ABOUT THE PRODUCERSEthno World´s producers are

Marcel Barsotti and Andreas Hofner. Living in Munich, Marcel Barsotti has for many yearsbeen composing film scores. He wrote the music formore than 40 films including "The Miracle of Bern -Das Wunder von Bern" (Soenke Wortmann), „KebabConnection“, "The Poet" (Paul Hills), "Sirga" (Luc Bes-son production), "Dolphins", "Green Desert" and"Always and Always". He was nominated for the Ger-man Television Award in 2004. Among many CDreleases and music for commercials, he released hisfirst CD-ROM library Ethno World in 1999. This productbecame one of the best selling ethnic CD-ROM libra-ries world wide.

Andreas Hofner is renowned as a composer of manyradio jingles and film scores for feature films and docu-mentaries. He now works as a professional producerand is an excellent musician in his own right.

THE SOUND CONCEPTThe library contains more than 5 Gigabytes of ethnicinstruments. Almost all instruments were recorded instereo with different velocities. For sound reasons (nopun intended...), several flutes were sampled in mono.Very often flutes do sound smoother and richer inmono. All instruments have been recorded with thefinest state-of-the-art tube technology and thenmastered with professional high quality plug-ins. Greatcare has been exercised to transmit the authenticity ofthe instruments. This has sometimes meant that origi-nal tunes are sampled with some unavoidable soundsand noises. The reference tuning is set at 440 Hz.

HOW TO USE THE INSTRUMENTSThe Virtual Instrument "Ethno World 3 Complete" isavailable for Mac and PC/Win and includes a specialversion of Native Instrument´s KOMPAKT Sampler. Youcan use the instruments like in a "normal" orchestra,that´s why there are different groups like bell typeinstruments, bowed instruments, construction sets,gongs and bowls, key instruments, metal type instru-ments, stringed instruments, woodwind and brass,world drums and world percussion. The instruments dosound extremely dynamic and natural. You will hear theswish of vibrating strings and in addition there is aneffects bank that lets you combine the specific noisesof an instrument with the basic instrument sound.

In the main program many instruments are equippedwith dimension keys. Via keys they let you select thedifferent playing styles of the instrument. Some of theinstruments (e.g. the Erhu) are programmed with up to11 dimension keys and playing styles. For a certaininstrument, the dimension keys let you change theplaying styles like piano/forte, marcato, pizzicato, tre-molo, glissandi, slides, mordent, trills and many more.Given precise programming, one can no longer diffe-rentiate the Ethno World Volume 2 instruments fromthe "real" instruments.

In addition there is a lot of different loops, licks andeffects in tempi from 60 to 140 bpm. Ethno World 3Complete can be used in many different styles like folk,mainstream, film scores, avantgarde, ethno music andpop/rock music.

Here are some veryunusual instruments fromaround the world. Theyall have varying dyna-mics, playing styles,loops and pitched pro-

grammes. In the pitchedversion some of theinstruments sound likelarge Tibetan bowls,gongs or church bells.

The Saron is a Gamelan

Glockenspiel from Lom-bok (1 octave).

The Kalimbas (Africanplucked instruments,here with 5 and 15 smallmetal rods) have pro-

grammes in the originaltuning and in the Europe-an half tone tuning.

A selection of ethnic bellinstruments is availableas well as Tibetan sin-

ging bells, which areplayed with a rubber-coated stick.

There are temple cym-bals from China andTibet and bells fromBurma.

You will find Europeaninstruments, such as aMetallophone, a chroma-tic 2 octave Glocken-spiel, and small tubularbells.

These too have varyingdynamics. A few moreunusual instruments arethe Shanghai baby piano(its little wooden clappersfall onto longer metalrods), a bamboo vibra-

phone with syntheticallyproduced tremolo and aGamelan crashbell,where four firmly fixedcymbals are hit by twocymbals.

From the instrumentfamily of the Gongsthere are instrumentslike the Wuhan TamTam from China, theJava Gong with a dia-meter of 80 Centimeters(approx. 31 inches) andthe Tam Tam Besarfrom Indonesia.

There is also a largecollection of SingingBowls at your dispo-sal: Big Rako Bowls,Big Tibetan SingingBowls from Tibet andRin Bowls from Japanin different playing sty-les and sizes.

