Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Harman KardonDVD 50. The DVD 50 is a multipurpose five-discplayer that delivers the highest level of playbackquality from a wide range of optical media for-mats. Along with conventional DVD and CDaudio discs, the DVD 50 is also compatible withCD-R and CD-RW discs, discs with HDCD®

encoding, VCD discs and discs recorded withaudio files in the MP3 format. However, theDVD 50 does more than simply play discs in thisextensive list of formats, it plays them flawlessly, and provides output signals that match thecapabilities of the latest audio and video displaytechnologies.

On the video side, the DVD 50 is one of the first5-disc changers to offer progressive scan videooutputs for use with digital “HDTV-Ready” dis-play monitors. Using a high-speed, single-chipdigital processor, the DVD 50 is capable ofreconstructing the 3/2 pulldown effect intro-duced when film-based programs are trans-ferred to video. In conjunction with precisionvideo output DACs, the end result is a full 60-frame-per-second output that is the closestthing to film this side of your local cinema. Ofcourse, traditional Y/Pr/Pb component video,S-Video and composite video outputs are alsoavailable for use with conventional televisionsand video projectors.

In keeping with our tradition as a leader inaudio technology, Harman Kardon has packedthe DVD 50 with the latest features, includingaudiophile-grade Wolfson audio output DACsand full compatibility with 96kHz audio pro-gramming. Both coaxial and optical digital out-puts are available for direct connection to A/Vreceivers or surround processors so that youmay take advantage of Dolby Digital* and DTS®

soundtracks. CD playback is enhanced throughthe use of HDCD technology, which providesoptimal playback resolution from HDCD-encodeddiscs and enhanced playback of all CDs. Finally,built-in MP3 decoding allows music discs createdand finalized on a computer to be played backthrough your home-theater system for increasedlistening pleasure.

A wide range of programming features makes iteasy to program an evening’s worth of enter-tainment, selecting from tracks on multiplediscs. When playing DVDs, easy-to-understandon-screen menus and icons make it simple tochange languages, soundtracks, subtitles oraspect ratio, while a parental-lock functionenables you to control which discs may beviewed by younger members of the household.

DVD players are among the fastest growingconsumer electronics products ever brought tomarket, but this may, nevertheless, be the firstDVD player you’ve owned. Although many ofthe features of the DVD 50 resemble those ofstandard CD changers or players, there are anumber of functions that you may be unfamiliarwith. To ensure that you are able to take advan-tage of all the power and flexibility the DVD 50has to offer, we encourage you to review thismanual. 5 DVD COMPATIBILITY & TERMINOLOGY

DVD Compatibility & Terminology

The DVD 50 is more than a DVD player; it willplay the following disc formats:

■ Both 5-inch (12cm) and 3-inch (8cm) discs

■ DVD movie discs

■ CD, CD-R and CD-RW audio discs

■ DTS audio discs

■ CD audio discs with HDCD encoding

■ MP3 discs

■ VCD (video CD) discs

However, it will NOT play the following:

■ DVD discs with a Region Code other thanthe one the player is set for.

■ DVD discs with PAL format video

■ DVD-ROM data discs

■ DVD-RAM discs

■ CD-I discs

■ CD-G discs

■ SVCD discs

■ Photo CD discs

NOTE: Due to differences in the formats of certain discs, it is possible that some discs mayinclude a mix of features that are not compati-ble with the DVD 50. Similarly, although theDVD 50 is capable of a wide range of features, not all discs include every capability of the DVDsystem. For example, although the DVD 50 iscompatible with multi-angle discs, that featureis only possible when the disc is speciallyencoded for multiple-angle play. In addition, theDVD 50 is compatible with both Dolby Digitaland DTS soundtracks, but the number and typesof tracks available will vary from disc to disc. Tomake certain that a specific feature or sound-track option is available, please check theoptions noted on the disc jacket.

■ Playback of DTS audio discs requires connec-tion to a processor or receiver with a DTSdecoder.

■ Playback capability for CD-RW discs mayvary due to variations in the quality of theCD-RW disc and the recorder used to createthe disc.

Since they share some of the characteristics andtechnology of CD players, many of the termsand operational concepts used in a DVD playerare similar to what you may be familiar withfrom CD players and changers, or older videodisc formats such as Laser Disc. However, if thisis your first DVD product, some of the termsused to describe the features of a DVD playermay be unfamiliar. The following explanationsshould solve some of the mysteries of DVD, andhelp you to enjoy all the power and flexibility ofthe DVD format and the DVD 50.

