All of them share common concerns such as process energy efficiency and reliability, but further interests grow in facilities that are part of the water life cycle.

THE BYPASS SYSTEM

The operation point is modified by closing the line valve. This effect increases the hydraulic losses and reduces pump’s efficiency. Therefore, depending on the pump’s construction, it doesn’t provide any energy savings.

A parallel circuit equipped with a line valve guides part of the flow back to the suction line. By opening and closing the bypass valve, the system is able to control the delivered flow to the system. Consequently, the pump’s flow and efficiency are increased and head is reduced. Occasionally, the pump could deliver a high flow even though the system is completely cut off.

Operation principlesThere are several different methods to meet flow and pressure requirements. The most extensively used flow control methods for pumps are throttling, bypassing, on-off control and VSD control. Throttling and bypassing controls modify the performance curve of the pipeline, adding further losses to the hydraulic system, to meet the flow requirements.

In general terms, throttling control or bypass system are energy inefficient solutions and should be avoided. The efficient alternative is the variable speed control.

The variable speed pump’s control provides unique regulation and performance features. The variable speed drive modifies the performance curve of the pump in order to meet the system requirements. The centrifugal pump performance is modeled by the affinity laws. In theory, the power reduction is proportional to the cubic of speed, for example a 20% speed reduction cause a power saving greater than 47%.

PARALLEL PUMPS WITH ON-OFF CONTROL

In systems with a wide flow range, it can be an advantage to use a number of smaller parallel-connected pumps instead of one larger pump equipped with flow regulation. The centralized control will start and stop the pumps in order to satisfy the flow demand. A combination of variable speed drives and soft starters could be the most efficient solution.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND PROCESS OPTIMIZATION

PERFORMANCE CONTROL

When energy expenses are greater than 40%, the installation incomes are great dependant of the kWh/m3 ratio. Therefore, Power Electronics offer a wide variety of measures focus on energy efficiency and optimization. By using a mature technology in combination with the latest knowledge, the overall efficiency increase:

• SD700 SERIES has an optimized cooling design. It includes oversized heat sinks, independent cooling sections, axial fans and low air speed. These features increase the cooling efficiency and maintenance intervals. The ultimate models have a variable speed control for fans that increases the fan’s lifetime, reduces the energy consumption and the audible noise.

• XMV660 multi-cell topology provides a negligible current ripple that increases motor efficiency and the overall performance.

• XMV660, V5 and VS65 available with general bypass that provides 100% operational efficiency.

In reverse osmosis desalination, the high pressure pump’s control highly depending on membrane status is a key factor to obtain the maximum productivity and performance ratios. Additionally, facilities with hybrid technologies need real time data to schedule the optimal and more profitable process combination. Take advantage of the grid and motor real time data provided by drives and soft starters. Use them to gauge the optimal pump and system efficiency.
