PIONEER GUN CLUB – AUGUST 2014
It's been awhile since I've sat down and wrote anything in the Newsletter, seems like I just
get busier and busier around the house. I'd like to thank everyone who helped out with the
Gun Show last month. Theresa Camp, Jerry Van Engelenhoven, Doug Collom, Mark
McMahon, and Rick Drum. Jerry pulled a double shift!! If anyone would like to take over
organizing help for the Gun Show please let us know. It fell into my lap and I'd love to pass it
along.
We do have a new Member being voted into the club this month, Julie Golob!! Julie is the
Captain of Smith and Wesson’s Shooting Team and is one of the most accomplished
professional shooters in the world!!! When her sponsor sent her reference over I recognized
her name immediately lol...yes I'm one of those guys who records every gun television show
known to man. She is on Impossible Shots every week along with doing appearances on
several other shows as well. I had the chance to see her in action the other day. Julie should have been voted in last
month but due to a scheduling conflict she wasn't able to attend the general meeting to do so. She took it in stride and
will be at the meeting this month to be voted in. It actually worked out well for me since I got to open the range for her
so she could be interviewed for a new movie coming out in January titled Targeted. It's a NRA sponsored movie and
will be in over 800 theaters. She sat down for a one-on-one and then did a little shooting. Julie is a sweetheart. She's the
same in person as she is on TV, down to earth,
approachable and sharp as a tack. I really wanted to take
her over to the falling plates and race her but it was hot
and then there's that whole getting beat by a girl thing!!
So… Pioneer Gun Club will get a shout out in the credits
and I think that's pretty cool. Thanks Julie, and welcome
to the club.
On another note, I just returned from the NRA's
Whittington Center a few days ago and that was a blast.
My best friend’s family has been going out there every
year since 1984 and it was my 2nd time with them, the
last one being 21 years ago. Shooting 1000 yards is
ADDICTING!!!! I know I push for us to extend the range
and after shooting at 1000 yards, I'll probably see what I
have to do to push a little harder. Shooting 200 meters
with my 1911, Glock 17 and my Ruger Blackhawk 45c was a blast as well. Ken Keifer was out there shooting in the
Rocky Mountain PPC Nationals while I was there, so I got to watch him in action for a few minutes and sneak some
pics. Ken is another PGC Rock Star and I appreciate sharing my time with him on the Board.... Thanks Ken, way to
represent Pioneer, too. If you ever get a chance to get out to Raton, New Mexico, go check out the center, it's a top-
notch facility. One thing I did take from it is, if it's stationary, someone will shoot it. Pulling into the sight in range, I
walked over to read the sign they had up and noticed 2 bullet holes in it. I want to say I couldn't believe it, but yep, I
sure can. Carl Robertson would be going nuts over there also.... Get out and shoot and I'll see ya on the range!

PIONEER GUN CLUB – AUGUST 2014
There will be a work day on August 16th to clean up McBride and get
ready for the National Cast Bullet match in September. We’ll be doing
repairs and general spiffing up of the range. Come and help make
McBride the best ranges in the country. There’s work for all skill levels
and abilities, so come on out!
Brickyard Managed Deer Hunt drawing will be held at the
Brickyard range on September 10th at 7pm. There is a 20 hunter limit per
the MDC. If more than 20 hunters show we will draw to see who gets to
draw. McBride Turkey hunt drawing will be at the Brickyard range on
September 24th at 7 pm. McBride Deer hunt drawing will be held at the
Brickyard range on October 22nd at 7pm. There will be a Match Fee of
$15.00 for each drawing. Please try to bring exact change or check. Contact
Terry Wright for any questions.
The Annual Pioneer Swap Meet will take place at the Brickyard on August 2nd
beginning at 8 am. Come early to set up and to buy stuff. Bring any firearm
related items, including firearms, but remember your sales are between you and
the buyer and the Club has nothing to do with it. All Federal and State, Local
laws must be followed. Try to leave the jewelry and furniture at home.
The weather will probably be hot again and in the past when this happens the
swap meet is usually over around 1 or 2 o’clock. Bring a table or sell from the
back of your truck/vehicle. A shade umbrella would also help. On a personal
note, I like old shooting books if anyone has some. SEE YOU THERE!
3 PIONEER GUN CLUB – AUGUST 2014
Work Day: There will be a work day on August 16th to clean up
the range and get ready for the National Cast Bullet match. Come
and help make the range the best one in the country.
PPC/Bullseye Building: Still some work to be done. Come
and help.
