The blond ambitious rapper with a killer flow from the Australian outback has finally made it and she’s not afraid to rap about it. Iggy Azalea, 23, has been hustling to get to where she is since she first landed in Miami at 16, and the main theme of the 12-track “The New Classic” is her dream of becoming accomplished in hip-hop through hard work and unwillingness to be thwarted by bad deals, critics and industry pressures. That’s espe-cially on tracks such as “Walk the Line,” ‘’Don’t Need Y’all” and the dark “Impossible Is Nothing.”

“First deal changed me, robbed blind, basically raped me ... studied the Carters till a deal was offered,

slept cold on the floor recording,” she spits on “Work,” not as a com-plaint, but as a badge of honor.

Musically, the album leans toward a blend of pop and electro beats. The rappers of the heyday that led Azalea to this path may shake their heads at this softball version of their craft, but it’s not called “The New Classic” for nothing. It’s a fresher take of the rhyming arts, flipping its inher-ent misogyny and machismo on its head with a few disappointing exceptions (just bypass the wealth flashing “New (Expletive).”) Over-all, this is a women’s empowerment record.

Rita Ora’s velvet voice adds another layer to the anti-love slow burn of the Stargate-produced

“Black Widow,” a song that has a writing credit from Katy Perry. Charli XCX — from “I Love It” fame with Icona Pop — contributes to the playful electro tune “Fancy,” while Azalea’s mentor, T.I., gives her a hand with that whole “Change Your Life” thing.

If Azalea doesn’t fall into the trap of rapping only about her designer clothes and wealth in the future, and keeps her eyes on the artsy prize, she might just become an old classic.

LAS VEGAS — A group including casino com-pany MGM Resorts announced plans Monday to build a 33-acre (13.35-hectare) open-air music venue on the Las Vegas Strip to host a four-day Rock in Rio USA festival beginning in May 2015. MGM Resorts International officials said the “City of Rock” development to be built between the Cir-cus Circus resort and Sahara Avenue would serve as home to what they expect will be one of the larg-est concert festival events in the world.

Rock in Rio began in 1985 in Brazil, where 600,000 tickets for the event last September sold out in four hours, according to organizers. Headliners included Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Metallica and Bruce Springsteen. The organization also produces festivals in Portugal and Spain.

Rock in Rio founder Roberto Medina said he was excited to partner for the first Rock in Rio USA event in the heart of Las Vegas with casino giant MGM Resorts, multiple Las Vegas show producer Cirque du Soleil and developer Ron Burkle of the California-based Yucaipa Companies LLC.

Bill Hornbuckle, president of MGM Resorts Inter-national, noted dramatic changes in the entertainment industry in recent years and said he believed the four-day music festival in Las Vegas would draw more than 300,000 people. The layout is expected to include five stages, themed streets featuring sights, sounds and foods of Brazil, the U.S. and the United Kingdom, plus thrill rides and shopping. Cost figures and site plans for the City of Rock development weren’t made public and will need approval from Clark County lawmakers. Tickets are expected to go on sale in January.

The event will be separate from the three-night Electric Daisy Carnival electronic music festival, held in June at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It attracts more than 100,000 people, according to its parent company, Insomniac.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The largest of Lombok’s three Gili islands and a popular destination for tourists looking for a re-mote island experience, Gili Trawangan is famous for its pristine beaches and first class diving and snorkeling locations, thanks to the abundance of marine life and colorful coral formations under the clear blue sea.

Aston Sunset Beach Resort – Gili Trawangan is beautifully located on the west side of the island, featuring 114 rooms, 10 one-bedroom Pool Villas and 1 Royal Pool Suite. Each room features its own terrace, and for added luxury, the resort boasts its own private beach to watch the breathtaking sunset over Mount Agung.

The resort also includes a signature restaurant, a lounge and bar, a club lounge, a pool bar and 1 meeting room. For leisure activities, the resort has

an outdoor swimming pool, its own dive centre, an onsite spa, as well as bicycle rental for guests looking to explore the island.

The rebranding of the resort commenced at the beginning of April 2014. It can be reached via Bali and Lombok on a short flight, as well as a number of speed boat options that dock directly on the island.

Archipelago International have a further 6 hotel projects under development on the mainland of Lombok, including two favehotels and a 3-star Aston City hotel in Mataram, as well as a 4-star Aston hotel and a favehotel in Senggigi. The Head of Tabanan Health Agency, I Nyoman Suratmika, said on Monday (Apr 21) that although the dengue case tended to increase, it did not lead to death case. All the patients were still handled properly. In Tabanan, the dengue still posed a sporadic case and there was no sudden increase. “In general, the dengue case is found in all subdis-tricts. However, indeed there are four subdistricts indicated to be the most vulnerable areas to dengue cases namely the Tabanan, Kediri, Kerambitan and Selemadeg. The four regions had a high population mobilization,” he explained.

In addition to be caused by mos-quito development with environ-mental factors, the high mobility of people also allowed them to be con-tracted outside Tabanan. Even, the extreme weather also contributed to the rampant transmission of dengue case. “The most effective effort to stop the dengue case is the eradica-tion of mosquito nests. However,

the fogging intended to kill adult mosquitoes is expected to suppress this case,” he said.

Suratmika said that his party had intensively performed fogging in a number of areas considered vul-nerable to dengue. For example, a number of areas considered shabby and densely populated were good places for dengue carrier mosquitoes to easily breed.

He also added that all this time the public was still difficult to distinguish between dengue and Cikungunya disease because the symptoms were almost identical even though they were equally caused by mosquito bites. The difference of Cikungunya disease was in terms of patient condi-tion that experienced flu-like symp-toms such as high fever accompanied with body aches. Cikungunya disease was often not reported because it could heal itself. “Actually, if patients can get immediate help the dengue will not cause fatal things like death,” he explained. (kmb28)

Bali PostGIANYAR - Record of the In-

donesian Record Museum (MURI) in preparing twisted satay with the highest number becomes the seizure of two counties in Bali. Previously, Tabanan County could break the MURI record with a total amount of 32,420 skewers of twisted satay by involving 1,629 participants, but on Sunday night (Apr 21) Gianyar County replaced the MURI record with the acquisition of 45,125 skew-ers of twisted satay by involving 3,935 students as participants.

