Founded in 1907, the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is committed to helping homeless and abused companion animals, enlightening people and enriching lives. The Society’s Animal Protection Department enforces Alberta’s Animal Protection Act by responding to concerns within the City of Edmonton about animal neglect. The EHS also actively educates the public and provides tool to help them be responsible pet owners while at the same time, cares for approximately 13,000 homeless animals who come through its shelter doors each year. The Society greatly

Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! My name is Sadie. You may recognize me from my internet fame – I enjoyed a moment in the spotlight when my irresistible bouncy antics were caught on camera by a vigilant staer here at the EHS. The hilarious clip was posted on Instagram and picked up by a Buzzfeed reporter in New York City! Pretty cool stu. But, in spite of my celebrity stint, I am still waiting for my forever home. I am a high energy and active lady who really craves a go-go-go kind of lifestyle; I need the right family to keep me physically and mentally exercised. Registering in classes here at the shelter would be a fantas-tic way to bond with me and help channel my mind and energy in constructive ways. I have a history of playing too rough with cats, so I will need a no-cat home. I love to play with toys and will keep you busy for hours playing tug! Are you up for the challenge?

MY JOB FINDER ALBERTA JOB OPPORTUNITIES 15

March 13 - 19, 2015

Dear Working Wise:I saw an internet ad saying that I could make $1,000 a day on the Internet working from home. That sounds too good to be true. Is it? Signed Wary

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Dear Wary:

I doubt that a company that can aord to pay its employees $1,000 a day to work from home has to do much advertising. The Internet is lled with work-from-home scams masquerading as real jobs.

Top 10 Red ags to watch for: 1. The job title, duties and compensation are vague.2. They show little interest in your qualications/skills.3. The job oer is a spam e-mail or a web-banner advertisement.4. They pressure you to buy training/equipment/software for the “job”. 5. You are required to repackage items sent to you and ship them abroad.6. The company is hard to identify, locate or contact via telephone and e-mail.7. You are required to transfer or wire money out of your personal bank account. 8. Unprofessional: poor grammar, spelling, web design, webmail e-mail address. 9. They want your Social Insurance Number or banking/credit information right away.10. Too good to be true: guaranteed big money, no risk, no experience, no eort needed.

You can also check suspicious job opportunities using the Scam Detector app, which describes more than 800 scams, including 64 employment scams.

The Scam Detector (http://scam-detector.com) provides a weekly top-10 list of the latest scams in partnership with the Better Business Bureau of Central and Northern Alberta.

The email processing scam hit number eight in January 2015. This scam promises that you will get paid $20 for every email that you process. All you have to do is pay a registration fee. Once you’ve registered and paid your fee, you will not receive any work and will not be able to contact the company.

Other scams involve your bank account. The “employer” will quickly hire you and then ask you for your banking information so they can deposit your earnings. Instead, they will use the information to steal your identity or your money.

“Employers” in another common scam, send you a cheque to deposit in your bank account and ask you to write a cheque to someone else for a little less. You get to keep the dierence. The only problem is that the cheque they sent you is fake, yours is real, and you are now out hundreds of dollars.

March is Fraud Prevention Month. For tips and information on Fraud Prevention Month, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.phonebusters.com.

If you really want a job where you can work from home, you might want to try applying to legitimate employers for traditional jobs that you can do from home and then discuss the idea of telecommuting. Technological advances and potential cost savings are making more companies open to the idea of employees working from home.

For home-based business ideas, search the tip sheets on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) web site for “telecommuting”.

For more tips on preventing fraud, check out the Central and Northern Alberta Better Business Bureau’s Scam Stopper web page at www.bbb.org/scam.

Good luck!