Women on Target Event: There will be a meeting of all
RSO’s and others who will help with the event on August 6th at the
Brickyard block house at 6:00 pm. The Women on Target Event will be held on September 20th. The cost is $30.00 per
person. This will include the club furnishing the bows, arrows, guns, ammo and a lunch. This is an Instructional
Shooting Clinic that provides a friendly and fun introduction to recreational shooting. It is aimed primarily at women
that are new to shooting but any lady may participate. The event will include rifle, shotgun, pistol and archery.
Participants may sign up for any or all of these disciplines. Many volunteers will be needed to put this event on. If you
would be willing to help, please contact Jack Smart or Connie Baum. Ladies may sign up now. There will be a limit of
50 participants. Sign up now.
Archery Range: There was a gathering of archery shooters at the Range on July 20th. The group was small but a
good time was had by all. Thanks to Phil and Larry Parks for putting the event on. There will soon be another one so
bring your archery equipment and join in. Don’t have a bow? Larry and Phil have ones you can shoot. Hope to see you at
the next event.
Priority List: One of the objectives of the club is the “safe and efficient handling of small arms” and that if we are
not safe we could be out of business. Remember that we are not only trying to keep our members safe but our guests and
neighbors. Keeping this in mind Executive Board rated the following in the order that it would like to see them
completed; i.e. 1 being the first done, 2 being the second done etc. The PPC/BE building needs to be completed first. The
suggested projects are:
Safety
1. Cover Rifle Baffles rows 3 & 4. (contract has been let and work will start as soon as possible)
2. Construct “safe area”. (will be done as soon as labor is available—current workers are completing the new
building).
3. Handrail for steps at Shotgun Range. (a member is in the process of constructing it)
4. Lights for shotgun parking lot.
5. Correct ventilation system at Brickyard.
6. Baffle pistol and utility ranges at McBride.
a. Utility range, Range 8 and raise South berm.
b. Range 5
c. Range 6
d. Range 7
e. Range 4
7. Berm on North side of Rifle Range # 1.
8. Sewer and water at Brickyard with a bathroom.
9. Folding target stands for the 200 yard rifle range.
Wants and Needs
10. Tractor, brush hog and shed to store them in for Brickyard Range.
11. Expand indoor range.
12. Metal target and covers for metal targets on Range 8 and Range 1
13. 300-600 yard range for black powder silhouette /high power.
14. Build more concrete benches on rifle ranges.
15. Proper small bore silhouette range.
16. New indoor range at Brickyard.
17. Skeet range.
18. Additional pistol ranges.
4
19. Underground rifle range at Brickyard.
20. Sporting clays course.
21. Assessment fee for projects.
The baffles on rows 3 and 4 need to be covered as soon as possible. The contractor will get to it as soon as his schedule
and the weather will allow. It was felt that there should be a good place to work on a firearm that could not be cleared on
the range so the construction of a “safe area” is priority number 2. Numbers 3, 4 and 5 should be easily done this year.
We have the bid for the construction of the baffles and now we need to get this done as fast as funds will allow. It is
difficult to get information from Kansas City about what is necessary to get the water and sewer into the Brickyard range.
It is being worked on as fast as possible. The others will be worked on as time and money allow.
Voting: We will vote on the funds to start installing the baffles on Range 8 at the club general meeting on August 14th.
The vote will be for your approval of $48.000 to start the project. We will also vote on funds to start installing water and
sewer at the Brickyard range. It will take approximately $20,000 for this to be done. Please be there to let you voice be
heard.
Monday Trap Shooting: The Monday evening trap shoot has begun. We start about 5:00 pm and shoot until we
are out of ammo or get tired. Just plain fun—no competition. Lots of BS. Beginners welcome. What have we done
wrong? While the number of shotgunners has increased the infestation of pistol shooters has nearly come to a stop and
we still do not have any rifle shooters. Hand gunners come back—we will not pick on you anymore. Come and join the
fun.
It was a hot day, but here is a picture of Bob Harris giving his time and sweat to making the PPC/Bulleye Range a
better place to shoot. If you can help out on the range there is always something to do. No one gets paid, but we all
enjoy a job well done.

Club work day August 16, 2014
The work day is open to all club members. We keep our dues low by doing the work
we can ourselves. The primary goal for this workday is to finish cleaning out the
weeds along the fence, repairing any target frames that need it and do some plumbing
in the club house (the kitchen sink is broken. We have a replacement faucet, need
plumber or time to do it). We will clean out the old firing line behind the club house.
We have a new deal for those who have a car too small to carry a weed wacker. We
have purchased 2 weed whackers, one on wheels and one hand carry. These are
available to members to use any time. Until we get a cabinet to put them in, you will
have to call me at 816-833-4636 to get to them.
Work is going on in the New Building. We are working Mondays. If you have time,
come on out and help. We start at 0900 HRS. The painting is done except for some touch up painting. We have a few
more pieces of trim to paint and put up. There is some plumbing to do and the building will be done. Ron DeJarnette, Sr
brought by a bunch of cabinets for the club.
