Syed Sami Sahabjan, also of the Congress, was elected Deputy Mayor. The Congress has 31 members in the 65-member Parbhani Municipal Corporation. However, Warpudkar bagged 40 votes, whereas her rival Alia Anjum had to be satisfied with just 18. The patients are denied proper food and left to de- pend on their relatives. There is no full-time physi- cians and radiologists. There have been no regular sonography check ups and in the hospital. Dr. Ashwini Patil, The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) said that she was not aware of these develop- ments and since it is a gov- ernment hospital, the pa- tients should have been pro- vided with the food. Many complaints have been filed by the patients and their relatives regard- ing unavailability of doc- tors at night and they do not have radiologists for per- forming a sonography. “The hospital does not provide the basic facilities to the patients. No food is given to the patients and the hospital premises are al- ways dirty. Despite several complaints, no action has been taken against the hos- pital authorities,” said Ramesh Jain, a relative of a patient. Most of the pregnant women were asked to go all the way to the King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital at Parel and Lokmanya Tilak General Municipal hospital at Sion for their sonography tests. “I have been asked by the doctors to go to KEM or Sion hospital for my check- up. They claim they do not have a radiologist to do the sonography test,” said a pa- tient. Dr. Patil admitted that that their hospital is facing a shortage of doctors, staff and facilities. “For the last four to five years we are facing the shortage of staff as most of the doctors here are on con- tract basis. Once their con- tract is completed they leave. There are only two doctors working on a full- time basis right now. The other doctors leave due to the mental exertion,” added Dr. Patil. Dr. Patil also said that she has written several letters to her superiors, including the city commissioner and the Mayor. However she has received no response till date. “Previously too many let- ters were written and re- quests were made after which a medical officer was appointed only 20 years lat- er,” said Dr. Patil. Dr. Patil admitted that the higher authorities who are aware of the ground reali- ties have not heeded to her pleas. Producer Tapkir’s suicide: Cops arrest widow, two brothers for mental torture AGENCIES Pune Barely two days after Marathi film-maker Atul B Tapkir's death, the Pune po- lice on Tuesday arrested his widow and her adopted brothers on charges of abet- ment to suicide, an official said here. "They have been arrested from their residences in Khed and Kondwa areas of the city on Tuesday and charged with Indian Penal Code Sections 306, 34 per- taining to abetment to sui- cide, common intent, etc," investigating officer R.A. Pa- tel of the Deccan Gymkhana police station said. Those nabbed include his widow Priyanka Atul Tap- kir (30), and her adopted brothers Kalyan Gavhane and Balu Gavhane. The arrests follow a com- plaint lodged against them on Monday by Bajirao Tap- kir, Atul's father. The arrest- ed would be presented be- fore a court later in the day, Patel said. On May 14, Tapkir (35) posted a 'suicide' note on Facebook before consuming a poisonous substance and ending his life in a locked room of Hotel President in the posh Deccan Gymkhana area of the city. After the post went viral, the hotel authorities sum- moned the police, who broke open the room door to recov- er his body lying on the bed. In his 'suicide' post, Tapkir had blamed his wife and the two Gavhane brothers for his extreme step, saying she constantly quarreled with him and threw him out of their home six months ago and kept him from meeting their children. He also accused the Gavhane brothers and some others of threatening and thrashing him at his wife's instigation, which was also corroborated by his father Bajirao Tapkir in his police complaint. -IANS Pune Deputy Mayor dies of heart attack while jogging in morning STAFF REPORTER Pune The recently elected Deputy Mayor of Pune Municipal Corporation and Republi- can Party of India (Athawale) leader Navnath Kamble (48) died of massive heart attack while he was on his morning walk here on Tuesday morning. He died on the way to the hospital. Kamble, a third- time corporator to PMC, was elected for the post of deputy mayor on March 15 after the PMC elections held in February 2017. His party supported BJP in the PMC elections. RPI won five seats out of 10 they contested for out of total 162 wards. BJP won 98 seats. Kamble first time won as corporator from Bhimnagar area in 1997, later in 2002 and now in 2017. He has served as a member of Standing Committee. Kamble, who rose from Dalit movements to the post of deputy mayor, has been serving RPI for more than 32 years. Kamble’s family that is originally from Shirdhon village in Osmanabad dis- trict had shifted to Pune af- ter major drought there in 1972. He started to work for Amebdkarite movement with Dalit Panther when he was in school in 1977. He had also served Bhartiya Vidyarthi