Professional and Personal DevelopmentCourses and programs in personal and professional development are designed with your career and life aspirations in mind. This category of courses and programs can be further defined as follows:

Individual CoursesWith few exceptions, all of the courses that we offer at Continuing Studies can be taken as stand-alone courses. These courses offer the best of the academic world and the real world, blending cutting edge research and exceptional instruction with applicable skills. While many courses are not evaluated-no tests, exams or assignments-others do involve testing, assignments, and group work. Please note that there is no application process for these courses; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest.

Professional CertificatesWe offer a wide variety of professional and personal development programs designed to build on your educational or work experience and take your career or personal interests to a new level. There is no application process for our Professional Certificates; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest. Students are not required to enrol in the entire program, however the Professional Certificate will only be awarded upon successful completion of all requirements in a program.

Many of the courses that form a professional certificate have been developed to meet the standards of various professional organizations (e.g. HRPAO, PMI, ADR Institute of Ontario, CIM). For details on how you can use our courses to achieve a professional designation, please contact our office.

Continuing Studies at Western specializes in adult learning. We understand the unique needs of adults and design all of our courses and programs with those needs in mind. We know that one of the greatest challenges facing adults who want to return to or continue learning is a fear of failure, and we go to great lengths to provide an environment that will enable students to be successful, while at the same time challenging them to push their boundaries. Designing innovative, unique and exciting programs, and choosing exceptional instructors who understand adult learning are the most important things we do; this is what sets us apart as a leader in continuing education.

CertificatesCertificate programs are designed for practitioners who have at least two years experience in the field in question or a related area. These programs can be completed on a part-time basis over three years and help practitioners improve their career-related knowledge and skills and attain a recognized University credential.

Please note that there is an application process for these programs, however interested individuals may take up to two certificate-credit courses prior to applying for formal admission. After students have completed two courses, they are required to apply and be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the certificate program itself.

Post-degree Diploma ProgramsPost-degree diploma programs are designed primarily for recent university graduates or individuals with little or no work experience in the field in question. These programs are typically one full year in length and link career-specific skills with the more theoretical knowledge obtained in undergraduate studies. In most cases, these programs include work-site placements that provide students with an opportunity to gain real world experience in their chosen career. Please note that there is an application process for these programs; students must be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the diploma program itself.

Corporate TrainingAny of our individual courses or Professional Certificates can be delivered on-site or customized to meet the unique needs of your team. In the past, we have provided customized training in team building, alternative dispute resolution, decision-making and coaching. Please contact our office to learn more about customized training or to discuss group discounts for our courses.

Foundations of Coaching

The Coaching Conversation in the Context of Work

Moving Towards Artful Coaching

I feel more confident in my ability to provide coaching to individuals

to help them be their true self instead of always giving the answer

or advice – as a facilitator/trainer it’s easy to give advice or give the

answer, but this implies that I have all the answers about what works

and what doesn’t. When you give advice, you offer an individual

only two choices: take the advice, or ignore the advice. Coaching

gives people ownership through their own choices – they know the

situation, their emotions, their motivations.

It is very powerful to be able to touch someone’s life through

coaching, sometimes just by listening, or through powerful

questions to enable them to use their strengths as they make a

choice to move forward and take action. People genuinely want

to change – sometimes they just don’t know how – a coach like

approach is experiential because it’s about them.

them to give real world scenarios with practical

examples.

and facts. Continuing Studies is different in that they

encourage discussion and debate of real-life examples

so students can apply the teachings in their work and

Conflict Management: Alternative Dispute Resolution (formerly known as Alternative Dispute Resolution)

COUrSE rEqUIrEmENTS

Conflict management helps parties resolve their differences without resorting to a more confrontational adjudicative process. It looks at needs, interests and solutions and can promote healing. It is voluntary, timely, confidential, and based on mutual agreement. It is designed to yield solutions that are adapted to the particular circumstances of individual cases and focuses on solving problems rather than imposing solutions.

Since 1987, Continuing Studies at Western has delivered leading edge training in conflict management skills. Using proven techniques and strategies, we offer a broad range of conflict management courses that enable you to develop in-depth understanding and skills applicable in virtually any situation.

I believed that through the program I would learn skills for effective communication in difficult situations, strategies to influence positive change and how to facilitate group projects. The program delivered all of this and more.

