Men’s Soccer Makes Return to PostseasonSenior Kaitlin O’Sullivan Qualifes for NCAA Cross Country Meet

D R A G O N T A L E SVol 8, No. 8Fall 2006Official Newsletter of Oneonta State Athletics

The fall season of 2006 had many highlights including a return to the postseason for men’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The fall season also saw the women’s soccer team play in its eighth consecutive NCAA tournament with the team advancing to the third round. Individually, senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) became only the second female cross country runner to qualify and compete in the NCAA championship meet.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer began its two-year reclassification process by having one of its most successful seasons in the 51-year history

of the program. Playing a full Div. III schedule, the Red Dragons put together a 16-2-2 season while earning a birth in the ECAC Upstate New York tournament, which they hosted as the top seed. The 2006 season began with three consecutive road tournaments, which included a season opening title at the Clarkson Lotto Tournament. The Red Dragons ended up splitting its games at the other two tournaments to start 4-2. During the first three tournaments it was apparent that this year’s squad was going to put up

incredible numbers averaging four goals per game through the first six contests. Helping the cause was a 15-goal outburst against New York City Tech in the Manhattanville tournament. The Red Dragons ran off four straight wins including back-to-back victories in its first two home games of the year. After a 3-3 tie against Kean University, Oneonta finished the season by running off seven straight wins to sit a 15-2-1. Oneonta, even though they were reclassifying and wasn’t eligible for the NCAA tournament, was given the go-ahead by the ECAC to be eligible for its end of the season tournament. Not only did

the Red Dragons earn a birth, they were selected as the top seed. The tournament field included Union, Fredonia and Oswego. Oneonta defeated Oswego 5-2 in the semifinals of the tournament to advance into the championship game against Fredonia. Junior Keith Manscuk (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) figured in all five of the Oneonta goals with three goals and two assists.

In the championship game Oneonta and Fredonia battled for 110 minutes with nothing being decided after a 1-1 score during regulation. The game went to a shoot out with the visiting Blue Devils coming out on top with a 3-0 score.

Manscuk was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after adding an assist in the championship game to his total from the first game. In recounting records set by the 2006 team, they established new marks for goals (78) and points (211). The team tied the record for wins in a season, which was set in 1972, and they ended the season with a 15-game unbeaten streak, which set a new record as well. Individually, Manscuk had the greatest offensive season ever with his 30 goals, 16 assists and 76 points shattering the previous marks of 17 goals and 41 points in the process. Manscuk’s season included 10 multiple-goal games, five of which he scored at least three goals.

Cross Country

The 2006 cross country season was highlighted by some strong individual performances late in the season including O’Sullivan’s ninth place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Region Meet. Her performance earned her All-Region honors as well as an individual spot at the NCAA championship Meet hosted by Wilmington College. O’Sullivan also became the first Oneonta State female runner

to earn a spot in the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame when she finished third at the conference championship meet.

As a team, the women were sixth at the SUNYAC meet, 15th at the ECAC meet and 16th at the NCAA Atlantic Region meet. The women did open the season by winning the O-State Early Bird Invitational. The men battled injuries to some of the top runners this fall, but still managed to perform well at the ECAC meet placing fourth overall while also winning the season opening O-State Invitational as the team highlights. Senior Ryan Wells spent most of the season on the sideline, but was able to get healthy enough to lead the men at the ECAC meet. He came in

10th overall to earn All-ECAC honors for a second consecutive year.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team put together a winning season in 2006 with a return to the post-season earning births in the SUNYAC, NYSWCAA and ECAC tournaments. The Red Dragons finished 23-17 overall and 6-4 in the SUNYAC East Division, which was third place. The team’s ECAC birth was its first during coach Colleen Cashman’s tenure and first tournament birth other than the SUNYAC since appearing in the NCAA tournament in 2002. After starting the season 1-4, Oneonta won nine of its next 10 matches including six straight to raise its record to 10-5 overall. The final two wins came its first two matches of the opening SUNYAC pool play weekend at Plattsburgh. After the first conference pool play weekend, Oneonta struggled a bit and could never get back on track to string together another winning streak. The most games they won in a row for the remainder of the season was three. At the State tournament, Oneonta was able to win one match in the consolation bracket to come home 1-1. They were swept by RIT in its opener, which put them in the consolation bracket. They regrouped and defeated Oswego 3-2 to finish tied for 9th. Senior Libero, Maegen Eddinger (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) earned NYSWCAA Defensive Player of the Year while junior Sarah Zimmermann (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) earned All-State Honorable Mention honors. In the SUNYAC tournament, the Red Dragons dropped a tough five-game match to Geneseo in the quarterfinals, which eliminated them from earning the NCAA birth that goes to the conference tournament champion. Oneonta did have five players earn All-Conference honors as selected by the coaches. Zimmermann was the lone first team selection while Eddinger, junior Caity Welch (St. Verplank, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and sophomores Courtney Wavercak (Syracuse, NY/Baldwinsville) and Jessica Ptasnick (Wingdale, NY/Dover). Oneonta won its opening match of the ECAC tournament against Potsdam to advance to the semifinals against host Rochester. Unfortunately the season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to the

