“The impact will be negative for Bali,” said Coordinator of the Working Secretariat for Environ-mental Conservation (SKPPLH) Bali, I Made Mangku, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jul 3).

He said the impact would take place for ten years. In other words, the abrasion would reach a satura-

tion point after ten years because the characteristic of most beaches in Bali was unstable or second-ary. “For instance, reclamation on Serangan Island has harmed Sanur Beach, and crib was then built along the Sanur Beach; later on it will harm the beach in Gianyar, and so on. And this will also happen when

the reclamation at Tanjung Benoa occurs,” said Mangku.

Made Mangku said the reclama-tion at Tanjung Benoa also needed to be assessed in terms of the carrying capacity of the overloaded South-ern Bali. Limited carrying capacity should get a concern from the inves-tor because if it was ignored, then

the people of Bali would be affected. Aside from absorbing only a few local employments, it would also draw the urbanites and dense population growth would occur in Southern Bali.

In terms of the environmental point of view, any changes in the landscape at one point would have a negative impact elsewhere. The reason to stem tsunami accord-ing to the initiator was actually just a disguise. The problem was that the reclamation at Tanjung Benoa would even endanger Bali in general because the secondary nature of beaches in Bali was then converted into a primary nature, so that its negative impact would

occur on the other beach. In other words, it would kindle a disaster elsewhere.

“Continuation of this develop-ment highly depends on the com-mitment of the leaders of Bali in the executive and legislative whether they can reject the plan of investor or even go hand in hand with the interests of the investor,” he said.

Cariole Still Survives amidst Conges-tion of DenpasarTraditional means of transportation such as cariole has become a favorite in the 1960s. In harmony with the passage of time, the presence of cariole is increasingly marginalized by modern means of transportation such as motorcycles and cars. Now, the number of cariole remaining to operate around Denpasar is few and far between. Ac-cording to a cariole driver met around the Badung Market, Nengah Purna, the number of surviving cariole was only about 10-15 units. Such number spread out in several places in the Badung Market. Like in the east of the temple, the place was only used by three cariole drivers to hang out.

Purna has deeply involved in such profession since 1963. “I have been here since I was a teenager. When the Mount Agung erupted, I have been a cariole driver,” said the 70-year old grandfather.

He said that before the flooding means of transportation like motorcycles, the cariole was highly required to convey and escort passengers bringing along their groceries from the market. From the results of his livelihood, he was able to support his wife and three children and sent them school and college. However, his earning as a ca-riole driver today was not much. Though visitors to the market were crowded ahead of Galungan, he said, they had no great impact on his earning. “From eleventh o’clock just now until this time, I have not got passengers at all,” he said.

Within a day, he was only able to earn IDR 10,000 to IDR 30,000. “Except for transporting guests (foreign visitors) and on Sunday, I can earn more,” he said. However, Nengah Purna would like to maintain his profession. This grandpa from Ulakan, Karangasem, started his activity as a cariole driver from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Jro Nik, one of the residents having a land around the Lake Batur, said the flooding lake water ashore reached 50 meters. “The overflowing lake water has not subsided. Even, due to the heavy rains yesterday, the overflowing water is increas-ingly widespread,” he said, Wednesday (Jul 3). Previously, for watering the plantation, farmers needed two rolls of water hose, but then they only needed a roll.

Another farmer claimed that

since the heavy rains falling recently, the water of Lake Batur had been rising up to 10 cm in a day. Such condition made people having the land around the lake-side worry because the lake water inundated their land entirely.

Currently, most plantation areas of farmers around the Lake Batur were flooded so that they could not be cultivated. Such conditions, according to resi-dents, rarely happened. Even, the cycle was almost every 15 years. “Such overflowing lake water

rarely happened. In the past, such occurrence really happened and it even caused some electric poles to be uprooted,” said the farmer. Additionally, the overflowing water on the Lake Batur also triggered a lot of water hyacinth to grow along the lake.

The condit ion was also recognized by the headman of Buahan, Made Antara. He said the overflowing water of Lake Batur since four months ago was triggered by high rainfall lately. (ina)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Criminal Detective personnel of

South Denpasar Police led by its Unit Chief I Gusti Ngurah Yudhisthira man-aged to reveal the windshield shattering case that had been troubling the people of Denpasar and surrounding areas. After several days of investigation, police ar-rested one of the alleged perpetrators of the windshield shattering named Nur-pakih aka Ambon.

Arrest of the perpetrator took place at his boarding house on Jalan Raya Ses-etan, Gang Pakuk Sari, South Denpasar, Tuesday (Jul 2) at 8:00 p.m. The perpetra-tor had been undergoing examination in the room of investigators to develop the case. “Indeed, there is an arrest. When it has been complete, we will release the case,” said Unit Chief Yudhisthira, Wednesday (Jul 3).

He admitted that he could not provide more information yet related to the dis-closure of the case because it was still being developed. Moreover, the wind-shield shattering case frequently occurred recently. “Please wait first. We are still examining the perpetrator. Hopefully, it can be developed,” he said.

Information at police station men-tioned the reveal of the case was to follow up the report of a resident claiming if the vehicle’s windshield had been shat-tered. Most recently, a Hindu high priest

(pedanda) was reported to become such a victim a few days ago. The incident took place in the jurisdiction of East Denpasar Police, precisely on Jalan Noja, Denpasar. The victim claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 1.5 million.

Well, based on the report, the Den-pasar Metro Police and Bali Police immediately mobilized their criminal detective personnel to uncover the case. Investigation was also made by the mobile detective unit (buser). In the course of the investigation, the officers received information that Nurpakih was back to Bali.

Nurpakih was said to have become a police target operation. He was sus-pected of becoming the perpetrator of the windshield shattering. Based on the results of tracking by police, the ad-dress of the perpetrator could be found (Jalan Raya Sesetan Gang Pakuk Sari, South Denpasar—Ed). Having been investigated, police could never find the perpetrator in his boarding house.

Nevertheless, the police never sur-rendered. They were always lurking in his boarding house. Fortunately, police got their luck on Tuesday night. They saw him passing at the lane and imme-diately made an ambush. Without giving resistance, the suspect could be arrested and taken to the South Denpasar Police station. (kmb21)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—The Land Transportation Organization (Organda) Bali has not

stipulated the taxi fare increase after the announcement of the subsidized fuel price hike. This organization has just set the tariff increase of the provincial urban transportation (AKDP) as much as 20 percent.

“Taxi fare will be discussed next week. However, the taxi fare increase will remain in the range of the tariff adjustment of the other land transport mode,” said Chairman of the Organda Bali, Ketut Edy Dharma Putra, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jul 3).

According to him, the increase in the taxi fare was also adjusted to the purchasing power and the public interest aside from avoid-ing the flush among the public transport entrepreneurs. “After July 5, we will meet with taxi operators to discuss about the fare adjustment,” he said.

