Improve the self-esteem of the world.Consider a world where high

self-esteem is the norm not the

exception. We envision that as

a world where people are living

life to the fullest and reaching

their highest potential. A world

where kindness prevails over

hatred and laughter drowns

out tears.

That’s a world where we want to be.

64,000the number of millilitres of aerosol paint used to create the Street art gallery

What do you do with an old skateboard park surround-ed by chain-link fence? You create an outdoor all-purpose sport court and an outdoor gallery. Located at the en-trance to Nose Creek Park on Main Street, this project was created during ARTember 2011, led by local aerosol artist Zach Abbott as part of a free workshop.

Watch for the boards to get a whole new look when the artists take to the panels again this fall, turning spray paint into art right before your eyes Sept. 28 and 29 during ARTember. (For more details, visit creativeaidrie.ca)MaP loCator aa2

11,100the approximate number of vehicles that annually drive past the fi rst Painted utility BoX on the corner of Main Street and first avenue

The utility box was turned into a work of art in Sep-tember 2012 by local artist Veronica Funk as part of the Awesome Airdrie initiative. The design was selected by businesses near the intersection and it has enhanced the streetscape tremendously since its completion. There are plans to turn more utility boxes into public art displays in the future. MaP loCator i9

2,194.6the size in metres of the total “canvas” of the Miller Mural

When you drive by this impressive 300-foot mural on First Avenue, you won’t believe it used to be just an old metal storage facility. The owners of the property, Miller Trucking, hired two area artists to turn it into a work of art. The colourful piece is becoming a popular backdrop for wedding photos and is worth exploring up close. See how the artists worked with corrugated metal to create ‘waves of art’ for all to enjoy. The work was designed and installed by Zach Abbott and Graham Masters.MaP loCator h9

1,130the number of artists and community members involved in creating the Main Street art ProJeCt

At Centre Avenue and Main Street you’ll fi nd the work of hundreds of Airdrie residents along a 300-foot mural. The Main Street Art Project combined the talents of more than 30 artists and 1,100 eager volunteers, from school-children to dog walkers and even the local Twins and Trip-lets Association, to create a colourful mural on an empty lot. Each panel of the mural contains a curving grey line which represents the pathways that connect Airdrie resi-dents to each other.

The Main Street Art Project is a temporary exhibit. It will remain at its current location until construction begins, but plans are to move most of the pieces to a new location when required. (To learn more, visit creativeairdrie.ca)MaP loCator i10

Airdrie Public Library (APL) is much more than books, and the library off ers a great deal to those visiting the city from near or far. Along with its regular services and programs, APL plays host to local, regional and travelling art, with six exhibitions a year of approximately 70 pieces each. With more than 370 visitors coming through the library’s doors each day, the APL art gallery is an impor-tant cultural stop in the community.

The library also hosts a variety of authors for both adults and children.

364.5 the number of metres of lines in the abstract work the CollaBoration ProJeCt on permanent display at the Chinook Winds fire department

Drop by the fi re hall’s main foyer and enjoy the work of abstract artist Koos De Jongh. Open to the public be-tween 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the installation of paint-ings take advantage of the hall’s unique open design.

The Collaboration Project - 2012 is an installation of paintings organized into three distinct panels.

According to the artist, the centre panel holds 16 individual paintings of varied depths. Each painting is complete on its own yet becomes part of the larger fo-cus representing the eff ects of collaboration. The smaller panels on the left and right each contain three paintings representing the physical distances (both nearby and distant) in which collaboration has no barriers. Blue is used as the grounding base colour for the centre panel, refl ecting the initial balance of the world. Yellow, the pri-mary colour of the smaller panels, is the colour of hope. Orange represents humankind, each individual trying to fi nd his or her own place in the world. The red lines are the paths of individuals trying to improve their own lives without any collaborative eff orts. The black lines are the undercurrent, the road map (detours and all), of life. Red-to-white transition lines show that collaboration requires overcoming obstacles to create a more harmonious life. The heavily textured white line is the successful outcome of collaboration. The paintings are built at three diff erent depths to symbolize the obstacles in life’s path.MaP loCator X5

