Travelling & Living with the stars

Dowwe Dolla is back in Gauteng. In her new one woman show, ‘#dow-wedolla’, showing at The Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria on Friday, April 8, the queen of Afrikaans satire moves a little away from politics, “because it’s really boring now”, although a spur-of-the-moment swipe can some-times happen by accident.

Amongst the subject matter she explores, Dolla reveals the real rea-sons why women continue to hold onto men, and analyses the South African “braai” in detail from a blonde, psychologist viewpoint. In the process complicated subjects like trophy hunting, homeopathy, arach-nophobia and rabies are put under

the magnifying glass. And for the first time, ouma Dowwe Dolla (also played by Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck) also makes an appearance on the stage to give a more wise and histor-ical (or is it hysterical?) perspective to everyday events in our country.

Expect another laugh a minute with the word tsunami from South Africa’s favourite, opinionated blonde.

SA’s favourite opinionated blonde moves away from political commentary

Loyiso Gola

In this regular column, we chat to some of SA’s favourite sons and daughters about their trav-el experiences and favourite lo-

cal pastimes and haunts. This week we feature politicians’ nightmare, comedian LOYISO GOLA.

What is your favourite travel des-tination, and why?Istanbul has to be the my favourite place in the world. The aesthetics and architecture are amazing and the nightlife will make you wonder if you have been partying the cor-rect way all this time.

What was your first international trip, and what do you remember most vividly about the experi-ence?New York City and London always show me a good time. NYC mainly because of the comedy scene and the fact that I have floor seats at Madison Square Garden (check my Instagram).

What is the first thing you usually do when you arrive at your des-tination and you’re trying to get acclimated? The first thing I do is to buy a cell phone package and then I buy a card/ticket for the train. After that I let all my connections know that I am in town.

What for you is usually the best way to soak up the culture you’re in?Walk the streets and chat to the people; eat the food of the place. When visiting a place you must be open to learn new things; in oth-er words, unlearn your ways for a little.

Flying – love it, or hate it?Love it. Why would I hate the quickest way to get a place? Do you know how long it took to get to places before airplanes?

You’ve got exactly R48 in your wal-let. Where do you go for lunch in

Cape Town and Joburg, and what do you have?CPT: Gatsby at Golden Dish.JHB: Turn ‘n Tender. They have lunch time specials

What is your speciality in the kitchen?Seafood pasta. Ask super funny Tumi Morake about my seafood pasta. Actually don’t; she’s been asking for the recipe.

Describe your ideal night in, and out.Night in: Netflix and chill if, you know what I mean.Night out: Seeing a play/PSL game/going to the cinema. And dinner with friends.

What makes life worth living? The South African Constitution.

SHOW: SHAPECAST: CRAIG HAWKS, CAMILLA WALD-MAN, NYANISO DZEDZE, ZIMKITHA KUM-BACADIRECTOR: GREG HOMANNVENUE: AUTO & GENERAL THEATRE ON THE SQUARE, UNTIL APRIL 16REVIEWER: PETER FELDMAN

The standard and direction of theatre in South Africa can often be judged by the crop of new emerging voices who

bring fresh perspectives to jaded sub-jects.

Dissecting the current South Af-rican landscape, with its myriad cul-tures and creeds, not to mention the hue of its people, is certainly a chal-lenging exercise for playwrights to-day, who often want to make some kind of sense of what’s happening on a cultural, intellectual and social level.

Steven Boykey Sidley and Kate Si-dley are not exactly new to the cre-ative firmament, having established themselves over the years as literary giants in their own fields of expertise, with a host of books and countless newspaper and magazine columns to their credit.

Writing a play, however, is a dif-ferent kind of creative process and what may sound amazing on paper, may not translate well to the stage. And endeavouring to enlighten and entertain audiences through the me-dium of clever satire takes a special understanding of the requirements

of the genre.I am happy to report that ‘Shape’,

the couple’s first excursion into the playwriting orbit, is a lively and of-ten penetrating discourse on those sweaty souls who are prepared to suffer for the cause, be it to meet new people (especially slinky “birds”)

or to simply keep fit and retain one’s sanity in the process. The three characters we meet at an upmarket Sandton gym all reveal something about themselves over a short period of time as they furiously pedal away on a bicycle that goes nowhere.