Yellowjackets. Zimmermann led the team with 268 kills and a .242 hitting percentage. She was also third on the team with 67 blocks. Ptasnick led the team with 718 assists and 68 service aces.

Women’s Soccer

The 2006 women’s soccer team once again had a tremendous run with the team earning its eighth consecutive NCAA birth and ninth in the last 10 years. The Red Dragons won its eighth consecutive SUNYAC regular season title and advanced into the third round of the NCAA tournament. The season began in Virginia where Oneonta was participating in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament that included nationally ranked Johns Hopkins and defending national champion, Messiah. A terrible rainstorm in the area ended up pushing the games back one day, so Oneonta would have to wait an extra day to play its first game against Johns Hopkins. The result would end up being 1-0 in favor of Hopkins. The next day Oneonta would need overtime, but they came out on the winning side of a 1-0 score against the hosts. Sophomore Elizabeth Cherry (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) scored the game-winner on a corner kick in the second overtime. Junior Calli Jo Sheldon (Hartwick, NY/Unatego), who assisted on the goal, would go on to set a single-season record for assists with 13 in 2006. The victory against Virginia Wesleyan seemed to jump-start the Red Dragons as they proceeded to run off 17 straight wins including a 2-1 overtime win against Messiah, who was ranked #1 in the Div. III poll at the time. Unfortunately, the win against Messiah would be the only highlight the rest of the way for Oneonta, who got tripped up in the regular season finale at Hamilton 3-1.

The next game for Oneonta after its loss was against Geneseo in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals. Here again, Oneonta couldn’t get the goal to put the Blue Knights away and had to settle for a tie where the game would be decided by a shoot out. The Red Dragons fell 7-6 in the extra session, which ended Oneonta’s run at an eighth consecutive conference tournament title.

Because of its strong in-region record, Oneonta received a Pool C birth into the NCAA tournament. This year, if they wanted to advance into the final four, they would have to start its journey in Rochester. The Red Dragons gave themselves a chance with a 2-0 win against Rowan in the second round. In the game against Rochester, Oneonta found themselves up against a solid defensive squad, which stymied its offense. Rochester scored a late goal to prevail 1-0, which ended Oneonta’s season. Junior Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) led the team in scoring with 19 goals and four assists for 42 points. Against Oswego in late September, she became only the second women’s player in the history of the program to reach 100 career points. Junior Kirsten Clapper (Dryden, NY/Dryden) and sophomore Sarah Begley (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) both had breakout seasons with 26 and 31 points respectively.

straight wins that included victories against Brockport and Hartwick. After a loss to Geneseo on the road, Oneonta won five of its final seven dual matches ending the season with a 9-0 loss at Rensselaer. Leading the team this fall were seniors Nicole Lindell (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) and Zirka Markewycz (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes). Both earned All-SUNYAC honors after finishing second in their respective flights at the conference championship. They were also the only two players to reach double digits in singles wins with 12 and 10 respectively.

Field Hockey

Rebuilding, reloading and “getting to know you” were the themes for the Red Dragons in 2006. The squad was looking at a team with a new coach and a boatload of new players in the hopes of putting together its fourth straight winning season. First-year coach, Lauren Weiner, had her work cut out for herself in trying to learn about all the players while establishing a new direction for the program.

When it was all said and done, Oneonta finished just one game below the .500 mark at 9-10 while going 2-3 in the SUNYAC. Many rookies got an opportunity to play with a starting lineup that included two or three freshmen at various points during the season. One of these newcomers made her presence felt immediately. Freshman Kathryn Kubaryk (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) emerged as the team’s top gun on the attack in a very short time. She finished the season with a team best 15 goals and 33 points. Her post-season honors included being the

Co-Rookie of the Year in the SUNYAC along with being a first team All-Conference selection. She also earned All- Region honors for her outstanding first season. Oneonta’s season started with the team splitting its first six games before winning two in a row to be 5-3 overall entering its final two games of September. Oneonta lost its next three games including losses to nationally ranked Skidmore and Cortland to fall to 5-6. The Red Dragons then won three straight before dropping four straight and then ended the season with a convincing 6-1 win against Elmira at home.