From Indonesia is theGong Besar with adeep curve at theback, and the Dream-catchers, very muchlike windchimes.

In China the Erhu,Gaohu and Jinghu(Chinese opera violin)are traditional bowedinstruments.

The Erhu is a two-string violin tuned infifths. It has no fretsand no fingerboard andis being played with afixed bow stick.

The Gaohu is a higherpitch sounding Erhuand the little Jinghu isa Chinese soprano vio-lin which is used in Bei-jing opera music.

The Morin Khuur isalso called the Mongoli-an horse head violin. Itoriginates from Mongo-lia and is very similar toour cello. This lowsounding violin has twostrings made fromhorse hair, again it hasno frets and no finger-board.

The Fiddle is a bowedinstrument very similarto the Violin. The Fiddleis different from theclassical Violin in theway it is played and inthe musical style play-ed on this instrument.

Stringed instrumentshave been recorded inwhole and half tonesteps and consist of twostereo layers, tapering upto 15 seconds. The bassneck of the contra guitarwas recorded pluckedand also played with aplectrum. The Chinese Erhu violin(2 strings) was playedwith a plectrum and isplayed in two differentways: on the left half ofthe keyboard (E1 to C3)you can hear the firststring with varying dyna-mics, from C1 to D1 thedrone can be played; onthe right half of the key-board (D3 to A4) you canplay the melody line onthe second string. The Small Erhu plec-trum violin and the Cey-lonese guitar (2 stringswith fingerboard) behavesimilarly, but they wouldbe used better for anArabian style. The Kantele (developedfrom the dulcimer) has 15strings, and it has an Ftuning. It is played byplucking or tapping withsticks (this goes for thesmall Kantele too). There is also a banjo anda Truxa mandolin, whichcan be used for EastAsian, European andArabian styles. Finally there is a six-stringed steel guitarwith slide notes.The Zheng Harp (Chine-se curved base Zither)

is similar to the JapaneseKoto. It is a harp with asize of approx. 2 Meters(6 ft.) and its 21 stringsare tuned diatonically.The Zheng´s specificvibrato is produced withthe left hand close to thebridge. The Bouzouki fromGreece is a four voiceguitar which is wellknown for its tremolo.The Zsoura is a smallthree voice Bouzoukiwhich is very well suitedas a solo instrumentbecause of its higherpitch. The Sitar and the Tam-pura are the mostfamous stringed instru-ments from India. Thestandard Sitar has 7main strings and 11 free-ly vibrating drone-stringsfor harmonics. The Tam-pura, used as an accom-panying instrument forRaga singing or togetherwith Sitar, consists of 5strings without a finger-board. It is played with aglissando chord andtuned to key note andfifth (fourth). The Dra-Ngen is a 7string kerb lute with mat-ching half octave stringoriginating from Bhutan. The Oud originallycomes from the Persiangeographical area and isa short neck lute with upto 6 voices. Due to itsfretless fingerboard it canbe played in micro inter-vals.

The Balalaika and theDomra both are fromRussia. The Balalaika istuned in E-E-A and ismostly played with a tre-molo. The accompani-ment, the Domra, origi-nally comes from Mon-golia. It is a small pluk-ked guitar tuned infifths. It is built in severaldifferent versions.The Timple is the tradi-tional 5 string guitar fromLanzarote. It shows simi-larities with the Ukulele. The Ukulele fromHawaii is a small 4string guitar tuned to A-D-F#-B (featured hereas a soprano version). The Banjolin, since1885 also known as theBanjo Mandolin, is a 4voice mandolin tuned toG-D-A-E. It is playedwith a banjo corpus. The 72 string Santoor isa 4 voice zither from Per-sia and it is played withtwo hammers over atonal range of 3 octa-ves. The Cora , a stringedinstrument from WestAfrica, depending on itsversion, features 8 to 16strings that can be tunedover a bridge. Without afingerboard, the stringsare fixed and are pluk-ked with several fingers. The Vester Acoustic-bass with its 4 strings istuned to E-A-D-G. A Resonator Guitarmade by Continentalfrom Germany is a tinguitar which is brought

to resonance with the"cone". Its sound isslightly t inny andaggressive. The instru-ment often is playedwith the slide technique.The Tanbur , a long-neck lute from theMiddle East, is playedwith a pick (plectrum)just like a Mandolin.