The lack of certainty related to the taxi fare increase was also recognized by General Manager (GM) of Blue Bird Group Bali, I Putu Gede Panca Wiadnyana. So far, the taxi fare had not been adjusted since there was no decision from the government and the Organda.

“We still impose the old fares because there is no fare adjust-ment yet. We remain to comply with the decision of government and Organda in the matter of the fare determination. It entirely poses the authority of the government and Organda,” he said.

He said the subsidized fuel price hike like Premium gasoline by 45 percent from IDR 4,500 to IDR 6,500 definitely increased the operating cost. With the rising cost of fuel at such amount, his party admitted to have to make efficiency.

“Based on our calculation, the monthly increase reached ap-proximately IDR 400-500 million. The increase reaches nearly half a billion in a month. To that end, we must make efficiency in order our overhead cost does not increase,” he said.

As had been known, the Land Transportation Organization had just stipulated the tariff hike of AKDP by 20 percent and the urban public transport tariff by 17 percent. Previously, the Or-ganda Denpasar proposed the tariff adjustment up to 33 percent to offset the subsidized fuel price hike. The 17-percent increase was considered to have met the sense of fairness, either for the owners and passengers of the public transportation. Nevertheless, the increase in the public transport tariff did not apply to students. They could still enjoy the tariff at IDR 2,000 per person. Right now, the number of public transport only remained in the range of 500 to 700 units. Such number had decreased sharply compared to the year 2010 reaching 1,300 units. (kmb27)

“The government should be open to the public related to the investors wishing to reclaim the sea because it is completely risky,” said Ngurah Wijaya, Wednesday (Jul 3).

He asked the government to reconsider the plan by making com-prehensive study and considering the existence of mangrove forests and thinking longer in relation to the impacts on the environment.

“The Environmental Impact As-sessment (Amdal) and permission should be clear as well it must be opened to the public, so that nothing is covered up. Besides, it should not meet the desire of investors. If the thorough study does not comply with all the aspects specified, well ... it must be canceled and never be resumed,” he said.

He said the development of tour-ism in Bali needed to be balanced between the Southern and Northern, Western and Eastern Bali. On that account, there should be political

will from the government to set up a new investment in the tourism sector in order to be placed outside the areas of Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar.

“Any development of accommo-dation in Southern Bali, especially in Badung, should be studied be-cause the supply and demand is not appropriate. The government has imposed a moratorium, but many parties violate it by outsmarting the rules,” he said.

The effort to outsmart was vis-ible from the total growth in the number of hotel rooms. In 2009, the total hotel room in Bali reached 46,000 and within the past two years it had been increasing up to 16,000 so that the total room reached 62,000 in 2011. By region, the Badung County occupied the highest position namely 77 percent, Denpasar (15 percent) and Gianyar (3 percent). In 2011, the percentage of hotels in Badung decreased to 74

percent, while Denpasar showed an increase of 18 percent and the remaining belonged to Gianyar County.

Meanwhile, in terms of the growth of non-star hotel room in 2009, Badung had 41 percent, Den-pasar (18 percent) and Gianyar (17 percent), but in 2011, a tremendous surge occurred in Badung County to 54 percent, while Denpasar dropped to 12 percent. The number of star hotel and non-star hotel in 2000 was nearly balanced, but it suddenly showed a surge where the non-star hotel reached much higher number than the star hotels.

“It happened because the mora-torium was only applied to the star hotel. To that end, I recommend the rules should not include the hotel category, but it’s enough to mention the moratorium of hotel accom-modation, whether they fall into star hotel, boutique hotel or villa category,” he said. GARUDA Wisnu Kencana StatueDesigned and built by Nyoman Nuarta, one of Indonesia’s foremost modern sculptor, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue or GWK and its pedestal building will be standing 150 meters tall with its wings span 64 meters across. Made from more than 4000 tons of copper and brass, the statue is picturing Lord Wisnu, as the source of wisdom, riding on the back of the mythical bird Garuda as the manifestation of conscience toward Amerta, the perennial goodness.

The statue and its pedestal will be surrounded by more than 240 hectares cultural park which was once an abandoned and unproductive limestone quarry. The cultural park will provide attractions for both lo-cal and foreign visitors with supporting facilities such as Lotus Pond, Festival Park, Amphitheater, Street Theater, Exhibition Hall, as well as Jendela Bali The Panoramic Resto and souvenir shop. At present time, the statue of Wisnu, the statue of Garuda, and the hands of Wisnu have been placed temporarily in three different plazas within the park.GWK Cultural Park is intended to educate, especially the young generations about the importance of preserving and cultivating world’s cultural heritage.

The Statue of WisnuAs the anchor point of GWK, the 20 meter tall

copper statue of the Lord Wisnu has been placed temporarily on the highest hill of Ungasan where visitors can enjoy sunset or sunrise over the mag-nificent view of Kuta, Benoa and Sanur. The statue of Wisnu is an illustration of the Almighty God in maintaining and caring all life and its being. The colossal limestone pillars and monumental Garuda statue make Lotus Pond a very exotic space. With its room capacity that can accommodate up to 7000 people, Lotus Pond has gained good reputation as the perfect place to hold big and international events.

The Statue of Wisnu’s HandsThe statue of Wisnu’s hands was added to GWK

Cultural Park in 2007. It’s one step closer to finishing the complete Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue. This piece was placed temporarily on Tirta Agung area.

According to the Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, minimal re-quirement of a rabies-free area in the span of two years was the absence of rabies death case to human. If such condition also happened to the rabies carrier animal (HPR) such as dog, the administration of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) or anti-rabies serum (SAR) was no longer required.

To achieve such condition, according to Suarjaya, the vaccination measure to rabies carrier animals should be done continuously. Health counseling related to precautions against rabies in the com-

munity should not be interrupted. Com-munity had to remain vigilant because though there was no longer death case of rabies in human for 15 months, it did not necessarily mean if the rabies did not threaten again.

To that end, expected Suarjaya, people should avoid dog bites and vaccinated their dog and did not let their dog roam around the streets. Meanwhile, to deal with rabies infection case in human bitten by dogs, the Bali Health Agency provided the anti-rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum.

Based on the recent data, the anti-

rabies vaccine stock consisted of 29,191 vials and anti-rabies serum stock totally came to 326 vials. The amount of anti-rabies vaccine had been dispersed to each hospital such as Sanglah Hospital (350 vials), Denpasar (4,000 vials), Badung (4,750 vials), Tabanan (530 vials), Gi-anyar (5,296 vials), Karangasem (330 vials), Klungkung (5,135 vials), Bangli (300 vials), Jembrana (2100 vials) and Buleleng (1,870 vials). “As planned, central government will also help by providing 5,000 vials,” said Suarjaya.

