Thoroughly Believes in the Great-ness of John Alexander Dowie

C. A. Suttie. representing theZion Printing and PublishingHouse, of Zion City, Illinois, wasin the city last Thursday, callingon our business men. Mr. Suttieis an intelligent and interestinggentleman, and up to four yearsago was a farmer in r i rempelaucounty. He was one of the earlydisciples of John AlexanderDowie and when Zion City was■established was among the firstto take his family to that place.He describesZion City as a placeof from eight to ten thousandpeople, principally composed ofthose believing in the doctrinespropounded by John AlexanderDowie,

Mr. Suttie was asked if he be-lieved that John Aleaxander

Dowie was the Prophet Elijah re-turned. to earth, and he replied;‘i am often asked that ques-

tion, and I say to you I do notknow, nor do I care. Idoknow,though, that members of theDowie congregation frequentlysit attentively and listen to Dowietalk, urging him not to stop, andthat I have sat from two o’clockin the afternoon until late atnight listening to what he said.He says things in a manner thatholds us all, and when he finallyfinishes it is with regret that wecannot continue to listen to him. |John Alexander Dowie may ormay not Jbe an Elibja—it makesno difference, but he certainly issuperior to all other men, and asa leader he has no equal.”

Zion City, according to Mr.Suntie, is a “place for Christianpeople. It is without doctors,iiquor or tobacco establishments.Drugs are prohibited, and thatour contention is right that thesethings are not right we have theproof that a number of ex-physi-cians are among our people, andall have renounced the use ofmedicines. We can cure any-thing by faith, and even cancerof the stomach is among thethings that have been overcome,Our people are all good people.Bad people do not come to ZionCity, because they are ostracizedand get out as fast as they can.We never have had a charge torpoor against the county, andi)here is no disorder to speak of.I never heard of a fight in ZionCity. We have a regular form ofcity government, and the peopleall help one another, and we area prosperous community.”

“Yes. I was a member of thpparty that made the famous tripto New York City, and I took mywife and four children with me.It was the best time I ever hadin my life, and while the news-papers declaired at thetime thatour trip was a failure, yet we donot regard it so. Our movementis world-wide, and we started acrusade in New York that willlive on and on. No one ownsproperty in Zion City, but ourpeople hold leases for 1100 yearsto the places and property theyoccupy, and to hold this proper-ty depends cnly upon their moralconduct. The leases provide forwhat really amounts to owner-ship. but the person who turnsout to be a ‘black sheep’ forfeitsMs rights, and it isalways pleas- ,ant to them to move. The co-operative plan is not being rigid-;Ly carried out by our people, aswe have been in deep water get-ting things started, but the lac.eworks and other* industries are

coming out all right, and eventually we expect to get down tothe plan of co-operative living,share and share alike.”

Mr. Suttie thinks Zion Citythe “chosen place,” and theZionites the “chosen people.”

Gasoline Street Lights.

The Times has been furnishedconsiderable information thisweek regarding the lighting ofstreets with gasoline lamps, andit would seem that this form oflighting ought to receive the fullinvestigation of the city author-ities in whose hands the matterof lighting has been placed.

The city of Ashland is usingfifty one hundred candle p>werlkrhts made by the ClevelandVapor Light Company, of Cleve-land, Ohio, being the modelnumber 12 made by that com-pany. These lights set up’havecost the city sl3 each, and theactual expenseof operating themhas been $1.35 a month. MayorWilliams and other city author-ities of Ashland declarethe lightsto be an entire success for* resi-dence districts.

The Royal Gas Light made at210 East Kinzie street, Chicago,is supposed tc be one of thebest things on the market, andthis company furnishes lampsof one thousand candle power, atfrom thirty to thirty-five dollarseach. They are automatic intheir workings, and do not needattention but once a week. Thelights have been tested in allkinds of hot and cold weather inmany places, and it is claimedthey can be operated at aboutone-third the price for whichelectric lights can be secured.The lights are absolutely safe, al-ways ready for use, and, and en-able cities and individuals to betheir own “lightingtrust. ” Thecompany manufacturing theselights claim they are superior toall other lights, and invite in-spection as to their merits.Among the towns using theselights are Valley, Nebraska andSalem, Missouri, from when ourcity authorities could doubtlessget all desired information.

The Automatic IncandescentLight Company, of Philadephia,Detroit, Boston, and North-borough, Mass., are also largemanufacturers of an automaticoutdoor lamp that is cheap andgives a brilliant light. Theirlights are in use at Earlville,lowa, Nortihborough, Mass.,Grosse Point©, Michigan, andother places.

A system of these lights of thedesired candle power for busi-ness and residence streets couldbe installed in Washburn at amoderate figure, if upon investi-gation they were found to beequal to electric lighting, and bythem the city could perhaps belighted for perhaps fully $3,5C0less than is now beiug paid.

Died Tuesday.John Enutf, the oldest son of Mt.

ar.d Mrs. John Enuff, of East sixthstreet, died Tuesday morning afteran illness of about two weeks withbrain fever. The funeral will be heldfrom the Catholic Church this morn-ing and the remains will be interredin the Catholic cemetry.

John Enuff was a Origin and activelittle fellow even though he was acripple*. He had an accident whenhe was a mere child that crippledone of his limbs and ever since hehas had to use a crutch, but thisdid not hinder him iu gettingaround much. It was his intentionwhen he got a little older to see if heCDuld not have something done inwhich he could have his limbstraightened, but death claimed himbefore he carried out his wish. His.pirents and familv have the sym-pathy of the community in their,sorrow.