Aspect Ratio: This is a description of thewidth of a video image in relation to its height.A conventional video screen is four units widefor every three units of height, making it almostsquare. Newer wide-aspect-ratio video displaysare 16 units wide for every nine units of height, making them more like the screen in a movietheater. The program material on a DVD may berecorded in either format and, in addition, youmay configure the DVD 50 to play back ineither format, depending on the featuresrecorded on a disc.

Chapter: DVD programs are divided into chap-ters and titles. Chapters are the subsectionsprogrammed into a single title on a disc.Chapters may be compared to the individualtracks on an audio CD. Press the Menu buttonto see a listing of the chapters on a disc.

Component Video: This is a new form ofvideo signal that eliminates many of the arti-facts of traditional composite video signals bysplitting the signal into a separate luminancechannel and two color-difference signals. With acomponent video connection, you will seegreater picture resolution and eliminate manypicture imperfections such as the moiré pat-terns often seen on checked patterned cloths. However, in order to benefit from componentvideo you must have a video display withY/Pr/Pb component video inputs. Do not connect the component video outputs of theDVD 50 to the standard composite or S-Videoinputs of a TV or recorder.

Title: For a DVD, a title is defined as an entiremovie or program. There may be as many chap-ters within a title as the producers decide toinclude. Most discs include only one title, butsome may have more than one, to give you a“Double Feature” presentation. Press the Titlebutton to see a listing of the titles on a disc. When a disc has only one title, pressing the titlebutton may show a list of the chapters.

Multiple Angle: DVDs have the capability toshow up to four different views of the samescene in a program. When a disc is encodedwith multiple-angle information, pressing theAngle button will enable you to switch betweenthese different views. Note that, at present, fewdiscs take advantage of this capability and, when they do, the multiple-angle technologymay only be present for short periods of timewithin the disc. Producers will usually insertsome sort of icon or graphic in the picture toalert you to the availability of multiple-anglescenes.

Reading: This is a message that you will seewhen you first press the Play button. It refers tothe fact that the player must first examine thecontents of the disc to see whether it is a CD orDVD, and then extract the information aboutthe type of material on the disc, such as lan-guages, aspect ratios, subtitles, number of titlesand more. The slight delay while the contents ofthe disc are read is normal.

Resume: The operation of the Stop button onthe DVD 50 works differently from what youare used to on CD players. On a traditional CDplayer, when you press the Stop button, the unitdoes just that: it stops playback. On a CD player, when you press the Start button again, the discstarts from the beginning. With the DVD 50,however, you have two options when playingDVD discs. Pressing Stop once will stop theplayback, but it actually puts the unit in theResume mode. This means that you can turnthe machine off and, when you press Play thenext time, the disc will resume or continue fromthe point on the disc where the Stop buttonwas pressed. This is helpful if you are watchinga movie and must interrupt your viewing ses-sion but wish to pick up where you left off.Pressing the Stop button twice will stop themachine in a traditional manner and, when the disc is played again, it will start from thebeginning.

13 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

InstallationConnections will vary, depending on the type ofaudio and video components used with yourDVD 50. However, regardless of the complexityof your system, the installation guidelines onpages 14–17 should always be followed toensure a safe installation and reliable operationof the product.

Important Note: To prevent possible damageto your speakers or other components in yourhome entertainment system, we strongly rec-ommend that ALL system components, includ-ing the DVD 50, be turned off and unpluggedfrom their AC power source when any connec-tions are made or a new component isinstalled.

Placement of the DVD 50Since the laser transport mechanism andcarousel tray in the DVD 50 are precision components designed and manufactured toexact tolerances, they are subject to interfer-ence from vibration. To minimize the possibilityof skipping during playback, it is recommendedthat the unit be placed on a level, solid,vibration-free surface.

When installing the DVD 50 in a cabinet ortight space, always make certain that there isenough room in front of the unit for the disctray to open fully, and that there is enoughspace above the unit so that discs may easilybe inserted into the spaces in the tray.

As the disc drawer extends out about six inchesfrom the front of the unit when it is open, youshould also make certain that there is sufficientclearance in front of the unit to accommodatethe disc drawer without it bumping into otherobjects or getting in the way of anyone walkingin front of the unit.