In the windows of Genesis Place, near the indoor soc-cer fi elds, you’ll fi nd the stained glass work Out of the Blue, by Heinz and Patricia Demes. The artists were com-missioned to create stained glass that would act as large glass murals visible from both sides. The work consists of various images representing the theme of Airdrie’s legacy, thriving present and optimistic future. Whimsi-cal in design, it features the contemporary treatment of images on vibrant, colourful modern glass, created with classic techniques and modern construction. The detailed images are presented in a medium not overly used in North America. This unique mural is a beautiful legacy of Airdrie’s past and present, for future genera-tions to enjoy.MaP loCator l12

6the number of timbers used to create the gWaCheon toteM PoleS

Six handcrafted totem poles stand in Gwacheon Park (part of Nose Creek Park), donated by Airdrie’s sister city, Gwacheon, South Korea. The totem poles were received as a gift to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations and friendship between Gwacheon and Airdrie. In 2006, timbers were exported from Canada to ensure they were hardy enough to withstand our harsh winters. After they arrived in Gwacheon, work was commissioned to a local artisan, Kim Ji-Moung, who crafted the totems and ac-companied them on their journey back to Canada for the installation ceremony in Airdrie. 5the weight in tons of the Centennial SPhere

The Centennial Sphere sculpture outside City Hall on Main Street was a community-driven art project created to celebrate Airdrie’s Centennial in 2009. The piece was created by Cochrane artist Honsun Chu.

The sphere represents Airdrie, and each water jet ring represents a year since its inception in 1909. The three square beams represent three elements – time, space and people – that have touched, supported and infl uenced the growth and development of Airdrie over the past 100 years. These three fundamental beams represent the es-sence of Airdrie and are interrelated. Time advances in a linear direction, therefore representing past, present and future. Space represents three-dimensional expansion and growth. People represent the residents, the commu-nities, the businesses and the government. They are the dynamic force that transforms a location into a city.MaP loCator i11

2the number of SCulPtureS donated to airdrie neighbourhoods

Two of Airdrie’s northwest neighbourhoods boast sculptures for all to enjoy. Reunion is home to a bronze statue of a little girl taking a peek inside her mom’s picnic basket. In Sagewood, a statue of a young soccer player graces the community. Both are by Cochrane bronze sculptors Don and Shirley Begg.

The Reunion statue honours the Bowen family, which originally farmed the land. The image of the little girl and the picnic basket refl ects the Bowens’ family values, and recalls the fact that they were of-ten seen enjoying picnics together in the early 1900s. MaP loCator d6

The Sagewood statue’s theme was chosen because of Airdrie residents’ love of soccer and the neighbour-hood’s close proximity to the Monklands soccer fi elds. The statue of a young soccer player is based on a local boy named Gordie, and the Airdrie Soccer Association logo is immortalized on the statue. MaP loCator C9

In a world of flat-packed, cookie-cutter and mass-produced style, there is nothing more exciting than finding a unique piece of art or furniture to add to your home. Handcrafted and one of a kind – the sort of piece that comes with a story. What if you could have all of that – AND the satisfaction of knowing that you made it

yourself? And no, I’m not talking about building an Ikea coffee table MacGyver style!Muk-Luk Magpies in Sierra Springs has an art class to suit everyone and anyone – from the

clumsy beginner right through to the more experienced. These classes are perfect for trying something new, releasing your inner artiste or even bonding as a group in a fun, relaxing environment.

We joined one of the studio owners, Shawn MacPherson, for a Mystical Mosaic class and were easily coached through the fun day – with laughs aplenty and the beautiful Bella’s light snoring to keep us company. Weighing in at 170 pounds, the gorgeous St. Bernard has the run of the studio and is kept busy all day welcoming visitors to the gift shop, which is stocked with unbeatable pieces by local artisans.