Stewart (Craig Hawks) is an adver-tising type who seems to be fanatical about staying healthy and develop-ing his body and mind. He sweats through the routines and seems to be straining every muscle, while listen-ing to music on his head-phones. He also takes time to chat to a more ma-

ture member of the gym, the waspy, straight-talking Stella (a wonderful Camilla Waldman), a divorcee, who has had some cosmetic work done to her face and is determined to keep her life on the move.

A third character is Vusi (Nyaniso Dzedze), the seemingly arrogant and confident personal trainer who struts around the gym like a proud pea-cock, offering sage advice to those who have the time to listen.

Adding to the proceedings is an intrusive and unsettling element - an “invisible” entity called the “loud-speaker” (Zimmkitha Kumbaca), who serves as the voice of conscience. She sits in the audience and barks out her commentary.

The sharply etched performances are welded together under the adroit direction of veteran Greg Homann, who brings out the facets of com-mentary and comedy.

The intellectual mix touches on vanity, politics, race, sex and social standings, with enough meat on the bone to stimulate conversation about where South African society, with all its ills, stands today.

The set reflects a modern gym with spanking new equipment ready to be used, and watching the players go through their routines may trigger a response in certain circles to get up and get fit.

Joburg City Theatres appoints

Artistic Manager

Joseph to don his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Montecasino

Joburg City Theatres has announced the appointment of Mr Makhaola Ndebele as Artistic Manager.

Ndebele is a Master of Arts with over two decades of experience across various dramatic disciplines. He has worked in theatre, television and film; as a dramatist and screen-writer, theatre director and drama-turge, television producer and as an independent creative consultant.

Complemented by his wealth of experience, his role at Joburg City Theatres will include developing and overseeing artistic strategies, and policies relevant for all three theatres. Ndebele will be based at the Soweto Theatre, ensuring that the program-ming is appealing and is relevant to the Soweto community, but also has a national and international foot-print.

“We are pleased to welcome Makhaola. He brings the experience and expertise to elevate the theatres’ offerings in continuing to deliver world class artistic, edutainment pro-ductions and talent,” says Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, Chief Executive Of-ficer.

In terms of accolades, Ndebele has been nominated in various catego-ries for the 2015/16 Naledi awards and also served, with honour, as an adjudicator for the 7th and 8th An-nual African Heritage Week Arts and Cultural Festival (Herifest) held at the University of Limpopo (2005, 2006); as a Judge Panel Jury member for

the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd South African Film and Television Awards (2007-2009); and as an International Jury Member for the World Cinema Com-petition, at the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF), in Maharashtra, India (2011).

The Chairperson of Joburg City Theatres, Dr Mongane Wally Serote, adds that “Makhaola’s expertise will contribute towards the organisa-tion’s transformation agenda, which includes African indigenous knowl-edge, development driven, inclusive and content generation.”

Jonathan Roxmouth, Earl Gregory and Bianca Le Grange

Coming to Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino, from April 29 to Au-gust 7, is the retelling of the Bibli-cal story of Joseph and his coat of many colours. This magical musi-cal is packed full of unforgettable songs and stars Earl Gregory as Joseph, the role that launched his career in 2004 (and for which he won the Naledi Award for best male newcomer). Bianca Le Grange is in

the role of the narrator while Jona-than Roxmouth will play the role of the Pharoah.

The creative team will once again (as in the 2004 production) be headed by Director Paul Warwick Griffin, with Musical Supervision by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and Mu-sical Direction by Louis Zurnamer. Choreography will be by Duane Al-exander.

Featuring a local cast of 23 mu-sical theatre performers and danc-ers, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Tech-nicolour Dreamcoat’ promises fun for the whole family.

* Tickets are R350, R250, R150 & R100 with special Group Discounts available – contact Geraldine on 011 511 1988.

2016 is set to be a big year for one of South Africa’s biggest rock bands. Prime Circle will be releas-ing ‘Let The Night In: Deluxe Edi-

tion’ on May 13.The group is touring in support of

the impending release, and will perform at the Cresta Barnyard Theatre on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9. (At the time of going to print, there are still tickets available for the 2pm performance on Saturday.)

