Whatever your professional pursuits or personal interests, Continuing Studies at Western
offers you an opportunity to “add a little” purple to your résumé and to your life. Conveniently
located in downtown London at Citi Plaza (formerly Galleria London), Continuing Studies
offers courses and programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners-from
two-day courses to 12 week courses, daytime classes and evening classes, face-to-face and
online-there is something for everyone.
In last year’s fall brochure we announced a new collaboration between Continuing Studies
and Adler International Learning for the delivery of the Adler Professional Coaching Program.
Building on the success of this collaboration, Continuing Studies is pleased to announce the
addition of the practicum component of the program to our London offerings, as well as
the addition of a new two-day course on Positive Change: Leader as Coach (see page 15).
In addition to new course offerings, we have added flexibility to some of our most popular
Professional Certificate programs by introducing new elective course options. Be sure to
check out the new structure of our Leadership program (see page 28), as well as the new
options in the Professional Certificate in Business Writing and Communications (see page 6).

Professional and Personal DevelopmentCourses and programs in personal and professional development are designed with your career and life aspirations in mind. This category of courses and programs can be further defined as follows:
Individual CoursesWith few exceptions, all of the courses that we offer at Continuing Studies can be taken as stand-alone courses. These courses offer the best of the academic world and the real world, blending cutting edge research and exceptional instruction with applicable skills. While many courses are not evaluated-no tests, exams or assignments-others do involve testing, assignments, and group work. Please note that there is no application process for these courses; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest.
Professional CertificatesWe offer a wide variety of professional and personal development programs designed to build on your educational or work experience and take your career or personal interests to a new level. There is no application process for our Professional Certificates; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest. Students are not required to enrol in the entire program, however the Professional Certificate will only be awarded upon successful completion of all requirements in a program.
Many of the courses that form a professional certificate have been developed to meet the standards of various professional organizations (e.g. HRPAO, PMI, ADR Institute of Ontario, CIM). For details on how you can use our courses to achieve a professional designation, please contact our office.
Continuing Studies at Western specializes in adult learning. We understand the unique needs of adults and design all of our courses and programs with those needs in mind. We know that one of the greatest challenges facing adults who want to return to or continue learning is a fear of failure, and we go to great lengths to provide an environment that will enable students to be successful, while at the same time challenging them to push their boundaries. Designing innovative, unique and exciting programs, and choosing exceptional instructors who understand adult learning are the most important things we do; this is what sets us apart as a leader in continuing education.
CertificatesCertificate programs are designed for practitioners who have at least two years experience in the field in question or a related area. These programs can be completed on a part-time basis over three years and help practitioners improve their career-related knowledge and skills and attain a recognized University credential.
Please note that there is an application process for these programs, however interested individuals may take up to two certificate-credit courses prior to applying for formal admission. After students have completed two courses, they are required to apply and be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the certificate program itself.
Post-degree Diploma ProgramsPost-degree diploma programs are designed primarily for recent university graduates or individuals with little or no work experience in the field in question. These programs are typically one full year in length and link career-specific skills with the more theoretical knowledge obtained in undergraduate studies. In most cases, these programs include work-site placements that provide students with an opportunity to gain real world experience in their chosen career. Please note that there is an application process for these programs; students must be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the diploma program itself.
Corporate TrainingAny of our individual courses or Professional Certificates can be delivered on-site or customized to meet the unique needs of your team. In the past, we have provided customized training in team building, alternative dispute resolution, decision-making and coaching. Please contact our office to learn more about customized training or to discuss group discounts for our courses.

Adler is a world-class organization globally recognized as a leader in the coaching field and is the first school in Canada to attain International Coach Federation (ICF) accreditation.
Professional Coaching is emerging as an exciting profession and is a must-have skill set for leaders, managers and business owners. The Adler Professional Coaching Program leverages insights from a number of disciplines including psychology, philosophy, leadership studies, adult learning, and neuroscience. Participants will obtain cutting edge expertise on coaching and how it applies in a variety of contexts, with a specific emphasis in an organizational context.

n Upon successful completion of Parts One - Three, students are awarded a Professional Certificate in the Adler Coaching Approach from Continuing Studies at Western and Adler International Learning.
n Upon successful completion of Practicum students are distinguished as ATC’s - Adler Trained Coach.
n Upon graduation (after passing the Certification Exam) students are awarded the credential ACPC - Adler Certified Professional Coach.

