Holy Spirit is doing here at St. Therese College. What the Spirit seems to be saying, loud and clear, is that STC is not about faith information, but rather about faith formation, and this faith formation occurs through building basic Christian community among the staff and students. And Christian community is being built—just read the student testimonies printed in this newsletter! Indeed, we are becoming ever more a community that follows the rhythm of Nazareth as we attend to the duty of the moment, whether it be in class, in prayer and liturgy, in play, in sweeping floors and doing dishes, or in looking after any of the myriad “little things” around our home.

Catherine Doherty, the foundress of Madonna House lay apostolate, said that joy is the measure of the health of a Christian community, and STC is certainly joy-filled. Needless to say, we have encountered difficulties and challenges in our journey through these past few weeks. For these we offer our thanks to God, for such is the lot of any Christian work. We should be worried if we didn’t encounter trials. But, joy has

Joy! Joy! Joy!

How is it that the patroness of missionaries should have been a

cloistered nun confined to an obscure convent in France? How is it that she, inspired with an ageless wisdom and to whom has been granted the title “Doctor of the Church”, should have died as little more than a youth? How is it that she who has touched the hearts and lives of millions in the past century, and whose name is invoked throughout the world, has accomplished such great feats by simply attending, in her life, to the littlest things with single-heartedness? It is a paradox! It is the paradox, that of the Cross—a paradox reflected in the witness of each disciple who lays down his own life to lift up his own cross and humbly follow in the footsteps of the Master.

So it was in the life of our patroness, Therese. She showed us by following the little way, by attending to the mundane, the nitty-gritty, the seemingly unimportant and inconsequential matters of daily life with great love for God, that souls are converted, the world is restored to order, and the Kingdom of God edified and made manifest. Therese, by her example, points us to another youth, Jesus, who by his years hidden away in Nazareth sanctified the humdrum and made the ordinariness of daily living—when lived with a depth of joy and love—an extraordinary thing and a sure path to holiness!

Our first month has passed at St. Therese Catholic College of Faith and Mission, and, as each day has come and gone, it has grown increasingly evident that this wonderful work of God that is STC is truly to be a “school of the little things.” Granted, we have had a succession of outstanding teachers share their wisdom with us, and while this is very important, it is not primary to what the

flourished, nevertheless. At almost any time of the day one can hear music of some kind around our building—songs of praise and worship, a guitar being strummed, someone singing happily to himself, or the sound of laughter, the best music of all! Truly, joy is one of the most evident and one of the greatest gifts we have been given at STC.

I pray that each of you, dear friends of St. Therese College, will in turn receive the blessed gift of God’s joy by what you read of our little beginnings in this our first newsletter.

St. Therese, promised: “After my death, I shall let fall a shower of roses.” Well, there is a fair-sized bouquet that’s already been gathered at STC, as you, dear friends, can no doubt see. So I say, “Keep ‘em coming, Little Flower. We’ve got our eyes fixed on heaven!”

Peace & blessings,Jim Anderson

St. Therese teaches, “I want to rejoice in whatever God gives

me in the present moment. I abandon myself to what Jesus gives me now today.”

It is beautiful to be here at St. Therese College of Faith and Mission and enter into the teachings of St. Therese who is a doctor of the church.

Her’s is my favorite spirituality−so simple yet so profound. All you need to do in life is to trust Jesus and embrace each day, each hour each minute, what is given to you now−and REJOICE IN IT, because it comes from Jesus given in love and to be received in love.

If we have an unsatisfactory meal−we try not to complain but receive it now and trust it is a love gift from God.

If we struggle and struggle in trying to pray−and finally only get to say one Our Father with a little devotion, try to rejoice and thank God for this precious gift that we were able to have even a little prayer. Jesus comes in my prayer. It is His gift now.

It is more difficult, but if I have a head-ache and feel down and sad inside, I still try to rejoice and embrace this cross now because it comes from the hand of Jesus.