Creating something beautiful with your own two hands gives you the most incredible sense of accomplishment and is a marvellous way to spend a few hours. There is so much pride to be had in showing off something striking in your home and being able to say, I made that.

Treat yourself and try one of Shawn’s classes – you won’t be disappointed, and you won’t leave empty-handed! Most of the classes at Muk-Luk Magpies include all of the materials you will need to complete your project and should you find yourself addicted to your new artistic release, they offer a membership program which gives you a 20 per cent discount off courses and supplies, and unlimited drop-ins to the studio to work on your projects.

You want to eat out – but you have children and the thought of inflicting your witching hour onto the general public fills you with terror. So, you go for the same old boring, but child-safe, locations.

It’s hardly gourmet dining, but the kids are happy and you don’t have to do the dishes – it’s a half-hearted win.

I promise you – eating out with little people doesn’t have to be limited to the famous golden arches and greasy kid’s meals.

We are fairly new to town but have happily discovered that no matter your occasion, mood or craving, Airdrie has some amazing child-friendly restaurants for when you have the rug rats in tow.

With my official taste-tester close at hand, (almost) two-year-old Poppy and I have chosen our Top 5 spots to eat out in Airdrie, where kids are welcomed just as much as adults, the food is tasty, and there’s more to choose from than just mini portions of deep-fried delights.

amato gelatoWe knew we’d found our new family favourite when Poppy erupted into squeals as soon as we’d pulled into the parking lot.

To be fair, we have been here three times already this month and Poppy now recognizes the signage ... but I think we’ve created a monster!

The gelato here – as you would expect from a shop that specializes in it – is sensational! But when you can also choose from lovely, frothy cappuccinos, customized affogatos and easily the best banana split I’ve ever had, you know you don’t need to look anywhere else for your sweet treats.

If I’m being honest, Poppy is really just my excuse to eat here as regularly as possible. This is our favourite spot for Mummy-Daughter dates while Daddy is away. With what is easily the best ice cream in Airdrie (and possibly even further afield), it is also the owners that keep us coming back. They say kids are excellent judges of char-acter, and Poppy just adores Shaireen and Altaf, so you know their friendliness and passion is genuine!

BrewstersBrewsters is easily, and strangely, one of our more un-expected havens. It’s a pub. It’s a brewery. And yet – it has crayons on hand and lovely staff who make faces at Poppy from across the room and happily provide cups of ice when she has sore, teething gums.

We go to Brewsters because I love their Alberta Beef Tacos, and Hubby is literally addicted to their Bavar-ian Beef Dip. The reason we go so often is because they have booths (perfect seating for trapping toddlers who hate highchairs), the waitresses make sure you are fully stocked with crayons before worrying about drinks, and their extensive menu is guaranteed to please the taste-buds of any age. It is one of the only bars in Airdrie that say they welcome families but actually, truly, make you feel welcome when you arrive with little people at your side.

good earth CaféWhen we first moved to Airdrie we were panicked to find out it would be a long, three-week wait until we got our internet connected.

We struck gold when we stumbled into Good Earth. Yes, they had free Wi-Fi, but far more importantly – they make a hot chocolate so good it will curl your toes and a cappuc-cino smooth enough to help overcome any-sized jetlag.

What we really love about Good Earth is the comfort factor. Our favourite spot is cocooned in the leather seats by the front door, right by the kids’ play area. Once she’s cheekily syphoned off our whipped cream and chocolate drizzle, Poppy is then happily occupied with the selection of toys, books and miniature furniture.

To balance out indulgence like hot chocolates with whipped cream, Good Earth also offers a great selection of meals and snacks – meaning you can hang out and en-joy the caffeine hit until the toys lose their appeal!

Boston PizzaFancy a night out but can’t seem to find child-friendly eateries? Well, look no further. Boston Pizza fits the bill perfectly.

Grown-up surroundings, an extensive menu and a sen-sationally packed kids’ pizza toy box ... what more do you need? Poppy has just discovered the delicious messiness that is chicken wings, and we of course love the pizza.