Since they first burst out of Witbank more than a decade years ago, Prime Cir-cle’s career has inspired the formation of untold numbers of garage bands across South Africa, with starry-eyed young

rockers hoping that one day, they might make it big the way Ross Learmonth, Dirk Bisschoff, Marco Gomes, Neil Breyten-bach and Dale Schnettler did. Their 2003 debut, ‘Hello Crazy World’, rocketed to gold status in South Africa, with ‘Live This Life’ (their 2005 follow-up following suit). Singles such as ‘Hello’, ‘Live This Life’ and ‘My Inspiration’ earned heavy rotation on South African radio.

2008 saw Prime Circle release ‘All or Nothing’ which raked in the first two Prime Circle South African Music Award nominations of their career, for Record of the Year and Best Rock Album (Eng-lish). To date, the first single ‘She Always Gets What She Wants’ has received over

1080000 YouTube hits - the most-viewed South African rock song ever. ‘Jekyll & Hyde’, unleashed in 2010, was mixed in Los Angeles by Kevin Shirley. New York-based Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino laid the final touches. The first two singles from the album ‘Breath-ing’ and ‘Turning in My Sleep’ were each nominated for the SAMA for MTN Record of the Year in 2011. In March 2011, Prime Circle won the Best International Break-through Act at the MK Awards.

The band released their fifth studio al-bum, ‘Evidence’ in September 2012. The first single ‘Time Kills Us All’, debuted on regional and national radio in South Af-rica to widespread acclaim. The 13-track

album features the recording wizardry of Theo Crous.

In May 2014, Prime Circle released their sixth album, ‘Let The Night In’ be-fore embarking on one of their biggest European and South African tours. Says Ross Learmonth, “Without the fans, we would be nothing. And I don’t ever want to do anything else. Creating music for a living is a privilege, and we never forget that.”

Nicholas Nicolaidis & Richard Cock kick off the programme

UJ Arts & Culture is taking advantage of its world-class theatre facilities and concert Steinway piano at

its Arts Centre on the Kingsway cam-pus to relaunch its classical music programme.

The planned series of classical concerts will feature leading classical musicians from Johannesburg and beyond, as well as the university’s award-winning choirs, and the Jo-hannesburg Youth Orchestra.

Commenting on this three-pronged approach, UJ Arts Producer Grace Meadows says, “We are de-lighted to announce a greatly ex-panded programme of classical music for the coming year”.

The UJ Choir is based on UJ’s Kingsway Campus, and the Unijoh Choral is based on the UJ Soweto Campus. Together they represent the diversity of the City of Gold, per-forming a fine Western repertoire, as well as full-blooded African music. The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company (JYOC) officially took up residence on the UJ Bunting Road campus last year and will be reprising its series of concerts.

“We are thrilled to now be in the position to add to this by reintroduc-ing a robust programme of profes-sional classical concerts, featuring industry stalwarts, such as Richard Cock, Nicholas Nicolaidis, Malcolm

Nay, the Umoya Wind Quintet, and the Resonance String Quartet,” Meadows says, adding that the sea-son will culminate with the all-new Dean’s Gala Concert in November.

Photographic tribute to Thokoza Women’s Hostel makes final stop

Angela Buckland’s exhibition, ‘Block A, Thokoza Women’s Hostel’, is set to open at the Pretoria Art Museum, Pre-

toria on Wednesday, April 13. It is a poignant installation of photograph-ic works which reflect the lives of the young and elderly women who in-habit Durban’s oldest female hostel.

Buckland is an accomplished fine art photographer with an established reputation and many local and in-ternational exhibitions to her credit. She qualified in South Africa and in the UK and as an academic has many years of teaching experience at ter-tiary level behind her.

In this body of sensitively ob-served portrait vignettes of the fe-male residents of the women only hostel situated in downtown Durban, she gives us a view into their lives, their dreams and stories and the tiny spaces they are allotted; spaces which each woman has made into and call their home.

Buckland’s personal work focus-es on the private histories of ordi-nary people – their interaction with friends, lovers, families and strang-ers; the need for connectedness and a sense of belonging. She works fast and intuitively engages with her sub-ject, seeking an emotional veracity, rather than an objective truth - see-ing the image and acting in the mo-ment. As a photographer she rejects rules and challenges herself with self-imposed constraints.