The Saz or Baglama isa Turkish long-neck lutewith seven strings andfrets. Despite its shapewhich is similar to theGreek Bouzouki, it is dif-ferent in construction,size and sound. The Sazis the most popularstring instrument in Tur-key. The word "Saz" ori-ginates in the Persianlanguage and simplymeans "musical instru-ment". It is the traditio-nal accompanyinginstrument of the bardswho are called Asik inAnatolia and the Cauca-sian regionand is playedin an open tuning."Slaps" is a further play-ing style available here.

Monochord - Thesound bench on thisrecording is being usedin the areas of relaxationand wellness, birth pre-paration, in kindergar-dens and schools. The50 strings running overtwo well rounded fretsfound their way from theCembalo makers intothis instrument; theyguarantee a very warm,pleasant and deepsound with rich harmo-nics.

All the woodwind instrumentshave tapered notes, somewith and some without vibra-to. The following instrumentsare included: an Indian and aCeylonese snake charmerand a double neck recordermade from a pumpkin, whichalways plays two notes atonce like a bagpipe.

There is, however, a program-me that lets you play on justone recorder neck at a time.With its loop version you canimitate Irish pipes.

There is a big bamboo flutefrom Indonesia for warmsounds and for a strong eth-nic flute character, a Mexicanpiccolo, an Irish aluminiumlow whistle in D, a Susatotin whistle from the USA, aclay ocarina from Peru, aDagoba (temple) flute fromSri Lanka and an alto recor-der in F.

In addition, there is a goodselection of flute phrasesand effects for the musicalregions of East Asia andSouth America.

The Bawu is a smooth andmellow sounding Chinesebamboo flute with 5 holes. Itssound is produced by a cop-per reed.

The Sheng, also known asmouth organ, comes fromChina as well, and its soundis similar to a blow organ. The

sound is produced by 30bamboo tubes with valves.The Sheng covers a tonalrange of approx. 3 octaves.

The Chinese Hulusi is a 6hole double tube flute with abamboo body in the shape ofa pumpkin. Its sound is warmand clear.

The Kena and the MocenoBassflute both are SouthAmerican kerb flutes fromBolivia. Their characteristical-ly powerful and airy sound isa bit similar to the Shakuha-chi.

The Peruvian Ocarinas aremade from clay and are, astheir name implies, from Peru.

The Shiva Flute is played byIndian preachers. This brassflute has a very transparentand high pitch sound.

The Slovakian Fujara - likemany flutes an instrument ofthe cattle drovers - is madefrom elder. After removing thesoft pulp, the two elder tubes(one up to 170 cm/67 incheslong, the other significantlyshorter) are attached to eachother. The long tube is fittedwith a labium and three gri-pholes, the shorter tube getsa mouthpiece which is usedto blow the flute.

The European Tenor Recor-der starts at C minor andbelongs to the instrumentfamily of recorders.

The Hawaiian Shellhorn is ashell-l ike horn flute fromHawaii.

The Rag Dun Horn is oftenplayed at ceremonies. Itcomes from the Himalayasand shows similarities withthe European Alphorn, but itsounds much louder andmore metallic than its Euro-pean counterpart. There areRag Dun Horn versions of upto 3 Meters (approx. 9 ft.)length.

The Dung Dkar ConchTrumpet from the Himalayasis a shell-like trumpet withrich ornamentation.

The Indian Shenai is a doublereed flute and it is very similarto the Schalmei from Moroc-co. It starts at G# and soundsvery loud and harsh.

The Zukra Bagpipe, a Tunisi-an bagpipe, is a double reedflute with a kid-leather body.By powerfully blowing intothe instrument it works like abagpipe.

Overton Whistles are hand-made Irish aluminium whistles.Three whistles are combinedto one instrument to achieve agreater range.

The Tin Whistle developedfrom the Fipple Flute, whichgot its name from its mouth-piece (fipple). It directs a nar-row air stream to a sharp edge.

Uillean Pipes is the name forthe Irish bagpipe. Uillean isthe gaelic word for elbow.The name came from the factthat the Uillean Pipes getsupplied with air not with themouth, but by a bellow whichis compressed with theelbow.