We are little by little learning to trust God and it is a difficult struggle but we are learning to trust God that whatever comes in our day, our present hour, our “now”, comes from the hand of Jesus. It is a blessing. It is like Holy Communion. Jesus comes in the happening of the moment and if we receive Him in faith and trust, He gives us Himself and this is a new beautiful treasure to rejoice in right now. We have joy in this faith; joy in this gift of Jesus in this present moment.

shivering body to care for me. This is a beautiful moment because you come to me now in this situation.”

All of a sudden, I had joy and peace. I had, by His grace, surrendered my will and my plans, and He came to me in that beautiful moment that I will never forget. I have never had anything or any experience better than this. He comes in the “now experience” whenever I open my heart in complete trust.

Here at St. Therese College, I have joy and peace in each day. The students are beautiful, and I believe they are learning this great love of Jesus in that He comes to them in the sacrament of the present moment. All we need to do is trust in Him and being in Him in the call of the present moment to love.

Peace be with you,Father Clair Watrin

He loves us so much that whatever He allows to come He transforms it and makes it a vehicle after giving Himself to us. It becomes sacrament, a sacred moment, A JOYFUL NOW.

To embrace the present moment in love, faith and joy is a real death to self.

I remember one evening I was driving to an important meeting. It was winter and twenty below with a strong wind. I heard a thumping noise. Oh no, it’s a flat tire! I was upset, angry, and fearful that I would miss my important meeting. My hands kept freezing trying to change the tire in the cold wind. I became more and more frustrated, shivering in the cold. I began to realize I would not make the meeting. I prayed but to no avail: “Why don’t you help me Lord.” It was very difficult but finally I surrendered and knelt down on the highway pavement and said, “I trust in you Jesus. You have given me this situation, and it is OK. You are in charge; you can bring good out of it all. I surrender my will, my plans. All that matters is that you are here right now in my freezing hands and

When the opportunity presented itself for our daughter Janine chose to join the staff of St. Therese College for its inaugural year, our curiosity was piqued! On an overnight visit in October, we were welcomed with such warmth, by staff and students alike. We immedi-ately felt the camaraderie of this caring c o m m u n i t y and were en-veloped with a sense of peace and joy. We could also feel the excitement from this group as they embarked on a jour-ney of sharing and learning, to strengthen their faith. We would highly recommend a visit to anyone who wants to see what this college has to offer. You will surely feel the presence of Christ within.Gaston and Nicole Boulanger Grande Clairiere, Manitoba

Being at St. Therese is one of those “you had to be there!” experiences. A loving community which came together as friends in a matter of days is an understatement. The atmosphere is so much under the hand of the Holy

Spirit. Again, an unexplainable experience. I have a waiting sense of excitement and anticipation for God to reveal His plan for all of us here this year. The way the school, staff & students have come into place is a mystery! I am thrilled to be in this beautiful place of spiritual growth.

Vincent BrûléAlbertville, SK

I came to St. Therese not knowing what to expect. I was hired on as the Chief Power Engineer and I also decided to be a student in order to learn more about my faith. I have been profoundly changed by my time here and by the speakers: it was as if God was talking directly to me through the speakers. There have been challenges but I am growing through them and look forward to the rest of the year. I really enjoy the faith community [and] I am excited to become the Man of Faith that God wants me to be.

Well, I can’t believe that it’s been one month since I have arrived at St. Therese. I sensed right from the start that I was supposed to be here. We’ve had some awesome talks from some of God’s people but most of all I was moved at how God has worked in our lives and got us here together. Wow!

Heather BlanchetteSalmon Arm, BC

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can. I have already learned so much since being here. Not just head knowledge, but more importantly heart knowledge. God has brought together a wonderful group of people from all over to begin this first year at St. Therese College of Faith and Mission and I am just so thankful to be a part of it.

Laurier BlanchetteSalmon Arm, BC

I am enjoying my time at St. Therese College. The Lord has gathered many beautiful people together to nourish each other to help us grow closer to God our Father.

