DOWIEITE C. A. Suttie oi Zion City, is a Washburn Visitor. TALKS OF THE GREAT MOVEMENT Tells The Times Many Interesting Things Regarding Zion City and Its People. Thoroughly Believes in the Great- ness of John Alexander Dowie C. A. Suttie. representing the Zion Printing and Publishing House, of Zion City, Illinois, was in the city last Thursday, calling on our business men. Mr. Suttie is an intelligent and interesting gentleman, and up to four years ago was a farmer in r i rempelau county. He was one of the early disciples of John Alexander Dowie and when Zion City was ■established was among the first to take his family to that place. He describes Zion City as a place of from eight to ten thousand people, principally composed of those believing in the doctrines propounded by John Alexander Dowie, Mr. Suttie was asked if he be- lieved that John Aleaxander Dowie was the Prophet Elijah re- turned. to earth, and he replied; ‘i am often asked that ques- tion, and I say to you I do not know, nor do I care. Ido know, though, that members of the Dowie congregation frequently sit attentively and listen to Dowie talk, urging him not to stop, and that I have sat from two o’clock in the afternoon until late at night listening to what he said. He says things in a manner that holds us all, and when he finally finishes it is with regret that we cannot continue to listen to him. | John Alexander Dowie may or may not Jbe an Elibja—it makes no difference, but he certainly is superior to all other men, and as a leader he has no equal.” Zion City, according to Mr. Suntie, is a “place for Christian people. It is without doctors, iiquor or tobacco establishments. Drugs are prohibited, and that our contention is right that these things are not right we have the proof that a number of ex-physi- cians are among our people, and all have renounced the use of medicines. We can cure any- thing by faith, and even cancer of the stomach is among the things that have been overcome, Our people are all good people. Bad people do not come to Zion City, because they are ostracized and get out as fast as they can. We never have had a charge tor poor against the county, and i)here is no disorder to speak of. I never heard of a fight in Zion City. We have a regular form of city government, and the people all help one another, and we are a prosperous community.” “Yes. I was a member of thp party that made the famous trip to New York City, and I took my wife and four children with me. It was the best time I ever had in my life, and while the news- papers declaired at the time that our trip was a failure, yet we do not regard it so. Our movement is world-wide, and we started a crusade in New York that will live on and on. No one owns property in Zion City, but our people hold leases for 1100 years to the places and property they occupy, and to hold this proper- ty depends cnly upon their moral conduct. The leases provide for what really amounts to owner- ship. but the person who turns out to be a ‘black sheep’ forfeits Ms rights, and it is always pleas- , ant to them to move. The co- operative plan is not being rigid-; Ly carried out by our people, as we have been in deep water get- ting things started, but the lac.e works and other* industries are coming out all right, and event ually we expect to get down to the plan of co-operative living, share and share alike.” Mr. Suttie thinks Zion City the “chosen place,” and the Zionites the “chosen people.” Gasoline Street Lights. The Times has been furnished considerable information this week regarding the lighting of streets with gasoline lamps, and it would seem that this form of lighting ought to receive the full investigation of the city author- ities in whose hands the matter of lighting has been placed. The city of Ashland is using fifty one hundred candle p>wer lkrhts made by the Cleveland Vapor Light Company, of Cleve- land, Ohio, being the model number 12 made by that com- pany. These lights set up’have cost the city sl3 each, and the actual expense of operating them has been $1.35 a month. Mayor Williams and other city author- ities of Ashland declare the lights to be an entire success for* resi- dence districts. The Royal Gas Light made at 210 East Kinzie street, Chicago, is supposed tc be one of the best things on the market, and this company furnishes lamps of one thousand candle power, at from thirty to thirty-five dollars each. They are automatic in their workings, and do not need attention but once a week. The lights have been tested in all kinds of hot and cold weather in many places, and it is claimed they can be operated at about one-third the price for which electric lights can be secured. The lights are absolutely safe, al- ways ready for use, and, and en- able cities and individuals to be their own “lightingtrust. The company manufacturing these lights claim they are superior to all other lights, and invite in- spection as to their merits. Among the towns using these lights are Valley, Nebraska and Salem, Missouri, from when our city authorities could doubtless get all desired information. The Automatic Incandescent Light Company, of Philadephia, Detroit, Boston, and North- borough, Mass., are also large manufacturers of an automatic outdoor lamp that is cheap and gives a brilliant light. Their lights are in use at Earlville, lowa, Nortihborough, Mass., Grosse Point©, Michigan, and other places. A system of these lights of the desired candle power for busi- ness and residence streets could be installed in Washburn at a moderate figure, if upon investi- gation they were found to be equal to electric lighting, and by them the city could perhaps be lighted for perhaps fully $3,5C0 less than is now beiug paid. Died Tuesday. John Enutf, the oldest son of Mt. ar.d Mrs. John Enuff, of East sixth street, died Tuesday morning after an illness of about two weeks with brain fever. The funeral will be held from the Catholic Church this morn- ing and the remains will be interred in the Catholic cemetry. John Enuff was a Origin and active little fellow even though he was a cripple*. He had an accident when he was a mere child that crippled one of his limbs and ever since he has had to use a crutch, but this did not hinder him iu getting around much. It was his intention when he got a little older to see if he CDuld not have something done in which he could have his limb straightened, but death claimed him before he carried out his wish.
