PARBHANI: Congress corporator Meena Warpudkar was on Tuesday elected Mayor of Parbhani.Syed Sami Sahabjan, also of the Congress, was elected Deputy Mayor. The Congress has 31members in the 65-member Parbhani Municipal Corporation. However, Warpudkar bagged 40votes, whereas her rival Alia Anjum had to be satisfied with just 18. Five corporators of Shiv Senaand one of NCP did not vote. -PTI

The patients admitted at theKalyan Dombivali Munici-pal Corporation hospital,the Rukmini Bai Hospital,Kalyan, have been facing se-vere problems since lastthree months.The patients are deniedproper food and left to de-pend on their relatives.There is no full-time physi-cians and radiologists.There have been no regularsonography check ups andin the hospital.Dr. Ashwini Patil, TheChief Medical Officer(CMO) said that she was notaware of these develop-ments and since it is a gov-ernment hospital, the pa-tients should have been pro-vided with the food.Many complaints havebeen filed by the patientsand their relatives regard-ing unavailability of doc-

tors at night and they do nothave radiologists for per-forming a sonography.“The hospital does notprovide the basic facilitiesto the patients. No food isgiven to the patients and thehospital premises are al-ways dirty. Despite severalcomplaints, no action hasbeen taken against the hos-pital authorities,” saidRamesh Jain, a relative of apatient.Most of the pregnantwomen were asked to go allthe way to the King EdwardMemorial (KEM) hospital atParel and Lokmanya TilakGeneral Municipal hospitalat Sion for their sonographytests.“I have been asked by thedoctors to go to KEM orSion hospital for my check-up. They claim they do nothave a radiologist to do thesonography test,” said a pa-tient.Dr. Patil admitted that thattheir hospital is facing a

shortage of doctors, staffand facilities.“For the last four to fiveyears we are facing theshortage of staff as most ofthe doctors here are on con-tract basis. Once their con-tract is completed theyleave. There are only twodoctors working on a full-time basis right now. Theother doctors leave due tothe mental exertion,” addedDr. Patil.Dr. Patil also said that shehas written several letters

to her superiors, includingthe city commissioner andthe Mayor. However she hasreceived no response tilldate.“Previously too many let-ters were written and re-quests were made afterwhich a medical officer wasappointed only 20 years lat-er,” said Dr. Patil. Dr. Patil admitted that thehigher authorities who areaware of the ground reali-ties have not heeded to herpleas.

Barely two days afterMarathi film-maker Atul BTapkir's death, the Pune po-lice on Tuesday arrested hiswidow and her adoptedbrothers on charges of abet-ment to suicide, an officialsaid here."They have been arrestedfrom their residences inKhed and Kondwa areas ofthe city on Tuesday andcharged with Indian PenalCode Sections 306, 34 per-taining to abetment to sui-cide, common intent, etc,"investigating officer R.A. Pa-tel of the Deccan Gymkhanapolice station said.

Those nabbed include hiswidow Priyanka Atul Tap-kir (30), and her adoptedbrothers Kalyan Gavhaneand Balu Gavhane.The arrests follow a com-plaint lodged against themon Monday by Bajirao Tap-kir, Atul's father. The arrest-ed would be presented be-

fore a court later in the day,Patel said.On May 14, Tapkir (35)posted a 'suicide' note onFacebook before consuminga poisonous substance andending his life in a lockedroom of Hotel President inthe posh Deccan Gymkhanaarea of the city.

After the post went viral,the hotel authorities sum-moned the police, who brokeopen the room door to recov-er his body lying on the bed.In his 'suicide' post, Tapkirhad blamed his wife and thetwo Gavhane brothers forhis extreme step, saying sheconstantly quarreled withhim and threw him out oftheir home six months agoand kept him from meetingtheir children.He also accused theGavhane brothers and someothers of threatening andthrashing him at his wife'sinstigation, which was alsocorroborated by his fatherBajirao Tapkir in his policecomplaint. -IANS

Pune Deputy Mayor dies of heartattack while jogging in morning● STAFF REPORTERPune

The recently elected DeputyMayor of Pune MunicipalCorporation and Republi-can Party of India(Athawale) leader NavnathKamble (48) died of massiveheart attack while he was onhis morning walk here onTuesday morning.He died on the way to thehospital. Kamble, a third-time corporator to PMC,was elected for the post ofdeputy mayor on March 15after the PMC elections heldin February 2017.His party supported BJPin the PMC elections. RPIwon five seats out of 10 theycontested for out of total 162wards. BJP won 98 seats.Kamble first time won ascorporator from Bhimnagararea in 1997, later in 2002

and now in 2017. He hasserved as a member ofStanding Committee.Kamble, who rose fromDalit movements to the postof deputy mayor, has beenserving RPI for more than 32years. Kamble’s family thatis originally from Shirdhonvillage in Osmanabad dis-

trict had shifted to Pune af-ter major drought there in1972. He started to work forAmebdkarite movementwith Dalit Panther when hewas in school in 1977. Hehad also served BhartiyaVidyarthi Chhatra Parishadand was city president ofthe same in 1980.He actively participatedin Namantar Movement torename Marathwada Uni-versity to Dr BabasahebAmbedkar MarathwadaUniversity held from 1978to 1994. He was also jailedalong with RamdasAthawale in the movement.He has been associatedwith RPI (A) since long andwas city president of theparty from 1990-96. He wasknown as close associate ofRamdas Athawale, Ministerof State for Social Justiceand Empowerment.