Soon it will be time to look for some tools to put in the building both hand and power tools. So if you have any extra
good tools that need a good home, let us know.
I would like to thank the following people who have given their time to help your club. James Smoots, Dennis Bruna, Richard Muir, Bob Hudson, Joe Tapko, Terry Wright, Jack Smart, and Fran McComb. I am selling hats to raise money for Maintenance tools and things. The hats are $ 15.00. A few are in the shotgun building. I will have more at the swap meet on the 4th or give me a call if you want one and we will figure something out.
We could use some help at the Brickyard clearing rocks, sticks and debris from along the new road. We could also use
help mowing. If you can help with this, please jump in. We need your help. We need to give a big thanks to Sam Cox
for mowing the Brick yard. He could use some help. We also need to thank John Downs, Joe Tapko, and Rick Lance for
mowing Mc Bride.
Weed whacking help is needed at both ranges, no invitation needed.
Once again we need to thank Rick Lance for the grading work he has done around the grounds, especially near the new
building and range 8; also some may have noticed the berm on range 8 is growing. This is also thanks to Rick. If you
went on the walk- through of the archery range you may have noticed the piles of thorn trees. Yep. Thanks to Rick
again.
Jobs that need to be done:
Cover all the wood baffles to stop the weathering. (Contracted out)
Chalk holes in baffles at McBride
Paint outside of Brickyard Range.
Repair roof of Barn
Remove all old fences that are not being used at McBride
Finish cutting trees on berms at McBride.
Making the trailer frame into a bridge
Replace kitchen sink faucet McBride.

.22 Games & Competition
It’s the middle of summer and we are a few months away from another season of
the .22 Games and Competition. Watch the club newsletter / calendar and website
for updates. It is always a good time to be stocking up on your 22 ammunition for
this winter.
Our goal for these competitions is a safe and fun competition to help each competitor
to improve their marksmanship in a safe and friendly environment. Regardless of
score we want it to be an enjoyable and educational experience for all the
participants.
Any questions or comments:
Park A. Wood [email protected] – (816) 698-9149
By the time you read this we will have only one match left – the August Match which is
also the Club Tournament Match. This season has gone by fast and we held 2 less
matches this year. This is a trying match for .22 caliber rifles and you definitely learn to
shoot in the wind. Come out and take a look at us and see if you would like to try it next
year. All you need is some .22 ammo (standard velocity) and a rest to compete. Don’t
get scared off by the high price looking guns, everyone started somewhere.
Here are a couple of pictures of club members at the match.

9 PIONEER GUN CLUB – AUGUST 2014
It is summertime and a few of our shooters have been on
vacation and a couple even to Camp Perry. Our young shooter
Devin has written an article about his and Noah’s experience
there. We meet every Thursday at the Brickyard Range from 5
pm to 10 pm and currently have 15 young shooters, five of which
are on the Sharpshooter Shooting Team. On Mondays we meet
and do team practice, using air rifles and .22 rifles. The team is
progressing great and we hope to have a good showing at the Missouri Junior Olympic Matches in January.
Our fundraiser ended last month and I wrote a quick article about it. Here are the winners of the drawing: Elaine Rice, 1st
Place and her choice of a firearm was a CZ 75, 9mm pistol, club member and .22 Game Director, Park Wood won the 2nd
prize, a RCBS Reloading Kit and Richard Bronson won the Bass Pro Gift Certificate, donated by Bass Pro. Here are
photos of Elaine Rice with Charlie Rice (no relationship) of CR Guns of Independence receiving her handgun and a photo
of Park Woods with his reloading kit. Sorry no picture of Richard Bronson with the gift certificate.
Our junior program thanks both Charlie Rice and Brass Pro Shop for their invaluable assistance in making this fundraiser
a success. Charlie is a club member and a long time supporter of our junior shooting program. Members should stop by
his gun shop in Independence and say Hi and Thanks to him. Bass Pro Shop is where we hold our club meetings and if
you see the manager say Thanks to them also.
Recently Jason Austin and I went to the Bucksnort Range in Marshall, Mo to assist in coaching the July MSSA Junior
Shooting Camp. We worked with 14 young shooters from around the state and 2 from Texas. It was 4 days of
enjoyment, sweating in the heat and watching young shooters get excited when they hit their targets and improved. It is
important that we teach young shooters in the proper handling of firearms and get them excited about shooting if our sport
is to continue and grow.