Again, they have the magic booths that give Poppy the illusion of freedom while happily keeping her captive. The staff is friendly and interactive with her, obviously very used to dealing with families. And Poppy’s absolute fa-vourite thing about Boston Pizza – watching chefs work in the open-concept kitchen – is even more entertaining than TV!

ricky’s all day grillThere is so much to like about Ricky’s. It is the absolute definition of kid friendly. With its crayons and booklets ready at the front door, entrapment booths and a custom-ized kid’s menu – it’s the perfect compromise between adult and child-friendly dining.

Without a doubt, what won me over at Ricky’s was the treasure chest. That’s right: all kid’s meals come with a free toy of their choice. As many parents will bemoan, you can have the perfect outing and meal only for it all to be destroyed in those last few minutes while you’re waiting for the bill. A toddler’s patience will stretch only so far....

That is never a problem at Ricky’s – once Poppy has a tummy full of French toast and the grumbling is just about to start – out comes the treasure chest! The wonder and awe of this brilliant concept guarantees us enough time to finish our breakfast, top up our coffees and still leave with a happy toddler. A new toy for the car ride home is an absolute bonus.

How does a man eat? Let me count the ways. Well, at least the seven best ways in Airdrie as far as I am concerned.

With that I have written this piece with two thoughts in mind. First, I am hoping to help men find really good food – quality and of course quantity – and second, I am hoping to shed some light for some women on why we men go where we go and order what we order. So here we go.

7 - yum yum BBQ korean Cuisine - hot ChickenThe cool thing about this dish is the spice does not come from a sauce. The meat itself is spicy. How they do that I have no idea but I don’t really care. What I do know is I order a half chicken and fries. I’m not sure how big the bird was but I don’t need the fries (and I only order the small) because there is plenty of food without them. And sorry ladies, we do not want to share an order … we can handle it.

6 - Casa Mia Pizzaria - friesI love French fries and there are a lot of places in town that do them really well. Well head on over to the Italian/pizza place to find the best in town. They simply are that. And in case you were wondering, men will pick a restau-rant just for the fries.

5 - original Joe’s - the double dogCome on, it’s two hot dogs, with bacon AND jalapenos AND grilled onions AND pretty much whatever else you want on it. Did I say it’s two hot dogs and not small ones? No one else in town does a dish like it and in my opinion no one else should try.

4 - Paul’s Pizza & Steak house - PizzaI am not going to recommend toppings because pizza is personal. You like what you like, and I like a lot of stuff on it. Doesn’t matter where I order from I will either make up my own or modify one of the specialties. So at Paul’s I usually order the Paul’s special but I take the shrimp off and add jalapenos. Regardless, they put lots of toppings on all their pizzas and the small is more than enough ... that’s why I order the medium.

3 - five guys Burgers and fries - the BurgerMy fi rst experience with Five Guys was in South Carolina back in 2010 on my way to The Masters (sorry, had to throw that in). When I found out they were bringing one to Airdrie I knew my BMI (Body Mass Index) was in BIG trouble. It is almost impossible to describe how good these burgers are. They are cooked when or-dered and you get to pick exactly what you want on them. How they do their fries is ridiculous; you have to love a grease-soaked bag at the end of a meal.

2 - the Woods (Woodside golf Course) - Back ribsI am a rib snob and I know what a good rib is. If you have to use any amount of pressure to get it off the bone … it is not “fall off the bone.” Well, no pres-sure needed here. Their ribs are simply some of the best I have ever had. My only complaint is they only have one kind of BBQ sauce so I can’t eat them every day without getting a bit bored.

1 - rico’s in the Village - Pulled PorkOMG. Alright, not a guy thing to say, but this has earned it. It is simply the best item in Airdrie. I really don’t know how to describe it. Let’s just say I usually start my meal with it and when my wife is ordering her dessert I end my meal with it, too. It’s true ... ask her. But I have a problem people. Rico has taken this item off the everyday menu for lack of demand. He thinks it’s because every restaurant does pulled pork but believe me, no one does it like him. He does bring it back as his “Rico’s Craving” from time to time but I need your support ... order more pork!!