Prerequisite: Moving Towards Artful Coaching
Practicum is an intense and powerful learning process where you deepen your coaching competence through the integration of the following learning elements: supervision and feedback of your coaching; participation in Learning Labs (where client cases are reviewed, further exploration of coaching concepts occurs and deepened learning through interaction with fellow students); coaching clients (a minimum of 40 hours) and reflecting intentionally on your learning from the coaching experience; being coached by an approved coach (not included in the Practicum fee); engaging with assignments and additional readings. You will also increase your understanding of the Adler model and Adler Guiding Principles, gaining a deeper awareness of how the model and principles work together to frame the coaching process and experience.
Practicum spans approximately seven months from enrolment through to completion. During these seven months students must be actively engaged in the process of coaching and the learning elements weekly in order to move through the requirements successfully. Learning labs take place in a face-to-face format and supervision is done virtually over the phone. Students are only eligible to sit for the certification exam once they have completed all the requirements of Practicum and have accumulated a minimum of 100 coaching hours with clients.

Welcome to the wonderful world of language learning, where you will find enthusiastic, knowledgeable instructors, and meet others who share your interest in building bridges to other cultures. Business or travel plans may require you to develop new language skills, or perhaps speaking a new language is simply something you have always wished you could do. Well, now you can! Continuing Studies at Western offers courses in French and Spanish at a variety of levels designed to balance challenge with enjoyment.
The ProgramThe emphasis is on learning to use the language to communicate orally. However, reading is also encouraged, and some written exercises are assigned. Essential grammar is taught as the necessary framework on which to build communication skills.
Language courses are not graded, however successful completion is based on attendance of 80% of instructional hours.
Choosing your Level: The Basics
You have no knowledge of the language or have forgotten all that you did know at one time.
Beyond the Basics
You have some basic vocabulary and grammar skills, but still find forming sentences difficult. You understand some spoken language as long as it is slow, and the context is simple.
The Fast Track
You have studied the language a long time ago, but have not used it since. You are a keen learner and expect to pick up the basics again quickly.
Intermediate
You are familiar with and can understand the basic spoken language, but you wish to improve your own speaking abilities and depth of understanding.
Beyond Intermediate
You can converse in the language at a moderate pace, however you don’t consider yourself bilingual. You wish to develop your confidence in speaking and increase your vocabulary and speed.

Trois-PistolesThis experience of a lifetime offers a complete immersion in the French-speaking community of lovely Trois-Pistoles, Quebec. You will not only discover French, but live the language and the culture. Accommodation and meals are provided by specially selected local families. Adult students are most welcome. Prior attendance at a university is not a requirement, and courses are available at all levels.

Continuing Studies at Western has designed its Professional Certificate in Project Management to enable participants to develop the advanced-level project management skills of analysis, critical thinking and evaluation that are sought after in all areas of the global workforce. This rigorous program has been developed for future project management professionals and managers, supervisors, and highly motivated individuals with career advancement objectives.
The Professional Certificate in Project Management
The ProgramThis Professional Certificate program consists of five highly-integrated project management courses consistent with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBok) developed by the Project Management Institute, plus two business-related courses. The courses in this program have been compared to average undergraduate programs in intensity and time commitment. Each in-class course is presented using a hands-on, case study approach. Chapter readings and web-based presentations will comprise the regular homework, while classroom sessions will focus on applying the concepts covered in the homework. Online courses are structured the same way as their in-class counterparts, making it relatively easy for students to alternate between formats over the course of completing the program. The first course, Introduction to Project Management, provides the foundational knowledge and terminology necessary for all other courses. The courses have been designed to be taken sequentially, however highly motivated individuals who wish to fast-track their progression may take more than one course at a time. Prerequisites must be adhered to, and students should be mindful of the intensity of each course.
Not all courses are offered every semester in both online and in-class formats. Students are advised to plan their course timetables carefully and register at least one week in advance of the start of each course. Students are encouraged to contact Continuing Studies if they require assistance in mapping their program progression and completion.
All Project Management courses (both in-class and online) are enhanced with online learning. Participants require access to the Internet. Please see page 44 for details and system requirements.