Anti-rabies vaccine stock was cur-rently estimated to meet the needs of the community until September. To that end, the use of anti-rabies vaccine was expect-ed to be more effective and efficient. “To be more effective and efficient, the use of anti-rabies vaccine should be applied selectively,” said Suarjaya.(san)

The number of labor inspector in Indonesia is only a few. Min-istry of Manpower and Resettle-ment recorded the professional just amounted to 2,600 until 2013. Even, Bali only had 4 personnel of working safety inspector.

“The level of county/municipality remains to lack of labor inspectors, like Bali only has 4 labor inspectors. To that end, the government hopes the fund for improving the quality and personnel can also be allocated

from the regional budget,” said Minister of Manpower and Resettle-ment, Muhaimin Iskandar, in Kuta, Wednesday (Jul 3).

Aside from lacking of labor inspectors, said Muhaimin, only a few companies in Indonesia had implemented the standardization of labor inspection. Therefore, it would become a focus of the gov-ernment in relatively short time.

“The government will also in-crease the supervisory personnel of working safety into 3,500 personnel in 2014 from the existing profes-

sionals this year, namely 2,600,” he explained.

He said the government finalized the standards of the labor inspection by ratifying a number of interna-tional agreements along with the addition of supervisory personnel in the county / municipality level to 3,500 personnel by 2014. A number of agreements ranging from the ASEAN level to the International Labour Organization (ILO) began to be adopted to make standardiza-tion for labor inspection in Indone-sia. “Today, a lot of labor control

components need to be improved,” he said.

Muhaimin admitted that cur-rently based on the Government Regulation No. 38/2007 on the coordination of the Central Gov-ernment, Provincial and County/Municipality, so that the Labor Development and Inspection had been submitted by the President to the Governor and Regent/Mayor.

Director General of Labor De-velopment of Supervision, the Ministry of Manpower and Reset-tlement, Muji Handaya, added that

in 2013 it had been implemented the education and training for labor inspectors for 8 generations.

“A total of 7 generations were financed by the State Budget (APBN), while another genera-tion was financed by Regional Budget (APBD). In the previous generation, it has been carried out the socialization on the develop-ment of effective and modern labor inspection for 3 generations in the territory of Western, Central and Eastern Indonesia,” he affirmed. OVERFLOWING water of Lake Tam-blingan at Munduk Village, Banjar Sub-district, Buleleng, reminds us of the many temples surrounding the sacred lake. One of the temples also submerged in the disaster is the Gubug or Pegubugan Temple located on the west side of Lake Tamblingan

Indeed, the Gubug Temple is inseparable from the issues of water, either the tangible water or transcendental water. In the tem-ple, thousands of farmers in Tabanan and Buleleng Regency rely on their invocation in order their rice fields can persistently be irrigated and be fertile all the times so that they can have a great harvest.

Supporting devotees of the temple are those belong to Catur Desa consisting of the Munduk, Gobleg, Umajero and Ges-ing Customary Village. They believe if the Gubug Temple is the central temple of dozens of temples located on the shores of Lake Tamblingan. Those temples are the Tajun, Ulun Danu, Endek, Bukit Temple and a number of bebaturan temples (men-hir) such as the Pengukiran, Pengukusan, Mbang, Sang Hyang Kangin, Sang Hyang Kauh and the Naga Loka Temple. All of the temples are located around the Lake Tam-blingan, precisely on the slopes of the hill or right at the edge of the lake. Meanwhile, if connected to Batur Temple in Bangli, the Gubug Temple is also considered to be the purusha (cosmic man) while Batur is the pradhana (cosmic woman).

Gubug Temple is the easiest to be found

because of its location at the edge of the lake near the Munduk Customary Village. This temple is quite unique because it has two dif-ferent Meru shrines. One of the Meru shrines

was built and worshipped by subak members from Tabanan Regency, while another was built and venerated by devotees belonging to Catur Desa. “Its history is unknown why

two Meru shrines were built within the same temple area,” said the Chief of Munduk Cus-tomary Village, Nengah Ika.

According to Nengah Ika, there were 63 subak organizations in Tabanan worship-ping the Gubug Temple that regularly organized pakelem (animal sacrifice) ritual in the temple and Lake Tamblingan. Based on the oral information from the ancestors, the farmers in Tabanan considered the Lake Tamblingan the water vessel of Tabanan or headspring of Tabanan farmers. On that account, on the pujawali or temple anni-versary of the Gubug, residents of Tabanan Regency supported by Tabanan Govern-ment always teamed up with residents of Catur Desa to organize the ritual.

Since it is the central to temple located around the Lake Tamblingan, pujawali of the temple is carried out in marathon way. It falls on dark moon of the first month in Ba-linese calendar (around June-July). Mean-while, on full moon of the second month the devotees organize melasti procession to Penaung River. Then, on full moon of the third month they organize a ritual at Raganta and culmination of the ceremony falls on full moon of the fourth month in the temples located on the shores of Lake Tamblingan centered in the Gubug Temple. Afterward, on the next dark moon devotees organize melasti procession to Labuan Aji Temple. Ultimately, the series of all rituals come to an end with maayu-ayu ritual on full moon in the fifth month. A legislator of the Badung House from Jimbaran, I Made Dharma, said on Wednesday (Jul 3) that his party received many complaints from the public related to the existence of the project. According to him, residents protested why the river was even backfilled. “Is it really allowed to backfill a river?” he said.

Based on information he gathered, the river backfill project had kindled public debate at Jimbaran because the project was not widely socialized to the people of Jimbaran. It gave impression if the backfill was covered up because it was only carried out by local residents. Allegedly, the project had business pur-pose as an access to the development of tourist accommodation around the river. He further explained that about three months ago the project triggered a ten-sion among the community components. Few times of meetings had been held to find out a solution, but failed. Ultimately, the backfill project was dormant and the former backfill was neglected at all.

“I urge the government to im-

mediately intervene and follow-up the issue. County government should immediately take action. Otherwise, it will become a time bomb in the com-munity,” he said.

When confirmed separately, the headman of Jimbaran, Ketut Rimbawan, acknowledged the issue related to the backfill. However, he did not want to specify what kind of issue occurred in the community. “I’ll check it first. For clarity, I will ask the subdistrict head,” he said. Meanwhile, the Subdistrict Head of South Kuta, I Wayan Puja, admitted the backfill project had been polemical in the society. He himself admitted to have mediated the issue for several times. Of the several meetings, it was decided to discontinue the project because it did not have any permit.

He said further the backfill project was aimed at making a road access to the beach. Based on information compiled, the making of road access was not for the interest of tourism investment but for local communities. (kmb25)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Backfill project located between the area of PT CTS and Ayana Hotel at Jimbaran, South Kuta, is questioned. The area backfilled is a river and carried out without socialization to the public of Jimbaran. The reports came to light amid the imbroglio over former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked details of surveillance ac-tivities by Washington. He is currently in limbo in a transit area of Moscow’s airport as the United States pressures Moscow to expel him home.

