From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Our weekly Assembly is held each Thursday, commencing at 2.20pm in the Junior School Hall. The aim for our assemblies is to celebrate boys’ efforts and achievements. This encompasses musicians (individual and ensembles), assembly certificates, class presentations, House points being updated, birthdays for the week, along with the National Anthem and School Song. Parents are always most welcome to attend. P – 12 Open Day, Thursday 9 March The School will be hosting a P – 12 Open Day on Thursday 9 March from 9.00am until 12.00pm. This will operate as a normal school day with tours of the Junior School and Senior School occurring at 9.00am and 11.00am. If you have friends who are interested in sending their son to Toowoomba Grammar School can I please encourage you to mention the Open Day to them? Traffic Issues A number of staff and parents have talked to me during the past few weeks about concerns with traffic around the school and particularly in the main drive-through area off Herries Street and the carpark. I ask all parents to exercise patience and tolerance when using this area. Some basic expectations include:

Driving slowly and safely in and around the school

Being polite to other parents

Moving to the front of the drive-through area when collecting and dropping off

Moving around the loop if your son is not in the pick-up zone

Not using the disabled parking space unless you or your child are disabled

Not parking in the drive-through and walking into the school.

Some of our youngest boys still use child booster seats and require assistance to be strapped into their seats. As such, some parents may need to get out of their cars to help put seat belts on. I would expect every child is wearing a seat belt before cars move off out of the drive through. Please be patient if another parent is taking care of this fundamental safety requirement. So, how was school today? Most parents would have asked this question of their children on multiple occasions. For many boys the typical response is, ‘Good.’ Hardly illuminating for parents. Some families have nice routines that encourage conversation and enlighten everyone about the day. I am aware of one Year 6 boy’s afternoon routine, which involves his mum collecting him and as they drive home she asks him about the best things that happened in his day. Many families eat dinner together every night and each family member talks about the best parts of the day. The Australian Council of State School Organisations (ACSSO) recently released a series of open ended questions that are likely to elicit extended answers to the question at the start of this section. I have trialled some of these questions with my two boys over the past week or so and this has led to some interesting, extended conversation. The questions are outlined on the next page. You can also collect a copy of these questions from the Junior School office if you wish.

I hope parents find this helpful and enjoy extended conversations with their children. Kind regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day Students from the Junior School will be taking part in the Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 3 March. The areas allocated to the Junior School are the streets surrounding the school and the school grounds. The boys will be fully supervised during the experience and will be doing this in their Mates’ groups. Parents are welcome to join us. The time of the clean-up will be from 9.45am to 10.25am and we will be departing from the area under the Junior School sails. The boys will need to bring along a pair of rubber gloves (disposable ones are fine) and a bag, be it hessian or plastic. School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. For those students who don’t yet have a school banking account with the Commonwealth Bank, there are information packs available at the office. The program also offers financial benefits for our school. These include $5.00 for every account opened. Students also receive various rewards for deposit targets reached. Please encourage your son to open a Dollarmite account and make regular deposits. Regards

Learning Support / Extension ACER Scholarships Boys in Year 6 who are participating in the ACER Scholarship exam this Saturday, should meet at the Senior School Assembly Hall from 8.10am, ready for an 8.30am start. Boys should bring a pencil case and their morning tea with them as there will be a break around 10.00am. Boys are permitted to wear casual clothes. The exam will conclude at noon. Parents are asked to collect their sons from the Senior School Assembly Hall from 11.45am. Homework At Toowoomba Grammar School, all students from primary school through to high school will receive homework on a regular basis. Homework can provide important opportunities for children to:

practice what they have learned in school

get more in-depth information

apply skills more broadly

obtain important learning and organisational skills

learn how to work independently with self-discipline

Homework also helps parents get a sense of what their children are doing in school, find out how well they are doing, and improve their relationships with their children. The amount and type of homework that is given varies widely, even within the same school and cohort. Generally, as children get older, they receive more homework, and the homework becomes more difficult.