In addition to the safety considerations outlinedon page 4, it is also recommended that theDVD 50 not be placed in a location that is sub-ject to direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold,as these conditions may damage the discs usedin the player, or the player itself. Note thataudio amplifiers or high-power receivers, aswell as certain other electronic products, cangenerate significant heat. For that reason, donot place the DVD 50 directly on top of anamplifier, receiver, or other heat source.Always allow at least one inch of free space onall sides of the DVD 50 as well as around otherelectronic products to allow for proper ventilation.

Installation OptionsThe diagrams on pages 14–17 describe thethree basic ways to connect the DVD 50 to yoursystem components.

■ Option #1: Use this setup if all audio andvideo connections from the DVD 50 will godirectly to a television set or video projectorwithout the use of an A/V receiver or surround processor.

■ Option #2: Use this setup if the video con-nections will go directly to a television set orvideo projector, but the audio connectionswill be made to an A/V receiver or surroundprocessor.

■ Option #3: Use this setup if all audio andvideo connections will be made through anA/V receiver or a surround processor.

Important Notes on Installing the DVD 50The following important notes apply to all threeinstallation options:

■ If your television has both standard compos-ite video and S-Video inputs, you only needto use one of the two connections. Wherepossible, we recommend an S-Video connec-tion, due to the higher picture quality.

■ Do not connect any of the video outputs ofthe DVD 50 through a VCR. The use ofMacrovision encoding on most DVD discsmeans that most discs will have a distortedpicture when connections are made througha VCR.

■ Note that the volume level for DVD playbackmay differ from the level for other inputsources to your receiver. This is normal anddoes not indicate a problem with the DVD 50or your receiver. Simply use the volume con-trol on the receiver to set the desired level.

■ Depending on the product and brand, anumber of different descriptions are used tolabel component video connections. You maysee them as Y/Pr/Pb, Y/Cr/Cb or Y/R-Y/B-Y.For the purposes of connecting a DVD player, all of these labels are normally identical. Thebest guide is to connect the componentvideo connections using the green/red/bluecolor coding of the inner rings of the con-nection jacks.

■ If your television is high-definition or “digitalready” television, you may take advantageof the DVD 50’s progressive scan output forthe highest video resolution possible. Makethe component video connections shown oryou may connect the component video jacksdirectly to the component video or HD com-ponent inputs on your TV or video display.Once the connection is made, the progres-sive scan circuitry must be activated bychanging the setup menus as shown onpage 23. Note that progressive scan capabil-ity is not operational with standard analogcomponent video connections.

■ Note that all cables shown for use in theconnection diagrams are optional. Consultyour dealer or installer for information onthe best cables for your specific systemapplication.

■ When the progressive scan output is activated, there is no output from either the S-Video § or Composite Video ∞jack.

■ When the Component Video Output ¢is used for a standard video signal (that iswith the progressive scan output turned off),there is no output from the S-Video §jack, but the Composite Video Output∞ will function normally. See page 23 formore information on video output settings.

14 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

Installation and Connections

OPTION 1:

Direct Connections to a Television orVideo ProjectorThis is the simplest installation, as it does notrequire anything other than a television set. However, note that in this type of system youwill not be able to enjoy the benefits of DolbyDigital or DTS discrete playback, as thatrequires the digital audio processing found inA/V receivers or surround processors. Follow asmany of these steps as needed, based on thecapabilities of your television:

Step 1: Connect the AC Power Cord ª to anAC outlet as shown in Connection , butdo NOT turn the DVD 50 on at this point.

Step 2: Connect the left and right AnalogAudio Outputs £ to the left and right audioinputs on your television as shown inConnection .

Step 3: Depending on the video input capabilitiesof your video display, make one of the followingconnections. For the highest video quality, usecomponent video connections, if available. An S-Video connection is the next best quality, followed by a standard composite video connection.

If the video display has component videoinputs, connect the Y/Pr/Pb ComponentOutputs ¢ on the DVD 50 to the matchinginput jacks on the back of your television asshown in Connection . This connection isthe same regardless of if the component con-nection is to a digital television for progressivescan use or to a standard analog video display.

If the video display has an S-Video input andcomponent video is not available, connect the S-Video Output § on the DVD 50 to the S-Video input on your video display as shownin Connection .