A White House statement said Obama and Merkel spoke by phone, a conversation that took place two weeks after they held face-to-face talks in Berlin. “The president assured the chancellor that the United States takes seriously the concerns of our European allies and partners,” the White House said, noting U.S. and EU officials would discuss intelligence and privacy issues as early as July 8.

The leaders agreed to hold a meet-ing of U.S. and German security of-ficials in the coming days to discuss

the issue in greater detail.German Interior Minister Hans-

Peter Friedrich said Germany would send the sub-heads of German min-istries to Washington - those below the level of deputy minister - and said they would assess the communication streams coming into Germany in a bid to protect German citizens.

Thomas Oppermann, parliamen-tary floor leader of Germany’s op-position Social Democrats, criticized Merkel’s choice of delegation, how-ever. “The Chancellor needs to hold proper government consultations,” he told German television on Thursday.

“In the next week a government delegation of sub-heads of ministries will go to Washington so basically technocrats will be talking about this topic. It’s a highly political issue.” The White House said Obama and Merkel

reiterated their strong support for the launch of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations, welcoming the soon-to-begin first round of discussions.

On Monday at a news conference in Tanzania, Obama promised to sup-ply all the information requested by European allies regarding the spying allegations, which he said Washington was still evaluating.

“Every intelligence service, not just ours, but every European intelligence service, every Asian intelligence ser-vice, wherever there’s an intelligence service, here’s one thing they’re go-ing to be doing: they’re going to be trying to understand the world better and what’s going on in world capitals around the world from sources that aren’t available through the New York Times or NBC News,” Obama said.

Reuters PRETORIA - South Africa is seeking permission

for a one-off sale of some of its $1 billion stockpile of rhino horn to finance conservation and potentially flood a thriving black market, its environment minister said on Wednesday.

However, conservation groups fear the plan could end up increasing demand in major markets such as Vietnam, where the horn is sought after for use in traditional medi-cine, as well as enriching black marketeers.

Environment Minister Edna Molewa told reporters that South Africa, home to 73 percent of the world’s rhinos, would seek permission for the sale at the next major meet-ing of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, in 2016.

“South Africa cannot continue to be held hostage by syndicates who are slaughtering our rhinos,” she said.

South Africa is home to more than 20,000 rhinos but is set this year to lose nearly 800 of them to poachers. Poaching is increasing at such a rate that by the time of the meeting, the number of rhinos being killed or dying each year will exceed the number being born.

South Africa plans to enlist other countries in the region in the sales scheme but did not mention who it expects to act as the buyer.

The biggest market for illegal rhino horn in recent years has been Vietnam, where the product is sold in pharmacies and over the Internet at about $65,000 a kg, making it more expensive than gold. At this price, South Africa’s stockpile of 16,400 kg would be worth just over $1 billion.

“We don’t believe that Vietnam satisfies any of the conditions that would be necessary to participate in legal trade of rhino horn,” said Tom Milliken, head of the rhino and elephant project for the wildlife trade monitoring network Traffic.

Rhino horn has been used for centuries in Chinese medi-cine, where it was ground into powder to treat a range of maladies including rheumatism, gout and even possession by devils.

Reuters MVEZO, South Africa - Workers armed with pick-axes and a

court order broke into the compound of Nelson Mandela’s grandson on Wednesday to exhume the remains of three of the anti-apartheid hero’s children, a new twist in a row that has split South Africa’s most famous family.

Within hours of a ruling against Mandla Mandela by the high court in Mthatha, 700 km (450 miles) south of Johannesburg, police and hearses arrived at Mandla’s complex in the nearby village of Mvezo, where the three Mandela offspring are buried.

The grey palisade gates blocking the road were forced open in front of a scrum of photographers and cameramen.

The three bodies were initially laid to rest in the family cem-etery in Qunu, the village where Mandela - now 94 years old and critically ill in hospital - spent most of his childhood.

But they were moved two years ago by Mandla to Mvezo, where he serves as the official head of the clan.

The spat over the site of the Mandela family graves has trans-fixed and appalled South Africa’s 53 million people as they con-template the reality that the father of the post-apartheid “Rainbow Nation” will not be with them forever.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama sought to allay concerns from German Chancellor Angela Merkel about reported U.S. spying on European allies on Wednesday, and they agreed to hold a high-level meeting on the subject in coming days. The European Union has demanded the United States explain a report in a German magazine that Washington was spying on its European allies, calling such surveillance shocking if true.

The number two seed showed he is physically among the toughest players on the tour as he dug deep to drag himself back into the match, but there was also a nervous vulner-ability about the way he went about securing a 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-5 win.

This was meant to be a walk in the park for Murray, who had an 8-1 winning record against the 54th-ranked Spanish claycourt specialist with limited grasscourt pedigree. It swiftly turned into an uphill struggle as Verdasco had the U.S. Open champion on the rack, firing down bullet serves and letting rip with rasping forehand winners.

The fact that Murray kept alive his hopes of becoming the first Brit-ish man to win at Wimbledon for 77 years is testament to his undoubted stamina, but he was perhaps let off the hook when a better player would have turned the screw.

Having played with freedom for the first two sets, Verdasco retreated into his shell, allowing Murray to

gain a foothold in the match.Even when Murray had levelled

at two sets each, he did not look like he had the confidence to cut loose. The second serve that seems to slow down as the tension levels rise was a soft target throughout the match.

NIP AND TUCKIn the end it came down to a

nip and tuck decider and Murray capitalised on the only break-point opportunity of the final set.

“I think when you play more and more matches and gain more expe-rience you understand how to turn matches around and how to change the momentum of games,” Murray said after coming back to win from two sets down for the seventh time in his career.

“That can be tactical; sometimes it can be your opponent. But often you need to be the one making the change. Maybe when I was younger, I could have lost that match. “But I think I’ve learnt how to come back from tough

situations more as I got older.”Murray will face 6-foot-8 Pole

Jerzy Janowicz for a place in Sun-day’s final in his fifth consecutive Wimbledon semi-final appearance.

He had reached the final of his last three grand slams, but he found himself under early pressure as Verdasco broke to take the first set after 45 minutes. That was the first set Murray had dropped all tournament but the world number two shook off the disappoint-ment to take a 3-1 lead in the second.

His tame second serve came back to haunt him, however, and he was broken in the sixth and eighth games. When Murray failed to con-vert any of the three break points he had in the ninth game, Verdasco surged to a two-set lead.

Faced with a mountain to climb, Murray lost the tightness that had marked the first two sets, breaking twice to take the third comfortably and edging a close fourth. After breaking in the 11th game of the fifth set, Murray rifled down an ace to bring up three match points and clenched his fist in relief when Verdasco sent a forehand long.

“He served extremely well, and, because of that serve he’s able to dictate points with his forehand,” Murray said. “When he’s doing that, he’s incredibly tough to beat.”