A man’s guide to the good stuff in Airdrie

Well, that’s my list. You may agree, you may not. I know there are a lot of other great dishes out there but my wife would only let me gain so much weight for this piece. And let’s face it, boys, we can talk a big game but in the end “happy wife, happy life.” Thanks for reading.

One of the great things about RVing these days is that from wireless mobile Internet keys to 3G-enabled tablets to the neighbourhood Starbucks,

there are plenty of ways to get online while on the road. Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, photo sharing – it can all be a bit daunting. Here’s our take on how to stay connected and share your experiences while RVing.

BloggingBlogging has been around for a while and at Bucars RV Centre, we’re huge fans. Reasons include being able to document your trips and excursions and being able to share with your friends and family back home. Many blogs have been turned into books and even sitcoms on TV. The possibilities for content are endless!

FacebookNot only a great place to see what your friends and family are up to back at home, Facebook is also a great way for RVers to share their experience on the road or at the RV park.

Photo SharingMany RVers have used smart phones as a replacement for a regular “point-and-shoot” camera. Plus, it’s super simple to send a photo via e-mail at the push of a button. Some photo sharing apps we’re liking lately include Instagram, Diptic and TiltShiftGen for fun effects.

TwitterTwitter is for short, 140-character updates to a follower base. It is a great way to keep up on current events happening in real time. Many worldly events are announced on Twit-ter before they get to mainstream media. Twitter is just fun!

Tips for great contentIf you’re stuck for what to say, there are a few ideas: • Keepalistofthingsastheycometomind;• ShareyourfavouritespotstoRV,orfood recipes;and,• Sharephotosandvideosofyourtrips.

Airdrie has a rich history of settlers and railways. Starting out as a stop destination for the Cal-gary and Edmonton Railway Company train that delivered mail because of Nose Creek, soon

buildings were built along the railway with workers living nearby to care for the train.

Before long, general stores, blacksmith shops and a school were built to service the establishing families and growing number of people travelling to this tiny hamlet to begin a new life. Receiving supplies via the train, Aird-rie grew to be a substantial size and, after much paper-work, was granted village status Sept. 9, 1909. Celebrat-ing its centennial in 2009, Airdrie has become one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, with close to 46,000 inhabitants.

Airdrie enjoys the best of both worlds – urban and rural – and nowhere is this more evident than during the annual Fall Fair – Horticulture & Bench Show.

Marking its 50th anniversary this year, the event cel-ebrates the tradition of people showcasing their skills in handicrafts, baking, fl ower and vegetable cultivation, fi ne arts and other disciplines.

“The fair was started in 1963 by the Nose Creek Com-munity Club in Balzac, and it was initially held in Balzac,” says Brenda Moon, president of the Airdrie & District Ag-ricultural Society, which now hosts the event. “I’m told those early fall fairs were huge, because in addition to the kinds of things we profi le now, they also judged hay and grain, and they needed lots of room.”

By 1976, the fair had relocated to the Plainsmen Arena in Airdrie. Now held at Genesis Place, it remains an annual highlight area residents and visitors alike.

With 89 exhibitors and 575 exhibits at last year’s fair, organizers are hoping to see as many as 600 entries for the event’s 50th anniversary.

Highlights for 2013 include gold-themed classes such as baking; a new gluten-free baking section; a spray art section; and a celebrity cake-decorating contest and sub-sequent cake auction supporting Airdrie Food Bank.

Exhibits are open to the public Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are no admission fees but spectators are asked to bring a food bank donation.for more information, visit airdrieagsociety.com/events/fall-fair

airdrie and district agricultural SocietyFounded in 1909, the Airdrie and District Agricul-tural Society (ADAS) is a family friendly organization that promotes agriculture as well as rural and urban communities growing healthy together. A dynamic non-profi t organization with a diverse membership base, ADAS has a history of successful community contributions and continues to be active in Airdrie and area.