If the only video input available on your televi-sion is a standard video jack, connnect theComposite Video Output ∞ on the DVD 50to a matching composite video input on yourvideo display, as shown in Connection .Note that in most cases the video input jack isrecognizable by the yellow ring surrounding theinput.

The DVD 50’s remote control contains all of thecodes needed to operate the product. In addi-tion, it offers a built-in backlight that may beused to identify the remote buttons when theremote is used in low-level lighting conditions.A guide to the operation of the remote’s func-tions is found in this manual on page 11.

BatteriesBefore using the remote, install the AA batteriesprovided with the product by turning theremote over and moving the small latch on thebottom in the direction of the arrow. After thelatch is loosened, flip the cover up and thenremove it. Install the two batteries as shownhere, being careful to observe the “+” and “–”polarity indications for proper placement of thebatteries in their compartment. Replace thebattery cover by first sliding the two teeth onthe cover into their matching slots towards thetop of the remote. Then, gently press down onthe cover until the latch firmly snaps into place. The remote is now ready for operation.

NOTE: When replacing batteries, it always agood idea to replace both at the same time. When the remote will not be used for anextended period of time, it is also a good ideato remove the batteries to avoid the possibilityof damage due to corrosion. Batteries containchemical substances and we recommend thatyou dispose of them properly and in compliancewith any local regulations.

Notes on Remote Control Operational Range■ The DVD 50’s remote will operate up to arange of about 23 feet (7m) from the RemoteSensor ^ in a range of about 30 degrees toeach side of the unit, as shown in the diagram.

■ The operating distance may vary according tothe brightness of the room.

■ Do not point any bright lights in the direc-tion of the unit’s Remote Sensor ^, as thiswill decrease operating range.

Notes on Batteries for the DVD 50Remote

■ The batteries normally last for about oneyear although this depends on how often, andfor what operations, the remote control is used.

■ If the backlight does not light, or if theremote control unit fails to work even when itis operated near the player, replace the batter-ies. When replacing the batteries, do not mixold and new batteries; always change both cellsat the same time.

■ Always dispose of used batteries in an envi-ronmentally safe manner and in compliancewith any local regulations.

■ Do not use rechargeable (Ni-Cd) batteriesand do not attempt to recharge, short-circuit ordisassemble the batteries.

■ If the remote control unit is not going to beused for an extended period of time, removethe batteries. Otherwise, electrolyte may leakwhich may lead to malfunctions as well asdamage to the remote, which is not covered bythe warranty.

■ Should any electrolyte leak from the batter-ies inside the remote control unit, wipe it awaybut avoid any contact. If any electrolyte shouldcome into contact with your skin, wash it offthoroughly with water.

System DefaultsThe final step of the installation is to establishthe system’s defaults. The factory settings forthe unit will accommodate most requirements,so it is not essential that they be changed.

If you wish to immediately play a disc, proceedto page 26. However, it is helpful to take a fewminutes to familiarize yourself with these set-tings, as they may require change from time to time.

Before using the DVD 50 for the first time, make certain that the unit is properly connectedto any audio/video components it will be usedwith, as described on the previous pages. Whenthe installation is done, make certain that thebatteries are properly installed in the remoteand that the unit is plugged into an AC powersource.

The first step in checking or changing the sys-tem defaults is to access the Setup Menu. First, make certain that the DVD 50 is properly con-nected to a video display, and that power isconnected. For this process, however, you donot need to load any discs into the unit.

In order to proceed with the DVD 50’s setup, first turn on your television or video display, along with any AV receiver or surround proces-sor that is used in conjunction with theDVD 50. Make certain that those devices areset to the correct audio and video inputs foruse with the DVD 50. If you have not alreadydone so, plug the AC Power Cord ª into awall output or surge protector/power strip.

When the power is first connected to theDVD 50, the front panel Information Display $will welcome you with a HELLO DVD 50message and the DVD 50 screen will appear inyour video display. The DVD 50 will thenattempt to see whether there are any discs inthe machine, even though this is the first time itis being used. Since there are no discs in theplayer, a NO DISC message will appear inboth the on screen display and in theInformation Display, and the disc numbersinside the Disc Number Indicators B willgo out as each position in the loading tray isexamined and found to be empty. It is not nec-essary to load any discs in the machine at thistime to start the setup process.

