Summer School for Solo and Choral Singers and Piano Accompanists

2 AIMS International Music School

www.aims.uk.com

Welcome to our 2015 brochure. After another successful summer course in 2014, we are delighted to present our programme for 2015.

Our main summer course will take place on 16-23 August 2015, again at the lovely campus of Eastbourne College. The school, the bursar, the staff and the Headmaster continue to make us feel welcome. Students have told us repeatedly that they like being in the middle of town, with easy access to banks, shops and ice-cream parlours! Several have been known to jog along the seafront in the early morning, and brave ones go swimming in the sea.

We have taken on board a lot of the suggestions from the feedback sent in after the 2014 course, and we are delighted to announce that we will be staging our non-residential course, Mini-AIMS, in London on 11-12 April 2015.

For the first time, the Mini-AIMS course will include a choral element as well as the usual solo classes. The idea is to really give a taster of what the summer course is all about, so if you are new to AIMS, do consider this as a way of getting to know the team. More details can be found on page 20 of this brochure. Do book early as we have a limited number of spaces on this course.

Sunday 12 April 2015 will also be our Audition Day for the summer course. It is not obligatory to audition, but we urge you to book an audition if you are interested in taking part in any of the staged and semi-staged opera scenes. The auditions will also determine who gets selected for our Celebrity Masterclass, as well as all the solos in the various ensemble and choral concerts. We usually manage to find something for everyone who auditions, so it is really worth considering. Taking part in the performances really adds to the AIMS experience.

We also want to encourage singers who are in further education or on the verge of a singing career to come and audition for a bursary. So many of our past students have said how helpful the AIMS week is, not only for gaining performance experience, but also for the networking opportunities. At AIMS you will be working with numerous tutors and music professionals, many of whom will be able to help you along your career path.

As always, if you have any questions not answered here, or if you just want to find out a bit more about AIMS, you can contact our Administrator, Antonia Hyatt. Equally, do have a look at our website, the address of which is at the bottom of each page of this brochure.

‘You have done something very special in reaching out to such a wide spectrum of singers of all tastes, abilities and ages. Most important is the warmth and friendship fuelled within such a week together.’

WHAT IS IT?

AIMS International Music School offers a week of fantastic singing classes, performance opportunities, along with concerts and social events. We usually have around 200 students with 70 staff (tutors and house pianists).

Our Tutors bring a wealth of international performing and teaching experience with them and our House Pianists are drawn from the cream of the country’s professional accompanists at British Conservatoires and Opera Houses. Biographies can be found on our website.

As an AIMS singing student, you can choose to enrol on either the Solo or the Choral course. However, you may like to consider opting for our Crossover course, allowing you to choose a mixture of classes from each. This is becoming an increasingly popular option.

We also offer a course specifically for Piano Accompanists, with timetables tailored to specific areas of interest.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Our SOLO course is aimed at singers of all ages (18 plus). This could be young professionals on the threshold of a career, students at music colleges, amateurs of ‘semi-pro’ standard and singers with a little less experience, but a desire to sing really well.

Our CHORAL course is open to all: there is no need to audition. We offer a range of choirs and vocal groups, covering a varied repertoire, catering we hope, to individual tastes. Crucially, all our choral classes culminate in performances, be it lunchtime concerts, or larger choral works with soloists and orchestra in the evenings.

The CROSSOVER course, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, offers students the chance to ‘pick and choose’. We feel this gives people an opportunity to really tailor their week with us, according to their preferences. Occasionally timetable clashes occur, but we can almost always come up with an alternative option, to the satisfaction of all!

The PIANO ACCOMPANIST course, which in 2015 will continue to be run by Terence Allbright, is a great option for established duos and pianists looking to progress to that. More information can be found on page 9.

OVERVIEW

‘Congratulations on a highly successful and well run course. Everything ran like clockwork, information and assistance was easy to access, and everyone was very friendly and supportive.’

5AIMS International Music School

www.aims.uk.com

There are four main teaching sessions per day, with lunchtime concerts and evening events as well:

07.30 - 09.00 Breakfast served in the Dining Room

08.30 - 09.00 Warm up session in the auditorium or on the lawn

09.00 - 10.30 Session 1 (this could be a solo class, a choir rehearsal, a rehearsal for a staged opera scene etc.)