Women’s Tennis

The fall portion of the women’s tennis season finished with an overall dual record of 8-5 and a fourth place finish at the SUNYAC championship. After rain cancelled two of the first three matches of the fall, Oneonta ended up playing two of the top teams in the SUNYAC to open the season. The Red Dragons dropped both the matches to start the season 0-2. Oneonta bounced back with three

LAUREN WEINER NAMED FIELD HOCKEY COACH

Lauren Weiner was selected as the college’s new field hockey coach over the summer taking over the reins of the program from Michele Dombrowski, who resigned at the conclusion of the last academic year to join her husband in Tennessee at the University of the South. Weiner began her first year as a head coach this past fall after having spent the past two seasons at Montclair State University as a graduate assistant for field hockey and lacrosse while working towards her master’s degree in physical education. While assisting with Montclair State she was involved in all aspects of the field hockey program from instruction to fundraising activities. During the two years Montclair put together a 29-10 record overall including a program-best 17-3 record in 2005 while reaching a national ranking of #6 and receiving an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. Weiner is a 2004 magna cum laude graduate of Mount Holyoke College where she was a standout field hockey player during her collegiate career both on the field and in the classroom. She was a four-year starter and three-time All-American, reaching first team All-American status as a senior. During her four years with the field hockey program the Lyons reached the postseason three times including trips to the NCAA tournament in 2001 and 2003. The Lyons also won two New England Women’s and Men’s Conference titles and won an ECAC championship in 2002. Besides being an All-American during her four-year field hockey career Weiner also earned accolades as an All-Conference and All-ECAC performer while being the NEWMAC Player of the Year in 2003. She played in the North/South Senior All-Star game and was a three-time NFHCA All-Academic Squad selection for her work in the classroom. In her first year with the Red Dragons this fall Weiner guided a young Oneonta team to a 9-10 overall record while going 2-3 in SUNYAC play.

CHAMPS/SAAC News

VELAN EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

Junior forward Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) became the first women’s soccer player in Oneonta State history to earn All-American honors three straight times when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its 2006 All-Americans. Velan earned third team All-American honors for the third straight time after earning her third selection to the Northeast All-Region first team earlier this fall.

This season Velan led the Red Dragons with 19 goals and four assists for a team high 42 points. Her 19 goals tied her season total from a year ago and was just one off the Oneonta State women’s soccer single season record for goals in a season of 20. With one year of collegiate eligibility yet to play Velan has 52 goals and 21 assists for 125 career points. She is seven goals and 12 points away from setting Oneonta career records. Earlier this fall Velan was named a first team All-Conference selection by the SUNYAC while also being honored as the SUNYAC Player of the Year, a D3Kicks.com first team All-American and the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Offensive Player of the Year. The Oneonta women’s soccer team finished the 2006 season 18-3-1 overall and 10-0 in SUNYAC play while winning the SUNYAC’s regular season title and earning a pool C berth to the NCAA tournament.

Fall 2006 began with new leadership in our Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as officer reelections took place. Amanda Villari, (Cross Country) continued her term as President, while Rachel Baxter (Basketball) was elected to Vice President; Caitlyn Fanning (Track and Field) as Secretary and Matt Durkin(Cross Country) as Public Relations/Treasurer.

The first order of business for SAAC was to coordinate Kicking Your Class 2006! This year’s theme of “Superheroes” was celebrated September 3rd by approximately 200 student-athletes in the Alumni Field House. Competitions included an obstacle course, Jello eating contest, trivia contest, dodge ball competition and finally the Tug of War competition! Judges included Dr. Steve Perry, Mary Logan and Steve Logan. Each participating student-athlete received a Kicking Your Class 2006 t-shirt with each sport’s Red Flag Games listed on the back to help promote their BIG competition of the season!

Each meeting this semester began with a fun ice breaker in which each representative stated their name, sport, any updates that they wanted to share with the group concerning their teams and finally they had to answer the ice breaker question. Throughout the semester, representatives discussed such topics as their expectations for the semester, the Faculty Mentorship Program, community service projects, and recapping CHAMPS programs. Other discussions included providing input to and meeting with Dr. Bart Ingersoll, Interim Athletics Director concerning a new department Alcohol and Drug policy; as well as devising interview questions that SAAC officers would ask Athletics Director Candidates during their interview process on their visit to campus.