The society’s projects have included obtain-ing funding and supporting construction for – as well as operating – the Plainsmen Arena and the Twin Arenas, acquiring land for Airdrie’s Chinook Winds ball diamonds, donating a storage building to Airdrie Food Bank, and acquiring nearby land to accommodate future agricultural pursuits and com-munity activities. ADAS is also an active supporter of 4-H clubs, post-secondary scholarships, Meals on Wheels, youth steer and heifer shows, and more.

The society organizes and hosts a number of pop-ular local events, helping to connect Airdrie’s strong rural roots with the urban centre it has now become. ADAS is a proud sponsor of the wild pony race por-tion of the junior rodeo held daily during the Airdrie Pro Rodeo June 27-July 1. This is a great opportunity to cheer on some talented young buckaroos as they put their skills to the test.

On July 27, the society showcases life on a work-ing ranch with its Ranch Rodeo held at the Airdrie rodeo grounds. See how traditional ranching skills used by local area ranchers and farmers are turned into fun events. Events feature branding, sorting, penning, doctoring and loading as well as a kids’ calf scramble. Admission is free with donations to Airdrie Food Bank, and tickets are available on event day for a post-rodeo BBQ.

The Airdrie and District Agricultural Society is especially pleased to host the 50th Annual Fall Fair – Horticulture & Bench Show Aug. 17-18 at Genesis Place. The event features various competitions and judging in categories that span all ages, including vegetable growing, children’s crafts, baking, fi ne art and photography. Exhibits are open to the public on Aug. 18. airdrieagsociety.com

This Summer: Flip and Fly with the Airdrie Edge Gymnastics Club!

Learn more gymnastics, more fl ips and more cartwheels from the certifi ed gymnastics experts! Airdrie Edge Gymnastics Club offers summer classes for

ages 24 months all the way up to adult! You can come to gymnastics every day of the week!

Children aged six to 12 can join “Megagym!” Megagym breaks down the barriers between gymnastics sports. Children attend from Monday to Friday for 4.5 hours each day to practice gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline, acrobatics and the freerunning skills of Parkour. Megagym is a great place for your child to have fun developing new skills or to improve those they already have. With all of the different activities, it can help you to decide what to sign up for in the fall.

Children progress quickly in Megagym. We have found that gymnasts who attend this session after one of the regular sessions can often master skills that had been giving them trouble before.

For those who are new to gymnastics, we teach basic and beginner movements along with safety skills that help with co-ordination, balance, strength, agility and fl exibility. Intermediate and advanced gymnasts build on the abilities they already have to master complex and powerful skills.

Children aged two to fi ve are invited to “Minigym!” Gymnasts work on the same appara-tus that the bigger kids do, but with adaptations for age, size and interests. Minigym classes are one hour long, Monday to Friday. A parent joins each child under the age of 4. Having a parent at their side makes the experience as personal and interesting as possible. We have weekly skill-specifi c classes during the summer, too.

Ages 10 and up can join “Aerial Arts” or “Handsprings and Flips” or “Parkour Ninjas” to practice acrobatics in the air, on one of our many sprung surfaces, or while running up the wall.

Our gym is equipped with the latest equip-ment and safety matting for early-learner gymnasts all the way up to world-class athletes.

For those aged 15 to adult — whether trying gymnastics for the fi rst time, branching out from another sport or building skills for fun and fi tness — our Evening Drop-in continues throughout the summer with extended hours.Make a decision to join the Airdrie Edge Gym Club this summer!

Whether you’re new, or an experienced gym-nast, traceur, cheerleader or backyard trampoline enthusiast, our summer programs can get you going. Progress safely and as fast as possible by learning correct techniques, good judgment and sound practice habits.

Registration for our summer programs starts on Thursday, May 28, and is ongoing throughout the summer as long as spaces are available.