10.30 - 11.00 Tea and coffee break (this is complimentary to all students.)

11.00 - 13.00 Session 2

12.30 - 14.00 Lunch served in the Dining Room

13.25 - 14.00 Lunchtime concert in the Powell Recital Room

14.10 - 16.00 Session 3

16.00 - 16.30 Tea and coffee break

16.30 - 18.30 Session 4

18.00 - 19.15 Dinner served in the Dining Room

19.45 Evening concert and/or social event(s)

In addition to the timetabled classes, all students are welcome to observe any class. There are also several ‘drop-in’ sessions (such as Singing and Acting, Stagecraft etc.)

We are delighted to have one or two visiting therapists, offering various relaxation and massage sessions (Alexander Technique, Trager etc). NB these are subject to a charge, payable directly to the therapist.

PACE YOURSELF!

There are 24 daytime sessions during the week. We recommend you NOT to be timetabled for every session! You need to allow some time for your own private practice, or the various ‘drop-in’ classes, and most importantly, for a bit of relaxation. Our feedback tells us that there is a lot to be gained from visiting other singers’ classes and seeing a variety of tutors at work.

A TYPICAL DAY AT AIMS

6 AIMS International Music School

www.aims.uk.com

IN PRAISE OF ST. CECILIA

The week begins with a special guest appearance by an internationally-renowned choir in All Saints Church. Their programme will include the magnificent Hymn to St Cecilia by Benjamin Britten.

Our main AIMS Choir (in which all choral students are invited to sing) will work on both Handel’s and Purcell’s Ode to St Cecilia. We are delighted to be welcoming Robert Dean back to conduct the AIMS Choir. Robert was last with us in 2013 conducting a performance of Britten’s Spring Symphony.

It is hoped to produce a staged performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, with two different casts for each act. There will also be several other semi-staged opera scenes, performed this year in the theatre.

Smaller vocal ensembles will study works including Vaughan-Williams Serenade to Music, and Schumann Partsongs. Steven Rickards will be returning to put his unique take on some madrigals by Monteverdi and his contemporaries.

Our Early Music tutors will prepare a semi-staged performance of Schütz Seven Last Words from the Cross, performed in the same concert as our Oratorio Choir, who will study Haydn’s work of the same name, with string quartet accompaniment.

On the lighter side, there will be a performance of extracts from Ivor Novello operettas, in addition to our ever-popular Parlour Music, Cabaret and Music Theatre offerings.

And for your entertainment…

· Lunchtime recitals every day

· Tutors’ concert

· Celebrity Masterclass with the Director of the National Opera Studio, Kathryn Harries

· And back by popular demand: The Barn Dance

SOME HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2015

‘When I signed up, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. I was right to take the risk because the week was fantastic.’

‘Fabulous week at AIMS, but then it always is! Lovely to see old friends and meet new ones, and share in this life-enhancing musical experience.’

7AIMS International Music School

www.aims.uk.com

SOLO COURSE

All students enrolled on the SOLO course are offered three sessions of Vocal Technique. You can then choose three of the following classes (again, all covering three sessions in the week each):

· Opera Arias · Oratorio Arias · Art Song · Early Music · Cabaret

This takes your total to 12 sessions (out of the 24 available).

These classes are taken by one tutor and one accompanist (piano or in the case of Early Music, may be a lutenist and/or obbligato instrumentalist). There will be up to five students, each working with the tutors in turn. A great deal will be learned by listening to the other students, so don’t think of it solely in terms of your own particular allocation of time.

We recommend then supplementing these with one of our Ensemble Classes, to add a bit of variety to your week:

· Cabaret Ensembles · Opera Chorus · Ensembles A and B · Parlour Music · Music Theatre

These typically cover 3-5 sessions of the week, bringing your total to 15-17 sessions.

