DSM in Additive Manufacturing

Committed to continuous development for the future of the Additive Manufacturing industry.

DSM’s commitment to Additive ManufacturingDSM has been active in Additive Manufacturing (AM) for over 20 years. Our commitment remains the same today – bring new materials and polymer technologies to this exciting industry.AM is quickly evolving from a prototyping technology on the fringes of manufacturing into a mainstreamed discipline, offering tangible value and economically viable benefits to large industrial companies and end-users. Mass customization and small volume production has become a reality. As the AM sector begins to evolve and scale to reflect new, disruptive business models and shifting customer behaviors, so are we.We have combined multiple teams focused on AM from across the company into one dedicated, application driven, customer-centric organization. Building on our existing strengths in SLA and DLP platforms through the Somos® business with a renewed focus on R&D and continuous innovation lets us develop a broader, sustainable solutions portfolio and allows us to assess future investment opportunities. Through our innovation efforts supported by technology partnerships and industry collaboration, we have been able to extend development to fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) products. We will continue to explore more new and emerging technologies in AM to provide the industry with the broadest solutions portfolio.DSM has a long track record and deep understanding of end-customer needs in transportation, healthcare, apparel, tools and electronics. This gives us a unique perspective to provide solutions to end-users and help them move to manufacturing. To create an open and flexible infrastructure for our customers, a collaborative environment of partnerships will be at the core of our organization. We are passionate about providing the right material and the right platform for customer-specific applications, without locking them into a proprietary system — allowing them to dynamically respond to market demands quickly. As the AM industry continues to define the future of manufacturing, we’re looking forward seeing what the next 20 years will make possible.

Materials for FFF/FDMArnitel® ID2045: Flexibility with strengthArnitel® ID2045 is a highly flexible TPC (ThermoPlastic Co-polymer) used in Electronics and Sports & Leisure. It is a flexible polymer with very good UV and chemical resistance compared to TPU (ThermoPlastic Urethane). It exhibits no buckling and can handle higher print speed than existing TPU’s in the market. With unbeaten layer-to-layer adhesion (compared to ABS, PLA, TPU and other PA’s) and an elongation at break up to 400%, your Arnitel® ID 2045 part is sure to withstand many rigourous applications.

Arnite® ID3040: Strong and solidArnite® ID3040 (PET) is a high-performance engineering plastic that combines high strength and rigidity with excellent processing characteristics making it well suited for a broad range of automotive, electronic and consumer good applications.

Novamid® ID1030: Ductile strengthNovamid® ID1030 is a unique premium polyamide origianlly designed to meet the demands for the automotive and electronic industries. It is a very ductile, strong polymer suitable for harsh environments and high temperatures (up to 125°C) while offering excellent layer-to-layer adhesion and fast printing processability.

Novamid® ID1070: High heatNovamid® ID1070 uses a high quality PA6 which has been used in Automotive and Electronics for many years. It is a very ductile and strong polymer suitable for harsh environments (under-the-hood) and at high temperatures (150°C).

Somos® stereolithography materialsSomos® 9000 Series: Semi-flexibleWhether you’re in the electronic, automotive or consumer goods industries, the Somos® 9000 series provides the ultimate solution for form, fit and function with parts that are semi-flexible. The pliable nature of these materials makes them ideal for snap-fit parts and casings. They are also useful in market research evaluation, helping to speed up the testing process so products can get to the marketplace faster.

Somos® Element: Antimony-free for Investment CastingSomos® Element has been specifically created to improve the repeatability and quality of 3D printed casting patterns.Patterns created with Somos® Element have strong green strength, are dimensionally stable during storage and leave a minimal amount of ash residue after burnout. Any residue that is left behind is easily removed, leaving a perfectly clean void in the ceramic mold which translates into less mold prep and lower rates of rework saving customers time and money.

Somos® EvoLVe 128: Durability with fast processingSomos® EvoLVe 128 is a durable stereolithography material that produces accurate, high-detailed parts and has been designed for easy finishing. It has a look and feel that is almost indistinguishable from finished traditional thermoplastics, making it perfect for building parts and prototypes for functional testing applications – resulting in time, money and material savings during product development.

Somos® GP Plus 14122: The universal resinSomos® GP Plus 14122 is a low-viscosity stereolithography material with an opaque white appearance. This material mirrors production plastics like ABS and PBT, making it an ideal choice for virtually any application.Recognized for its durability, accuracy, as well as water and humidity resistance, Somos® GP Plus 14122 is a sought-after material among designers in the automotive, aerospace and consumer product industries.

Somos® NeXt: The best of both worldsSomos® NeXt helps you truly take product design to new heights, with a look and feel almost indistinguishable from finished traditional thermoplastics but with a toughness, durability and accuracy not traditionally seen in SLA materials.By using this unique SLA material our customers produce a range of functional testing applications and low-volume prototypes that save significant amounts of time, money and materials.

Somos® PerFORM: Increased performanceSomos® PerFORM produces strong, stiff, high temperature resistant composite parts that are ideal for rapid tooling and wind tunnel testing applications. With the lowest viscosity of any composite stereolithography material, parts made from Somos® PerFORM are faster to build, easier to post-process clean, possess superior sidewall quality and provide unmatched detail resolution.

Somos® ProtoTherm: Turn up the heatFor the automotive and aerospace sectors, our Somos® ProtoTherm materials deliver high temperature resistance with exceptional surface finishing — a perfect combination for simplifying wind tunnel trials. This material also offers superior dimensional stability, making your parts robust for testing.

Somos® Taurus: Expand your capabilitiesSomos® Taurus brings the combination of thermal and mechanical performance that until now has only been achieved using thermoplastic 3D printing techniques such as FDM and SLS. Parts printed with this material are easy to clean and finish. The higher heat deflection temperature of this material increases the number of applications for the part producer and user. The darker color of Somos® Taurus also gives an added richness to your parts to minimize part finishing and painting making it a great choice for the automotive and aerospace industries.

Somos® WaterShed XC 11122: The difference is clearSomos® WaterShed XC 11122 is the clear solution for designers looking for ABS and PBT-like properties for stereolithography technology. One of our most popular resins, Somos® WaterShed XC 11122 produces highly detailed parts with superior clarity and water-resistance. The durable, optically clear parts it creates have a smooth finish to help you accelerate your testing time. The look and feel is so similar to an engineered plastic, you might not be able to tell the difference.

Somos® WaterClear Ultra 10122: Seeing things clearlyImagine the freedom to quickly and accurately prototype your new design using stereolithography. It’s now possible using Somos® WaterClear Ultra 10122—a fast, low-viscosity material that produces accurate, functional parts that simulate an acrylic appearance with minimized finishing.Somos® WaterClear Ultra is ideal for applications that require optical clarity - for example, fluid flow analysis. Meanwhile, where lenses need to be thicker, this material provides refractive values similar to engineered plastics. You’ll clearly see the difference this material makes to your next design project.

Somos® ProtoGen Series: Tailored for your projectThe Somos® ProtoGen line was the first material in stereolithography to demonstrate varied material properties based on machine exposure control. When you need a high-heat and humidity resistant material for your parts, Somos® ProtoGen materials deliver the performance you need. These materials create accurate, easy-to-clean parts, ideal for automotive and medical applications.
