EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report examines two different career choices in the Education Field, Special Education and School Counseling. It takes a look at the differences and the similarities as well.

Based on the research and data there are a few options open to you, (the client). The nice thing about the Education field is that it’s a wide open field with many options. All of which however, require further education. However, most beginning teachers start out teaching with their Bachelor’s Degree, teach for a few years, find out what it is they want to do and then go on to graduate school and pursue their Masters Degree.
I will give you my final recommendation in the Conclusion and Recommendation Section.

INTRODUCTION
The Company
Dream Builders Incorporated was founded by James Durbin and his wife Bethann in
September 2006 after working what seemed like job after job and not getting anywhere.
James had a love for airplanes and had always wanted to be a pilot, and Bethann had a
love for music and always wanted to be a Music Teacher or a performance artist.
James, Bethann and their friends had work experience in what seemed like every field
where vocation degrees and certificates were not required. They went to a seminar on
how to start your own internet business, and voila that’s how Dream Builders, Inc. was
started.
Dream Builders Inc. is now one of the most successful head hunting corporations in the
country. Averaging about 100 clients a week after their first year in business, they
needed to hire more Dream Builders like themselves.

The purpose of this report is to analyze two job possibilities in the Education Field, so my client, Penny Lane, can make an educated decision on what her career options maybe when she graduates with her Bachelors in Liberal Arts.

What Special Education Teachers Do
Special education teachers work with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, emotional and physical disabilities. With students who have mild or moderate disabilities, they ensure that lessons and teaching strategies are modified to meet the students’ needs. With students who have severe disabilities, they teach the students

Job RequirementsThere are some basic skills that both Special Education Teachers and School Counselors should have,
Communication skills. Special education teachers and School Counselors must collaborate with teacher assistants and general education teachers. In addition, they must discuss students’ needs with parents and administrators.
Critical-thinking skills. Special education teachers review and analyze data about students’ progress, strengths, and weaknesses and use that information to develop strategies to help students learn. School Counselors use critical thinking skills when helping a student apply for colleges, or advising a student on a current problem.
Patience. Working with students of different abilities and backgrounds can be
difficult. Special education teachers must be patient when students struggle with
material.
Special Education Teacher
Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited College or University.
Public Schools require Certification or Licensure, Private Schools do not.
Complete an Internship (Student Teaching)
School Counselor Masters Degree in School Counseling (focus in career development) or related field from an Accredited College or University.
Complete 2,000 – 3000 Supervised Clinical Hours (Internship)
State License or Certification

CONCLUSION I wanted to start by saying, congratulations on your graduation. With your hard work, dedication, and a positive outlook I can tell that you will be successful at whatever you choose to do. I wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors.
When looking at the job requirements, they are two completely separate positions, two separate degrees, although in the state of Oregon, it does require two years of a teaching practicum. In my research I found that Oregon has some of the strictest requirements regarding both Special Education Teachers and School Counselors.
For Educational Requirements, I noticed things did not vary too much from the Job requirements. Except for when it came to how many clinical hours were required by each Board of Education for certification. Some states all you needed what was required to graduate from school, and some states the Board of Education required more.
The last thing we looked into was Salary. The thing you have to remember about salary statistics are
They are based on an average.
Salary is based upon experience, location, and need.
You are not going to start out as a beginning Special Ed Teacher or School Counselor making a median salary. You most likely will start out at a low median average. Keep in mind most beginning educators work two jobs just to “make ends meet.”
RECOMMENDATIONSAs far as recommendations go, here is a brief list of things that I would suggest,
Research graduate schools in the area you are interested in living.
Make a list of things that interest you and see where they fit into your career choice.
If you are still undecided about graduate school, work for a few years, get experience in the field, and then apply. Regardless of what you do in Education, eventually you will need your Masters Degree.
Never give up on your dreams! Dream it, Live it, and Make it Come True!