The rest of your timetable will then be determined by your participation in rehearsals for the various performances throughout the week. You may be in one of the Staged or Semi-Staged Operas, the Ivor Novelllo extracts or the Schütz Seven Last Words from the Cross. This is dependent on the outcome of the auditions on Sunday 12 April in London (see page 14) and rehearsals will usually cover 3-6 sessions of your week.

CHORAL COURSE

All students enrolled on the CHORAL course are encouraged to sing in the main AIMS CHOIR, which is rehearsed in 4th session every day, for an evening performance on Friday 21 August 2015. This really is the pinnacle event of the week. We are thrilled to be welcoming back Robert Dean, to conduct both Handel’s Ode to St Cecilia and Purcell’s 1692 Ode “Hail bright Cecilia”.

You can then choose one or more of the following classes, all of which culminate in a performance towards the end of the week, in either a lunchtime or evening concert:

· Oratorio Choir (rehearsed in 2nd session every day) · Italian Madrigals (rehearsed in 1st session, three mornings of the week) · Karl Jenkins Motets (rehearsed in 1st session, three mornings of the week)· Compline Choir (rehearsed in 3rd session, Monday to Wednesday)· Ivor Novello Choruses (rehearsed in 3rd session, Monday to Thursday)*

*As you will see, there is one clash this year; both Ivor Novello Choruses and Compline Choir are rehearsed in third session. Unfortunately it is impossible to avoid the odd timetable clash, but we hope that because these two classes are so different, most students wouldn’t want to necessarily do both.

As well as these choral classes, we will be running the hugely popular, Choral Vocal Technique class, run by Penny Jenkins. This is a wonderful opportunity to ‘have a go’ at a solo song, as well as a chance to pick up invaluable singing tips.

To enrich your timetable even more, we have several drop-in classes available, which you can sign up for once here in Eastbourne. Please see page 13 for details of these. And of course all choral students are encouraged to observe any classes going on around the campus.

CROSSOVER COURSE

It is possible to ‘do a bit of both’. You can choose two or three classes from the SOLO list (pages 10-11) and two or three classes from the CHORAL list (page 12). You will have your timetable prepared especially for you, which may involve some further discussion with the AIMS office. Anything is possible (in theory!). It is particularly feasible to take part in either of the Vocal Ensembles (A and B), Parlour Music and Cabaret Ensembles, alongside some solo classes. Indicate your preferences and we will contact you if there is a problem.

‘The technical input we get always hits the spot. We hear so many singers’ voices get transformed and everyone is so encouraging, kind and patient.’

PIANO ACCOMPANISTS COURSE

We are delighted to announce that Terence Allbright will be running this course in 2015. We welcome pianists who wish to work with singers, as well as pianists who already have partnerships in place.

The course is very much tailored to individual needs: you may be following a particular singer throughout their week, or you may be partnered with different singers, according to your preference and areas of interest. The aim is to produce an individual timetable for each pianist, involving classes with singers, performance opportunities and some group piano classes with Terence Allbright & Eugene Asti.

In 1st session, Terence Allbright will take a class (without singers) on technical issues in Piano Accompaniment. Group Activity also takes place in 4th session with the tutors choosing the topic. Singers are encouraged to attend with their pianists wherever possible. There will also be one or two ‘house’ singers expressly in this session who will be on hand to work with the student pianists. In 2015, the repertoire theme will be songs by Mozart and Beethoven.

At the end of the week, there is an Informal Concert (on the Saturday afternoon), in which all Piano Accompanist students will have a chance to perform.

SOLO CLASSES

VOCAL TECHNIQUE – code: VT Offered to all solo singers, this covers three sessions in the week, with the same tutor. Classes will focus on the technical aspects of singing and breathing. Bring any music that you are working on.

Choose THREE classes from the following:

OPERA ARIAS – code: OP Three arias from opera. They can be from any period, but we ask that you submit your choices in advance (by May 31 2015) so that timetabling can be managed effectively.

ORATORIO ARIAS – code: OR Three arias from Oratorio. Again, we ask that you submit your choices by May 31 2015.

NB in both the Opera and Oratorio classes, we welcome students to work on duets as well. Please specify the name of your partner when you submit your song choices.