NON-NEUTrAL mEDIATION

ADRN6205 3 days

Prerequisite: Collaborative Conflict Resolution

Participants will learn skills and processes to assist in the resolution of conflict within their own organizations - how and when to assert their own interests and those of the organization while at the same time drawing out interests and options from the other participants in conflict, thus facilitating ‘buy-in’ to the solution. The program follows the mediation model, removing references to the neutrality of the mediator and also draws on elements of the negotiation model.

COLLABOrATIVE CONFLICT rESOLUTION

ADRN6201 2 days

This course introduces collaborative approaches to resolving conflict, as well as interest-based problem solving. You will explore various methods of conflict resolution and identify which approaches are appropriate in various situations. Practice opportunities are built into the course to enable you to develop your understanding and skills in communication and intervention techniques common to both mediation and negotiation. A special focus of this course is learning the ‘secrets’ of keeping the discussions productive and avoiding impasses that could stall or end the process.

FACILITATION PrOCESSES: BUILDINg CONSENSUS AND CrEATINg ENgAgEmENT

ADRN6206 3 days

Facilitation processes improve the effectiveness of group communication and thus reduce or prevent conflict and develop group consensus. Participants will learn three facilitation processes: the cards workshop method, flipchart workshop method and focused conversation method, and discuss their application in strategic planning, group issue analysis and/or problem -solving and conflict resolution. This program provides important skills for those working with groups within their own organization and also for external consultants and facilitators.

Note: For those who dislike speaking in front of large groups, focused conversations and flip chart workshops are used with relatively small groups. Your practice sessions will be in small groups.

SHIFTINg FrOm POSITIONS TO INTErESTS

ADRN6207 2 days

Prerequisite: Mediation Skills and Processes or Negotiation Skills and Processes

or Non-Neutral Mediation

In both mediation and negotiation, shifting the discussion from positions to interests is a secret to success. It is also one of the most difficult skills to master. This course will discuss techniques to accomplish this shift and how to differentiate between interests and issues. Participants will also explore the subtleties of conflict resolution: how to name interests in a way that is both accurate and helpful to problem-solving and the depth of discussion required.

Welcome to the wonderful world of language learning, where you will find enthusiastic, knowledgeable instructors, and meet others who share your interest in building bridges to other cultures. Business or travel plans may require you to develop new language skills, or perhaps speaking a new language is simply something you have always wished you could do. Well, now you can! Continuing Studies at Western offers courses in French and Spanish at a variety of levels designed to balance challenge with enjoyment.

The ProgramThe emphasis is on learning to use the language to communicate orally. However, reading is also encouraged, and some written exercises are assigned. Essential grammar is taught as the necessary framework on which to build communication skills.

Language courses are not graded, however successful completion is based on attendance of 80% of instructional hours.

Choosing your Level: The Basics

You have no knowledge of the language or have forgotten all that you did know at one time.

Beyond the Basics

You have some basic vocabulary and grammar skills, but still find forming sentences difficult. You understand some spoken language as long as it is slow, and the context is simple.

The Fast Track

You have studied the language a long time ago, but have not used it since. You are a keen learner and expect to pick up the basics again quickly.

Intermediate

You are familiar with and can understand the basic spoken language, but you wish to improve your own speaking abilities and depth of understanding.

Beyond Intermediate

You can converse in the language at a moderate pace, however you don’t consider yourself bilingual. You wish to develop your confidence in speaking and increase your vocabulary and speed.

The philosophy of the Leadership Program is that the role of a leader is diverse. Leaders exist at all levels of an organization and in many different roles. Effective leadership requires a leader to be a strategic thinker, manager, motivator, team member, mentor, and visionary at specific times and according to circumstances and to understand the difference.

Who is this program for?The Leadership Program is for YOU!

Anyone who wants to be on a progressive career track toward establishing a leadership role in their organizations and their lives will benefit from the essential competencies developed in this program. The program is designed to enable you to build on your existing personal and professional knowledge, understanding and skills in making the transition to leadership.

What you will learnUsing a highly interactive, participatory approach, the Leadership Program will enable you to:

n   Explore and discuss different strategies and theories of leadership.

n   Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own approachesto leadership and how these approaches will change as you progress through the program.

n   Understand the key role that developing and communicating vision plays in motivating others.

n   Develop your understanding of the skills needed for selecting, leading and developing teams.

n   Practice your skills in dealing with conflict and resistance.

n   Explore and develop your understanding and skills in helping others to achieve success.

n   Build confidence in developing shared goals and empowering others.

n   Understand how to align vision and strategy with a view to initiating and sustaining organizational and personal change.

