Chandigarh is a well-planned city in India, with architecture which is
world-renowned, and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. As the
common capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union
Territory, Chandigarh is a prestigious city. The face of modern India,
Chandigarh, is the manifestation of a dream that Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru
envisaged and French architect Le Corbusier executed. Serenity and
a city are two diametrically opposite concepts, which however, get
belied in the 'City Beautiful'. Chandigarh is a rare epitome of
modernization co-existing with nature's preservation. It is here that the
trees and plants are as much a part of the construction plans as the
buildings and the roads. India’s first planned city, is a rich, prosperous,
spic and span, green city rightly called “THE CITY BEAUTIFUL”.
Chandigarh enjoys an extreme climate with hot summers and chilly
winters, however the month of March brings pleasant weather. City is
well connected through Air, Rail and Road routes and is one of the
most visited cities by National and International travelers. Rock
garden, Rose garden, Sukhna lake, City center and Capitol Complex
are few attraction points of the city beautiful.
The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh
Kairon, the erstwhile Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished
medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab,
supported by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru,
who inaugurated the institute in 1962. The 2200 bedded hospital
attached to the institute is named the “Nehru Hospital”. The Institute
was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. After the
reorganization of the state, the administrative control of the institute
passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966. The
Institute was declared as the ‘Institute of Excellence’ and became an
autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967, functioning
under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Institute imparts doctoral and post-doctoral training to medical and
non-medical graduates in 52 medical and surgical specialties in terms
of its residency programs leading to MD, MS, DM, MCh and PhD
degrees. The National Institute of Paramedical Sciences and National
Institute of Nursing Education are associated training institutes
imparting BSc (Medical Laboratory Technology), MSc (Medical
Laboratory Technology) and BSc and MSc Nursing degrees. Nehru
Hospital attached to the Institute is a tertiary care hospital catering to
approximately 10,000 patients in the outdoor clinics and 4000-5000 in
the emergency everyday besides indoor patients from all over India
and abroad also.

Places of interest in and around Chandigarh
In the contemporary times, tourism in Chandigarh is on peak. Nature
lovers from different parts of the country flock here to view the
beautiful theme gardens of the city. The reservoir of places to see in
Chandigarh is very large. The major sightseeing places in Chandigarh
are Rock Garden, Leisure Valley, Capitol Complex to name a few. The
Chandigarh is also known as the city of gardens as it has several
beautiful gardens like Rose Garden, Terraced Garden, Bougainvillea
garden, unique Cactus garden and nearby famous Mougal gardens
now known as Yadavindra Gardens that are attracting tourists from all
over the world. The planners of the city gifted the city with a beautiful
man-made lake for a quiet union with nature- the Sukhna Lake is a
serene water-body in the foothills of the majestic Shivalik range of hills
surrounded by lush green forest areas-the most popular tourist
attraction of Chandigarh. There are pilgrimage spots like Mansa Devi
Mandir (Goddess temple), Chandi Mandir, Kurukshetra (famous for
Geeta-Updesh from Lord Krishna to Arjuna) and Golden temple (the
holiest shrine of sikhs) in Amritsar, where people come from all over the
world to pay homage. In the list of Chandigarh nearby places, we
have some wonderful places on the hills like Parwanoo, Kasauli, Chail
and Shimla (the summer capital in British Raj also famous as the ‘Queen
of Hills’) to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Nature. Also we have