MARSEILLE, France - Mark Cavendish will never be the greatest Tour de France rider, because he will never win the race five times like Eddy Merkcx of Belgium and Frenchman Bernard Hinault. Still, the sprinter with thighs like thick hams could outdo both of those legends - by winning more stages than them at cycling’s premier race.

By Cavendish’s warp-speed standards, his 24th stage win on Wednesday was like taking candy from a baby. The teammates who led Cavendish to the finish, suck-ing him along in their wheels, building up his speed, were toiling like clockwork. Stamping on his pedals, head down, thighs pumping like pistons, Cavendish then whooshed off alone for the last 150 meters (yards), leaving everyone else in his wake.

Cavendish was carrying so much momentum and this win in Marseille, France’s second-largest city, was so comfortable that he was able to sit up in the saddle and make a hand motion like cracking a whip as he crossed the line.

One more stage win will tie Cavendish with Andre Leducq, the Frenchman who got 25 stage wins in the 1920s and 1930s, putting him third on the all-time list. Beyond Leducq is Hinault, who notched up 28 wins in the 1970s and ‘80s. Merckx’s monument is 34, won from 1969 to 1975. Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain also won five Tours, but didn’t win as many stages as Hinault and Merckx. Anquetil won 16; Indurain got 12. All seven of Lance Armstrong Tour wins were stripped from him for doping. This 100th Tour is the first since Armstrong’s fall last year.

Cavendish makes out that he isn’t fixated on Hinault

or Merckx’s numbers. He notes that for many riders, winning just one stage at the 110-year-old Tour - let alone the 11 he needs to overhaul Merckx - is a career-defining feat. “You have to show the Tour de France the respect it deserves,” he said.

But then Cavendish isn’t any other rider. Before this edition, he collected on average nearly five wins at every Tour since 2008. In 2009, he got six. He won the last four sprint finishes on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, where he is unbeaten since 2009. While Merckx’s record is still a way off, Hinault and most certainly Leducq look within Cavendish’s grasp.

“Obviously I aim to win multiple stages each year. But to set any goals, any number ... it does one of two things: It sets you up to fail for something or it puts like a mark on what you want to achieve and it can kind of stop you trying to move forward,” he said.

Were Cavendish to overtake Hinault, it wouldn’t mean he is a better overall rider than the famously bad-tempered “Badger,” who was strong on every ter-rain. But in a sprint, Cavendish has no equal, at least in this generation.

Britain’s Marc Cavendish crosses the finish line ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway, sec-

ond place, right, Peter Sagan of Slovakia, third place, left, and Andre Greipel of Germany, sec-ond left and fourth place, to win the fifth stage

of the Tour de France cycling race over 228.5 kilometers (142.8 miles) with start in Cagnes-

sur-Mer and finish in Marseille, southern France, Wednesday July 3, 2013.

Brazil could struggle to retain its position because its next competitive match is at the World Cup next June. Most high-ranked teams will play at least four more qualifying matches which score higher than friendlies in FIFA’s calculations.

World and European champion Spain tops the rankings despite its 3-0 beating from Bra-zil in the final last Sunday. Italy, third-placed at the Confederations Cup, climbs to No. 6. Uruguay rises seven to No. 12 after finishing fourth in the eight-team tournament.

Germany follows Spain, and Colombia rises four to its highest-ever position of No. 3. Argentina, which drew 0-0 with Colombia in a World Cup qualifying match, and the Netherlands are fourth and fifth. Portugal and Croatia fall to seventh and eighth, re-spectively.

Tenth-ranked Belgium reaches its highest-ever position. England drops six to No. 15,

losing its top-10 status for the first time since October 2008. Ivory Coast leads African teams at No. 13, and Confederations Cup entry Nigeria falls four to No. 35.

Mexico is CONCACAF’s best at No. 20, a fall of three places after failing to advance from its Confederations Cup group. The United States climbs six places to No. 22 as reward for a perfect record of four wins in June, including three World Cup quali-fiers and a 4-3 victory against Germany in a friendly.

Japan, which also played at the Confedera-tions Cup, leads Asia at No. 37. Iran’s qualifica-tion for the World Cup helped it rise 15 to No. 52. Qatar, which lost a key qualifier to Iran and has been eliminated, drops eight to No. 112.

Tahiti was punished for its three heavy losses at the Confederations Cup by dropping 16 to No. 154. New Zealand heads Oceania at No. 55, up two.

Reuters Striker Antonio Cassano has joined

Parma from fellow Serie A side Inter Milan, his new club said on Wednesday. A statement on Parma’s website (www.fcparma.com) said 30-year-old Cassano had joined for an undisclosed fee, while widespread media reports said he had signed a three-year deal.

“All the details of the operation that brought him here will be laid out tomor-row, Thursday July 4, at his presentation at the Tardini stadium,” the club said.

Cassano, who has had a colourful ca-reer marked by tantrums and personality clashes, has played 35 times for Italy, scoring 10 goals. He featured at Euro 2012 but has been left out of their World Cup qualifiers since then.

He was dropped by then Inter coach

Andrea Stramaccioni in March after a dressing room row, while he is also re-membered for saying at Euro 2012 that he hoped there were no homosexuals in the Italy team, a comment for which he later apologised.

He had been expected to join Parma as part of a deal that took fellow striker Ishak Belfodil to Inter but there was no confirmation of that element of the transfer.

Cassano, who has played for both Milan clubs having left AC for Inter last August, will wear his favourite number 99 jersey.

The player’s agent, Giuseppe Bozzo, said on Tuesday that Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi had already defined the signing as “the biggest of my time in charge of the Gialloblu (yellow and blue)”.

ROSARIO, Argentina - Atletico Mineiro playmaker Ronaldinho said the tournament favourites will fight for their lives in next week’s Libertadores Cup semi-final second leg after going down 2-0 to Newell’s Old Boys on Wednesday.

“It’s not over... We’re going to play for our lives, for the history of the club, we’re going to shed our blood there,” Ronaldinho told report-ers at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.

Argentina winger Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring for the hosts with a header after an hour and striker Ignacio Scocco added a second with a brilliant free kick 10 minutes from time, his sixth goal of the competition.

Striker Jo, fresh from helping Brazil win the Confederations Cup, was denied an equaliser for offside when Atletico trailed 1-0 while Ronaldinho had a quiet night.

The team that comes out on top in Belo Horizonte next Wednesday will meet the winners of the other tie between Paraguay’s Olimpia and Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia. Olimpia lead 2-0 after Tuesday’s first leg in Asuncion.

“It’s a very good result but the tie is open. We’ve played against the best team in the Libertadores, according to the statistics, and we won with authority,” Newell’s coach Gerardo Martino said.

Atletico, seeking their first South American club title, are top scorers in the competition with 25 goals in 11 matches and had found the net in every match bar one.

The Brazilian side’s goalkeeper Victor made two good saves from man of the match Rodriguez in the first half and the winger also hit the post in an inspirational performance as Newell’s look to reach their third final and win the trophy for the first time.