To access the Setup Menu, press the MenuButton on the remote. The Setup Menuwill appear on the video display screen asshown in Figure 1. The left side of the screenwill show the various options, and the box on the right side of the screen will show the current defaults.

Aspect RatioThe aspect ratio of a television picture is therelationship between its width and height, andit defines the shape of the picture. Televisionsets have traditionally had an aspect ratio of4 x 3, which is to say that they are almostsquare, with slightly more width than height.Almost all television programming is presentedin the 4 x 3 aspect ratio so that the pictures fitwithin the confines of the TV screen.

Movies, on the other hand, have a variety ofwhat are known as “wide aspect ratio” formatsthat are significantly wider in relation to theirheight than traditional television pictures.Indeed, the development of wide-screen movieswas something that was popularized in the1950’s in response to the success of television;movie producers wanted to provide a widervista than afforded by TVs.

However, since many movies are produced for awider screen than the TV set they are playedon, there is a problem that is like fitting asquare peg in a round hole. In many instancesthis is taken care of by the disc’s producers, who reformat the image to fit within a standard4 x 3 TV screen. Discs such as this require nospecial setting. The only downside to this is thatwhen wide-screen movies are converted to4 x 3, some of the information at the sides of ascene may be cut off due to the difference inpicture shape. This is also called a “pan andscan” presentation, as a 4 x 3 viewing area ismoved across the wider cinema image.

Other discs are produced in what is called a“letterbox wide-screen” format. In this case theentire wide image is fit inside the 4 x 3 screenshape from side to side. This means that yousee the entire picture as the movie’s directorintended, but the height of the picture isreduced to accommodate the added width. Theblank areas that appear at the top and bottomof the screen make the image in the centerappear as if you are looking into a mail slot, giving this sort of presentation the nickname of“letterbox.”

The DVD format accommodates both of theseformats, though it is up to the producer of thedisc to select which way to convert the movieto video. Sometimes you will have a choice ofonly one of the two formats, while some discsoffer a full screen, with the pan and scan ver-sion on one side of a disc and the widescreen, but letterbox version, on the other side.

The DVD 50 will play either type of disc, andyou may select a default that tells which way topresent the image when there is a choice.

To select an aspect ratio default, you must beviewing the Setup Menu (Figure 1), which isavailable by pressing the Menu Buttonwhile the unit is in the Stop mode. At the SetupMenu, press the ¤ Navigation Button euntil the TV Aspect option is highlighted. Next, press the Enter Button `. Select one of the three choices in the options box(Figure 10) using the ⁄/¤ NavigationButtons e.

Figure 10

Depending on the type of television set youhave, choose one of these three options:

■ 4 x 3 Letterbox: Choose this setting if youhave a standard 4 x 3 television set and pre-fer to see movies in their original aspectratio. You will see the entire movie but, when it is presented in a letterbox fashion, there will be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Movies or other pro-grams recorded in a 4 x 3 format will appearnormal.

■ 4 x 3 Pan Scan: Choose this setting if youhave a standard 4 x 3 television set andalways want the image to fill the entirescreen. When a wide-screen movie is shown, you may not see parts of the picture at oneside of the screen or the other. Note, how-ever, that even when you select this option, playing a wide-screen-only movie will resultin black letterbox bars at the top and bot-tom of the screen. This is due to the way the disc was produced, and it cannot bechanged.

■ 16 x 9 Wide-Screen: Choose this setting onlyif you have a wide-screen television set(16 x 9 aspect ratio). With this setting, theDVD 50 will adjust the output for wide-screen movies so that they fill the entirescreen in the proper aspect ratio. Note, how-ever, that in this setting a disc recorded inthe 4 x 3 aspect ratio will appear in the widescreen as a boxed image in the center, withblack columns on the left and right side ofthe screen.

NOTE: If the wide-screen option is chosen and a wide-screen movie is played on a con-ventional 4 x 3 aspect ratio set, the image willbe distorted due to vertical compression.

Make the selection for your desired aspect ratioby pressing the ⁄/¤ Navigation Buttonse so that the circle next to your choice isfilled in orange. Press the Enter Button `to finalize the selection.

If you have no other changes to make after set-ting this default, press the Menu Buttonto remove the Setup Menu from the screen, orpress the Play Button g/# to begin orresume playback.