The making of twisted satay from marine fish was held in conjunction with the series of Gianyar Culinary Festival 2014 to commemorate the 243rd anniversary of Gianyar Town at the Ciung Wanara Urban Park, Gianyar. Senior Manager of the

MURI, Paul Pangka, said the total amount of twisted satay reached 45,125 skewers with 3,935 students as participants along 1 km. It was made from 5.6 quintals of satay batter. “This record is registered in the MURI with number to 6438 and managed to break the previous record achieved by Tabanan County with a total of 32,420 skewers of twisted satay involving 1,629 par-ticipants,” he said.

Creative Team Leader of the Gianyar Culinary Festival (GCF) 2014, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, explained the ingredients were obtained from the satay vendors on Lebih Beach coming to about 5.6 quintals and it involved totally 3,935 students from 45 high schools and vocational schools across Gian-yar. She said the event, which is called “Wonderful Adventure In-donesia: Asia Pacific Hash (WAI: ASPAC 2014) and initiated by her ministry, is expected to have a multiple effect on the tourism sector, given the success of the International Hash in Borobudur, Central Java, in 2012.

The event is scheduled between May 8 and May 13 and will take place not only in Bali but also in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and Labuan Bajo and Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara provinces.

While in Bali from May 8-10, participants will visit and tour Sanur Beach in Denpasar, Sangeh in Badung district, Margarana He-roes’ Cemetery in Tabanan district, Tampaksiring in Gianyar and Goa Lawah in Klungkung.

The route covers three sections of five, seven and 12 kilometers, respectively.

Bali PostGIANYAR - The realm of the art and

culture existing in Gianyar County is inseparable from some challenges. For in-stance, commercialization can later on lead to routines and ignore the quality of the art and the culture itself. “It has happened since the first decade of the 21st century,” said the humanist, Prof. I Wayan Geria.

Geria said the frequent marginaliza-tion of the art and artists in their own home would increasingly make the art maestros and their successors scarce. Marginalization of touristic arts happened due to local competition and external pressures, dynamics of the involutional art movement, sluggishness and absence of innovation. Moral crisis, erosion of character and stagnating index of people’s welfare, he said.

With the blueprint for revitalization, the arts and culture would be adapted to the format of the UNESCO. Blueprint in the form of a book would be expected to provide useful information for cultural preservation and development of Gianyar.

“This blueprint is expected to characterize national identity, national character and can be used as a network in international level, diplomacy, peaceful world order to livelihoods,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Gianyar, Anak Agung Gde Agung Bharata, said the context of a world without insulation, melt-ing of ethnicity barriers, nationality, race, religion, geopolitics as well as fast and instant dynamics of the world had caused the traditions, lifestyle and spirituality to be under pressure, marginalized, distorted and disintegrated.

Bali had always got a lot of respect and showed off various potentials. West Bali (Jembrana) had been famous for its Jegog Dance and Buffalo Races (Makepung), Karangasem for its Geringsing clothes, Buleleng for its Gong Kebyar gamelan music and Badung for its cultural tourism. Meanwhile, Gianyar bloomed as the art region being rich in the work of genius arts. Commitment to maintain them should be recorded as a cultural heritage for future generations. (kmb16)

DENPASAR - Around 2,000 participants from 18 countries are scheduled to take part in the “Asia Pacific Hash (ASPAC) 2014” in Bali on May 8. “The hashers will visit natural tourist destinations, historical monuments, enjoy traditional culinary products and stay in the local people’s houses during the event,” minister of tourism and creative economy Mari Elka Pangestu said during a coordination meeting in preparation for the event.

Darussalam, China, Denmark, the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, In-dia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States.

“The ‘tourists with special inter-ests’ will be more beneficial because they may stay in Bali up to three weeks, with an average spending of US$3,000 per person. So, just imagine how much will be collected from the 2,000 ASPAC participants. Regular tourists generally only spend US$1,140,” Mari said.

The head of the ASPAC 2014 organizing committee, Supriyadi, said hashers will wear a unique costume during the opening cer-emony, namely wearing a red female dress.

“The event is also being held to raise funds to be donated to temples, orphanages or villages in Bali. Although, they will wear a red dress, there is nothing political in it,” he said.

Red is the color of a political

party in the country now preparing along with other political parties for the presidential election on July 9.

At the meeting, several district/

city administrations had expressed their readiness to spend part of their budget for promoting the success of the event.

The ministry of tourism and cre-ative economy has allocated Rp3 bil-lion out of the total Rp6 billion budget needed to organize the event.

Buffalo Races (Makepung) should become cultural heritage that can’t be margina-lise by commercialization of tourism.

The iPhone and iPad maker is detailing its efforts to cultivate a greener Apple Inc. in an environ-mental section on the company’s website that debuted Monday. The site highlights the ways that the Cupertino, California, com-pany is increasing its reliance on alternative power sources and sending less electronic junk to landfills.

Apple had already been dis-tributing gift cards at some of its 420 worldwide stores in ex-change for iPhones and iPods still in good enough condition to be resold. Now, all of the company’s stores will recycle any Apple product at no charge. Gift cards won’t be handed out for recycled products deemed to have little or no resale value.

The offer covers a wide array of electronics that aren’t sup-posed to be dumped in landfills

because of the toxins in them. In the past seven years alone, Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones, iPods, iPads and Mac computers.

The new initiative, timed to coincide with Tuesday’s annual celebration of Earth Day, strives to position Apple as an environ-mental steward amid the techno-logical whirlwind of gadgets and Internet services that have been drawing more electricity from power plants that primarily run on natural gas and coal.

Technology products and ser-vices accounted for about 2 percent of worldwide emissions in 2012, roughly the same as the airline industry, according to statistics cited by environmental protection group Greenpeace in a report released earlier this month. Some of biggest electric-ity demands come from huge data

centers that house the stacks of computers that process search requests, store photos and email and stream video.

These online services, often dubbed “cloud computing,” col-lectively consume more electric-ity than all but five countries — China, the U.S., Japan, India and Russia. As the world’s larg-est technology company, Apple is trying to hatch more environmen-tal solutions than problems.

