From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents On Friday evening last week, we hosted a Year 6 Dinner for the boys and their parents. This commenced in the Junior School Hall where the formalities occurred. This included a number of speeches, a performance by a group of Year 6 instrumentalists along with presentations to each student. The boys were all acknowledged individually and received specially struck medals, recognising their time in the Junior School. Boys who commenced in Prep and have completed the full seven year journey in the Junior School received a second medallion, recognising this achievement.

Year 6 boys following the formal proceedings at Friday’s Year 6 Dinner

The evening is a special occasion signifying the conclusion of the boys’ primary school years. I thank our Year 6 teachers, Mr Jeffries, Mr Woolacott and Mrs Casey for their fine work with the boys, along with Mrs Maunder for her contributions. I particularly thank the boys for their efforts, for their significant contributions to the school, be they in the classroom, in the performing arts, in sport, with music, with chess or with the many other activities on offer. I wish all the boys every success for the future. Reports End of year reports went home with the boys today. I am pleased that the vast majority of boys have had a very good year both academically, within the co-curricular program and behaviourally. I thank the teachers for preparing these documents for your benefit. Speech Day Awards Speech Day awards were announced in class today and are also mentioned in the boys’ reports. Teachers give considerable time and thought to these awards. I ask that all parents accept the professional and considered judgement of the teaching staff and understand that these decisions are often quite difficult to make. If a student ‘misses out’ on an award it is due to the fact that another boy (or boys) performed better. This does not diminish any single student, but is simply the way life works. It is disappointing when awards are questioned and I encourage all parents and boys to accept the ‘umpire’s decision’ with grace and dignity.

Staffing As mentioned in previous newsletters, Mrs Jan Heffernan, Head of Teaching and Learning, retires at the end of the year. I congratulate Mrs Heffernan on a long and successful career as an educational leader and teacher. I wish Jan every happiness in her retirement and thank her for her contributions to our School. One of our Year 5 teachers, Mr Jamie Lee, and his wife Bec are celebrating the birth of Maverick Harland-James Lee who was born on Friday 16 November. Congratulations to Bec and Jamie on the birth of Maverick who is a younger brother to Hank. Mrs Jen Maunder has worked as a teacher aide in the Junior School this year, providing support in one of our Year 6 classes. Mrs Maunder’s work concludes in the Junior School at the end of the year and I thank her for her energetic, positive contributions and wish her well for the future. Mrs Alison Cantle has taught learning support classes in Years 5 and 6 over the past four years. Mrs Cantle has been on extended medical leave for the past three terms and recently tendered her resignation. I thank Alison for her fine work at our School and wish her every happiness for the future. Over the past few years, Mrs Jo Jones has been on an annual contract teaching Health and PE lessons. During the past three terms, Mrs Jones has covered Year 5 and Year 6 learning support lessons, while Mrs Cantle has been on leave. When the new Sportsmaster is appointed, he or she will take on all PE lessons and most Health lessons, resulting in Mrs Jones’ contract concluding. I thank Mrs Jones for her intelligent, thoughtful and positive contributions in both roles. Mrs Jones will continue to work at our School as a supply teacher. Mrs Shelley Clews has taught a Year 4 class on a one year contract during 2018 and concludes her time at our School at the end of the term. Her work with the boys in Year 4 is acknowledged. It is appropriate that I acknowledge the fine work of Mr Mike Sharpe, Deputy Head of Junior School. In addition to his normal responsibilities, Mr Sharpe has been acting Sportsmaster since late last term. I thank Mike for his hard work and taking on this additional load as we advertise for a new Sportsmaster. I also acknowledge the work of Mrs Liz Pratt, who does much of the administrative work associated with Junior School sport. Parents will be informed of the new Sportsmaster in due course. Junior School Supporters’ Group The Junior School Supporters’ Group hosted a range of social events during the year and raised funds for the benefit of the boys. I would like to commend the fine work of the Junior School Supporters’ Group in 2018. Mrs Bliss Bierhoff, President of the Group, spent significant time working for the benefit of the Junior School. I thank Bliss for her endeavours on behalf of the students and for her support of the Junior School. Mrs Melissa Buckley was the Vice President, Mrs Kim Brown was the Treasurer and Mrs Lyn Paton undertook the role of Secretary. All three ladies were active in their support of and organisation with many of the Supporters’ Group functions and I appreciate their many and varied contributions. I also thank the many other parents who assisted with various functions and events.