Video OutputThe DVD 50 is among the first 5-disc DVDchangers available that offers the option ofhigh-quality, progressive scan output in addi-tion to standard composite video and S-Videooutputs. When used with a compatible “digitalready” television, the progressive scan outputdelivers twice the information of a standardpicture for a seamless, cinema-like image.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON PROGRESSIVESCAN OPERATION:The progressive scan outputs may only be usedwith video displays (direct-view monitors, rearor front projectors) that have progressive scancompatibility. In general, this includes setsdesigned for use with high-definition television(HDTV), as well as other high-scan-rate moni-tors and displays. If the specifications for yourdisplay show a “horizontal scan rate” figure of31.5 kHz or higher, then the set is most likelycompatible with the progressive scan signal. Ifyou have any doubt as to the compatibility ofyour display with the high-scan-rate signal, consult the set’s owner’s manual, ask your deal-er or installer, or contact the set manufacturer. If the progressive scan rate output is enabled, but the display device is not compatible, youwill not be able to see any image.

If your video display is compatible with progres-sive scan, make certain that you connect theDVD 50 to the display using the ComponentVideo Outputs ¢. Depending on thespecifics of your display, the correct input maybe labeled “Component Video”, “HDComponent Input” or some other similar term.If there is a question as to which input jacksshould be used on your video display, consultthe set’s owner’s manual, ask your dealer orinstaller, or contact the set manufacturer.

Dynamic Range SettingWith the DVD format you have the opportunityto hear a program’s soundtrack in the mostaccurate and realistic presentation possible, thanks to the use of digital audio technology. However, in certain instances you may wish toslightly compress the dynamic range of theaudio output (the difference between the loud-est sounds and the quietest ones) so that youmay listen to a movie at a lower volume with-out losing dialog intelligibility.

In most cases it is desirable to leave theDynamic Range setting at “OFF” so that nocompression is applied to the audio, but if youwish to change to a compressed setting, followthese steps.

First, you must be viewing the Setup Menu(Figure 1), which is available by pressing theMenu Button while the unit is in theStop mode. At the Setup Menu, press the ¤ Navigation Button e until the DynamicRange option is highlighted. Next, press theEnter Button ` and select one of the two choices in the options box using the ⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons e (Figure 13).The choices are as follows:

■ On: Select this option to turn on theDynamic Range compression circuitry so that the dialog will remain clear even at lowvolume levels.

When you have made your selection using the⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons e to highlightthe desired option, press the Enter Button` and note that the circle next to your choicewill fill in. The menu system will then automati-cally return to the status listing.

If you have no other changes to make after set-ting this default, press the Menu Buttonto remove the Setup Menu from the screen, orpress the Play Button g/# to begin orresume playback.

Note that the performance of the DynamicRange function is dependent on the audio format of the disc being played, and whether or not the disc’s soundtrack is capable of thisfeature.

Digital Audio OutDVD players accommodate a variety of audioformats, including Dolby Digital, DTS and thePCM audio format used by conventional CDdiscs and some DVD playback. Depending onthe type of equipment your DVD 50 is connectedto, you need to set a default for the type ofaudio outputs accommodated. Although theDVD 50 will play all of these disc types, thissetting creates a default that tells which way topresent the soundtracks when there is a choice.

In addition to compatibility with both DolbyDigital and DTS multichannel soundtracks, the DVD 50 also accommodates the latest 96kHz DVD recordings. This menu sectionallows you to select how 96kHz audio pro-grams are handled so that they are compatiblewith your A/V receiver or surround processor.

To select a Digital Audio Output default, youmust be viewing the Setup Menu (Figure 1),which is available by pressing the MenuButton while the unit is in the Stopmode. At the Setup Menu, press the ¤Navigation Button e until the DigitalAudio Out option is highlighted. Next, press theEnter Button `. Select one of the threechoices in the options box (Figure 14) using the⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons e. The choicesare as follows:

Figure 14

■ Stream/PCM: Choose this option if yourA/V receiver or surround processor is capa-ble of decoding both Dolby Digital and DTSaudio. With this selection, either DolbyDigital or DTS will be output according tothe choice made in the Audio Menu optionsprovided by the DVD disc.

■ Dolby Digital/PCM: Choose this option ifyour A/V receiver or surround processor hasa digital input, but is only capable of decod-ing Dolby Digital. With this selection, whenboth a Dolby Digital and DTS program arepresent, the DVD 50 will automatically out-put the Dolby Digital data stream.