“What the company wants to do is use all our innovation and all of our expertise to make the planet more secure and make the environment better,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental initiatives, said in a Monday interview. Jackson ran the Environmental Protection Agency under President Barack Obama before joining Apple last June.

Tired of the same restaurants and clubs? Not sure if friends would want to venture to a new cafe or bar? New apps show where people want to go, rather than where they have been. Superb, an iPhone app that launched last week, lets users create lists of popular places they would like to visit and shows them a list of other people who would also like to go there.

“It’s all about hanging out in the real world and getting offline, and the best way to do that is to know where people want to go,” said Eddy Lu, co-founder and chief executive of Venice, California-based Superb. The app displays full-screen images of venues such as restaurants, museums and hiking trails. A swipe to the right adds the venue to the user’s to-do list, while a swipe to the left side indicates they are not interested. Tapping the middle button indicates they have already been there.

It also reveals friends who would like to visit a venue. “With Facebook and Four-square it’s all about ‘This is where I was’ or ‘This is where I am’ but we’re all about future intent - not the present or the past,” Lu said, referring to the social media sites. Other apps such as Yelp and Foursquare work in a similar way by creating lists of places users would like to visit. Music apps, including Bandsintown, show users concerts their friends are attending, and Eventbrite,

Plancast and Meetup indicate which friends are attending other events.

Sosh, an iPhone app available in San Fran-cisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington and New York, is another way to discover things to do in cities. “Every single person no matter their age, gender or location all have a question they ask themselves which is ‘What should we do?’” said Rishi Mandal, co-founder and CEO of San Francisco-based company Sosh. “We help them answer that question.”

The app curates a list of events in cities such as a guest chef appearing at a restau-rant, a new show, or a special experience at a bar. “There’s a bar doing a Girl Scout cookie pairing menu, for example. They ask you which cookie is your favorite, and pair it with a cocktail. So it’s not an event or a place, it’s a more elusive thing to do,” said Mandal. After friends agree on an activity a new, free iPhone app called Klutch can help them manage the scheduling.

“We’re losing interaction with people because they are connecting through technol-ogy rather than real meetups - and one of the biggest barriers is figuring out the details of when and where to meet,” said Hunter Gray, the founder and CEO of Klutch, based in Santa Monica, California.

With Klutch, users can scan calendars to pinpoint when and where everyone is meet-ing and the app automatically adds events to the attendees’ calendar once the plans are fi-nalized, including a map to the destination.

“I showed up, I’m back, and I am going to finish what I didn’t finish last year,” said Mary Cunningham, 50, of St. Petersburg, Florida, who was stopped a mile short of the fin-ish line by the explosions on April 15, 2013. The two pressure-cooker bombs that went off near the end of the 26.2-mile (42.16-kilometer) course killed three people and wounded more than 260 in a hellish spectacle of torn limbs, smoke and broken glass.

This year, police were deployed in force along the route, with heli-copters circling above and bomb-sniffing dogs checking trash cans. “Boston Strong” — the unofficial slogan adopted after the terrorist attack — was everywhere. “I think

I’m going to start crying at the starting line, and I’m not sure I’ll stop until I cross the finish line,” said Katie O’Donnell, a doctor at Children’s Hospital who was stopped less than a mile from the end last year.

At 2:49 p.m., the time the bombs went off, spectators ob-served a moment of silence at the finish line. It was followed by some of the loudest cheers of the day as people whooped, clapped and rang cowbells. Joe Ebert, of Hampton, New Hampshire, was cheering on his son-in-law near the spot in downtown Boston where the bombs went off. He was there last year, too.

“Just wanted to let them know

that they can’t beat us down. I think it makes us all stronger when some-thing like that happens,” he said. Also among the spectators near the finish line was Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the bombing. It was the first time he had returned to the area since the attack.

“It feels great” to be back, he said. “I feel very safe.” Sabrina Dello Russo, 38, of South Boston, was running her first marathon for a good friend, Roseann Sdoia, who lost her right leg in the bombing.

“She is my inspiration from day one last year when I saw her in the ICU. Every run I do, she is in the back of my head, and she will be keeping me going today,” Dello Russo said.

MEXICO CITY — With two heads of state and thousands of tearful admirers, Mexico bid farewell on Monday to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Colombian Nobel laureate considered one of the greatest Spanish-language authors of all time. The ashes of the author, who died Thursday at age 87, were received at Mexico City’s majestic Palace of Fine Arts to several minutes of thunderous applause after being placed on a black pedestal by his widow, Mercedes Barcha, and his two sons, Gonzalo and Rodrigo.

He was eulogized in a brief ceremony in the dramatic art deco lobby by the presidents of both Mexico and Colombia, two coun-tries linked by the writer through his birth, life, heritage and career. “We come as admirers and friends of Gabo from all corners of the planet,” said Colombian Presi-dent Juan Manuel Santos, using the nickname by which Garcia Marquez was known throughout Latin America.

“He will live on in his books and writings. But more than any-thing he will live forever in the hopes of humanity. Eternal glory to someone who has given us so much glory,” Santos added.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said the writer’s death was “a great loss not only for lit-erature but for humanity. Various generations ... found answers to the questions of life in his stories and tales.” Attendees released a flurry of yellow paper butterflies, one of Garcia Marquez’s most famous literary images from “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and the author’s favorite color.

Garcia Marquez lived in Mex-ico for decades and wrote some of his best-known works here, including “Solitude.” Before the speeches, thousands of people stood in a line stretching more than a kilometer (a half mile) waiting for their turn to pass by the simple urn decorated with yellows roses during a three-hour tribute open to the public.

Dignitaries, friends and art-ists took turns as honor guards, including Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera and Ra-fael Tovar y de Teresa, president of Mexico’s National Council for Culture and the Arts. “Gabo was a watershed in my life,” said Nelly Hernandez, a 52-year-old teacher who was waiting outside the Palace of Fine Arts for the doors to open, holding a pair of yellow paper butterflies. “He taught me to relish life through literature.”

