For 15 years the i-KNOW Data-Driven Future Conference has brought together the best minds of science and industry. Together we have successfully shaped research and practice on how knowledge and data are best leveraged in business and industry, and how knowledge technologies shape this relationship. We connect users, technology experts and solution providers to discuss the topics of big data and data-driven business.

The Industry Perspective: Digitalisation and networking are changing the value creation model in many industrial sectors. In production, Industry 4.0 creates flexibility and efficiency. In media, digital transformation shifts the focus from content to services. Data-driven methods replace traditional processes everywhere. We offer you two days of the latest information from renowned science and industry experts. Enjoy the exchange of experience in a relaxed atmosphere! Be part of our innovation community!

The Scientific Perspective: Knowledge Technologies have dramatically changed over this period. i-KNOW 2016 aims at advancing research at the intersection of disciplines such as Knowledge Discovery, Semantics, Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Social (Semantic) and Ubiquitous Computing. The goal of integrating these approaches is to augment human intelligence by designing tools and services which interact naturally with humans, learn from their experiences and generate and evaluate evidence-based hypotheses – following the cognitive computing paradigm. That is, we interpret cognitive computing as the convergence of various knowledge technologies research fields.

Since 2001, i-KNOW has successfully brought together leading researchers and developers from these fields and attracted over 400 international attendees every year. The international conference is held annually in Graz, Austria and organized by the Know-Center and Graz University of Technology.

PLATFORM ECONOMY

FOCUS & HIGHLIGHTSi-KNOW DATA-DRIVEN FUTURE CONFERENCE

COOPERATION AS THE KEY TO RETAINING OUR BIG DATA ADVANTAGE

Big Data is a simple but powerful umbrella term covering research and development in a wide range of fields, from data management to artificial intelligence up to information security. No single company or research institution alone can provide all the components required to power the incredible momentum which the digital transformation of our economy has sustained. Thus, European research into Big Data is characterized by collaboration between science and industry on all levels. This track reports on recent advances in Big Data research and on the networks enabling further investigation of this crucial topic. Find out how to become part of tomorrow’s Big Data research and development networks!

FOCUS DAY 2

KNOW-CENTER GRAZ

BIG DATA TRENDS & NETWORKS

EUROPEAN NETWORK OF NATIONAL CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE DEDICATED TO RESEARCH IN BIG DATA AND DATA SCIENCE

The first networking meeting of all National Centers of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to Research in Big Data and Data Science in Europe collocated will take place at the i-KNOW 2016 Conference in Graz.

Europe is home to more than 50 CoEs that perform cutting edge research and drive the development and evolution of all aspects of Big Data. Each of these CoEs approaches Big Data from a different scientific background and with a different focus. Each of these centers alone can only cover a small part of the whole Big Data picture, but together their competences can define the data-driven Future of Europe. In addition, many of them also act as innovation engines to the local economy. However, European companies are not sufficiently aware of this asset. Main focus of the Center of Excellence (CoE) Network will be research topics and how they can be transferred into relevant industries. In the future, exchange of academic expertise across the CoE Network will support further research, enable the role-out of promising projects across Europe, and strengthen the European economy.

This initiative is funded by BMWI (Smart Data Forum, Germany) and BMVIT (Austria) and coordinated by Prof. Stefanie Lindstaedt (TU Graz & Know-Center, www.know-center.at) and Prof. Volker Markl (TU Berlin & Berlin Big Data Center, www.smartdataforum.de).

NEW BUSINESS MODELS FOR ALL TYPES OF INDUSTRIES

Digitally transformed businesses encourage the development of a surrounding ecosystem that blurs the line

between supplier, partner, customer, crowd and employee. Companies like Google or Amazon have successfully

embraced this development by basing their business models on the ecosystems themselves. The resulting platform

economy has become open to all types of industry, not just innovative technology companies who established this

trend. In this track, experts will outline the further development of platform economies and companies will present

how they harnessed the transformational power of platforms in their businesses. Let us discuss how your company

can profit from platforms, too!