The history of the hostels goes back to the early 1900s – the colonial

era – when historically hostels were established. They became pools of la-bour supplying workers for the busi-nesses, factories and shipping indus-tries. Thokoza Women’s hostel was established in 1925. Previously and currently, these hostels accommodate people who find work in the city. In the twenty-two years since South Africa became a democracy, the hos-tels reflect the reality of a still active migrant labour system which persists,

and the sad, inadequate response to our critical housing shortage

The hostels are still today single sex residences, with the separate buildings designated as men only or women only hostels. With Block A, Thokoza Women’s Hostel, this status is jealously guarded by the women themselves who live there.

Professor Rodney Harber in his 2011 Under Control text writes, “The oldest wing Block A, was the first

women’s hostel in South Africa, built in 1925. With over 5000 residents per hectare it is the most densely inhabit-ed residential site in the city, crowded with women seeking independence and a safe haven from a male domi-nated society”.

This photographic installation was developed after the completion of Buckland’s previous installation work, ‘Block A, Jacob’s Men’s Hostel’.

Buckland states, “I was stimulated

to engage with the women who in-habit this women-only hostel; I was curious to learn about how they lived and explore how their living spaces reflected their perceptions of them-selves, of their dreams and their lives; women who are living and working far from their original homes and families.”

In the process of undertaking this work Buckland became fascinated by this group of women occupying the hostel and the hierarchies that have developed and exist within this unique, closed (entirely) female soci-ety.

Buckland’s touring exhibition has been shown at the Durban Art Gal-lery. It was selected to be exhibited at the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town during the 2014 Month of Photography (MOPS) Festi-val. During the Festival the artist also conducted a photographic workshop. In 2015 the work was presented at the North West University Gallery, Potchefstroom. This showing is the final exhibition of the tour.

* There will be a Walkabout on Thursday, April 14, at 10.30am.The exhibition will be on show until June 26.The Pretoria Art Museum is situated on Schoeman St & Wessels St, Arca-dia Park, Pretoria. For more information, call Curator Dirk Oegema on 012 358 6750; or send an email to [email protected].

‘Race’

Last Week:

Review of the weekFILM: 10 CLOVERFIELD LANECAST: JOHN GOODMAN, MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD, JOHN GALLAGHERDIRECTOR: DAN TRACHTENBERGREVIEWER: PETER FELDMAN

The name J.J. Abrams should be a draw card for any movie-goer, as this re-nowned filmmaker has been responsible for a good number of sci-fi driven horror films. But he, unfortunately, is not behind the camera this time around and serves only as a producer. The end result is a film that certainly has its moments, but doesn’t quite deliver on its promises.

John Goodman, an excellent actor of whom we haven’t seen much of lately, anchors ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’. He portrays Howard, a creepy, paranoid survival-ist who holds two people captive in his doomsday bunker on a farm in America’s Midwest. He’s weird and he’s controlling. He may also be lying about what’s up there beyond the bunker’s double-locked doors.

One of the occupants of the bunker is a young woman, Michelle (Mary Eliza-beth Winstead), who finds herself in this predicament after awakening from a mo-tor accident. It’s later revealed that How-ard had run her off the road and was now

“protecting” her from what he claims is a chemical invasion. All females over the age of 36 are turned into a soft vaporous liquid, which can be utilized as a disin-fectant.

With her in the bunker is Emmett (John Gallagher) and the film expounds a great deal of energy confining its ac-tivities to this well-stocked basement. Howard is a nut case and easily angered, especially when his two captives attempt various methods of escape.

It is something like ‘Room’, but that is as far as it goes. Other clichéd elements are introduced as the story progresses, but too many details will ruin the experi-ence.

Tension here is of the slow burning variety, as the two characters discover that there is a dark and menacing side to Howard and protecting them from the outside world may not be his main mo-tive.

For most of the film the hulking How-ard is a mildly menacing host. Michelle is a smart, resourceful woman, who is able to convert a crutch into a spear and a shower curtain into a suit. The third oc-cupant is ill-defined to the point of being almost inconsequential.

The film never really reaches its po-tential and at the end it’s a case of too little, too late

We have seen too many films of a sim-ilar nature and while the acting is good, the film never rises to any great heights.

Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman in ‘Eddie The Eagle’

FILM: EDDIE THE EAGLECAST: TARON EGERTON, HUGH JACKMAN, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN, KEITH ALLEN, JIM BROADBENT, TIM MCINNERNY, JO HARTLEYDIRECTOR: DExTER FLETCHER

Inspired by true events, ‘Eddie The Eagle’ is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but coura-geous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Although Edwards was never ath-letically gifted, from an early age he dedicated his life to achieving one goal: to become an Olympian. Ed-wards tried his hand at various sports and disciplines, before settling on ski jumping.

There were several problems here: Britain had never had a ski jumping representative at a Winter Olympics. And Edwards had never even at-tempted a ski jump before. He was heavier than most ski jumpers, all of whom started at a very early age, he

had no funding, very little training and his terrible eyesight meant that he had to attempt jumps while wear-ing glasses that would dangerously mist up mid-jump.

Yet his indefatigable spirit pre-vailed. Begging and borrowing equipment, Edwards was the sole British entrant at the 1987 World

Championships, where placing 55th was enough to see him through to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.

Calgary was where Eddie really took off, literally and figuratively. Although he placed last in both his events - the 70 meter jump and 90 meter jump - he became a media

darling (he was quickly dubbed “The Eagle” by the tabloids) and some-thing of a folk hero, famous for his unorthodox style, appearance and will to compete. It was only a mat-ter of time, surely, before someone made a movie about this unassuming hero’s life.

It actually took almost thirty years

for that to happen. One night, to-wards the end of 2014, Matthew Vaughn - director of ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’, ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Layer Cake’ - sat down to watch a film with his children. The film was ‘Cool Runnings’, the comedy about a Jamaican bobsled team that defied all the odds to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. “My kids were loving the film,” says Vaughn, “and I started thinking, ‘Why does nobody make movies like this any-more?’ I wanted to make a movie that you could watch and just come out feeling inspired. And I wanted to do a film I could show my kids!”

Perhaps spurred on by the remark-able coincidence that the Jamaican bobsledders and Eddie Edwards com-peted at the same Olympics, Vaughn turned his thoughts towards The Eagle.

Fifteen years or so earlier, Vaughn and his then directing partner, Guy Ritchie, had been sent an ‘Eddie The Eagle’ screenplay with a view to turn-ing it into a movie. That deal hadn’t worked out, but something about it resonated with him. “I thought it was charming, and worth making. Loads of people had bought it since, but nothing had happened,” Vaughn explains. “I tracked down the script, said I wanted to buy it, and three months later we were filming.”

FILM: Z FOR ZACHARIAHCAST: MARGOT ROBBIE, CHIWETEL EJIOFOR, CHRIS PINEDIRECTOR: CRAIG ZOBEL

In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desper-ate search for others. A fragile, impera-tive strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.Doomsday and cinema have gone to-gether from the beginning. While post-apocalyptic films proliferated in the 1950s and 60s amidst the high anxiety of the Atomic Age, they have surged again in an era of financial collapse, cli-mate threats and rogue states.

The question is hauntingly irresist-ible: what would our lives be like if the complex, high-tech society humans have built over centuries suddenly col-lapsed? Imagined Armageddon scenar-ios have ranged from the mythic to the comic to the brutally real. Often, they have been a chance for innovative film-makers to visually explore what we most love and fear about the world we live in right now, by fantasizing about how it might all be extinguished.

Director Craig Zobel grew up on such films, but his fresh take on the genre is distinctly of our own times. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of what ended civilization as we know it, Zo-bel’s Z ‘For Zachariah’ probes inward, to

the personal, domestic impact of how those left behind come to grips with one another as they try to start over in the aftermath. Zobel takes resonant themes - freedom, authority, power, trauma, memory, reason, beliefs, dreams - and strips them down to the most instinctive, raw human interactions, as he places the audience among a pair of lone survivors who confront the unset-tling arrival of a stranger.

The film required just three actors - but each had to be capable of exposing the tenuous inner lives of those who witnessed their external world being shattered. Acclaim for Zobel’s contro-versial 2012 film, ‘Compliance’, drew a sensational trio to ‘Z for Zachariah’ - Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor, fresh from riveting audiences with his lead performance in Steve McQueen’s ‘12 Years a Slave’; rising Australian star Margot Robbie, doing a 180 from her breakthrough role as “the Duchess of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn” in Martin Scors-ese’s ‘Wolf of Wall Street’; and Chris Pine, who reveals yet another side to audiences familiar with projects as var-ied as ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Into the Woods’.