Nicole BrodnerRegina, SK

For me, coming here is like coming out of deep water back into the air. It is being able to breathe freely. People accept you for you no matter where you’ve come from. It’s an opportunity for me to spread my wings and fly secure in the knowledge that when I fall, God will catch me.

I know that God has called me to St. Therese but I have to say that when I came here I really didn’t know what to expect, I just knew that He wanted me to come here. So I made an act of faith and trust in Him and came over to the small town of Bruno, SK. At this point, I am still trying to discern what God wants to do with me this year but I would have to say that St. Therese Catholic College is primarily about receiving healing and love from God so that you can go back into the broken world and bring God’s healing and love to others “so that they might have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

Tristen GreensladeRochester, MN, USA

Life at St. Therese thus far has been everything between awesome and challenging. It is bound to be an adven-turous year, in light of what we have already learned and shared. Living and studying with people who share the same passion to know and

live out the truth of our faith is incredible. What an invalu-able opportunity to learn and gain the essential tools for the journey of life!

Michael WourmsBruno, SK

In the short time that I’ve spent here at St. Therese, I have felt a strong sense of safety. Safety to live the Faith; safety to talk about Jesus; safety to be myself. The atmosphere that embraces you here is overwhelming, yet a

comfort to me. St. Therese community embodies love.

God is defi nitely present here. You can sense Him in the liturgies, in our prayer meetings and see Him in changed hearts and excited smiles as we learn about Him and the Church. St. Therese College is a place that God is using to teach us how to love so we are able to spread this to the world.

Daniel CarreiroSaskatoon, SK

I love how God is work-ing in my life here at St. Therese. He is drawing me closer to Himself through prayer and through our dif-ferent classes. I am learning about my faith and am being challenged to live it out.

Chase RichardHinton, AB

It is a lot fl atter out here than in Hinton, considering the Rocky Mountains are there. But in all honesty I am glad that I came, as my immediate family has grown a number of times larger by being here.

Wow!!! St. Therese has been absolutely amazing! We have only been here for one month and I have already learned so much. I have grown in my faith and also my ability to interact with and be a part of a Catholic Community. The “teachers” are amazing! Our director has been a major blessing! Thus far everything about St. Therese has been a major blessing, I don’t expect that to change, this year or in years to follow.

Naomi SentenEdmonton, AB

Before attending St. Therese, the idea that our God is a loving God, One who is compassionate and under-standing, was a foreign con-cept to me. But through the programs and the Little Way each day, my heart is be-ing opened more and more to the One who loves me now, as I am. This journey into the Father’s heart has brought me so much joy and healing, it’s an adventure that tops all else!

Kathleen WolfeSaskatoon, SK

I came to St. Therese College of Faith and Mission so hungry, and, since being here, I have been fed in every way. The community and quality of instruction and guidance is incredible. I feel so blessed! I am looking so forward to the rest of the year in this beautiful place of faith and would recommend the program for anyone who has a desire for growth in an atmosphere of truth and love.

André RivetMorinville, AB

God is so good. He has blessed our family with the great walk of St. Therese College and the community of Bruno. The challenges my wife Angela and I had moving our family of six have been enough to handle. It is all worth being in a class of mature students who hunger for Jesus, the Church, and the “little way.” With an experi-enced staff on fi re working together to make things move as smooth and to His plan as possible. Which allows me to focus on getting past my way, and embrace “the way.”

Who am I? Who am I to be in such a place? I am so delighted to be a part of this new mission with my husband Lorne. This place clearly communicates purpose. My senses are alive and acute to the messages given by so many Christ-centered people here at the school. He has chosen me, He has chosen Lorne and I to be witnesses, to be disciples for Him. So, who am I or who are we? We are His chosen ones. We are His hands and feet. We are His beloved. Thank you to those who had a vision for the St. Therese College—you answered the call, you became His hands and feet.