BOSTON — Nearly 32,000 runners hit the streets in the first Boston Marathon since last year’s deadly bombing, sending a powerful message of resilience amid heavy security that included a battery of sur-veillance cameras and police officers on rooftops. In what some saw as altogether fitting, an American — Eritrean-American Meb Keflizighi — won the men’s division Monday for the first time in more than 30 years, dominating a field that included many athletes who were prevented from completing the race last year.

BANGLI - Mugging action afflicting foreigner occurred again in Badung. At this time the citizen of German origin, Isabella Maria Gorney, became the victim of grabbing after passing through the Eco Beach restaurant at Canggu, North Kuta, Badung , Monday (Apr 22). Due to this incident, the victim was estimated to suffer losses worth IDR 18 million.

Encountered when reporting the mugging case, Isabella described that such incident occurred after attend-ing a yoga exercise at Canggu village around 10:00 a.m., and then she wanted to return to her lodging at Villa Kotak at Jalan Pererenan 18B Canggu, North Kuta, Badung. “After my yoga exercise, I was back to the villa by riding a bike,” she said in a pale face.

When passing through the Eco Beach restaurant around 10:30 a.m., said Isa-bella, unexpectedly an unknown person came up from the right side. Suddenly, it made the student at one of the uni-versities in Germany lost balance while

riding her bicycle. But, she still tried to save herself by speeding the bike. “At first the perpetrator came up from the side, for fear I was trying to speed up the pace of the bike,” she added.

The perpetrator riding a motorcycle successfully approached the victim and then pulled her pink bag containing a unit of iPhone 4, a unit of Blackberry Torch, cash worth IDR 1 million and key of the villa room. Although she had maintained, the perpetrator riding a motorcycle could draw the bag more powerfully. “I could resist but he was stronger to grab my bag as riding mo-torcycle,” she complained while adding that the incident was reported to North Kuta Police.

Chief of North Kuta Police Criminal Investigation, Panji Pratista, when asked for his confirmation justified the case. He said his party would immediately conduct an investigation to preserve the stability of the region. Besides, due to the mugging, the victim was estimated to suffer losses worth IDR 18 million. “We will immediately investigate this case,” he said. (nik)

One of the current efforts made by the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency was encouraging residents to raise their awareness and chang-ing the behavior of disposing rubbish into the river through the river preservation competition. This effort was rolled out by the Sanita-tion and Landscaping Agency in collaboration with one of the foun-dations that concerned with rubbish problems in Buleleng.

The Head of Buleleng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP), Nyoman Genep, said on Monday (Apr 21) that in Singaraja town there were two rivers namely the Buleleng River and Banyuasri Riv-er. In addition, there were several rivers whose stream was smaller than the two rivers in the urban area. Those rivers crossed a number of villages. For long time, those rivers were often taken advantage as loca-tion to dispose rubbish by residents near the river flows. Even, the riv-ers were often taken advantage as

bathing place and toilet (MCK) by residents. After it rained, it would bring river debris from the upstream and then piled up on the beach.

“We do not close our eyes to this reality and the rivers in urban areas are still polluted by rubbish disposed by residents and river debris after it rains,” he said.

According to Genep, the Sanita-tion and Landscaping Agency had attempted to address these issues lately by fighting the rubbish pol-luting the rivers. Cleanup movement by involving technical agencies, stu-dents, scouts and the private sectors began to be intensively conducted. In addition, the efforts were also car-ried out to make people aware of the sanitation and change their behavior in order not to make the rivers as a place to dispose rubbish.

To stimulate the awareness of residents, the Sanitation and Land-scaping Agency in cooperation with one of the foundations addressing rubbish issues organized the com-

petition of river preservation. The competition had been rolled out by involving seven villages whose territory was crossed by river in urban areas.

The competition determined three villages as the winners. Banjar Bali village went to the first winner being entitled to get a permanent

trophy, rotating trophy of the Bule-leng Regent, coaching fund worth IDR 10 million. The second winner came to Banjar Jawa village getting a rotating trophy and coaching fund worth IDR 7 million and the third winner was Astina village getting permanent trophy and coaching fund worth IDR 5 million. Mean-

while, four other villages that could not win in the competition were given trash bins.

“Hopefully, with the participa-tion of residents and private sector this effort can free up the rubbish that contaminates the rivers and beaches in our area,” he added. (mud)

GIANYAR - Heavy rain flushing Gianyar on Saturday night (Apr 19) made the peak of celebra-tion of the Gianyar anniversary in disarray. One of them, the exhibition tent of the SMEs located in the Astina Raya Square, Gianyar, collapsed. A number of handicraft items in the exhibition booths were damaged. Other than collapsing, the rainwater at the location also rose, so it soaked some handicraft products on display.

The losses due to such incident were estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs. In addi-tion to the exhibition of the SMEs, some children playgrounds could not be functioned due to rain.

Although the exhibition stands collapsed, luck-ily no casualties were reported in the incident. Amidst such heavy rain, many visitors including the owners of the goods exhibited were equally in the tent. Heavy rains occurred around 6 o’clock at night. Due to toppled over by the tent, the most se-rious damaged was suffered by silver handicrafts. Glass showcase belonging to the exhibitors were destroyed. A number of their silver jewelries were washed away.

Similar condition was experienced by the exhibi-tion booths displaying incense, prayer fittings and other handicrafts. Ni Kadek Sucitasari, an attendant

of exhibition stand, told that such incident forced her to evacuate the entire items exhibited. Most booths had collapsed, while others slanted but were not submerged in water because of flooding.

The flood occurred in the Astina Raya Square was as high as an adult’s knee. In the area of agricultural exhibition, a number of plants and seedlings were damaged by flood. Even, a num-ber of fruits were floating. Seeing such condition, visitors preferred to keep away and moved on to the area of bonsai contest.

Responding to the disaster, some SME entre-preneurs expected the government to consider the losses they suffered. Although the booth rental was subsidized but the third party who rented the exhibition stand should also be responsible. Participant of the SME exhibition amounted to 30 artisans.

When asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Apr 20), the Head of Gianyar Trade and Industry Agency, Wayan Suamba, said that in response to the damage the third party had repaired the collapsed tents. His party would conduct an evaluation of the incident with the craftsmen and coordinated it with the third party. Such incident certainly resulted in the loss. “This matter will be discussed after the exhibition is over,” he ex-plained. (kmb16)

TOKYO — Japanese and U.S. ne-gotiators have not managed to reach a basic agreement on a free trade pact that might have served as a centerpiece for President Barack Obama’s visit to Tokyo this week.

