The Worship of Father, Son & Holy SpiritNovember 6, 2011

The Lord’s Day

Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passedbefore the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lordrichly bless you.

Song of Assembly1

By His Wounds PowellHe was pierced for our transgressions

He was crushed for our sinsThe punishment that brought us peace was upon Him

And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed

We are healed by Your sacrificeAnd the life that You gave

We are healed for You paid the priceBy Your grace we are saved, we are saved

What can wash away my sin?Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Welcome and Preparation for WorshipDisturbers are to be rebuked, the low-spirited to be encouraged, the infirm to be supported, objectors confuted, thetreacherous guarded against, the unskilled taught, the lazy aroused, the contentious restrained, the haughty repressed, litigants pacified, the poor relieved, the oppressed liberated, the good approved, the evil borne with, and all are to be loved. ~ St. Augustine

...care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. ~ The Apostle Paul, speaking to the ordained leaders of the church of Ephesus

The Lord Gives Us His PresenceCall to Worship2 Psalm 111:1-5Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. Great are theworks of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and hisrighteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. Heprovides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.1 All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.2 We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name.

Prayer of Adoration & Praise

Hymn of Praise

To God Be the Glory CrosbyTo God be the glory, great things He has done!So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,And opened the lifegate that we may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!

O Come to the Father thro’ Jesus the Son,And give Him the glory, great things He has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood! To every believer the promise of God;The vilest offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Old Testament Reading: The Gospel According to Isaiah Isaiah 53:3-6He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide theirfaces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemedhim stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray;we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

The Lord Gives Us His GraceCall to Confession: Psalm 40:12For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs ofmy head, and my heart fails within me.

Corporate Confession of SinHeavenly Father, we confess before you our desperate need. Our sinful nature is always with us, making us prone toselfishness and slow to look outside of ourselves. Forgive us from wandering from your ways, squandering your gifts, and doubting your great love for us. Pour out your mercy upon us. Teach us to hate our wandering away and cleanseus from our secret sins for the sake of our Lord Jesus. Deepen in our hearts a hunger for your Word and a desire toserve that points to the love we’ve been given. ...Silent & Personalized Confession of Sin... In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Assurance of Pardon Titus 3:4-7But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he pouredout on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirshaving the hope of eternal life.

The Right Hand of Fellowship

The Lord Gives Us His SacramentThe Sacrament of the Lord’s SupperCommunion, also called The Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committedfollowers of Jesus Christ to share in this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims thegospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live in a deeper communion with Jesus. If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the Church.

O Sacred HeadO sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down;

Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown,O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine!

Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.

What Thou, my Lord, has suffered was all for sinners gain:Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain.

Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve Thy place;Look on me with Thy favor, vouch safe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest Friend,For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?

O make me Thine forever; and should I fainting be,Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee.

We look up and extend our handsin a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christis a chorus of joyful song.

“A Long Obedience in the Same Direction”A study of Eugene Peterson’s book looking at the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These are the particular songs thatthe Hebrew pilgrims would sing on their way up to worship in Jerusalem, and they have much to teach us about worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. Room 167a, (down the hall from the church office).

“The Righteous Shall Live By Faith”A study of R. C. Sproul’s book looking at the book of Romans. The book of Romans has been called “Paul’s fullest, grandest, most comprehensive statement of the gospel,” and it’s just as vital for the church today as on the day it waswritten. Room 158a, (right off the sanctuary).

Sedona Class for Young AdultsThe Young Adult Class is studying the book of John, using an excellent study guide (very understandable and applicable)by Frank Barker. The book of John was “written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatby believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Room 168a — the “waterfall room,” off the back hallway, whichcan be accessed from the hallway across from the church office.