Lorne StangMacklin, SK

I came to St. Therese with my wife Carolline. We could not believe the wide range of people in a group of about 30 staff and students. We are all so different but yet through something larger than life we are all connected. My wife and I came in the hope to have a better understanding of the faith and to grow stronger in our faith. We know the Lord put us in the right place.

Hello! I won’t be joining the students at St. Therese until December 1, 2007. I’m very excited and looking forward to getting there. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow in relationship with God, and live in community within the graces of His church. I desire to especially become closer in my relationship with the Holy Spirit and learn to discern and obey His leading in everyday life. St. Therese Catholic College is the movement of God in our midst, a great offering of transformation and Christian maturing to Catholics of all ages.

Greetings from the Chairman of the Board

It’s been a long hard road with many bumps and hurdles but thanks to

God’s inspiration, guidance and help the school is open and functioning well. We’ve been blessed with 20 wonderful students who are totally receptive to learning and growing in the Catholic faith and the mission God may be calling them to personally. We have also been blessed with many gifted teachers (such as Archbishop Adam Exner, Jim Murphy, Donna Donaldson, Ken Yasinski, Fr. Denis Phaneuf), many volunteers and staff not the least of whom is Jim Anderson, the inaugural director of St. Therese Catholic College of Faith and Mission, and Lorretta Hopegood, one of the directors of the soon-to-be-opening St. Therese Healing and Growth Centre.

We are also very grateful to the good donors who have supported this project

to date and gave us the “help up” we needed at the start. We wish especially to thank Mr. Pius Pfeifer and his wife Ida and family of North Battleford from the bottom of our hearts. There are many donors we wish to thank including those who have asked to remain anonymous. A more formal recognition program will be announced soon.

The Healing and Growth Centre is now starting with limited programming which will be expanded in the months to come. On behalf of my colleagues on the Board of Directors, I would like to encourage you to attend the College Grand Opening December 15, 2007. And please come up and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting as many of you as God puts in my path.

In God’s blessing,Jerry Kristian

Opening events will be webcast on the internet. Please visit www.StTherese.ca for more info.

STC Grand Opening Celebrations! Why St. Therese?

Why was St. Therese of Lisieux chosen as the patron of the new

Catholic College in Bruno?

When the Board of Directors met to-gether for Mass on Oct. 1, 2004, the inspi-ration came to name the College after St. Therese – Oct. 1 is her feast day.

There are three qualities that St. Therese exemplified that are embodied in the teachings and spiritually of the College. Despite her youth and later her suffering, St. Therese sought excel-lence in all that she did. Secondly, she is the universal patron of missionaries – hence the College is not called a “Bible School,”, but a school of “Faith and Mission.” Last, she has been declared a Doctor of the Church; her doctrine is known as “The Little Way” – doing all things with excellence for the glory of God.

Healing and Growth Center

Welcome to the St. Therese College of Faith and Mission / Healing

and Growth Centre!!

Our doors opened on Sept. 29th, 2007, and we were blessed to welcome 20 students for the opening year!! As our fi rst year begins, it is a learning adventure for both students and staff.

The thrust of the energies of the staff have been to get the school up and running over the past 4 months. So much to do in such a short time! The Holy Spirit went boldly ahead as we strove to meet deadlines!

As the school continues to become established, the Healing and Growth Centre will slowly begin to offer evening workshops of healing and times of prayer and praise for the public who want to come and receive a touch of God in their lives!

To be able to move into a life of freedom, joy and abundance, one needs to discover how he or she is living. Are you living from your “hurts” or from your “heart”? If you are living from your “hurts”, you may not be able to discover the characteristics of the “heart” that Jesus gave you.

When you are living from your “heart”, that place where God’s Spirit dwells, you are able to truly be connected to God’s guidance. Following your heart will bring you freedom and joy!!!

