Convention ThemeDear AGRM Members and Friends,

The theme for The AGRM 2017 Annual Convention is“Strong Tower,” in reference to Psalm 61:3:

“For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy.”

Every day, AGRM member missions provide that kind ofshelter for tens of thousands of people who are fighting for their lives to survive, constantly under attack from theenemy of their souls. They need a sanctuary with a vantagepoint to defend their physical and spiritual lives.

To minister from a position of strength, we also need a placeof refuge—a bastion where we can go to regroup, rearm, and strategize. In the shadow of Dallas’ Reunion Tower,we’ll come together again to find cover and strength in God,our strong tower. Rally through training, inspiration, andencouragement, and be more convinced than ever that the battle belongs to the Lord.

I look forward to seeing you and your team in Dallas for what is shaping up to be an intriguinglyunconventional convention.

John Ashmen, AGRM President

““

To minister from aposition of strength,we also need aplace of refuge—abastion where wecan go to regroup, rearm, andstrategize.

About AGRM’s ConventionsIt’s widely acknowledged in Christian ministry circles thatAGRM’s Annual Convention is one of the most enjoyable, beneficial, and professionally run events of its kind. (Ourreputation is such that other associations have even sent staffto our events to see how we do things.) This value propositionis confirmed by survey statistics: Year after year, more than 95percent of attendees say they are reasonably sure or definitelysure they got their money’s worth!

Some commentsfrom members:

“I’ve attended a dozen or moreconventions in my previous

career with two differentFortune 500 companies.

Your convention is on parwith all of them, and in some

ways, even better.”

“Fifty percent of what I’velearned about rescue

mission ministry I pickedup on the job. The other50 percent I learned at

AGRM’s yearlyconventions.”

“Jesus walks the halls and fills therooms at these annual events.”

Who Attends AGRMs Annual Conventions?Years ago, AGRM’s Annual Conventions were the events that brought together mainly mission“superintendents” and directors to confer and compare notes. Today, our yearly events are theenergetic “gathering place” for those whose ministry focus is pouring out God’s blessings andgrace on poor and powerless people. Whether you are a case manager, fundraiser, president & CEO, thrift store operator, finance director, program supervisor, marketing specialist, boardmember, or faithful volunteer, you’ll find multiple elements at an AGRM convention for you. Many executive leaders even see the convention as the perfect opportunity to catapult thecareers of promising new employees and prospective future leaders.

“There are a bunch of other associationsout there that can learn a lot from y’all

on how to do great meetings.”

“I go home refreshed andrecharged every time I attend

a convention that AGRMholds. Inspiration and training

like this is so important. It’s one budget line item

I refuse to cut.”

New CEOs “Boot Camp” Those just starting out in their role as a rescue mission CEO (e.g., executivedirector, president, etc.)—or those needing a relevant refresher—can get the tools to be abundantly successful through this four-hour intensive workshop. Learn insightsborne of experience from a team of veteranCEOs. Find out how to avoid the six pitfallsthat new (or weary) leaders often succumbto. This Boot Camp will lay the groundworkfor all of the convention seminars that willfollow over the next four days.

Interactive Prayer Room Experience the presence of the Lord in aunique way as you enter this quiet place and ponder His love, sacrifice, blessings, protection, guidance, and more. At variousstations, Scripture will be brought to lifeusing art, music, illustrations, and otherelements. The Interactive Prayer Room will be open around the clock. Counselorswill be available in the room or locatednearby.

TED Talk-Style Sessions Rather than having one 40-minute message, some of our general sessions will have two 20-minute, Bible-based presentationsdealing with pertinent issues relevant toculture, current events, or rescue missionministry. The spiritual element that ourgeneral sessions are known for will still be there, but not in the traditional style. The format will provide more variety andopportunities to discover new perspectivesand truths about ourselves and our settings.

Chaplain Homilies The AGRM network is blessed withnumerous rescue mission chaplains who can rightly divide the Word of Truth.Throughout the convention, we will hearfrom several of them as they give us their testimonies and insights. Their

words will be uplifting and encouraging, and you’ll know that rescue missions across North America are in good hands.

Mission Tours In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, we areoffering transportation and formal tours to four of our member facilities. On theopening day, we will spend time in Dallas atUnion Gospel Mission and then Dallas LIFE.On the closing day, the tour bus will headwest a few miles to Fort Worth to seeUnion Gospel Mission of Tarrant County(where the Same Kind of Different as Mestory unfolded) and Beautiful FeetMinistries. Each one of these missions is unique in its facilities, set-up, andoperations. Touring all four missions will be like a convention in itself.

Worship Time We’ve selected one of the general sessionsto concentrate almost entirely on worship, utilizing music, Bible readings, and testi-monies to draw us closer together and closer to our heavenly Father.

Chisholm Trail Dinner One evening we will have a cattle-drivestyle chuck-wagon dinner in our ExhibitHall. It will be a fun atmosphere with some great music and grub. Stop by the“campfire” to hear some stories and let the ki yi yippees flow.

Exhibit Hall Once again our Exhibit Hall promises to be booming with a variety of businesses tohelp your mission succeed. Last year webroke our own record: 75 rescue-missionrelevant businesses were represented, including 20 new to AGRM. We expectanother record breaker this year, and with our larger Exhibit Hall space, you’llhave more room to connect, plan, andfellowship.

What Is AGRM’s Education Worth? Each year, AGRM’s Annual Conventiontypically has scores of seminars and workshops. In the past, attendees could receive continuing

education credits (CEUs) for selected classes.

Starting with the 2017 Annual Convention, AGRM islaunching a nanodegree program in partnership withCairn University in Pennsylvania. Sometimes referred toas micro-credentialing, a nanodegree program is a courseof study that can be completed in less than 12 monthsthrough classroom participation and online learning. The aim of the program is to teach basic skills throughthe most qualified instructors, using the most relevantmaterials.

Participants who complete a nanodegree course earn a“badge” that distinguishes them as having attained corecompetencies in a specific vocational area (such as men’sshelter management, life skills counseling, etc.), verifyingtheir qualifications to undertake at least entry levelpositions in key roles at rescue missions.

The specific nanodegrees AGRM will offer, starting withthe 2017 Annual Convention, will be announced in detailin early January.
