This booklet examines the partnerships that twoBritish further education (FE) colleges have formed withprivate-sector firms since the incorporation of FE colleges in April1993. Described first is the partnership arrangement betweenGuildford College and a private-sector catering firm that began withsharing of the costs of renovating and refurbishing the collegecanteen and that has since allowed both partners to share the profitsfrom the catering firm's supplying students with the types of foodthe students actually want. The second half of the booklet discussesthe partnership between St. Helens College and the pharmaceuticalfirm SmithKline, which donated an unwanted manufacturing complexconsisting of a factory, landmark building, and parking lot to St.Helens. The college is working to convert the complex into atechnology center by doing the following: converting the landmarkbuilding into offices; adapting the factory units to incorporate thecollege's schools of art, media, and design; establishing a researchand development wing to develop a transfer technology center;establishing an open learning/resource center; relocating the studentrefectory and social areas; and developing information technology toprovide videoconferencing, a cyber cafe, and Internet access.