Japan’s economy minister Akira Amari told reporters Tuesday that the two sides remained “at a considerable distance” over trade in farm products and vehicles, a day before Obama arrives.

He said the two sides would con-tinue talks ahead of Obama’s summit on Thursday with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

A Japan-U.S. agreement is seen as crucial for progress on a wider deal for the 12 nations involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP aims to set rules for trade and is seen as a precursor to a future wide free-trade arrangement for the Pacific Rim region.

In one positive sign, the data showed a 3.7 percent in-crease in circulation revenues to $10.87 billion, helped by digital subscriptions and “paywalls.”

The figures showed revenue from all digital sources including advertising, circulation and marketing, rose 5.8 percent and accounted for 12 percent of total industry revenue.

But newspapers continued to see declines in print adver-tising, which has long been their most important revenue source.

Advertising in the traditional printed daily and Sunday newspaper decreased 8.6 percent to $17.3 billion. Digital advertising only partly offset that, rising 1.5 percent to $3.4 billion.

Poynter Institute researcher Rick Edmonds said the over-all performance of the industry was the best since 2006.

But Edmonds noted that because the trade association made changes in how it calculates figures, using different sources of revenue in the computation, “total industry rev-enue figures for the last two years cannot meaningfully be compared to those for earlier years.”

“Though digital ad revenue gains again failed to make up for print revenue losses, there was mildly encouraging news on that front,” Edmonds said in a blog post.

“Despite continued downward pressure on prices and tough competition from digital giants with virtually no news operations, the industry eked out a gain.”

Others say the figures don’t tell the full story of the bleak state of the newspaper industry.

“I think what this report says is that the newspaper business has to find ways to innovate itself out of the mess in which it finds itself,” says Dan Kennedy, a journalism professor at Northeastern University.

“Although these figures are not calamitous, they are not all that impressive either.”

Kennedy said that advertising “is never going to come back in the way it has in the past, because businesses no longer need newspapers to reach their customers. The Internet gives them a lot of different ways to reach their customers.” Alan Mutter, a former newspaper editor who now is a consultant specializing in new media ventures, said total ad revenues for the newspaper industry have been cut in half since a 2005 peak at $49 billion.

Mutter said the key problem for newspapers is that they are not keeping pace with the competition for digital advertising -- as most of the revenue shifts to non-media companies like Google or Facebook.

“Digital advertising rose a mere 1.5 percent to $3.4 bil-lion in 2013 at the same time that digital sales surged 17 percent across all digital categories in the United States,” Mutter writes in a blog post.

“Back in 2003, newspapers had a 14 percent share of the national digital advertising market. In 2013, they had barely eight percent of the market.”

Mutter added that “the ongoing inability of newspapers to compete effectively in this emerging marketplace may be an even bigger problem than the traumatic collapse in print ad-vertising that they have suffered over the last eight years.”

WASHINGTON - US newspapers suffered further revenue declines in 2013, seeing only mixed success in a transition to digital, according to industry figures. Total newspaper industry revenue amounted to $37.59 billion in 2013, a 2.6 percent drop from $38.60 billion in 2012, according to a report released Friday by the Newspaper Association of America.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy called on art-

ists and influential figures to reduce their overseas tours and increase domestic tours.

“This is important because people, particularly youngsters, tend to follow what artists do,” Tourism Promotion Director of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy Tazbir said here on Tuesday.

He added that many domestic tourism destinations were far more exciting than foreign destinations but still remained unknown to the public.

The role of public figures, particularly artists, in popularizing the country’s still hidden destinations is essential.

“We always try our best to introduce domestic tourism destinations on a national level. Our mission is to mobilize domestic tourists and to prevent them from taking too many trips overseas,” he claimed.

The ministry also promoted cultural activities, including conducting different festivals in various regions, which so far has attracted tourists.

This year, the ministry has set itself a target of achieving 252 million do-mestic trips.

“For this, we have allotted a budget of Rp30 billion for the promotion of do-mestic tourism, including efforts to increase domestic tourist trips,” he stated.

The number of domestic tourist trips has increased from 202.7 million in 2004 to 245.2 million in 2012.

The announcement came on Po-ernomo’s 67th birthday and his last day as chief of the Supreme Audit Agency. He retired Monday after leading the agency since 2009. Sa-mad said Poernomo approved mea-sures requested by Bank Central Asia, Indonesia’s largest private bank, allowing it to avoid a total of $498 million in taxes.

He said Poernomo will be charged with abusing authority by enriching himself or other parties, and faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

KPK and the Indonesian Im-migration office, on Tuesday, have banned former Chief of Su-preme Audit Agency (BPK) Hadi Purnomo from traveling abroad following his alleged corruption in BCA bank in 1999.

“Hadi Poernomo cannot leave the country as of today for six months,” spokesman to immigra-tion office Heryanto confirmed.

On April 21, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named former chairman of the Supreme Audit Board (BPK) Hadi Poernomo, a corruption suspect.

Hadi was charged with abuse of power when he was Taxation Director General in 2002-2004, causing a loss of around Rp375 billion to the state.

Hadi was named suspect on his 67th birthday, on Monday, when he retired as civil servant from his last position as BPK chairman.

Hadi favored Bank Central Asia (BCA) by accepting the bank’s objection to corporate tax in the 1999-2003 period, resulting

in a loss to state revenue, KPK chairman Abraham Samad clari-fied on Monday.

On July 17, 2003, BCA had sent a letter to the Income Tax Directorate (PPH) stating its ob-jection to the imposition of tax on its non-performing loan of Rp5.7 trillion.

The PPH Director recommend-ed a rejection of the BCA’s objec-tion, but Hadi Poernomo passed an order to the PPH Director to change his recommendation in favor of BCA on July 18, 2004.

Hadi Poernomo then issued a decision freeing BCA of tax obli-gation on its NPL.