The Supporters’ Group’s AGM was held last week and the following positions were filled for next year: President Mrs Bliss Bierhoff Vice President Mrs Melissa Buckley Treasurer Mrs Kim Brown Secretary Mrs Lyn Paton I congratulate these parents and look forward to their contributions next year. Speech Day Parents are reminded that Speech Day will be held in the Senior School Assembly Hall on Wednesday 28 November, commencing at 9.00am. School holidays for the boys will officially commence following the Speech Day ceremony, which will conclude at approximately 10.20am. Please note, all boys from Prep to Year 6 are expected to attend Speech Day. Boys will still need to arrive at school prior to 8.20am in Blazer Uniform and spend a short amount of time in class before teachers take the boys to the Senior School Assembly Hall. Prize winners and musicians will need to arrive at school by 8.00am, proceeding straight to the Senior School Assembly Hall. Conclusion As this is the final Junior School newsletter for the year, I would like to acknowledge the Junior School staff for their hard work in 2018. Finally, and as always, I would like to acknowledge the efforts, achievements and enthusiasm of all the boys and congratulate them on a fine year. I wish all families an enjoyable, safe and relaxing holiday period, a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Kind regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School On behalf of the Junior School parents and boys, I would like to sincerely thank Leanne Farrell for co-coordinating the school banking for the final part of the year. Lost Property There are many items in the Lost Property box. It is important that these items are collected before the end of the school year. The location of the Lost Property box is near the side entrance to the Junior School staff room. I wish all families of our wonderful school a very happy festive season and holiday. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From the Head of Teaching and Learning

Keep Reading Over the Summer Holidays! The Tim Tam Assembly reminds us that reading is an integral part of our holiday program. Once the Tim Tams have been eaten, how do you motivate your son to keep reading daily during the summer break?

Ensure you son has borrowed some books from the school library.

Set aside a time every day when the whole family reads.

Read aloud and enjoy the story together. Talking about the book helps to develop

vocabulary, reading comprehension and enjoyment of reading.

Take books everywhere you go – on road trips; to the doctor’s or dentist’s office; when

visiting family or friends.

Buy books as Christmas presents or give a book voucher so your son can choose his

own books.

Visit the Council Library regularly.

Read recipes and instructions – both in books and online.

Plan trips and special activities using tourist brochures and websites.

Exercising reading muscles every day helps to strengthen and maintain the literacy skills your son has been learning and practising all year. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and we look forward to seeing well-exercised reading muscles next year.

Jan Heffernan Head of Teaching and Learning

Summer Reading Summer means a much needed break for children, but it can also mean a break in learning and, in many cases, a regrettable loss of newly developed reading skills. Summer doesn’t need to stall your child’s progress, and it can even be an opportunity to gain reading fluency and enthusiasm. The best books you can borrow for your child during the holidays are the ones that your child will actually enjoy reading. Children are, unsurprisingly more likely to read when they find a story interesting and engaging. With all that in mind, the boys are welcomed to borrow over the holidays. The library is open every day at 8.00am and closes at 4.00pm; please feel welcomed to visit the library with your son and choose some books to take home for the holidays. Every year Australia’s leading booksellers put together a reading guide for children. If you are looking for inspiration or ideas for your son, this guide is recommended. http://www.kidsreadingguide.com.au/ Michelle Worthington Teacher Librarian