For Zobel, the compacted nature of a three-hander allowed him to hone in on the heart of the story he wanted to tell. “I am most fascinated by human rela-tionships, how we communicate with each other, how we interact when cir-cumstances challenge us. What drew me to ‘Z For Zachariah’ is questions I think we all have: what would I do if I found myself alone on earth? Who would I be? How would I find meaning? Would I want to start all over again - and how do you even start a new society?”

Emperors Palace reroutes road race

Organisers of Gauteng’s ever-popular Emperors Palace Classic have rerouted “the race of dreams” for its ninth

edition on Sunday, April 10. With en-tries now open and high numbers of cyclists expected to roll out from the Kempton Park casino resort, the or-ganisers have opted to put safety first and exclude some high-traffic sec-tions on Rondebult Road.

According to race director Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events, the planned route change will affect both the 98km feature race and 40km short course. “Entries for this event have grown exponentially over the last two years, which is fantastic, but this has also made a route change unavoid-able,” said De Villiers.

He said the major change to the feature race would come after the traditional right turn at Carnival City. “Instead of turning towards Nigel and Dunnotar, the race carries on towards Heidelberg before making a right turn to come back on the R103.”

After taking the R554 and rejoin-ing Rondebult Road, cyclists would only stay on it for 7km before tak-ing the Pretoria road slipway en route back to Emperors Palace, said De Vil-

liers. “One thing that hasn’t changed is the general character of the race. The road routes are still fast and flat with good surfaces throughout and riders can look forward to a smooth-flowing experience,” he added.

De Villiers said improved safety measures, such as warning signage, more than 200 marshals and 150 traffic officers, would create peace of mind for organisers and participants alike. He said more than 8000 cyclists were expected for the weekend festi-val, which starts with the 20km and 40km mountain biking events on the

Saturday. Also on the Sunday is the Emperors Palace Kids Classic, which is open to children in the three to five, and six to eight years age groups. “The Circuit Spectacular brings the weekend to a close. As the name sug-gests, this 30-minute criterium race is a spectacular display of speed and skill by some of South Africa’s top riders,” said De Villiers.

* For more information on route changes, visit www.emperorsclassic.co.za; or send an email to [email protected].

The Emperors Palace Kids Classic is open to various age groups

ProTouch “Crit” returns to old Emperors circuitThe second leg of the ProTouch Cycling Club National Criterium Series, which is held in conjunc-tion with the Emperors Palace Road Classic on Sunday, April 10, will mark a return to the famous old circuit featuring the Chariots Statue.

“The support of Emperors Pal-ace has allowed us to reinstate the traditional route that enables spectators to witness the thrills of criterium racing at close quarters,” said Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events. “Not only have we received permission to remove the speed bumps on the route, the Gautrain buses will also be diverted for the two-hour period of the criterium to ensure an uninterrupted flow of racing.”

De Villiers said the crit at Em-perors had been running for nine years, but formed part of the new Liberty-supported series for the first time. “In the past we limited the standalone race to an elite field of 30 riders, but the series now incorporates all CSA licensed categories.”

After the success of the first leg that took place alongside the Berge en Dale Classic in February, Tony Harding of ProTouch Sports anticipated a great vibe at the event, which follows directly after the 98km feature race.

He said criteriums were fast and furious and added tremendous crowd value.

“One can almost reach out and touch the riders. Unlike normal road races where you only see the start and finish, the lap format on a closed circuit allows you to watch a complete race unfold be-fore your eyes.”

Harding said there would be a ProTouch Cycling Club Chill Zone presented by Liberty on the day and they welcomed enquiries as to the benefits of joining the club.

The Emperors Palace MTB Classic, which is presented by OR Tambo International Airport, takes place on the same day.

Rock the Craft with the alchemists of SA’s finest brews Architects of SA’s finest brews, ci-

ders, craft spirits and wines come to-gether in a theatre of brewing excel-lence annually to celebrate the best that South Africa has to offer in our country’s biggest craft beer festival – SA on Tap which is now set to be hosted at Montecasino on April 8.