“The state should have received at least Rp375 billion in tax rev-enues,” Deputy Chairman of KPK Bambang Widjojanto asserted.

JAKARTA - Jakarta called on governments Monday to stop “shifting responsibility” for asylum-seekers, in veiled criticism of Australia’s hardline policy of towing boatloads of would-be refugees back to Indonesia.

The military-led operation has caused anger in Indonesia, which has been forced to take back seven boatloads of asylum-seekers turned around by the Australian navy since December.

At the opening of an international meeting on asylum-seekers in Jakarta, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said countries should stand by commitments to cooperate on the issue made at a conference last year.

Those commitments “confirmed our shared responsibility -- shared respon-sibility, not (the) shifting of responsibility. Shared responsibility that requires coordination and cooperation,” Natalegawa said at Monday’s meeting.

“For Indonesia the message is crystal-clear -- the cross-border and complex nature of irregular movement of persons defies... national solution.”

Asylum-seekers have for years used Indonesia as a transit point to cross to Australia, usually on rickety fishing boats. More than 1,000 asylum-seekers have died at sea in recent years attempting the perilous journey.

Tony Abbott came to power last year at the head of a conservative govern-ment in Australia on the back of a pledge to stem the flow of asylum-seekers, and has implemented the tough border protection policies.

His government says they are working, claiming that no asylum-seekers arriving by boat have set foot on Australian soil since December.

The UN refugee agency said last week the number of asylum-seekers reg-istering in Indonesia had dropped dramatically since December, from around 100 a day to 100 a week.

The Abbott administration retained the policy of the former government of sending all asylum-seekers arriving by boat to Papua New Guinea or Nauru -- for permanent resettlement there if judged to be refugees.

Natalegawa acknowledged Monday the policies may have helped reduce the loss of life at sea between the two countries, but reiterated his opposition to them.

“We need to take the politics out of this whole endeavour,” he said, adding there must be alternative ways of stopping the flow of asylum-seekers.

Australia was represented at the meeting by officials from its Jakarta embassy, but they made no comment at the opening.

The two-day International Workshop on the Protection of the Irregular Movement of Persons at Sea, attended by senior officials from 14 countries, is co-chaired by Indonesia and the United Nations refugee agency.

JAKARTA — Anti-graft officials said Monday the former chief of Indonesia’s state audit agency is a suspect in a multimillion-dollar corruption case. The head of the Corruption Eradication Com-mission, Abraham Samad, said Hadi Poernomo allegedly abused his authority, resulting in a $32.7 million loss to the state while serving as director general of taxation between 2002 and 2004.

Indonesia speaks out on boatpeople amid Australia tension

Artists called on to make more domestic tripsDozens of police officers in

neon green jackets formed a cor-don around the dock as the bodies arrived Tuesday. Since divers found a way over the weekend to enter the submerged ferry, the death count has shot up. Officials said Tuesday that confirmed fatali-ties had reached 104, with nearly 200 people still missing.

If a body lacks identification, details such as height, hair length and clothing are posted on a white signboard for families waiting on Jindo island for news. The bodies are then driven in ambulances to two tents: one for men and boys, the other for women and girls. Families listen quietly outside as an official briefs them, then line up and file in. Only relatives are allowed inside.

For a brief moment there is silence. Then the anguished cries, the wailing, the howling. They

have not known for nearly a week whether they should grieve or not, and now they sound like they’re being torn apart. “How do I live without you? How will your mother live without you?” a woman cries out.

She is with a woman who emerg-es from a tent crying and falls into a chair where relatives try to comfort her. One stands above her and cradles her head in her hands, stroking her face. “Bring back my daughter!” the woman cries, call-ing out her child’s name in agony. A man rushes over, lifts her on his back and carries her away.

This heartbreak awaits many families of those still missing from the submerged ferry Sewol, or at least those whose relatives’ bodies are ultimately recovered. Families who once dreamed of miraculous rescues now simply hope their loved ones’ remains are recovered

soon, before the ocean does much more damage.

“At first, I was just very sad, but now it’s like an endless wait,” said Woo Dong-suk, a construction worker and uncle of one of the stu-dents. “It’s been too long already. The bodies must be decayed. The parents’ only wish right now is to find the bodies before they are badly decomposed.”

About 250 of the more than 300 missing or dead are students from a single high school, in Ansan near Seoul, who were on their way to the southern tourist island of Jeju.

The captain, Lee Joon-seok, and two crew members have been arrested on suspicion of negli-gence and abandoning people in need. Prosecutors detained six other crew members — four on Monday and two on Tuesday — but have yet to obtain arrest warrants for them.

SYDNEY — An air search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet was suspended for a day due to stormy weather on Tuesday as the painstakingly slow sonar scanning of a targeted patch of seabed continued. Up to 10 planes were to scour the ocean surface for debris on Tuesday over an area covering 49,500 square kilometers (19,000 square miles) centered 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) northwest of the Australian west coast city of Perth, the search coordination center said in a statement.

But the center later said the planes would be grounded due to poor weather related to a tropical cyclone developing north of the search area. “It has been determined that the current weather conditions are resulting in heavy seas and poor visibility, and would make any air search activities ineffective and potentially hazardous,” the center said in a statement.

Ten ships were searching the ocean surface on Tuesday, while a robotic submarine was finishing its ninth mission scanning the silt-covered seafloor since the search for wreckage shifted beneath the waves on April 14.

The center said the U.S. Navy’s Bluefin 21 had so far covered more than 80 percent of the 310-square-kilometer (120-square-mile) seabed search zone, creating a three-dimensional sonar map of the ocean floor. Nothing of interest had been found.

The 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) deep search area is a circle 20 ki-lometers (12 miles) wide around an area where equipment picked up a signal on April 8 consistent with a plane’s black boxes. The plane’s flight data and cockpit recorders’ beacons were only designed to transmit signals for 30 days after a crash and their batteries are now presumed to be dead. The search coordination center said the sonar scan of the seafloor in that area was expected to be completed sometime this week.

BAGHDAD — A senior Iraqi police officer says militants at-tacked a balloting center in a remote area in the country’s north and killed 10 guards.

It was the latest in a surge in militant attacks in the run-up to Iraq’s crucial parliament elections on April 30.

