. Private-sectorresidence is recommended. Council tax implications alsoneed to be taken into account.

Married couples – accommodation provided by theUniversity is designed to meet the needs of single, unaccompanied students. Private sector accommodationis recommended.

Factors to take into considerationLocal students – students whose homes are withincommuting distance of the University campus are invitedto contact the Accommodation Office for information andadvice if they wish to take up University residence. Please note: local students will be held liable forresidence fees if, after accepting the residence contract, they return back to the ‘family home’, unless theAccommodation Office is able to re-let the room.

Specific Course Commitments• Students in the Department of Drama often work

irregular hours, including evenings.• Students of the Hull-York Medical School may be

required to attend phases of tuition/work observationin the evenings.

• New Nursing students – course requirements havebeen proven to be best suited to the self-cateringenvironment and the longer contracts offered at thestudent houses and the Taylor Court flats. Where a halllocation is desired, contract length should be takeninto account. Nursing students are advised thatclinical placements will not exempt them from liabilityfor residence fees. Any placements made by thedepartment will be supported by public transportfacilities.

• Studying away from Hull – students who are requiredto spend a year away as part of their course (forexample language students studying abroad orstudents on industrial placements) are asked tocontact the Accommodation Office for accommodationadvice in December if they are due to return thefollowing September.

Mature students – the residential environment preferredby mature students can be different from that which isenjoyed by younger undergraduates. General hall life isusually unsuitable, though some may wish to apply forAssistant Warden Posts. Places in student houses andseveral Taylor Court flats have been reserved to provideaccommodation for mature students, dependent ondemand.

All students are expected totake up occupation of theirroom by 9.00 am on Thursday30 September 2010 (unlessalternative arrangementshave been made with theAccommodation Office).Failure to do so may result inthe University keeping someor all of the deposit until theroom has been re-let.