■ PCM: Choose this setting if you are usingonly the left/right Analog Audio Outputs£, or if the Digital Audio Outputs¶/• are connected to a processor that iscapable of decoding only conventional PCMaudio for CDs.

Remember, regardless of the option chosen, youmay still have to adjust the settings on youraudio equipment or in a specific disc’s menusto match the output of the DVD 50. In addition, the choice of which audio formats are availableis limited by the type of material recorded onthe disc when it was authored.

Use the ⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons e tomake your selection, as noted by the circle tothe right of your desired choice turning orange.

Once a selection has been made for the type ofdigital audio data streams that the DVD 50outputs, you may also need to adjust the way ithandles the various sampling frequencies usedin the production of digital audio for DVD. TheDVD 50 is compatible with both 48kHz and96kHz sampling, but some early A/V receiversand surround processors are not. If your audiosystem is NOT capable of handling 96kHz audiosignals in their native form, do not make anychanges to the bottom part of the Digital AudioOut menu, and press the Enter Button `twice to return to the Main Menu Settingsoption. DVD Playback

Using a DVD’s MenuOne of the unique features of the DVD systemis that it offers a producer the opportunity toinclude a wide range of features on a disc, including multiple-language tracks; subtitles ina variety of languages; special information suchas movie trailers and cast information; as wellas other custom-tailored information. In addi-tion, producers may divide a movie or programinto chapters that allow for quick access to specific parts of the program. These chaptersmay be accompanied by thumbnail pictures of a scene from the specific chapter to help you select the desired spot on the disc.

When a disc is playing, press the MenuButton to pause the playback and displaythe disc’s menu. As there are no hard rulesabout style and contents of DVD menus, theway they appear on the screen and the infor-mation they contain will vary from one disc toanother. However, the following general rulesapply to most menus:

■ The first menu that appears is the MainMenu, and you may move through theoptions with the ⁄/¤/‹/› NavigationButtons e, as the disc’s programmingallows. The option selected will typically behighlighted in a certain color or inside anoutline box.

■ To select a highlighted option, which mayeither play a portion of the disc or move to asub-menu, press the Enter Button ` orPlay Button g/#.

■ On some discs, when you select the DVDmenu during the playback of a movie, thedisc will return to the point in the programwhere the menu was selected by offering a“Play Movie” option. Press the EnterButton ` or Play Button g/# toresume play. However, not all discs offer thisfeature, and selecting the menu while play-ing a movie may mean that you will eitherhave to go back to the beginning of the pro-gram or the start of a chapter. This feature isout of the control of the DVD 50, as it is setby the disc’s internal programming.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON DVD PLAYBACK

The DVD 50 is capable of all the features andoptions covered by the DVD standards. However, it is up to the producer of a DVD discto decide which of those features and functionsare available on any given disc. For that reason, not all discs will function identically, and somediscs will not have many of the features of theDVD system. For example, most current DVDdiscs do not take advantage of the multiple-angle feature. When you press a button and theplayer displays the “Feature Prohibited” icon“ ”, this is an indication that the disc has notbeen programmed for that feature.

In addition, it is common for the producers ofDVD discs to block the use of certain functionsduring only some parts of a disc. For example, many discs prohibit the use of fast-play buttonsor prohibit access to the Chapter Menu displayduring the playback of copyright notices, studiologos, movie credits or trailers. The appearanceof the “Feature Prohibited” icon “ ”, or theinability of certain features to operate when thedisc itself has prohibited them, does not indi-cate a problem with the DVD 50, as these fea-tures are outside of the unit’s control.

Zoom FeatureThe DVD 50’s advanced digital video processingcircuits include a Zoom feature that allows youto enlarge the image for closer examination ofa particular part of the picture. Six steps ofenlargement are available, and you may movethe picture around the screen while it isenlarged to locate a specific area.

■ To use the Zoom feature, press the ZoomButton u while a disc is playing orpaused. Each press of the button willincrease the zoom-in effect. When you havezoomed through all six steps, the picture willreturn to normal size.

■ While an image is enlarged, you may use the⁄/¤/‹/› Navigation Buttons e toshift the image on the screen so that areasof the picture that have zoomed off thescreen may be viewed.

■ To return to normal image size at any timewhile the Zoom feature is in use, press theClear Button t.