We have managed to bring the CEOs of the Data-Units of LUFTHANSA, NOKIA HERE and the BBVA DATA &

ANALYTICS (a spinn-off of the biggest Spanish bank) to Graz. These pioneers analyze the data of their parent

companies and developed radically new business models out of them. Elena Alvaro, Michael Bültmann and Andreas

Ribbrock will give keynotes within the platform economy track providing key insights on challenges and success

factors of this ambitious projects.

In our brand new EXECUTIVE LOUNGE ON “RADICAL INNOVATION THROUGH BIG DATA & DATA-DRIVEN

BUSINESS MODELS“ these three platform pioneers encounter board members of leading Austrian companies. We

expect high information density, intensive exchange and a vivid discussion of the blunt practice.

The Executive Lounge is a co-creation of Know-Center, TU Graz, Platform Industry 4.0 Austria, Styrian Business

Promotion Agency SFG and the Federation of Austrian and Styrian Industries IV.

KNOWLEDGE 4.0 – KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN DIGITAL CHANGEORGANIZERS: Oliver Haas, Stefanie Lindstaedt, Ronald Maier and Klaus North

The Digitalisation makes disruption possible and demands change and reinvention in all sectors of organisation. In doing so the technical possibility to make big quantities of data and information available, to cross-connect it, evaluate it intelligently, communicate it, and visualize it have considerable effects on the managements of the knowledge resource in the context of organization and its polymorphic trade relationships with the environment.

ACTIVE LEARNING: APPLICATIONS, FOUNDATIONS AND EMERGING TRENDS

ORGANIZERS: Georg Krempl, Vincent Lemaire, Edwin Lughofer and Daniel Kottke

Active learning is a very useful methodology in on-line industrial applications for reducing efforts for sample annotation and measurements of „target“ values (e.g., quality criteria). When designing active learning algorithms for real-world data, some specific issues are raised. The main ones are scalability and practicability. Methods must be able to handle high volumes of data, in spaces of possibly high-dimension, and the process for labeling new examples by an expert must be optimized.

RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS AND BIG DATA ANALYTICS (RS-BDA’16)

ORGANIZERS: Elisabeth Lex, Roman Kern, Alexander Felfernig, Kris Jack, Dominik Kowald and Emanuel Lacic

The main topic of this workshop is the broad research area of recommender systems and how it is connected with big data analytics. Thus, it is our main intention to bring together researchers and practitioners in these areas to discuss novel trends in analyzing big data for recommender systems. Recommender systems and big data analytics are important research instruments at the intersection of the disciplines of knowledge discovery, Web & data science as well as social computing.

DAY 1Through the i-KNOW Data-Driven Future Confernce we aim at advancing research at the intersection of disciplines such as Knowledge Discovery, Semantics, Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Social (Semantic) and Ubiquitous Computing. The goal is to create cognitive computing systems that will enable humans to utilize massive amounts of data.

SAMI40 – 1ST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCIENCE, APPLICATION AND METHODS IN INDUSTRY 4.0ORGANIZERS: Roman Kern, Gerald Reiner and Olivia Bluder

Within the SamI40 workshop is bringing together researchers and practitioners in the fastly evolving fields related to Industry 4.0. The main topics of the workshop will be on secure data handling, smart production, machine learning and big data analytics, as well as application of the aforementioned techniques in intelligent decision supporting systems. In conclusion, this workshop offers participants a holistic view of different aspects related to changes, which are currently happening in manufacturing and related fields.

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION PERSPECTIVES ON INDUSTRY 4.0

ORGANIZERS: Mario Aehnelt, Viktoria Pammer-Schindler, Ralf Klamma and Eduardo Enrique Veas

Today we are facing a new era of industrial automation and interconnection which drives the transition of human workplaces. New technologies but also novel business processes lead to a shift of worker related requirements at the data-intensive manufacturing workplace on the shop floor or in knowledge-intensive maintenance field operations. This workshop aims to present best practices and lessons learned from researching and rolling out novel methods and technologies for worker focused assistance under industrial conditions.