MANCHESTER, England — Ryan Giggs will have a player-coaching role next season at Man-chester United, in a move that is likely to alleviate the pressure on new boss David Moyes.

The 39-year-old Giggs has spent his entire career at United since making his debut in 1991. He has been taking his coaching diplomas and is due to attain the UEFA Pro Licence, United said in a statement on Thursday.

“I see this as the first step in my future career,” Giggs said. “I’m really looking forward to working alongside David Moyes and the

team.”Giggs’ advice as the most deco-

rated player in British football his-tory will be of great help to Moyes, who is under immediate pressure as the successor to Alex Ferguson to win trophies. Moyes didn’t win any silverware in 11 years at Everton.

“I’m delighted that Ryan has ac-cepted the chance to become player-coach,” Moyes said. “His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the mod-ern game. He and the players will benefit from his new role.”

Moyes has already brought in three coaches from Everton. Former United defender Phil Neville is

also expected to join the revamped coaching team as the new first-team coach.

Steve Round will be Moyes’ assistant, replacing Mike Phelan, after being the Scot’s No. 2 at Everton since July 2008. Former England international Chris Woods also arrives from Goodison Park to be goalkeeping coach, and Jimmy Lumsden will be another coach on United’s books.

Giggs extended his contract for one year last March. He has played more than 1,000 senior competi-tive matches, and his titles include 13 English Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, and two Champions Leagues.

MUNICH — Veteran Peru striker Claudio Pizarro has signed a one-year contract extension with Europe and Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich. Pizarro is in his second spell at Bayern after returning to the club from Werder Bremen last year. In total, he has made 281 appearances

for Bayern and scored 112 goals.Pizarro says in a club statement on Thursday:

“I am 34 — nothing better could happen to me than signing a contract with Bayern again.” He says he wants to keep playing football as long as possible.

The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century.

It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more

than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim.

The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inac-cessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency.

Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but

just lay them out in bamboo cages to decom-pose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas.

The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words.

The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery

while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion...

You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

JAKARTA - Indonesia technologically is ready to move to green energy, Head of the Indonesian Technology Assessment and Application Agency (BPPT), Marzan Iskandar, said here on Wednesday.

“Based on our technological capabilities we are ready. If the change happens approximately green energy could fulfill 25 percent of national energy needs in 2025,” he said.

In terms of business, however, he said, the target is hard to achieve. Therefore Indonesia should create a conducive investment climate for investors, promote technology development and provide incentives to speed it up.

Iskandar believed minimum incentives had been one of the key factors that had made investors reluctant to be involved in the green energy sector.

Starting this year however the government through the Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry (ESDM) began providing incentives.

“Green energy potential in Indonesia is very large,” Iskandar said.He explained Indonesia can produce 29,000 MW electricity from

its geothermal energy source, 75,000 MW from hydro-power and up to 50,000 MW from solar, wind, and waste.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said the gov-ernment continued promoting the use of green energy sources through various regulations and policies.

The government, he said, has also set the highest benchmark price for solar energy which is 25 cent USD for 25 years.

The government expects the use of green energy to reach 25 percent of the national energy needs by 2025.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck Tuesday afternoon at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles) and was cen-tered on the far western tip of Sumatra island in Aceh province.

Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured by a landslide or collapsing buildings in Bener Meriah district, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Financial Service Authority (OJK) and the Direc-

torate General of Tax (DJP) signed an agreement for cooperation in financial service sector monitoring.

“Both OJK and Directorate General of Tax have common responsibil-ity in maintaining stability to achieve a better national economy. This cooperation agreement is expected to be able to optimize each of the institutions in carrying out their mandates,” OJK chairman Muliaman D Hadad said at the signing ceremony here on Thursday.

The cooperation covers harmonization of regulations in the financial service and tax sector, utilization of data and information for carrying out supervisory functions including data and information about play-ers’ relations in ownership in the financial service sector, education and training as well as counseling for the two parties.

Under the agreement the Directorate General of Tax and OJK agreed to help each other in carrying out their duties.

Support to be given by the Directorate General of Tax to OJK includes provision of data and information about tax payers’ identities, tax compli-ance and ownership ties of players in the financial service sector.

OJK meanwhile would give tax data and information of players in the financial service sector.

“We hope OJK and the Directorate General of Tax could later set priorities to make their goals achieved,” Muliaman said.

Upon the request of OJK, the Directorate General of Tax could send its personnel to work at OJK in structural or functional posts based on OJK’s needs.

The signing of the agreement was aimed at increasing compliance of players in the financial service sector with regulations in the financial service and tax sector and optimizing tax and financial information and data in the financial service sector.

The agreement is also expected to be able to increase coordination and law enforcement in the financial service sector and also in education and training as well as counseling about tgax and financial services.

BANDA ACEH — Soldiers, police and volunteers fanned out across an earthquake-damaged region of western Indonesia on Wednesday, scouring the debris of fallen homes and landslides for possible victims of a temblor that killed at least 29 people and injured hundreds.

OJK, DJP cooperate in financial service sector monitoring

agency, said about 600 houses and building were damaged in the district, where many residents were still stay-ing in tents outside their homes.

“What we need right now are tents, since many people prefer to stay out-side,” said Fauzi, who like many In-donesians uses a single name. “They all are afraid of aftershocks.”

In neighboring Central Aceh district, 17 people were killed and about 350 were injured, said Subhan

Sahara, head of the local mitigation agency.

Nugroho said about 1,500 houses and buildings were damaged by the quake, which also triggered land-slides and caused hundreds of people to be evacuated to 10 temporary shelters.

Rescuers and other assistance teams arrived in Bener Meriah, while the air force dispatched aircraft to the region, Nugroho said.

“We are now concentrating on searching for people who may be trapped under the rubble,” said Rusli M. Saleh, the deputy district chief of Bener Meriah.

He said at least 25 of the injured in his district were hospitalized in intensive care.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of vol-canoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean.

In 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earth-quake off Aceh triggered a tsu-nami that killed 230,000 people in 14 countries.

BRUSSELS - The eurozone recession eased at the end of the second quarter, opening hope of a return to growth in the second half of the year, final data from a key survey signalled on Wednesday.

The Markit Eurozone Composite Purchasing Managers Index registered 48.7 points in June compared with 47.7 in May.

This was the third monthly increase in a row and marked a 15-month high, albeit still below the threshold of 50 points indicating growth or recession. The survey is closely watched as a leading indicator of activity.

“Euro area recession has extended into a record seventh consecutive quarter,” said Markit chief economist Chris Wil-liamson.

“However there is good reason to believe that the region is stabilising and on course to return to growth during the second half of the year.”

He said it was “most encouraging” to see the Spanish economy contracting at the slowest rate for two years, Italy seeing business activity fall at the slowest pace since Sep-tember 2011 and France’s downturn also moderating to the weakest level since last August.

