®
• Casing is rotated to drill, and provides hydraulic and mechanical force to the cutting structure.
• Cases the well as it is drilled.
• Casing is near bottom at all times.
• Casing is cemented in the well without tripping it out.
• Types• “Bit” attached to casing (drill in)• Retrievable & re-runable BHA• Rotary Steerable BHA
Oil Zone
Retrievable BHA
Casing is the
“Drillstring”
Surface Equipment
Casing Drilling:Process to simultaneously drill and case wells by using the casing as the drill string.
Better Ways to The Bottom™
®
• Adapts to any Top Drive
• Automatic Link Tilt System
• Automatic Pick Up Elevators
Uses Top Drive for all Operations:
1. Make-up Connections.
2. Break-out Connections.
3. Rotate Casing String.
4. Drilling operation.

CASING ACCESSORIES
• Torque Improvement– Multi-Lobe Torque Rings
• Wear Resistance– Hydro-formed Centralizers– Wear Bands & Wear pads– Wear Resistant Couplings
• Stabilization and Centralization– Hydro-formed Centralizers– Stabilizers (Integral or HF)– Non-rotating stabilizers
• Drilling/Guide Shoes• Bit Release Tool
– When bit screwed directly onto casing
• Cementing– Pump Down Cementing Float

LANDING / SETTING DLA
• Tools are run in or pumped in on Wireline
• Fluid does not go through BHA, but rather bypasses to outside below Packer Cups
• “Stop Dogs” locate BHA into Casing Profile Nipple
• Pressure up to shift Mandrel, close bypass, set Axial Locks and release Running Tool
• Rotation engages Torsional Locks
Better Ways to The Bottom™
®
RELEASING / RETRIEVING DLA
• Run in or pump in retrieving tool on wireline
• Pressure up to engage onto the DLA
• Continue to pressure up to open bypass and release axial locks
• Pull BHA out of casing
Better Ways to The Bottom™

DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
• Can run a conventional bent housing/motor combination
• Can run a Rotary Steerable assembly
• Can run a conventional building/holding/dropping assembly
• Use Pump Down Release Tool (PDRT) to release DLA and slide casing over BHA prior to pumping wireline
Better Ways to The Bottom™
®
CORING
• Attached a conventional core barrel to the DLA
• Run BHA and latch into profile nipple in casing
• Underream while coring as normal
• Retrieve core quicker and safer through casing by retrieving DLA
• Can quickly shift from drilling to coring operations and back
Better Ways to The Bottom™
®
LOGGING
• Log while drilling (LWD) in pilot hole below underreamer
• Pull casing back, retrieve the DLA and log out the end of casing using conventional open hole wireline tools
• Log through the casing (cased hole logs)
Better Ways to The Bottom™
®
CEMENTING
• After reaching casing depth, retrieve DLA
• Install Pump Down Cement Float (PDCF), and pump to profile nipple
• Pump wiper plug
• Pump cement
• Pump displacement plug
• Bleed off pressure, float holds
• Float self locking for easy drillout

WELLBORE STRENGTHENING• Significant reduction in lost
fluids when Drilling with Casing due to “Plastering Effect” (continuously trowelling of the wellbore wall by the couplings)
• Losses are Reduced even with higher ECD’s
• Filter Cake is smeared into the wall and is not scraped off by bit passage or tool joint impacts
• Cuttings are ground up finer and indications show less cuttings return to surface, instead they are smeared into the wall, strengthening the wellbore

Drilling With Casing Rig• Moved over well• Drilled out plugs, lost immediate returns• Cured lost circ. by drilling ahead• Well completed

WELL CONTROL
• Influxes are reduced due to “Plastering/Smear Effect”
• Continuous circulation even when tripping for new BHA’s prevents surge or swab conditions
• Casing on bottom of well improves kick control procedures
• Reduced trip times reduces influxes
• Well can be killed with a higher pump rate, increasing the ECD (Equivalent Circulating Density)

ADVANTAGES Of Drilling With Casing
• Improved Personnel Safety
• Reduced Rig Requirements
• Time Savings
• Improved Well Control
• Improved Borehole Stability
• Reduced Lost Circulation
