THE GOOD OF HUMANITY

In his Manual of Moral IB*

straction, James Reid says "Every man and woman i s a member of the great body of hum

anity. Each of us ougfat to live

for the good of humani't y.

This is to be 'humane' . Nihil humani a me alienum puto —

' I consider no interest of

humanity foreign to me' — this feeling ought to actuat e

us all. ^e c«ight not to say of any good movement or cause

that it is none of our business. I f we love our fellow- men, we shall try to live for the good of all. Kindness &

generosity, two words foe the

helping of others, are derived from kin and genus. To be kind is to feel that ev

ery one is cur kinsman. To be generous is to feel that every one is of our race or family.

"To improve humanity we

must also look for the'-weak places. I f our own bodies a- re sick, the doctor looks for the diseased part and tries to cure that.

"Humanity h&a -many, 9 ck places; We should look fo r these ard try to cure them.

Philanthropy and benevole

nce are names given to

love for humanity. By philanthropy and benevol ence, generosity and kindness, we cure the diseased parts of

humani ty."