Deputy police chief in the northern city of Kirkuk says the at-tack occurred late on Monday night in Daqouq village.

Maj. Gen. Torhan Abdul-Rahman Youssef says the gunmen were disguised in military uniforms and told the guards at the polling center that they were there to do a search. Youssef says the militants later shot to death the 10 guards.

Daqouq is located about 260 kilometers (162 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad.

He said though the abrasion occurred naturally, there was also abra-sion that had been caused by human activities. “Human activities, for instance, such as the taking of beach sand will decrease the protection area,” he said.

Suyarto explained the mitigation of the abrasion could vary de-pending on the condition of the beach. However, the mitigation with revetment or sea wall and tripods were considered pretty good. Then, Suyarto also advised to begin addressing the abrasion by sand backfill-ing that functioned as protection area. (kmb32)

Mike Conley added 19 points and 12 assists for Memphis. Kevin Durant had 36 points and 11 re-bounds for the Thunder. Russell Westbrook scored 29 points for Oklahoma City, but he made just 11 of 28 shots.

Randolph’s layup with 26 seconds left in overtime put the Grizzlies up by two. Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka traveled, giving the ball back to the Grizzlies. Courtney Lee made two free throws for Memphis to make it a four-point game. Durant missed a 3-pointer and Randolph made two free throws with nine sec-onds left to put the game out of reach.

Game 3 is Thursday night in Memphis. Los An-geles power forward Blake Griffin scored a career playoff-high 35 points without a foul for the Clippers, while Chris Paul added 12 points and 10 assists.

Los Angeles started the game on a 14-4 run and kept on going, maintaining a sizeable double-digit lead through the final three quarters. They finished with a franchise record points for a playoff game. All the foul trouble that plagued Griffin and Paul in the Clippers’ four-point loss in Game 1 belonged to the Warriors this time.

Stephen Curry scored 20 of his 24 points in the third quarter, when the Warriors never got closer than 25 points, while playing with four fouls. Klay Thompson finished with seven points — 15 under his average — and four fouls.

SHANGHAI — Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso said his struggling team is “still in the fight” after he finally got on the podium for the first time this season, finishing third at the Chinese Grand Prix. It’s been a slow start to the season for Ferrari, which has not adapted as quickly as runaway leaders Mercedes to the new fuel-efficient six-cylinder engines introduced to the sport this year.

At the Bahrain GP two weeks ago, Alonso and teammate Kimi Raikkonen could manage no better than ninth- and 10th-place finishes, respectively. Days later, the team parted ways with principal Stefano Domenicali after six years. But Ferrari has made improvements on the car since then, giving at least Alonso a boost in Shanghai under the watch of new team principal Marco Mattiacci.

“We felt more competitive and now in the race being here on the podium is some kind of surprise for us, a nice surprise, finally,” he said. “We didn’t have the start of the season that we would like but at the end of the day, we’re still in the fight.”

Alonso, who was the defending Chinese

GP champion, said he’s reaching the same comfort level in the car that he had in 2012 when he finished just three points behind Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship.

He managed to keep pace with the Mer-cedes cars in practice on Friday, and though he didn’t get close to passing winner Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s race, he stayed close to second-place Nico Rosberg until the end. “In Bahrain, we were one minute behind the leaders, ninth and 10th, and today we are on the podium, seven seconds behind Nico,” he said. “Hopefully I can keep going like this. I felt more comfortable with the car and we will not give up.”

Alonso may have fared better in Shang-hai, but his teammate Raikkonen continued to struggle. The Finn failed to make it into the top 10 in qualifying, starting 11th on the grid, and only moved up three spots to eighth by the finish.

“Hopefully we found some reason or at least some cure for it, to fix it, whatever it is. In the race, (the car) just was slow,” he said. “Obviously there’s a lot of work to do. We haven’t had any single race that we’ve been happy with the team the whole time.”

OKLAHOMA CITY — Zach Randolph scored 25 points to help the Memphis Grizzlies defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-105 in overtime to level their first-round playoff series at one game each. The 50-year-old Scot was re-moved from his post by vice-chairman Ed Woodward during a meeting at United’s training ground in the morning. There was no initial announcement about who would replace Moyes, although British media was reporting that Ryan Giggs, a club great who was on

Moyes’ coaching staff, would take charge on a temporary basis. Dutch coach Louis van Gaal and Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp have been linked strongly with the vacancy.

Moyes’ position has been in doubt since Sunday, when United lost 2-0 to Everton in the Premier

League to ensure England’s biggest club over the last two decades will miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 19 years. It also left United seventh in the league, a season after winning its 20th championship by 11 points, and on course for its lowest league finish since 1990.

Moyes was hand-picked as United manager by Ferguson, who ended his 27-year reign at the end of last season after winning the league for his 38th major trophy. He signed a six-year deal at a club famed for preaching the values of stability. But Moyes has been unable to continue the success of Ferguson, with the team’s domestic form woeful by its high standards.

United is 23 points behind leader Liverpool, 13 adrift of the Cham-pions League places, and has slumped to a string of humiliating losses including to fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City at

home. United has been defeated a club record 11 times in the league and 10 times in 22 matches in all competitions in 2014.

“There is no disguising that the football this season has been poor, the results have been poor,” said former United defender Gary Neville, whose younger brother Phil was an assistant manager to Moyes. “The performanc-es have got worse and worse.”

The only highlight in Moyes’ tenure was guiding United to the Champions League quarterfinals, where it lost to Bayern Munich, in his first full season of European football.

MADRID - The last thing Real Madrid wanted was another Cham-pions League semi-final clash against Bayern Munich and on Wednesday they will need to get the better of a familiar foe who very much appears to have their number. Pep Guardiola, whose Bayern side play their last four, first leg at the Bernabeu, was appointed as coach of the German champions at the end of last season after taking a year out to recover from a trophy-laden but draining four years in charge of Real’s arch-rivals Barcelona.

During his time as a Barca player and coach, Guardiola seldom tasted defeat against the Madrid club and his all-conquering team dispatched Real in the last four of Europe’s elite club competition in 2010-11 before going on to win the final against Manchester United. His coaching record against Real was an impressive nine wins, four draws and two defeats, while as a player in 14 La Liga meetings he won six, drew five and lost only three.