■ Note that the some discs are created in away that prevents the Zoom feature fromoperating. In addition, the Zoom feature willnot operate on disc menus and may notoperate on subtitles.

Playback Resume FeatureThe DVD 50 offers a “Resume” feature that isdifferent from the conventional “STOP” func-tion you may be used to on CD players. Whenthe Stop Button !/j is pressed once, thedisc will stop, an on-screen RESUME indicationwill appear on the video screen and theResume Indicator R will light. While theResume feature is active, the disc’s position isentered into the unit’s memory so that whenthe Play Button #/g is pressed to resumeplayback, the program will continue at thepoint where it was when the Stop button waspressed.

To completely stop playback, press the StopButton !/j twice.

If you attempt to use the multi-ple-angle feature on a disc that is not pro-grammed for it, you may see the ProhibitedFeature icon “ ” on the screen. This is not afault of the player, but it simply indicates thatthe feature is not available on the disc beingplayed.

To see whether a disc contains multiple angles, check the disc’s cover or jacket. When a discdoes contain scenes with multiple angles, theproducers will usually include some sort of spe-cial on-screen icon to alert you to the avail-ability of different angles of view.

When a disc that contains multiple-angle infor-mation is playing, the Angle Indicator H willlight steadily throughout the disc. This tells youthat there are some places on the disc withmultiple camera angle choices. However, inalmost all cases, the actual use of multipleangles will be restricted to specific places onthe disc rather than appearing throughout the

When multiple camera angles are available, theeasiest way to change the angle is to press theAngle Button . VCD PlaybackVCD is a format that predates DVD which isbased on a different compression format thanDVD and a recording method that is similar toCDs. Although the DVD has, for the most part, replaced VCD as a format, the DVD 50 offersVCD playback so that you may play your exist-ing library of VCD discs.

There are two versions of the VCD format: anearly version which is simply called “VCD” anda later version with Playback Control which iscalled “Version 2.0” or “PBC”. The DVD 50 iscompatible with both forms of VCD, althoughplayback will vary according to which version is used and the specific way in which the discwas created.

Even though VCD discs provide video since theformat is based on CD technology, the playbackfunctions for a VCD disc operate very closely tothose for CD. To play a VCD disc, place it in theDVD 50 as you would any other CD or DVDdisc. After the unit takes a few seconds to readthe disc’s contents the VCD segment of theDisc Type Indicators A will light and thedisc will begin playing. If the disc has been cre-ated under VCD Version 2.0, or if it otherwiseallows Playback Control functionality, the lettersPBC will appear in the Title/Track IndicatorsC. However, keep in mind that the exact levelof functionality for any VCD will vary widely andit is ultimately determined by the way the discwas created, not by the DVD 50.

When playing VCD discs, most standardDVD/CD playback controls function as normal, including Play, Stop, Pause, Forward or ReverseSlow Play, and Fast Forward or Reverse Search(x2, 4x and 8x speeds). The indications for fast

play in either direction work as described forCD playback on page 32.

Using the On-Screen Status Bar for VCDPlaybackWhen playing many VCD discs it is possible toaccess the disc’s features using the on screenmenu bar in the same manner as shown for CDplayback on page 32. Note, however, that thewhile the IntroScan icons will appear in themenu bar, the IntroScan feature is not availablefor VCD discs.

Use of other functions will vary according to thedisc type. With some VCD discs you may selecta track using the Track function on the menubar. If the menu bar is not visible on the screenpress the Status Button 3 to recall it to thescreen. Note that when PBC appears under thedisc icon in the far left position of the menu barit is not possible to change track numbersdirectly.

Depending on the disc’s functionality, someVCD discs allow the time display to be changedin the same manner as described for CD discson page 32.

Playback ControlVCD discs made under the Revision 2.0 specifi-cation will usually offer PBC, or playback con-trol. With PBC many discs include chapter selec-tion menus that are similar to those found onDVDs. However, on VCD discs the menus arerecalled and controlled differently than on DVD discs.

■ To view the menu options on a PBC disc, press the Next z or Previous f but-tons on the remote or the Skip Forward/Reverse Buttons ) on the front panel.

■ Once the menu options appear on thescreen, make your selection by pressing theNumeric Button n that corresponds toyour desired choice. The desired selectionwill begin playing automatically.

Note that the Menu Button used during DVDplayback is not used for VCD playback.