At St. Therese College / Healing and Growth Centre, we introduce the students to the essential components of becoming whole so as to begin to live from their “heart”. These compo-nents are: belonging to a family (our community student body), receiving and giving life (this happens as they receive life from God’s Holy Spirit), recovering from the effects of trauma

false guilt, anxiety and emotional pain. As they allow the light of Christ to come into the lies that were created as perceptions from childhood memories, they discover that the truth, which is revealed through Jesus Christ, can set them free. “If you remain in my word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”. (John 8:31-32) Once the truth is revealed, they can move into forgiveness and start living into that truth. New behavior patterns can now be experienced, and self esteem rises as they begin to live in the truth. A new found freedom in Christ is discovered. “He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)

Please continue to keep the St. Therese College / Healing Centre in your prayers! We invite you to stop by at any time and see the work that God is doing in our midst! He is an ‘awesome’ God in all that He does!!!!

God Bless!Lorretta Hopegood

(inner healing), and contributing to a community (service of ‘works of mercy’ to the people in Bruno and area). These components help our students learn who they really are. They learn to be authentic, to acknowledge and honestly confront the challenges that they face.

We are all broken. We all face wound-edness, division, isolation and oppres-sion. But people can be healed in authentic, God centered relationships. We grow in our faith through relation-ships; wounded people ‘heal’ in rela-tionships and unbelievers come to the Lord through relationships. Growth, repair, maturity and faith development are all intimately tied to loving relation-ships. People do need people to achieve wholeness in a fractured world. People need the love of Jesus through people, to recover.

The students at St. Therese College have access to the St. Therese Healing and Growth Centre. In this Centre they have the opportunity to confi dentially be listened to as they are acknowledged in their pain of lifelong fears, shame,

Blessings from Bishop LeGatt

In our world, many are looking for a sense of direction and a sense

of wholeness. This can be especially strong among young people who are faced with so many confl icting values around them as they seek the road to take in life.

The vision of St. Therese College of Faith and Mission is to offer the experience of a community of faith where young people (and others) may grow in all aspects of their spiritual life, discerning how to truly embrace God’s love in their life and how to respond to this call wholeheartedly.

May God’s blessings be upon all who are part of this community, gracing them with wisdom, charity and peace as the college takes its fi rst steps.

Most Reverend Albert LeGattBishop of Saskatoon

Pfeifer Gift: The St. Therese Facility

When I met Jerry Kristian, Andy Tahn and James McLane they

introduced the project of St. Therese College of Faith and Mission to me. I was very impressed and I said I like to participate. “Give me a week or two to analyze what I can do.” Two weeks later we met again with Chairman Jerry Kristian and Andy Tahn. I said, “You do so much. This donation is the least I can do and I am happy to do it.” They happily accepted my offer. There are many people with greater resources than myself out there who can also afford to contribute and I wish they would come forward and support St. Therese College of Faith and Mission. Much more is needed to fulfi ll the wishes and all the hard work done by the board and staff of St. Therese.

My reason for supporting this endeavor is that, not long ago, [Canada] sent missionaries, priests and sisters to

South America, India, Africa. Now look at us—we do not train enough clergy to look after ourselves. We have to import priests from Third World countries to save us and keep us afl oat. We should ask ourselves, ‘Is this the way we thank our God.’ God has rewarded us with a great standard of living and we have enjoyed great affl uence for the Christian faith, hard work and suffering our grandparents and parents did for us. They succeeded in raising many priests, sisters and missionaries.

This is why we need the St. Therese College of Faith and Mission more than ever.

God Bless,Pius Pfeifer

Pius & Ida Pfeifer - Their generous donation provided us the funds required to purchase

our 65,000 sq.ft. facility.

“I would like to love J us so much...to love him more than he has

ever been loved! My only d ire is to always

do the will of J us!”

“What off ends J us, at wounds Him to the heart, is want of

confi dence.”St. Therese in a letter

to her cousin Marie Guerin.

Our goal is to raise $2-million to help offset our costs. Student tuitions and room/board/rental fees help us to cover a very small percentage of our operating costs. We rely on God’s providence and YOUR DONATION to make up the rest of what we need.