At Toowoomba Grammar School our handbook clearly sets out our expectations around approximate allocations per night. This will of course differ from student to student. The kind of help children need from parents may also change as children get older. For example, younger children may need to be watched closely while completing homework. They may need frequent help from parents in order to complete the work. Older children will probably need less help in completing their homework, but you may need to check their homework for mistakes and make sure that it gets finished. Research has shown that boys have a harder time than girls with the motivation and organisational skills they need to successfully complete homework. They may need more help from you. Children who are insecure about their academic abilities may also need you to encourage them. Check over their homework with them and help them to understand their mistakes, understand the material, and correctly complete the work. There is no one right way to set up rules for homework. Every child and family has different needs, styles, and resources. However, finding a system that works well for your child is important. Setting up good study and homework habits early on will make it easier to do homework successfully as children get older. For more information or further tips on homework success, please feel free to contact us at any time. The Learning Support Team Lucy MacFarlane, Heidi Russell and Alison Cantle

Sport Report

On Friday 10 February, some boys from Years 5 and 6 went down to Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane to swim at a GPS pre-meet against Brisbane Grammar School and Brisbane Boys’ College. There was a lot of tough competition but all of the boys swam very well. Ryan Grimes was a standout considering he has a broken wrist. I think that it was a great experience for all of the boys who have never been to Chandler before. I would like to thank Mrs Galbraith, Mr Stewart, Mr Anderson and Miss Little for organising this event. Thank you Hugh Pollock Swimming Captain

Nice News Story Ryan Grimes showed amazing sportsmanship at recent swimming events. He not only swam with a broken arm that was mostly healed, he qualified to swim for Darling Downs and obtained a new PB. Well done Ryan, your determination needs to be commended.

Trinity of London Drama and Singing Exam Results

Late last year 26 TGS Junior and Senior School boys sat their Trinity of London Singing and Speech and Drama exams. The exams were held in November in Old Hall. All boys reported enjoying their examination experience, were fascinated by the English/Welsh accents of the examiners who had flown from London to examine in Australia, and we happily report all students achieved outstanding results. The Trinity of London Certificates have arrived from London and the Junior School boys will be presented with their certificates by Mr Campbell at Assembly shortly.

We are delighted to announce the following Junior School results:

Speech and Drama Charlie Payne (High Distinction), Will Sullivan (Merit), Angus Dann (High Distinction), Andrew Kisiel (Distinction), Lachie McNamee (Merit), Hayden Fellenberg (High Merit), George Smolenski (Merit), Fred Smolenski (Merit), Tui Rei (Merit), Will Anderson (High Distinction) Darcy Meagher (High Distinction).

Music News Musicians’ Concert A note went home earlier this week inviting all instrumental and singing students from Prep to Year 6 to nominate to perform in our first Musicians’ Concert for the year. Performing in this concert is a wonderful way to celebrate the solo work your son is achieving on his instrument in front of a supportive environment of classmates, teachers and parents. The concert will be held on Thursday 9 March in the Junior School Hall, commencing at 2.10pm. If your son would like to nominate himself to perform at the concert he is required to complete a nomination form and return it to his class teacher by Tuesday 28 February. A successful list of nominations will placed in the Music notice board located between the Music Department and the Junior School Hall at the beginning of Week 7 (Monday 6 March).

After School Care

What we have done this past fortnight This past fortnight we have been working on getting into routines that help the service run smoother and better for the boys. We have been getting plenty of outside time where the boys are free to choose an activity that they want to extend on. They have also been playing cricket as a group as the boys all seem to have a high interest in it. Inside the boys have been creating some marvellous marble runs and Lego houses, and have been exploring with constructing different things out of different equipment we have in the room.

What we have planned for the next week Next week we will be having discussions around leadership roles for the boys so they can have a little more responsibility and give the boys a sense of ownership within the service. We will also be creating a family tree that all the boys will get to put their name on and see it develop through the year as we may gain more boys to add to it.

What to do if your child is absent from After School Care? Please remember parents if your child/ren are going to be absent from the service or have gone home sick please call us on 0421 570 461 or notify the customer experience team.