Sleuths of the Mira Roadpolice have arrested threepeople who duped a localbusinessman who wantedto earn some quick moneyby illegally offering newcurrency notes in exchangeof demonetised currency ofhigher value.An FIR in this context wasregistered at the Mira Roadpolice station in March,2017. However, the kingpinis still at large.According to the policeShabbir Bharman waslured into handing over Rs9.5 lakh in new currency bya quartet in exchange of oldcurrency worth Rs 11.5lakh. After taking the newcurrency, the accused fledthe spot, the complaint said.Following investigations,a police team led by PSI Ma-hesh Kuchekar under theinstructions of Sr PIJagdish Shinde nabbed asuspect early this month.Rounds of sustained inter-rogation led to the arrest ofhis two accomplices identi-

fied as Imran Syed (22) andIqbal Khatri (24), both resi-dents of Mumbai.However the prime ac-cused identified as BhaiJaan has managed to evadethe police dragnet. The ac-cused are believed to becronies of an influential po-litical leader of the region,sources said. A case underSection 420 and 34 of theIPC has been registered inthe context.

In a horrifying incidentwhich has sent shock-waves in the rural partsof Bhayandar (west), a36-year-old woman alongwith her mother in-lawmurdered the secondwife of her husband attheir tenement in Morvavillage on 9th May. Thedeceased has been identi-fied as- Geeta SantoshJadhav (32).The police have arrest-ed Savita (36) and theirmother-in-law VatsalaBaban Jadhav (55) fortheir involvement in thecrime.Shockingly the corpselied in the house for twodays, before the husband-Santosh Jadhav who op-erates a travel agencycame back home after atour on May 11 and in-formed the police aboutthe incident.Initially the womentried to misguide the po-lice by claiming Geetahad had died after meet-ing with an accident.Post mortem reports,however, flagged deep in-jury marks hinting at

physical torture beforedeath, following whichthe police detained theduo for questioning. Af-ter rounds of sustainedinterrogations, thewomen finally confessedto the crime.After tying the knot forthe second time withSavita, both the womenhad been living with San-tosh and their childrenunder the same roof forthe past couple ofmonths. Investigationsrevealed that quarrelsover petty domestic is-sues between the womenwas a regular affair. How-ever, a war of words onthe fateful night took aviolent turn with boththe accused mounted anassault on Geeta who wasapparently pushed to theground that resulted in afatal blow to her head,police said.“We have arrested boththe women and bookedthem for murder and oth-er relevant sections ofthe IPC. AROUND THE STATEDrug peddler held with MeowMeow worth Rs 1.10 lakhMUMBAI: The Azad Maidan Unit of Anti Narcotics Cell(ANC) has arrested a 48-year-old drug peddler from Dongriarea and recovered 55 gram of Meow Meow orMephedrone or MD drugs from his possession worth Rs1.10 lakh on Tuesday. The accused has been identified asAbdul Gani Abdul Latif Jeevani alias Papa Bakree. "He wason our radar for long time and we were waiting to catchhim red handed. He is a history sheeter and cases havebeen registered against him at different police stations ofMumbai including Nagpada," said an officer from ANC. Theofficer further added that Bakree is into horse-cart businessto avoid being suspected as drug peddler. He has beenbooked under various sections of Narcotic Drugs andPsychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigationsare underway.

BMC runs drive to check use of contaminated ice

MUMBAI: Tightening its noose aroundstreet vendors and hawkers usingcontaminated ice, the BrihanmumbaiMunicipal Corporation (BMC) hasdestroyed around 120 tonne of such iceblocks under its drive in the last onemonth, a senior civic official said onTuesday.The drive was launched last monthafter civic chief Ajoy Mehta took a

review of health measures taken by the BMC ahead of themonsoon season. "Outbreak of diseases likegastroenteritis and diarrhoea are directly linked toconsumption of contaminated water (ice) at restaurants,street food stalls," said the official from healthdepartment."After the review, the commissioner directed ward officials totake cognisance of rising number of cases of diarrhoea andgastroenteritis. We then formed teams along with Food andDrug Administration officials last month," the official said. Theteams inspected stalls set up by street vendors and hawkersand destroyed on spot such contaminated ice, which wasstored, the officer added. -Staff Reporters/Agencies