A “hot topic” on campus concerning the use of Facebook, Myspace and other social internet websites prompted SAAC officers to create their own profile called S.A.V.E, Student Athletes who Value Eligibility listing educational information for student-athletes concerning what they should and should not list on their profiles. As our student-athletes are very recognizable ambassadors of Oneonta State College, it is important that they recognize that posting certain pictures and comments could affect their status on campus. S.A.V.E is also used to post information of upcoming athletic and other campus events as well as an avenue for student athletes to post concerns and questions. Currently S.A.V.E has 150 student-athletes in their group!

SAAC representatives coordinated their teams to participate in three community service projects this Fall. 110 student-athletes from 10 teams competed in the Halloween Fun/Run Walk on Sunday, October 29th. Over $120.00 was raised and 20+ cans of food were donated respectfully to St. Mary’s Church to benefit their annual Thanksgiving Dinner and to Opportunities for Otsego’s food drive. Winners included Travis Visco, Track and Field – Best Costume; Men’s Lacrosse – Best Team Costume; Mark Seigers, Track and Field Alumni – 1st Male Finisher; Kaitlyn O’Sullivan, Track and Field – 1st Female Finisher and Women’s Basketball – 1st Team Finish. On Sunday, November 5th, over 200 athletes from every sport and thirteen head and assistant coaches participated in the 2nd Annual SUNYAC Conference Wide Leaf Raking Day! Residents on Normal Avenue and upper Elm Street were the recipients of high energy athletes lead by Women’s Soccer coach Tracey Ranieri as they raked the whole block; while Baseball Coach Rick Ferchen and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse and their groups took care of the residents of North Ravine Parkway! At the end of the day, over 20 residences were clear of leaves across the City of Oneonta. The final community service project for the semester and the 10th year of participation was our Christmas gift giving to the Angel Tree Migrant Workers Children. Each team was given one to three children to buy gifts for this Christmas and once again, the children are not going to be disappointed. Close to $1000 was donated by our athletic teams to allow 30 children the opportunity to open gifts on Christmas morning, these being the only gifts they may receive.

CHAMPS programming for the semester included continuing the Captain’s Leadership Series involving captains or leaders of each team and their coaches. On October 5th, Tracey Ranieri presented a powerpoint program of Jeff Janssen’s Captain’s Leadership Training Manual highlighting key points of the book and then the group role played different scenarios involving residence hall drinking, hazing and suicide threat.

John Underwood, founder of the American Athlete Institute returned to campus in August to speak to Fall sport athletes and again in October to speak with Winter sport athletes concerning peak athletic performance and the impact of alcohol and other drugs on their performance. Mr. Underwood will return to campus in January 2007 to speak to our Spring sport athletes.

Next we geared up for the 2nd Annual National Hazing Prevention Week sponsored in part by CHAMPS and other student groups on campus. On Monday, September 25th, CAMPUSPEAK speaker Travis Apgar presented his program “Hazing – The Fallout”. Mr. Apgar spoke to an audience of approximately 600 student-athletes, Greeks and general student body on his own personal story of the pain and hidden harm caused by his hazing experiences while attending two separate New York Division III colleges. Our final educational program occurred during Oksoberfest – Alcohol Awareness Week, where freshman and sophomore student-athletes were highly encouraged to attend the presentation The Truth About the Party Scene presented by Bob Gordon. His program centered on dispelling myths and discussing warning signs of drugs as well as arming the audience with knowledge of signs of use, nicknames, terms and true consequences of taking the drugs he discussed.

Amanda Villari, SAAC President was one of 350 student-athlete participants selected to attend the 2006 NCAA Leadership Conference at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida at the end of May. As part of their conference education, participants must come up with an “action plan” which highlights a problem area on campus in which they are dissatisfied and they must then generate solutions and the necessary steps to put their action plan in motion. Amanda’s action plan was to create “Fans in the Stands” a comprehensive group that would generate an appreciation for the athletic programs at Oneonta State by creating spirit on campus. The concept is that through solicitation, emails, Facebook and any other avenues available, this group would be responsible for filling the stands with fans to support our athletics teams. Amanda approached Debbie Coburn, assistant athletic trainer with her thoughts and thus far, Debbie has been the impetuous to get Amanda’s plan in action! At the Battle of the Red Dragons, “Fans in the Stands” members could be seen throwing t-shirts out to the crowd, face painting and taking donations for the “Pie in the Face” contest! Ideas are in place to provide t-shirts that say “GAME TODAY” that student-athletes can wear on their home contest dates, as well as other giveaways for the fans when they come to support our athletic teams! Debbie has also created a “Fans in the Stands” profile on Facebook, creating yet another avenue of communication with the campus community.