But he cautioned that with Germany barely growing it was “difficult to identify any real growth drivers”, meaning that the pace of expansion across the 18-nation area “is likely to re-main subdued until business confidence improves further.”

The $250 billion economy surged 7.8 percent in the first quarter of this year, outpacing China, and a middle class stunted by widespread poverty, political strife and corruption is begin-ning to share in a prosperity captured for decades by a clannish business and political elite.

The growing affluence and a bur-geoning population have lured many global brands. Students and office workers flock to gleaming outlets opened by Zara, Gap, Forever 21, Starbucks and Japan’s Uniqlo. New apartment blocks are springing up on almost every corner of metropolitan Manila and other cities, often clus-tered around malls and office build-ings housing outsourcing businesses such as call centers, which are forecast to earn around $25 billion by 2016.

Luxury car maker Rolls Royce said it was flooded with inquiries since it opened its first dealership in Manila two weeks ago. The first car selling for $605,000 went to a popular TV show

host, according to newspaper reports.“Last year and this year have been a

big leap in terms of my total income,” Ante said. “Times have become better for our family.”

She said three years ago it was dif-ficult to come up with the school fees for her four children. Travel abroad or a new car were impossible, but “they seem more realistic now since my income is growing at a faster rate,” she said. The family holidayed in Hong Kong this year and a vacation in the U.S. and Canada is planned. They hope to afford a family-friendly Toyota Innova this year.

Many credit the new vitality to the policies of President Benigno Aquino III, elected in 2010 on promises of eradicating graft and fighting poverty. He introduced new taxes, reformed the judiciary, and set the country on a path that shows sign of enduring — it has now enjoyed three straight quarters of economic growth above 7 percent. Standard and Poor’s and

Fitch Ratings earlier this year up-graded the Philippines’ credit rating to investment grade for the first time.

“Disposable income has increased and we see a rising middle class,” said Jose E.B. Antonio, chairman of Cen-tury Properties Group that brought in Donald Trump’s sons and Paris Hilton to launch luxury condos in Manila.

Sheila Abay, a real estate agent for the past 10 years, said competition in her industry has become stiffer but she still sells more condominiums these days compared to five or 10 years ago.

It adds up to dramatic shift for a country that has perennially lagged most of its Southeast Asian neighbors despite perceived advantages of a relatively free media, democratic elec-tions and widespread use of English — the language of global business.

The Philippines is only sixth among 10 Southeast Asian countries in terms of GDP per head. Compared with Indonesia, which attracted nearly $20 billion in foreign investment last year, the Philippines managed only $2.8 billion, not far from $2.2 billion for Myanmar, a pariah state until re-cently. Thailand wooed more than 22 million visitors last year, the Philip-pines received 4.3 million.

Doubts still linger whether the country can stay on its new course.

MANILA — Just three years ago, a new car and an overseas holiday were nthinkable luxuries for J. Ante and her family of six. The insurance company manager’s commissions have soared since then as the Philip-pines, blighted for a generation by venal and incompetent leaders, has unexpectedly boomed, putting middle-class comforts within tantalizing reach of many.

Mursi, elected a year ago in a vote hailed as a new dawn for the Arab world’s biggest nation after the upris-ing of 2011, was held at a military facility in Cairo, a security source said. Earlier, in a shaky, handheld video, and in a Facebook post he denounced “a full military coup” that would plunge Egypt into “chaos.” But he urged his supporters not to fight back.

The head of the armed forces pledged new elections as part of a road map ironed out during a meeting with liberal opposition groups before

Mursi’s removal was announced. Liberals welcomed a relaunch of the transition to democracy, which they felt had been hijacked by Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood.

Military authorities immediately shut down television channels seen as sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood and began arresting other senior leaders.

Vast crowds partied in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, recalling the Arab Spring revolution two years ago when the army toppled the autocrat Hosni

Mubarak. But in clashes after dark across the country, at least 14 people were killed and over 340 wounded.

The fall of the first elected leader to emerge from the Arab Spring revolutions of 2011 raised questions about the future of political Islam, which had seemed triumphant. Deeply divided, Egypt’s 84 mil-lion people find themselves again a focus of concern in a region trauma-tised by the civil war in Syria.

Straddling the Suez Canal and a key piece in the security of Israel, many powers have an interest in Egypt’s stability.

The army put combat troops and tanks on streets around a gathering of thousands of Mursi’s supporters in Cairo. It said it would keep order across the country.

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea’s government said Thurs-day that it has reached out to North Korea to discuss restarting a jointly run factory park after weeks of testy silence between the two sides.

The industrial complex in the North Korean city of Kaesong, just north of the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas, has been shut since a political showdown in April.

As South Korea held military exercises with the U.S. not far from the border, North Korea pulled its 53,000 workers in pro-test. South Korea then ordered its managers to leave as well, against their wishes.

The closing of Kaesong, the centerpiece of joint projects hatched during a previous era of warming ties between the war-time foes, dealt a symbolic blow to reconciliation efforts between the divided Koreas. The project, which facilitated nearly $2 billion

a year in cross-border trade, had been the last joint project left as relations soured over the past five years.

The closure also meant a loss of salary for tens of thousands of North Korean workers employed in factories run by 123 South Korean companies, and a loss of goods and orders for business managers who relied on Kaesong to churn out everything from shoes and watches to cables and electrical components.

On Thursday, South Korea said it proposed holding working-level talks with North Korean officials in the truce village of Panmunjom inside the DMZ.

Seoul wants to set the grounds for discussions on restarting the idled factory park, as well as ways to manage the facilities and goods that South Korean businesses left behind. South Korea proposed holding talks Saturday and said it would send three delegates, the Unification Ministry said. There was no immediate response from Pyongyang.

LA PAZ, Bolivia - The European rerouting of the Bolivian presidential plane over suspicions that National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden was aboard ignited outrage Wednesday among Latin American leaders who called it a stunning violation of national sovereignty and disrespect for the region.

But as President Evo Morales arrived home after an unplanned 14-hour layover in Vienna, there was no immediate sign that Latin America anger would translate into a rush to bring Snowden to the region that had been seen as

likeliest to defy the U.S. and give him asylum.

Snowden was still believed to be in the transit area of Moscow’s inter-national airport. As his case grinds on, it appears to illustrate the strength of U.S. influence, despite the initial sense that the Obama administration lost control of the situation when China al-lowed Snowden to flee Hong Kong.

Morales originally planned to fly home from a Moscow summit via Western Europe, stopping in Lis-bon, Portugal and Guyana to refuel. His plane was diverted to Vienna Tuesday night after his government said France, Spain and Portugal all refused to let it through their airspace

because they suspected Snowden was on board. Spain’s ambassador to Austria even tried to make his way onto the plane on the pretext of hav-ing a coffee to check that Snowden wasn’t there, Morales said.