2016’s festival is the 10th edition of SA on Tap and will feature more than 27 of the country’s top brewer-ies all picked out by the public, off the back of the first ever indepen-dently judged South African Craft Brew Awards in 2015. This saw ev-ery brewery go head to head over a year long competition, judged by the public and a select panel of judges. To add to the occasion, a handful of alchemists have been selected in their own right of distillery’s, cider houses, wine farms and a line up

of food trucks have been chosen to compliment the brews on offer.

Visitors to the 2016 festival will not only be spoilt by the over 180 brews on offer, but all breweries have also been challenged to cre-ate unique seasonal one-off mas-terpieces fit for the occasion. Eager enthusiasts can meet and greet the brewer themselves, while newbies can indulge in and learn about the incredible array of aromas and fla-vours that are synonymous with craft beer inside one of the brew seminars available.

The festival will also feature a line up of several South African bands like Gangs of Ballet, Shaun Jacobs Band, Josh Wantie and Jaryd Smith.

My mother used to be the Queen of Tarts. Before you jump to any unsa-voury conclusions (espe-

cially since the focus this week is on confectionary), let me clarify: Tart of the edible variety.

I used to look forward to Sunday afternoon teas when I was a little girl, because mom used to make a deli-cious, light and buttery tart shell and

fill it with coconut and apricot jam. Oh, the aroma that filled the house on a Sunday afternoon...it used to make my mouth water and by “wa-ter”, I mean seriously water – like a waterfall, almost. When it came out of the oven we could hardly wait for it to cool down.

While it cooled she would whip up some fresh cream that she used to collect from the top of the milk

and save it for Sundays. It was thick and buttery and once

she had cut big fat slices of jam tart for us all, she would dollop the cream onto that and we would all sit in silence and savour every delicious mouthful.

So, what is a tart, officially speak-ing, for those who might not be in the know; or for those unlucky souls whose parents might have had a zero sugar policy? Here’s the Jenny defi-nition: A tart is a baked dish consist-ing of a filling over a pastry base with an open top not covered with pastry. The pastry is usually shortcrust pas-try; the filling may be anything you want it to be.

This delicious Lime and Nectarine tart by Justin Bonello is tasty and delicious and worth a try.Let’s cook!

Lime & Nectarine Tart

Ingredients for the Pastry:• 100g unsalted butter 1 table-

spoon vegetable oil• A pinch of ground ginger• 3 tablespoons of cold water• 1 tablespoon of sugar• A pinch of salt• 1 cup of cake flour

Method:Preheat your oven to 200°C, then start combining the pastry ingredi-

ents. In an ovenproof bowl, mix to-gether the butter, oil, water, sugar and salt. Pop it into the (now hot) oven and take it out once the butter is brown (not burnt) and bubbling. Next, add the flour and ground gin-ger and stir until everything is prop-erly combined. Once cooled, push the dough into a 23cm loose-bottom tart tin and spread it out until the bottom and sides of the tin is com-pletely covered in pastry. Using a fork, prick some holes into the pastry then blind-bake for about 10 min-utes until golden brown. Allow the crust to cool, while you make the filling.

Ingredients for the Filling:• About 5 white nectarines, pitted

and sliced into wedges• Zest and juice of half a lime• A small chunk of ginger, grated• About a quarter of a cup sugar

Method:Once the pastry has baked, turn the heat of your oven down to 180°C. Mix together the sugar, lime zest and juice, ginger and nectarine slices in a bowl. Arrange the sliced fruit onto the baked pastry, starting on the outside and working your way to the centre. Pour the remaining filling sauce over the fruit, and then pop the tart into the oven and bake for about 25 minutes.

Ingredients for the Syrup:• Half a cup of sugar• A small chunk of ginger, very

thinly sliced• The zest of one lime• About half a cup of water

Method:Put all the ingredients in a sauce-pan, bring to the boil then lower the heat and simmer gently until a syrup forms – about 10 minutes.

Once the Nectarine Tart has baked, pour the syrup over it while still hot. Serve with whipped cream.

LG G5 coming to SA

LG revealed that their latest flagship Smartphone for 2016 will be available in South Af-rica from April 15. The device

will cost around R11799 and come in at around R629 on contract (de-pending on carrier). This will be the first modular Smartphone from the South Korean company with an all metal design, giving it a premium look and feel. LG has chosen to go with a 5.3 inch QHD display this time and the focus was to make it more ergonomic. So they have maximized the total coverage of the active part of the display as close to the edge of

the device as possible to allow users to operate the phone with just one hand.