The Cümbüs is a Turkishlong-neck lute with a circularmetal bowl resonator coveredwith a screw-tensioned hidesoundtable. It resembles aBanjo, only with a deeperbowl resonator and a widerunfretted neck; its sound isdeeper. It has six doublecourses (pairs) of metalstrings attached to metalmachine tuning heads. It istuned (and played) with a quillor a plectrum, like the oud.

The Pan Flute - named afterPan, god of the sheperds. Thesound of this instrument origi-nates from an airstream whichis directed to a sharp edgethat cuts this airstream (on itscutting edge). All over theworld Pan Flutes developed indifferent cultures more than6000 years ago. Today thevery airy sounding Pan Flutesfrom South America arefamous, especially the onesfrom the Andes with theirtubes aligned in one row.

All drums have two dynamics oneach key of one programme.There are programes for playingtechniques and pitched pro-grammes and different loop andbeat versions. Many program-mes contain single samples inadditon to playing styles to imi-tate a phrase realistically, i.e. themilitary snare or the Darabuka.

The African Donn Donn is a tindrum with a cow hide skin and isespecially recommended for Afri-can and Indian grooves.

The Madal drum originallycomes from Nepal. It has diffe-rent sized drum skins on eachside and can be tuned with woo-den keys on interlaced skins.

From Bali comes the ceremonialdrum. Iranian bongos are very smalland made from solid wood. Theirsound is loud and high pitchedand they are played with sticks.

For typical ethnic grooves thereis a metal Darabuka from Tur-key, not to be mistaken for Der-bukas, which are from Moroccoand have a clay body (generallyhigher pitched).

The Small Cassa has a very lowand mighty sound, well suited toproduce big drum grooves of allstyles. There is also the bighand drum for all playing styles,a tambourine drum and aheadless tambourine with rollsand crescendi, brass tablasfrom India, low pitched timbalesand grooves, etc.

The Bendir from Tunisia is simi-lar to the Irish Bodhran. Its cha-

racteristic sound is produced bytwo cords inside the drum.

Also from Tunisia are the TunisCeremony Drum and the TunisTamburin.

The Gopichand is a pluckeddrum from Bengal. It is made oftwo longitudinal wooden sticksand a body which changes itspitch whenever an internal stringis being compressed.

The Balafon and the AfricanXylophone both are from Sene-gal, they are the counterpart tothe European Xylophone. TheBalafon exists in versions of dif-ferent size. The resonance of thesound boards is transmitted overpumpkins cut in half.

The Bass Cajon and the Yambuare two large drums from Peruand Cuba which both have awooden head. They were usedto urge slaves to work.

The Djembe is a drum origina-ting from Guinea and Mali. It hasa batter head made from goatskin and it offers a rich soundpalette.

KKaannjjiirraa - a simple South Indianframe drum which is hit only withthe right hand. Nevertheless itprovides an astounding variety ofsounds. By keeping the skin moistone gets a remarkable basssound.

Surdo - the big Samba drumfrom Brazil is played with heavysticks. It provides the basicrhythm for the Samba and isconstructed from a large alumini-um kettle, stringed with two pla-stic skins.

Here are some veryunusual instruments likethe Angklung from Indo-nesia. Varying woods indiatonic tuning areshaken to achieve akind of tremolo sound.This instrument cansound quite East Asian,

but can also be used fora kind of Russian bala-laika.

Furthermore there is thewide selection of play-ing techniques andloops of shaker-like per-cussion instruments like

the African rice shaker(a rice filled rectangularbamboo board), an Afu-che Cabasa with metalchains, South Ameri-can rainmakers in vary-ing sizes, chicken eggsand maracas from Afri-ca and America.

Qi Gong balls fromChina, which are tradi-tionally used for handmeditation, a Gamelanwooden bell, two handcymbals from Europeand many other percus-sion instruments fromaround the world.

The Scale Changer Harmonium was firstintroduced to India by the missionaries. It isbrought to resonance with a beam of air. Thewhole keyboard can be shifted, and therebythe key note is adjustable from G# to E. Anorgan sound can also be added.

The Dallape Accordion from Italy is a 3 octa-ve wide accordion with keys.