ART SONG – code: AS Three songs (such as Lieder, Art Song, French Mélodies etc). Song choices by May 31 2015 please. It is also possible to study songs composed within the past 30 years in a special Contemporary Song class with Gregory Rose (please indicate if you are interested in taking part). We also encourage you to consider studying a song with string obbligato, as we will have visiting instrumentalists available this year. Please contact Antonia for a list of suggested repertoire.

EARLY MUSIC – code: EM Three songs/arias composed up to 1759 (including Bach & Handel), which can include Lutesongs, Arias with instrumental obbligato and other Baroque items.

CABARET – code: CAB Students on this course can bring cabaret numbers, popular song as well as selections from operetta, musical comedy and show songs. This class is led by Morag McLaren and Hilary Fisher, who will encourage appropriate movement and dance. Therefore it is important to bring pieces prepared from memory for this class. The theme for 2015 is ‘If music be the food of love or the love of food’, to be interpreted however you like! All singers in the class are encouraged to take part in the Cabaret Ensembles class.

‘It’s really great to be able to choose what we want to do and have such personalised timetables.’

CLASSES

‘As the week progressed, it was nice to know we all shared the same vocal issues.’

ENSEMBLE CLASSES

CABARET ENSEMBLES – code: Cab Ens This is integrated into the Saturday Night Cabaret. Performers learn two items in advance from memory, which will be staged and choreographed by our tutors Richard Wilkins and Penny Jenkins. In 2015 these will be SSA arrangements of two favourites: the title song from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music and from West End hit, Mamma Mia, Thank You For The Music.

OPERA CHORUS – code: Op Ch There will be a need for an SATB chorus in two of the fully staged opera scenes. Please indicate if you would like to be in either of these. You do not have to audition for a chorus role.

VOCAL ENSEMBLES – codes: EA and EB Works for SATB and SSA voices, ranging from straightforward to advanced. There will be two different groups:

A) studying with John Hancorn Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music (O.U.P. Oxford Choral Music)

B) studying with Richard Wilkins Schumann Romantic Partsongs for SSA Volume 2 (Barn End Press see advert on page 22).

PARLOUR MUSIC – code: P This enjoyably humorous class – coached this year by Terry Saunders and Richard Wilkins – rediscovers the fragrant byways of late 19th century and early 20th century song, from the Parlour, Drawing Room, and the Music Hall, but not forgetting Gilbert and Sullivan. Some ensembles for the full group are featured alongside solos and duets. Music is sent out in advance so please apply early!

MUSIC THEATRE – code: MT This will be run similarly to the way it worked in 2014. It will be led by Robert Marsden, Bryan Husband and Jan Winstone, and will work in one session per day. A choreographed and staged 25-minute show, drawing on the modern musical and music theatre pieces, will be prepared for performance at the end of the week. Be prepared to train like an athlete, wear loose clothing and dance shoes, and have a real fun-filled week. Main roles will be cast from the auditions on Sunday 12 April 2015 (see page 14 for more details). It is hoped that there will be some chorus roles too.

STAGECRAFT – code: ST Opera DirectorsTaken by our Opera Directors, these classes cover various aspects of acting technique. They are lively, with lots of participation for all. Specific themes will be covered – see sign-up sheets once you are here in Eastbourne.

CLASSES

14 AIMS International Music School

Want to have the opportunity of a Solo Role in one of the performances? Want to be considered for the Celebrity Masterclass? Want to apply for a grant from our Bursary Fund? Then you will need to book an audition.

SOLO ROLES

It is not obligatory to audition for AIMS, however we encourage you to consider it. One of the strengths of AIMS is the opportunity to work with and perform with other singers. There are usually enough parts in the various performances to give every person who auditions something to sing. These could be in the various Staged and Semi-Staged opera scenes, the music theatre or cabaret performances, solos in the choral concerts and many more.

CELEBRITY MASTERCLASS

Advanced singers have the opportunity to audition for specialist coaching in the Celebrity Masterclass. We are delighted to be welcoming the Director of the National Opera Studio, soprano Kathryn Harries, on Wednesday 19 August 2015.

POINTS TO NOTE:

· We understand that it is not always feasible for all students to attend the audition day, for example, International Students. If you wish to be considered, please help us by sending in a good quality recording (either DVD or a website URL link), 2 photographs and a CV.

· If you are applying after the audition day (Sunday 12 April 2015) it is still possible to be considered, but please understand that soon after the audition date, most main roles will be allocated. Please email [email protected] if this applies to you.

· More information about what is required at the auditions can be found on our website.

AUDITIONS

‘Still feeling goosebumpy recalling how suddenly in the middle of yesterday’s extremely powerful staged opera extract from Rimsky Korsakov’s ‘Mozart and Salieri’ (not an opera I’d heard of before) suddenly we were surrounded by the opening of Mozart’s Requiem sung by a pop-up choir seated throughout the audience. It really was something I will never forget..’

15AIMS International Music School

www.aims.uk.com

‘The staged opera scene I took part in was definitely the highlight of my week.’

THE AIMS BURSARY FUND

The AIMS Bursary Fund (charity no. 1123905) offers financial help to deserving young singers in further education, or on the verge of a singing career. Eligible students can apply for financial help towards course fees (up to 50%, depending on funds available). We are extremely grateful to our donors and sponsors, who over the years, have helped to fund places for over 200 students.

DONATING TO THE BURSARY FUND

We welcome any contribution, however small, to the AIMS Bursary Fund. Our target is to raise £6,000 per year.

As well as some larger one-off donations, we have a number of people who regularly donate, either by Direct Debit, or via company payroll giving schemes. If you can consider a regular donation of just £10 per month to the AIMS Bursary Fund, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Antonia Hyatt for more information.

London: 11-12 April 2015

WHAT IS IT?

Mini-AIMS is our non-residential ‘taster’ version of the main singing summer school. As well as moving to a new London venue in 2015, we are delighted to be running a Choral course for the first time, as well as classes for Solo singers. Why not make a weekend of it?

As with the summer course, at Mini-AIMS we encourage students to observe other classes, and there will be one session each day of our most popular ‘drop-in’ class from the summer course: Choral Vocal Technique. Each day will conclude with a free student concert, with items chosen from the day’s classes. Students are encouraged to invite friends and family along.

WHERE IS IT HELD?

St Gabriel’s Halls, Pimlico, London SW1V 3AA Located approximately 10 minutes walking distance from both Victoria and Pimlico Underground stations, on Glasgow Terrace, just off Lupus Street. Local buses (24, 360, C10) run frequently along Lupus Street and the venue is also within walking distance of Victoria Coach Station.

We will be providing a Tea-Bar selling light refreshments, drinks and snacks throughout the day. You are welcome to bring your own packed-lunch or pop out to one of the numerous cafés and shops in the area.

Solo singers: Bring two pieces* to work on for each day, chosen from Opera, Oratorio, Art Song and The Lighter Side (eg. G&S, Operetta, Music Theatre or Cabaret songs). In your other two sessions you are free to choose which classes to observe. You are advised to learn pieces from memory if you wish to be considered for the student concert at the end of each day.

*Please help us to timetable effectively by sending in your song choices for Mini-AIMS by 28 February 2015

‘I felt that the tutors were really happy to be here and truly enjoyed teaching, whatever the level of the singer.’

MINI-AIMS

Choral singers: You will spend Sessions 1, 2 and 4 studying set works (details below). In Session 3, you will be able to choose between observing one of the solo classes or taking part in the Choral Vocal Technique drop-in class. This is an ideal opportunity to ‘have a go’ at a solo piece, so do consider bringing something with you. A selection of the choral pieces studied will be performed in the student concert at the end of the day, alongside solo items chosen from the day’s classes.

Saturday 11 April 2015: Conducted by Tim Brown Set work: Great Choruses from Great Oratorios (Novello, edited by Brian Kay)

Sunday 12 April 2015: Conducted by Nigel Perrin Set work: European Sacred Music (OUP, edited by John Rutter)

Both works will be available to hire at the course for a small charge.

FEES:

£190 for the two days, or £100 for one day.

Cancellation policy: No refunds will be made on cancellations after 1 March 2015. Refunds prior to that date will be subject to an administration charge of £25.