Despite having the statistics firmly on his side, Guardiola is too wily to take Real lightly and he will know how desperate the Spaniards are to win the record-extending 10th European crown they have been chasing since their last continental triumph in 2002. They will also be

itching to avenge their last-four reverse to Bayern in the 2011-12 season, when the German side went through on penalties after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate but lost to Chelsea in the final.

“Every time I have gone to the Bernabeu, as a player and as a coach, I have never in my head gone there as the favourite,” Guardiola was quoted as saying in Spanish sports daily Marca on Saturday. “I have too much respect for them,” added the 43-year-old, whose Bayern side have already wrapped up another Bundesliga title and are still in with a chance of repeating last season’s treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.

“Madrid deserve a lot of respect for all their history. They are always a strong team whoever is the coach because they have a lot behind them: great players, fans and a great history.”

CERTAIN ADVANTAGE

Guardiola conceded that his players had gone off the boil in the Bundesliga since winning the title last month. Real, fresh from beat-ing Barca in Wednesday’s King’s Cup final and still in the fight for La Liga, may have something of an edge, he added. “Yes Madrid have a certain advantage in that respect,”

Guardiola, whose side have lost twice and drawn once in four out-ings since securing the Bundesliga, told Marca.

“We won the league much earlier and that meant our rhythm dropped a little but we will try to get back to our level as soon as possible. “But that’s a normal thing because we were playing league games with nothing at stake. “Madrid’s enthu-siasm will be greater than ours right now after winning the Cup final but we will try to be competitive at the Bernabeu.”

Guardiola’s Real counterpart Carlo Ancelotti, in his first season in charge, is waiting on the fitness of top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has missed the last four matches due to knee and muscle problems in his left leg.

The Portugal captain, the leading marksman also in La Liga this term, has been training hard this week, suggesting he should be able to play a part on Wednesday.

“I always believe that the great players, however small the chance they have, will play on these occa-sions,” Guardiola said. “What can I say about Cristiano? He has been at that level for many years, but not just him. He is very strong but without him Madrid are also a team.” The return leg is in Munich next week and the winners of the tie will play Atletico Madrid or Chelsea in the final in Lisbon on May 24.

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City stayed alive in the English Premier League title race by beating West Bromwich Albion 3-1 thanks to first-half goals by three Argentines on Monday. Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero struck in the opening 10 minutes at Etihad Stadium to set third-place City on its way to a victory that trimmed the gap to league leader Liverpool to six points, with a game still in hand.

Graham Dorrans’ spectacular 16th-minute volley halved West Brom’s deficit but Martin Demi-chelis bundled in a close-range finish in the 33rd to help secure a routine win for City that was marred by a second-half injury to its playmaker David Silva. The Spain international was carried off on a stretcher after receiving a knock to his right ankle, which has been causing him pain for the last few weeks.

City, which moved a point behind Chelsea, likely has to win its final four matches if the team has any chance of reeling in Liverpool. “We always talk with the players that

if Liverpool win their (last) three matches and win 14 in a row, they will be champions,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “Our duty is to try to win the games and in that way Liverpool can feel pressure.”

Pellegrini’s side rediscovered the creativity and bite to its forward play that was lacking in last week’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland that severely dented its hopes of catch-ing Liverpool. Much of that can be put down to the return of Silva, who prompted many of City’s attacks in the opening blitz that proved too much for West Brom, before being taken off in the 69th with his right leg in a brace fol-lowing an innocuous challenge by Morgan Amalfitano.

“His injury started with a kick some weeks ago and every week he plays in the last game with pain,” Pellegrini said of Silva. With City facing upcom-ing trips to Crystal Palace and Everton, a long injury absence for Silva would be a huge blow to the team’s title aspirations. By the time he departed, the damage had been done by City’s three

a rebound inside three minutes after Aguero’s shot was palmed out by West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster, and Aguero buried a low shot into the corner from 25 meters in the 10th for his first goal since Jan. 29. Like against Sunderland, the striker lasted only around an hour as he looks to return to full fitness after a hamstring injury.

Dorrans finished off a fast coun-terattack, which had its origins in a botched free kick by City close to West Brom’s area, by twisting and turning Gael Clichy and letting fly with a fierce volley that crashed into the net off the post.

However, Demichelis restored the two-goal lead after receiving the end of Vincent Kompany’s flick-on from Samir Nasri’s corner and West Brom rarely threatened in the second half. “The first half I think we played very well, we scored three goals and we had clear chances,” Pellegrini said. “It was the team we see the whole season at the Etihad.”

MANCHESTER, England — David Moyes was fired as Manchester United manager on Tuesday, paying the price for the club’s spectacular and sudden decline in his 10 months in charge since replacing Alex Ferguson. United released a brief statement on its website, saying Moyes has left the club and that it “would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.”

(kmb32)

(kmb16)

SINGARAJA - Watershed (DAS) in the town of Singaraja seems very difficult to be freed of contamination due to river debris after heavy rain and behavior of residents deliberately throwing rubbish into the river. This condition makes the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) do special handling for combating the garbage siege along the urban watershed.

“It seems better, but it looks worse because it continues to take place. So, the conse-quences are currently seen more severe on all the beaches in Bali,” said Suyarto.

According to him, some of the beaches that were previously safe from abrasion were then hazardous. Primarily, it happened to a number of beaches in Jembrana.

“There are also areas that begin to go through breakdown. For instance, the areas

that have not been subject to abrasion previ-ously in Jembrana have started to hit by the abrasion,” he continued.

Suyarto added the abrasion generally oc-curred at the points where the land was the most unstable or had minimal coastal pro-tection area. This PPLH researcher from the Udayana University mentioned that the points lay along the Tabanan to Gilimanuk region.

“The beaches along the region of Tabanan

to Gilimanuk almost have no protection area. Their beach sand is thin. For example, the protection area is also minimal so they are mostly affected. Meanwhile, in the east coast the beaches are protected by a lot of sand, so the abrasion is not too severe. Theoretically, the abrasion is like accumulation. When an area is hit by abrasion, it will continue to be hit,” he explained.
