Eastenders Evaluation Creating a distinctive band identity

How do you know what soap this is?

These recognisable pictures from the opening credits are from the well known TV soap opera called ‘Eastenders’ . I know that these are from the programme because of the river Thames running through

the centre of the capital city. This soap runs on every week night apart from Wednesday and weekends on BBC 1.

Where is it set?

The soap is set in East London – Watford, Albert Square.

Which institution broadcasts it?

The Soap is shown on BBC 1. It is on every week night apart from Wednesday and weekends at 7.30pm.

Eastenders is set in the present. It is an on going soap which runs along side our daily lives. It becomes part of our cultural psyche, because they are repeated so often. They become who ‘we’ are.

When is it set?

From the music what do we assume about the lifestyles of the characters?

Storylines are relatable – audiences can watch and understand what is happening, and empathises with characters. The dull slow music connotes that their

lifestyle. Its boring, slow, and depressing. By having a grey flitter over the camera it makes the characters

lives look even more dull.

This low angle shot of a football, school bag and kit bag suggests from the mise en scene that a young boy lives here.

As the camera pans up the screen, there is a pink school bag. This also suggests that there is another young girl in the house.

As the camera pans up the stairs, the audience sees clutter scattered on the stairs. This has all been selectively placed here to create a mise en scene.

The pair of tracksuit bottoms casually slung over the banister, reveals they are a untidy household. The décor of the stairs suggests it hasn’t been decorated for a while, maybe to not enough money.

A mid shot of a shocked man, suggests that he doesn’t live there and is trying to sneak out after a one-night-stand.

The camera then cuts to the café, where a very made up woman is sitting. Her body language and appearance looks very out of place with her surroundings.

A mid shot of the lady shows she looks sad and unhappy to be in the café.

Answering the phone in a disappointed way , suggest she doesn’t want to speak to the person on the other end.

A dark room with spot light lighting suggests that he is evil and is on the phone to the lady in the café.

The man refers to her as a prostitute, the camera is like a on looker in the café. This suggests she is embarrassed.

The camera angle suggests that we are peaking through on a conversation that is secret, black mail.

A long shot shows other work men of the square, making flirtatious gestures, stereotyping her as a slag from her appearance.