Finally, the newly created Faculty Mentorship Program was put into action this Fall. This program celebrates the college’s mission toward academic excellence for all students. Student athletes were asked to provide names of faculty members that have supported them and each faculty mentor was given a letter explaining what their role would be in helping athletes to be successful in the classroom. The premise being the more faculty and student-athletes interact, the more we create an environment for positive learning. In addition to this, Faculty will have insight and understanding into the daily life of a student athlete. Faculty mentors could be involved as much or little as they wanted helping with class work, advising, and for some, tossing balls in practice and traveling with the team. Feedback from all participants has been extremely positive and there are hopes that in the future all teams will be able to participate in this wonderful program.

As we continue to bring you the news of our athletes and their accolades on the field, court, mat, track, course or pool, we hope that you will continue to recognize how much time and commitment comes from each Student-Athlete outside of their athletic competitions and that you continue to support their endeavors by congratulating them for their hard work and for Leading By Example.

JACKSON-BUCKNER NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR FINALISTRecent Graduate also recipient of NCAA Top VIII Award and SUNYAC Delores Bogard Award

Despite her graduation from Oneonta State last May, the honors continue to roll in for former track and fi eld and fi eld hockey standout Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY).

Shortly after capturing the national title in the 200-meters at the 2006 NCAA Div. III outdoor track and fi eld championships last May, Jackson-Buckner was selected as a conference fi nalist for the NCAA Woman of the year award. This fall when the fi eld was narrowed down to nine fi nalists she made the cut earning a trip to Indianapolis on October 28th where the fi nalist were honored at a dinner and the NCAA Woman of the Year was announced. Although she was not named the woman of the year she left her mark on Oneonta State taking the track and fi eld program to new heights and setting records that should stand for years to come.

On the heels of her NCAA Woman of the Year honor, she was then selected in early December to receive one of the Top VIII awards given by the NCAA. Every year the NCAA choses eight athletes from the entire membership body from nominations submitted and honors them with the highest award given by the association.

She fi nished her Track and Field career as a six time All-American (twice indoors and four times outdoors), six time ECAC Champion, seven-time indoor SUNYAC Champion and 10-time outdoor SUNYAC Champion. Last spring she was chosen as the Oneonta State female athlete of the year while also being named the NCAA Div. III U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year.

Academically she handled the busy schedule of being a student-athlete with ease balancing her year round athletic commitments with her schoolwork. She was a Dean’s List honoree throughout her collegiate career and earned numerous accolades for her hard work in the classroom. These honors include being named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic Squad (2002-06) and being named the 2006 New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She appeared on the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List and All-Academic Team numerous times throughout her career and earned second-team Academic All-American honors from ESPN the Magazine for Cross Country/Track and Field as a senior. This past spring she was honored as the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Association female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was one of just 58 student-athletes to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship to help with her pursuit of a master’s degree. She is currently pursuing a degree in higher education administration at Syracuse University.

She earned more honors in November when the State University of New York Athletic Conference selected her as the 2006 recipient of the Dr. Dolores Bogard award, an award is given annually to the most outstanding female student-athlete of the conference. This honor for Jackson-Buckner is the culminating award that marked one of the most accomplished careers of any student-athlete in the history of the college.

IAIN BYRNE AND MIKE SCHMIDT TAKE OVER COACHING POSITIONS

Two familiar faces joined the Oneonta State coaching staff this past summer as full time head coaches. Interim men’s soccer coach Iain Byrne assumed the duties of head men’s soccer coach and associate track and field coach Mike Schmidt assumed the duties of head coach in both indoor and outdoor track and field. Byrne is in his 10th year with the men’s program after spending six seasons as the top assistant and three as the interim coach. He will lead the men’s program during its time of reclassifying from Div. I to Div. III, which will take two years to complete. The squad will rejoin the SUNYAC as a full member in the fall of 2008 and be eligible for the postseason tournament. In his first year as head coach this fall the Red Dragons went 16-2-2 and earned the top seed in the ECAC Upstate New York tournament.

Schmidt is in his fourth year with the track and field program after joining the program as an assistant in the summer of 2003. During his tenure working with the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers he has produced one national champion, 13 All-Americans, six ECAC individual and three relay champions and 36 SUNYAC champions. The women’s team has captured three ECAC team championships and was third at the 2006 NCAA Div. III outdoor championships last May.