Chhatra Parishad and was city president of the same in 1980. He actively participated in Namantar Movement to rename Marathwada Uni- versity to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University held from 1978 to 1994. He was also jailed along with Ramdas Athawale in the movement. He has been associated with RPI (A) since long and was city president of the party from 1990-96. He was known as close associate of Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment. Three nabbed for duping businessman of `9 lakh SURESH GOLANI Bhayandar Sleuths of the Mira Road police have arrested three people who duped a local businessman who wanted to earn some quick money by illegally offering new currency notes in exchange of demonetised currency of higher value. An FIR in this context was registered at the Mira Road police station in March, 2017. However, the kingpin is still at large. According to the police Shabbir Bharman was lured into handing over Rs 9.5 lakh in new currency by a quartet in exchange of old currency worth Rs 11.5 lakh. After taking the new currency, the accused fled the spot, the complaint said. Following investigations, a police team led by PSI Ma- hesh Kuchekar under the instructions of Sr PI Jagdish Shinde nabbed a suspect early this month. Rounds of sustained inter- rogation led to the arrest of his two accomplices identi- fied as Imran Syed (22) and Iqbal Khatri (24), both resi- dents of Mumbai. However the prime ac- cused identified as Bhai Jaan has managed to evade the police dragnet. The ac- cused are believed to be cronies of an influential po- litical leader of the region, sources said. A case under Section 420 and 34 of the IPC has been registered in the context. SURESH GOLANI Bhayandar In a horrifying incident which has sent shock- waves in the rural parts of Bhayandar (west), a 36-year-old woman along with her mother in-law murdered the second wife of her husband at their tenement in Morva village on 9th May. The deceased has been identi- fied as- Geeta Santosh Jadhav (32). The police have arrest- ed Savita (36) and their mother-in-law Vatsala Baban Jadhav (55) for their involvement in the crime. Shockingly the corpse lied in the house for two days, before the husband- Santosh Jadhav who op- erates a travel agency came back home after a tour on May 11 and in- formed the police about the incident. Initially the women tried to misguide the po- lice by claiming Geeta had had died after meet- ing with an accident. Post mortem reports, however, flagged deep in- jury marks hinting at physical torture before death, following which the police detained the duo for questioning. Af- ter rounds of sustained interrogations, the women finally confessed to the crime. After tying the knot for the second time with Savita, both the women had been living with San- tosh and their children under the same roof for the past couple of months. Investigations revealed that quarrels over petty domestic is- sues between the women was a regular affair. How- ever, a war of words on the fateful night took a violent turn with both the accused mounted an assault on Geeta who was apparently pushed to the ground that resulted in a fatal blow to her head, police said. “We have arrested both the women and booked them for murder and oth- er relevant sections of the IPC. Woman kills hubby’s second wife, lives with corpse for 2 days AROUND THE STATE Drug peddler held with Meow Meow worth Rs 1.10 lakh MUMBAI: The Azad Maidan Unit of Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) has arrested a 48-year-old drug peddler from Dongri area and recovered 55 gram of Meow Meow or Mephedrone or MD drugs from his possession worth Rs 1.10 lakh on Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Abdul Gani Abdul Latif Jeevani alias Papa Bakree. "He was on our radar for long time and we were waiting to catch him red handed. He is a history sheeter and cases have been registered against him at different police stations of Mumbai including Nagpada," said an officer from ANC. The officer further added that Bakree is into horse-cart business to avoid being suspected as drug peddler. He has been booked under various sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigations are underway. BMC runs drive to check use of contaminated ice MUMBAI: Tightening its noose around street vendors and hawkers using contaminated ice, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has destroyed around 120 tonne of such ice blocks under its drive in the last one month, a senior civic official said on Tuesday. The drive was launched last month after civic chief Ajoy Mehta took a review of health measures taken by the BMC ahead of the monsoon season. "Outbreak of diseases like gastroenteritis and diarrhoea are directly linked to consumption of contaminated water (ice) at restaurants, street food stalls," said the official from health department. "After the review, the commissioner directed ward officials to take cognisance of rising number of cases of diarrhoea and gastroenteritis. We then formed teams along with Food and Drug Administration officials last month," the official said.