How the program worksThere are two levels in the Leadership Program. The first level is called the Professional Certificate in Leadership and consists of three required courses and four elective courses. The courses are designed to enable you to build the skills and develop the insights required for effective leadership at any level of the organization. While each of the courses stands alone as an important learning tool, completion of the seven courses in each level provides you with a ‘building block’ approach to leadership success - skills you develop in one course are easily transferred and honed in subsequent courses. Students wishing to develop more advanced leadership competencies can take an additional five courses and obtain the Advanced Professional Certificate in Leadership.

.

Why Western?n    Our instructors include faculty members and researchers from

Western and other universities, in addition to specialists from leading global organizations.

n    Our “building block” structure has been developed from current thinking and cutting edge research in the field of leadership development.

n   Our unique modular approach provides flexibility and choice that enables you to structure the program to meet your own professional development needs.

n    Our participants come from differing backgrounds, occupations and levels of experience - this diversity maximizes your learning experience.

Not-for-Profit Management Diploma Program

I really wanted to work in a sector that was not only challenging,

but also personally rewarding. After my undergrad I was looking

into possible post-graduate programs and found the Not-for-Profit

Management Program at Continuing Studies and it seemed like a

perfect fit.

I think what makes Continuing Studies different is the small class

sizes, but more importantly the caliber of the instructors. The learning

experience was absolutely incredible for me, and has essentially

helped me to acquire a job that I love.

Post-degree diploma programs are designed primarily for recent university graduates or individuals with little or no work experience in the field in question. These programs are typically one full year in length and link career-specific skills with the more theoretical knowledge obtained in undergraduate studies. In most cases, these programs include work-site placements that provide students with an opportunity to gain real-world experience in their chosen career.

PMI professionals come from virtually every major industry including aerospace, automotive, business management, construction, engineering, financial services, information technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and telecommunications. Continuing Studies at Western has designed its Professional Certificate in Project Management to enable participants to develop the advanced-level project management skills of analysis, critical thinking and evaluation that are sought after in all areas of the global workforce. This rigorous program has been developed for future project management professionals and managers, supervisors, and highly motivated individuals with career advancement objectives.

The Professional Certificate in Project Management

The ProgramThis Professional Certificate program consists of five highly-integrated project management courses consistent with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBok) developed by the Project Management Institute, plus two business-related courses. The courses in this program have been compared to average undergraduate programs in intensity and time commitment. Each in-class course is presented using a hands-on, case study approach. Chapter readings and web-based presentations will comprise the regular homework, while classroom sessions will focus on applying the concepts covered in the homework. Online courses are structured the same way as their in-class counterparts, making it relatively easy for students to alternate between formats over the course of completing the program. The first course, Introduction to Project Management, provides the foundational knowledge and terminology necessary for all other courses. The courses have been designed to be taken sequentially, however highly motivated individuals who wish to fast-track their progression may take more than one course at a time. Prerequisites must be adhered to, and students should be mindful of the intensity of each course.

Not all courses are offered every semester in both online and in-class formats. Students are advised to plan their course timetables carefully and register at least one week in advance of the start of each course. Students are encouraged to contact Continuing Studies if they require assistance in mapping their program progression and completion.

All Project Management courses (both in-class and online) are enhanced with online learning. Participants require access to the Internet. Please see page 44 for details and system requirements.

PMI, PMBoK, and the PMI R.E.P. logo are marks of the Project Management Institute Inc.

The real world experiences shared by peers in all of the classes enhanced my learning experience. The teachers and their creative teaching model were interesting and exciting to be a part of.

Professional Certificate in Project Management

I have decided to take the Project Management course at Western

as I work towards writing my PMI certification. I was looking for a

course that would compliment the Architecture and Mechanical

Engineering that I have already acquired, as well as being a

universal tool to add to my resume, help market myself and be

beneficial to my future endeavors. The knowledge and experience

gained through this course would be an asset in my current place

of employment, as well as opening up opportunities in the future.

My experience with the Continuing Studies program here at

Western has made me wonder why I never went to University in

the first place. The people I have met in my classes come from

many different work backgrounds and offer a various range of

experience from beginner and individuals looking to get started, to

those who are experienced and are looking for that advancement

within their place of business. The instructors, too, have been very

knowledgeable of the topics at hand and have been able to share

many insightful stories of their experiences in the workforce.