Morales had sparked speculation that he might try to help Snowden get out during a visit to Russia after he said that his country would be willing to consider granting him asylum. Austrian officials said Morales’ plane was searched early Wednesday by Austrian border po-lice after Morales gave permission. Bolivian and Austrian officials both said Snowden was not on board.

Bolivia’s ambassador to the

United Nations, Sacha Llorenti, said “the orders came from the United States.”

“They want to frighten and in-timidate me but they won’t scare me,” Morales said before finally taking off to Spain’s Canary Islands and on to Brazil and then home. “We’re not in colonial or imperial times ... this is an aggression against Latin America.”

The presidential plane carrying Morales arrived in Bolivia’s capital around midnight Wednesday local time. Addressing his supporters in the airport, he called what had hap-pened to him “an open provocation to the continent.”

Throughout Latin America there was a sense of deep injustice and offense at what was widely believed to be U.S.-prompted interference with Bolivia’s equivalent of Air Force One.

“This is a humiliation for a sister nation and for the South American continent,” said Cristina Fernandez, the leftist president of Argentina, describing the plane’s rerouting as a “vestige of the colonialism that we thought we had completely overcome.”

She said Morales’ “total and indisputable” immunity as head of state had been violated when he was “illegally detained in old Europe.”

Apple says it has hired Paul Deneve, the CEO of high-end fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent, to work on special projects reporting to CEO Tim Cook.

Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. did not give more details on what Deneve will be doing. The hire comes as Apple faces increased competition from rivals like Google and Samsung, who are developing their own lines of

elegant and often less expensive products. The French luxury name is known for edgy styles — $4,000 strapless

body-hugging leather dresses, $1,400 leather jeans and $800 platform shoes. Apple, of course, is known for the Mac, the iPhone and the iPad, which

ranges from $499 to $929 for the latest version.Apple also sells handbags designed for its products, from brands such as

Michael Kors and Kate Spade.

The couture on display in a new exhibit at Kensington Palace shows that each, in her way, made a style statement in Britain and beyond.

Princess Margaret — the queen’s younger sister — dressed in some of the boldest styles of the day and was looked up to as one of fashion’s leading ladies. And Diana practically embodied the ‘80s style and was scru-tinized for what she wore wherever she went.

“We’re looking at how the three women dressed to the trends and how they adapted those rules to the rules of royal dressing,” said Cassie Davies-Strodder, the exhibition’s curator.

The show, which opens Thursday, features 21 couture dresses from the three royals’ wardrobes, ranging from regal silk gowns worn by a young queen in the 1950s to the sparkly and sequined numbers Diana sported in the 1980s and 90s.

While Diana’s gowns are likely the biggest draw for many visitors, Davies-Strodder said she was nowhere near as adventurous in her style as the fun-loving Margaret, who threw famous parties and mixed with pop stars like The Beatles. The princess, who died in 2002, was a trendsetter in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s and ‘70s.

ing fashions more closely. She was really part of the chic London set at the time, and what she wore was news,” she said.

Among the outfits worn by Marga-ret on show was a dramatic long kaftan and turban set, reflecting the “ethnic dressing” trend of the ‘70s, worn at a party on the Caribbean island of Mus-tique in 1976. Another eye-catching display was a glamorous, jeweled ball gown with a Marilyn Monroe-style halter neckline worn in 1951.

“It’s very Hollywood and quite

risqué — it was quite shocking at the time, especially because she was also seen smoking a cigarette,” Davies-Strodder added.

The full-length gowns worn by the queen when she was in her 30s, shown in adjacent rooms at the palace, were traditional and demure in contrast.

All featured a feminine nipped-in waist and were designed in pale creamy shades of peach, cream or grey — royal designers preferred light-colored clothes because they show up better in a large crowd and on

black and white television, Davies-Strodder said. The dresses also illustrated what “diplomatic dressing” was all about. For a tour of Pakistan the queen wore a gown in the country’s national colors of green and white, and when she visited Canada she sported a dress embroi-dered with mayflowers, the provincial flower of Nova Scotia.

A final room featured five dresses worn by Diana that showcased her “Dy-nasty Di” days: All big padded shoulders, dropped waist, lots of sparkles and high drama. There was a spectacular blue velvet sequined dress with a flirty, flouncy skirt and an oversized bow, and a sleeker white one-shoul-dered column gown that showed how Diana pro-gressed toward a more sophisticated look in the 1990s.

The show, called “Fashion Rules,” will be displayed at Kensington Palace for two years.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NO “Scandal” here: Kerry Washington is a newlywed. The star of the TV series married pro-fessional football player Nnamdi Asomugha last week in the U.S.

E! reported the nuptials Wednesday and posted a copy of the couple’s marriage license online. The Blaine County recorder’s office con-firmed the June 24 filing to The Associated Press.

The 36-year-old actress and 31-year-old athlete were married June 24. One of Asomugha’s relatives per-

formed the ceremony.Besides starring in the ABC political thriller, Washington’s recent

credits include the films “Peeples” and “Django Unchained.”

The thriller by cult Mexican film director Alfonso Cuaron will be shown in 3D on the first day of the festival on August 28, organisers of the yearly film industry gathering said in a state-ment.

The festival on the Venice Lido runs

until September 7.Cuaron is no stranger to Venice,

where he won two awards in 2001 with his film “Y tu mama tambien” -- best scenario and best young male talent for its two heroes Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

HOLLYWOOD heavyweights Sandra Bullock and George Clooney will open the Venice film festival next month with their new movie “Grav-ity” where they play two astronauts

on an ill-fated mission.

To hear Elijah Wood talk about the 1978 slasher film “Halloween,” he sounds, well, giddy.

“I’ve seen it so many times,” he said in a recent interview. “The feeling that I get from the movie? It’s almost like the feeling one would get from watching a Christmas movie. It made me feel happy! Like, I don’t know if it’s a sense of nostalgia I attach to the film?

Maybe I’ve seen it so many times it feels like, you know, an old familiar record or something. But I put it on and I feel joy watching that film.”

Such is the reaction of a true lover of the horror genre. The 32-year-old actor, known for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and his FX TV series “Wilfred” and in the music world as a

popular DJ, has an encyclopedic knowledge of scary movies, with a starring role in the new film “Maniac” and his own fledgling horror production company.

Wood plays a serial killer in “Maniac,” a film told entirely from his point of view — you see Wood only in his reflections or in his hands as they

cross in front of the camera. In a recent interview, Wood said he found the experience to be ex-

tremely technical but also an exciting, collaborative effort.“You go into (shooting from a point of view aspect) thinking, ‘It’s

gonna be easy. It’s a single shot but you’re under such intense param-eters that every scene became a puzzle.”

Wood’s new production company The Woodshed Horror Company has three movies in the works. Its first film picked up for distribution, “Toad Road”, was discovered at the horror film festival Nightmare City (which The Woodshed helped present.) It will hit theaters in

October.