We are all looking for good cam-era quality these days and the G5 does not disappoint. It packs a 16 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front facing camera. Here is the kicker with the camera - it has both normal and wide angle lenses. The wide angle mode will give you a 135 degree view of the world so you can capture so much more for those quality Instagram posts.

If there is one thing that really stands out for us it has to be the ‘Magic Slot’ capability. The phone is based on a modular design, so you can in fact pull it apart easily to up-grade things like the camera, audio,

battery and a few other accessories, which LG will be releasing. The G5 will compete with the Samsung S7 so look forward to lots more from LG this year.

LG South Africa has also con-firmed that Takealot will be a key partner for the launch of the device and its accessories with pre-orders on the website available soon.

World’s first Liquid Plastic Welder

We have all tried to fix something with glue before, whether it was your favourite plastic toy or a priceless ce-ramic object. The usual routine is to try and fix it and if that doesn’t work, then the item is thrown into the bin. Let us also not forget about the fact

that when we need glue, the only bottle we can find is a three month old one that has all dried up.

‘Bondic’ is a new product on the market that works where glue fails. Inside the tube is a form of liquid plastic that is water proof and heat resistant. The process works the same as standard glues, namely: clean, fill, cure, but uses a UV light to help it set. It will work on metal, wood, Kev-lar, ceramic and many other materi-als. Since it is plastic, it can be used to do a few more things, like mold making, filling, sealing and raised marking.

This cool product is now available in South Africa from mentality, an online retailer, for around R595. We would grab one as soon as possible - it really is “the next big thing” in adhesives and light DIY repair.

Keycraft – Clock

Educational toys are always great ways to learn about new concepts and technology. This particular edu-cational kit is made by a company called ‘Keycraft’ who are no strang-ers to educational toys. The kit con-sists of all the parts to make your very own 20cm diameter mechani-cal clock. Learn how cogs and gears mesh together, driven by a spring (no batteries required) to measure time. It even has a chime system. This par-ticular kit is suitable for kids 10 years and older so it is not too complex and the instructions are really easy to use. If you love Lego then this one is for you. It’s a great little weekend project.

Check it out at ‘The Gadget Shop’, or online at www.thegadgetshop.co.za, going for R329 online.

Happy Puppy Yoga at Gandhi’s Joburg home

Celebrate Freedom month with a 60 minute yoga class brought to you by Happy Puppy. Internationally accred-ited, Theresa Moodie will take the class at Satyagraha House (Gandhi House), followed by breakfast in the gardens and a tour of the museum.

Based in the residential neigh-bourhood of Orchards in Johannes-burg, Gandhi House was the home of Gandhi from 1908 to 1909.

It is now a registered part of the country’s historical heritage. Yoga bookings are open for Saturday, April 9 and include a lovely breakfast and museum tour at a cost of R150. To

book, send an email to [email protected]; or visit happy happy-puppy.co.za.

Happy Puppy creates yoga experi-ences for any kind of yogi looking for a class to remember. With 60 minute yoga classes held in some of Jozi’s coolest spaces and directed by carefully chosen yoga instructors, it incorporates different kinds of live music and always leaves participants with a little surprise.

Previous event venues included the Victory Theatre Stage, Thaba Eco Hotel watering hole and MOAD Ma-boneng.

The first Lets Swing It event of the year will be taking place on Satur-day, April 9, from 12pm to 12am. This time the organisers are taking over one of Jozi’s hottest inner city venues, the iconic and much loved Carfax.

The side street (Main Stage) will be transformed into a picnic setting complete with astro turf, picnic bas-kets (pre-booked), gourmet street and market food, arts and crafts and a secure kids play area with loads to keep the little ones busy, including face painting, jumping castles, pup-pet shows and sand art.

While the organisers were reluc-tant to enforce a dress code, they do strongly believe that dressing up will significantly add to the enjoyment of visitors to their events, while add-ing to the ambience for everyone

else. Interested parties wanting to attend are encouraged to make an effort. Various prizes will be handed out to the best dressed male and fe-male for the themes, namely “1920s Swing” and “1950s Rockabilly”.

Confirmed lineup of acts for the Main Stage, which will carry the “1920s Swing” theme, are:
