Foreword by Overall Chairperson
Dear Wonderful People,
With enormous excitement and utmost pleasure, I would like to welcome
you all to the 31st EAMSC- 2018, Nepal. A cool insight to the diverse
culture and hospitality in the lap of Himalayas; a country of Mount
Everest, Lord Buddha, Brave Gurkha’s, diverse culture and heritage, city
of temples, and a common garden of peace and harmony.
You will be staying in this small yet beautiful country enjoying different food and culture, bonding new
friendship, exploring nature and heritages and learning something important about the theme of our
conference “Maternal and Neonatal Health”. No matter how much we advance in medicine and research, a
woman has to give birth to a child- a divine power women are gifted with. Even though we have advanced
methods of maternal care like antenatal care visits, vitamins, iron, calcium, precautions with diseases and
delivery methods like vacuum delivery, caesarian section, test tube baby etc., still every pregnancy is at
risk. Every new born starve to get that first gasp of breath. No matter how well trained and experienced
you are, you will hold your breath to listen that first cry of the baby and see the very smile on the mother’s
face forgetting all the pain she went through. I think we all need to know about this fact and learn about
this never ending process.
In this conference, we will be learning about this magical process of growing from a single cell into a
complete being, the skills and techniques, new inventions, risks associated with it and challenges in the
coming days. The conference will be a different experience for you as we are working for it, days and
night to make it a wonderful program. I am thankful to AMSA family for providing us this opportunity to
host you. We will stand strong on your faith on us.
Finally, it would be pleasure to see all the cheerful and enthusiastic people in our country to make this pro-
gram a successful one with your active participation.
Warmest Regards,
Dr. Santosh Upadhyaya

Foreword by Regional Chairperson
Dear delegates,
Namaste
It’s my pleasure to say Hello! as the Regional Chairperson of AMSA Nepal.
It’s been quite a long time that I have been involved in activities of AMSA
Nepal. AMSA Nepal has been conducting various activities and is one of the
leading organization that has been continuously working in different health
related issues.
Although it’s a first experience for our country to organize EAMSC but I can assure you that, with the experi-
ence that our delegates have during their participation in international conferences of AMSA, we will leave no
stone unturned to make this venture a successful one.
As the theme for EAMSC 2018 Nepal is “Maternal and neonatal health”, we will be having various interactive
classes regarding this issue. I hope at the end of the conference you all will have broader perspective regarding
the various aspects of maternal and neonatal health. Poor health of mother and neonate is the common scenario
faced by most of the Asian countries, so by the end of the program all the delegates will have ideas that would
help in the upliftment of health issues regarding mother and child.
We all know that Nepal is a country which is blessed with natural scenicbeauty. For all the participants,
it’sgoing to be a new experience, you will have many wonderful memories which you aregoing tocherish
throughout your life. As a delegate, you will recognize three themes of AMSA- Action, Friendship, and
knowledge-without a word. Looking forward to see you in Nepal.
Warmest Regards,
Dr. Sahil Thapaliya

Introduction to EAMSC-2018
EAMSC is a biannual conference hosted by various cities around East Asia. At its inception, it aims to in-
spire delegates to become active in the amelioration of global healthcare problems through networking
with other medical students from the East Asian region. More recently, it has expanded to involve dele-
gates from all AMSA-International chapters allowing the exchange of ideas, knowledge and cultural un-
derstanding.
The EAMSC continues to inspire medical students to analyze global health issues more closely and to uti-
lize the role of medical students in the promotion of public health. It challenges students to think beyond
what is learnt at university through various academic and cultural activities which explore a nominated
conference theme.
East-Asian Medical Students' Conference (EAMSC) 2018 Nepal "Maternal and Neonatal Health":
EAMSC 2018 is being held in Nepal, hosted by AMSA-Nepal. Around 400 medical students from Asia
and Asia-pacific will be attending the program. The program will allow the exchange of ideas, knowledge
and cultural understanding between the participating members. The EAMSC held in Nepal on 2018 will
take on the maternal and child health as its main theme.
Being a mother is the happiest moment for any women and her family. But with conception and pregnancy
that follows, exposes mothers to a lot of hazards and risks. Thus, even coming to this modern era of tech-
nology, majority of birthing are traditional in practice especially in developing country like Nepal.
Maternal health is the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. It encom-
passes the health care dimensions of family planning, preconception, prenatal, and postnatal care in order
to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. Majority of death of mothers during pregnancy is due to un-
safe abortion, infection, severe bleeding, labor complication; which all can be avoided. Thus, even in this
present day, maternal health remains a hot topic. So, as safe motherhood is a fundamental right, we being
medical students need to contribute to it. Many further topics of maternal health can be addressed such as
Safe motherhood
Family planning
Abortion care

Qualifications
Food : Nepalese Cuisine combines a range of ingredients,
techniques and characteristics from its neighboring countries with its
own gastronomic history having “daal bhat” as the primary food. Set
against the backdrop of the Himalayas, the people of Nepal have
many different backgrounds and ethnicities, and this multitude of
influences is reflected within the country’s cuisine. Nepalese dishes
are generally healthier than most other South Asian cuisine, relying
less on using fats and more on chunky vegetables, lean meats, pickled
ingredients and salads. Nepal’s geographical setting, has maintained a
focus on using locally grown produce “Daal Bhaat”.
Mo:mo are usually accompanied by one or two dips, often with a
tomato base or fermented vegetables. Condiments in Nepal are
sometimes quite spicy, and often contain raw chili and garlic. Similar
to the Gyoza found in Japan, Mo:mo are also consumed in parts of
India, Bhutan and Tibet, and are a very popular snack. There are some
interesting variants of Mo:mo, with fillings involving cheese (paneer
or chhurpi) or potato or chicken.
Sel roti is a cross between a doughnut and a bagel, but sel roti is
actually made of rice flour and is like no other bread in the world.
A crispy and sweet outer surface gives way to a puffy and
soft-textured dough.
If Nepal had a national dish,“Daal Bhaat” would be it.
Mo:mo are Nepal’s version of dumplings.
All Nepalese Festivals complete `with ‘SEL ROTI.’

EVENTS
Keynote Lectures Internationally, increasing attention has been concen-
trated on reducing maternal and neonatal mortality,
acknowledging the tragedy of not preventing these
avoidable deaths, which include 36,000 women annu-
ally in the 12 countries in the region of East and
South-East Asia (ESEA). The lectures will be pre-
sented by professors and experts on the topics related
to maternal and neonatal health which include epide-
miology, statistics, problems of maternal and neonatal
health and their management. The participants are
expected to become well aware of the various aspects
of maternal and child health, their complications and
management. This gives an overview of the situation
of maternal and newborn health in the Asia region,
with a focus on mortality and the interventions re-
quired to save women’s and newborn’s lives. This
differs in some aspects from a discussion of general
maternal and newborn health program which may be
implemented in more developed countries.
Scientific Paper Presentation
The participants will present research conducted on
topics related to “Maternal and Neonatal Health”. The
abstracts will be collected from each chapter. Top 8
papers will be presented in the conference and the
best will be awarded based on selection by the judges.
The research articles will be published in the journal
of AMSA (J-AMSA).
Poster presentation Posters based on scientific research will be presented.
As in scientific paper presentation, poster will be
evaluated and top 8 posters will be presented in the
conference. During the conference, the posters will be
evaluated by the panel of judges and the best poster
will be awarded. Scientific paper and poster competi-
tion is expected to gather studies from different re-
gions of the world at one place and motivate the stu-
dents to get involved in research activities.

Photography competition
Capturing memories and learning through, it is one
of the best ideas. Delegates from different chapters
will have to submit their photographs related to the
theme. Top 50 photographs will be selected by the
OCs and judges and they will be displayed during
the conference. The best photograph will be awarded
based on voting by the delegates. All the delegates
can participate and one participant cannot submit
more than 2 photographs.
Academic workshop
We will be trained by professionals to enhance med-
ical skills in managing maternal and neonatal health
related problems. Participants are expected to en-
hance their knowledge on maternal and neonatal
health. There will be a plenary session for problem
solving in collaboration with WHO. Each group will
be given a case to handle and they will have to pro-
vide a plan of management. There will be mediators
to guide participants in every group. The best group
will be awarded.
Community service
Female Community Health Volunteer (FCHVs)
have been the spearhead for the progress Nepal has
made in the field of Maternal Health. We will have
active interaction with FCHVs of the community.
We will be assessing the status of individual houses.
We will head towards health posts and sub health
posts around Kathmandu valley and neighboring vil-
lages. Interaction programs will be conducted to
share ideas and also learn from about the valuable
experiences of FCHVs regarding the challenges,
problems and their probable solutions. Also, the del-
egates can share their ideas, which may even help
the FCHVs to view the problem from an entirely
different perspective. Through FCHVs the delegates
can get a peek about Nepalese community and learn
about the strength, weakness, challenges and prob-
lems that the community members face every day.
Also, the delegates will come to learn about the local
health system at the community level runs.

Cultural Workshop
The aim of the cultural workshop is to introduce the
delegates to the unique and diverse variety of
Nepalese tradition and culture. The delegates can try
some famous Nepalese cuisines, some famous
Nepalese fast foods, engage themselves in Nepalese
traditional handicrafts and try Nepalese traditional
costumes of various ethnic groups (there are 113 different ethnic groups in Nepal who speak 93 different lan-
guages). Delegates will be taught different traditional skills like Thanka painting, Mo:Mo, Traditional Nepa-
lese Mud – Pottery, Traditional dance and music.
Culture Booth:
The delegates from different chapters of AMSA would be
given opportunity to showcase the culture and tradition of
their country. The delegates can dress up in their traditional
costumes and share their traditional drinks and cuisines, arts
and crafts. It will be a great cultural exchange program. You
will travel all around the world in the small confined space
of the cultural booth.
Cultural Performances:
Legends state that dances in this country originated in the abode
of Lord Shiva — the Himalayas, where he performed
the tandava dance. This indicates that dance traditions of Nepal
are very ancient and unique. With altitudes and ethnicity, the
dances of Nepal slightly change in style as well as in
the costumes.
Accompanying music and musical instruments change in tune
with the themes, which revolve around topics like harvesting of
crops, marriage rites, war stories, a lonely girl’s yearning for her love, and several other themes and stories
from everyday life in the villages. In the opening and the closing ceremonies; the delegates will be greeted
with Nepalese traditional dances and songs which will give you insight to traditional Nepalese culture.

OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
Health care services in Nepal are provided by both the public and the private sector. Different health posts,
primary health centers, district, regional and tertiary hospitals are the centers which provide health facilities.
The system was first introduced according to the General Health Plan in 1956 and has subsequently been ex-
panded with a focus on primary health care and the development of a comprehensive network-like Health
System; the most basic unit is a Health Post in each Village Development Committee area. The Government
recently introduced a Health Policy encouraging the private sector to invest in the education of health work-
ers and in providing quality health services. As a result, several private health institutions have been founded
and are expected to contribute to the development of the human resources required by Nepal.
OUR MEDICAL EDUCATION
There are many medical schools in Nepal offering a course length of about 5 and half years but this period
can differ depending on each university. The education system is divided into two tiers. The 1st two years
comprise of a basic science education while the latter 3 and half years are focused on clinical practice.
GEOGRAPHY
Nepal is located in South Asia, between China in the north and India in the south, east and west. The total
land area is 147,181 sq. km. Nepal falls in the temperate zone north of the Tropic of Cancer. Nepal’s ecolog-
ical zones run east to west about 800 km along its Himalayan axis, 150 to 250 km north to south, and is ver-
tically intersected by numerous river systems. The country can be divided into three main geographical re-
gions: Himalayan region, mid hill region and Terai region. The highest point in the country is Mt. Everest
(8,848 m) while the lowest point is in the Terai plains of Kechana Kalan in Jhapa (60 m).
TRANSPORTATION
Kathmandu has easy way of transportation through cab/taxi. Taxi rates are standardized. A standardized taxi
meter, located on the front part of the deck calculates the fare by distance. You can catch the cab on road or
call by some app (eddy cab).
Public transportation is also available through low line busses, micro busses or electric three-wheeler in all
the routes. However it might be difficult for people visiting Nepal for the first time to get the hang of the var-
ious routes provided by the public transport vehicles.

During the stay of EAMSC-2018, we recommend delegates to purchase SIM card, which will give you
access to mobile internet and stay in contact with your friends and group manager. There are two telecom
companies in Nepal, NTC and Ncell. The detail information about the sim cards will be provided by the
GMs after registration is closed.
Good to know facts
When visiting monasteries or temples, avoid smoking and remove your shoes, hat and leather items before
you enter. Note that some temples are closed for non-Hindu.
Electricity
Electricity is 220v/50 cycles. Sockets usually take plugs with three pins sometimes two pins the small vari-
ety and sometimes the large ones. It is advised to carry travel adapter for the stay.
Weather
Climate of Nepal varies from one place to another in accordance with the geographical features. In the
north summers are cool and winters severely cold, while in the south summers are tropical and winters are
mild. Nepal has five major seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter. An average temperature
drop of 6°C occurs for every 1,000 m gain in altitude. The valley of Kathmandu has a pleasant climate
with winter temperature of 2°C – 12°C.
Money
Paper notes are in the denominations of rupees 5, 10, 20, 50, 100,500 1000. While the coins are available
in rupees 1 & 2 denominations.
An interesting fact is that there is no seasonal
constraint on traveling in and through Nepal.