Pioneer Juniors at Camp Perry by Devin Schwindt
Two of the Junior Pioneer Sharpshooters had the privilege of going to Camp Perry, Ohio to shoot in their first CMP
National High Power events. Noah Austin and Devin Schwindt attended the 3-day USMC Marksmanship Unit High
Power clinic, along with 160 other youth from around the country. In order to attend this camp, shooters are selected
based on their application and scores from previous matches. The first morning of the clinic included classroom work.
The topics covered were safety, fundamentals, data books, and effects of weather, zeroing, positions, pit procedures, gun
maintenance, and sportsmanship. That afternoon was dedicated to snapping in, dry-firing, and receiving position
instruction from the Marine Marksmanship Unit.
The second day was spent getting zeroes at the 200 and 300 yard line followed by the 200 and 300 yard portions of the
National EIC match. As typical for Camp Perry, the boys’ shot in a variable 15-20 MPH cross wind. Getting a true zero
was very tough. The Armorers worked on Devin’s sights for over an hour, correcting the rear sight, which was almost all
the way to the left, giving him too little windage adjustment to get a zero. For the remainder of the day was the EIC
Match. Devin shot a 94-3 standing, a 90-1 sitting rapid, and a 97-0 at the 300 yards rapid, for a total of 281-4 out of 300.
10
Noah shot an 85-6 standing, 90-0 sitting rapid, and an 87-0 at 300 yards prone rapid, for a total of 262-6 out of 300.
Noah was cross fired on at 200 yards sitting. He wiped it clean with 5X for a perfect score. Due to the cross fire, with
12 shots on paper, he was force to shoot an alibi. In the process he had a jam, so he shot a second alibi and ended up
with a 90. At 300 yards prone rapid, the same person from two targets over cross fired again and Noah came up with 12
shots so he had to shoot another alibi. He then had a fail to fire and had to shoot a third alibi.
The final day of the EIC match and clinic, the competitors shot 20 shots at the 600 yard line. Since there are no sighters
in an EIC match, 15-20 MPH cross wind made the first shots kind of rough. Devin shot a 182-4, and Noah shot a 165-6.
Total match scores were, Devin: 463-8X, Noah: 427-12X. This placed them 21st and 63rd out of 147. Considering over
90 percent of the competitors were in high school and college, Noah and Devin at age 14 were very happy for shooting
that well in their first national match. Bushmaster hosted a pizza party and awards ceremony for all of the competitors.
Devin was awarded 4 EIC points for being in the top 10 percent of all shooters without EIC points.
The final day that they were there, Devin and Noah shot in the Hearst Doubles. This was a paired fire match where the
competitors alternated shots in the slow fire stages. Each of the two competitors fired 30 shots, making for a total of 60
shots or 600 points. Shooting a 527-3X, they placed second (as results stand) in the junior division. In all of the 12
divisions, of any age, they placed 150th out of 270. Camp Perry was an awesome experience and the boys recommend
that if you have never been there, that you should definitely go. The vendors that are open down there have great food
and the stores have really good prices. The Junior Pioneer Sharpshooters are excited to go again next year.

National Cast Bullet Match in September
September is quickly approaching and the Club will need help in running the National Cast Bullet Match. Help on the
range, setting up the club house, scoring targets etc. is always appreciated.
Public Sight-In Days by Ed Camp
Our Sight-In days are in November and as always we need members to help the shooters out on the firing line. You need
to bring a spotting scope and rifle rest and a good attitude for the public. The club feeds you and waters you for your
time and you get to enjoy the great company of other club members, see some rifles you might not otherwise see and
help a non-shooter hunter improve his skills. Give Ed Camp a call if you can help out. 816-333-7559. Thanks!

GEORGE MONAHAN IS AGAIN THE
MISSOURI STATE CHAMPION WITH
AN M1 GARAND FOR 2014. The
Missouri state association started sanctioning
the state championship matches for the M1
at the Owensville gun club in 2010. Frank
Harles of the pioneer gun club won the very
first one with me being the senior champion
that year. Frank and I also won the State
Service rifle championships that same year.
[Overall and senior] I took the title for the
M1 championships in 2011 and was the
senior champion in 2012 and 2013.
Al Davies and I are currently running Hi-Power matches the fourth Saturday of every month
where you can bring out your old M1 and compete with me. It’s a fun old gun to shoot, and if
you don’t have one you should. GEO.
Let’s Shoot
Some Archery!
Join me on Sunday, August 17th at Noon to shoot some archery on
the McBride Archery Range. Try out the 10 target walking range back
in the woods.
If that is not your style, you can shoot on the field archery range. There
are three targets ready for action.
Where is the archery range? It is located at the McBride Range. Drive
past the rifle and pistol ranges and you will arrive at the archery range.
Bring your bow, some arrows, and bug spray and check out the new
ranges. If you don’t have a bow but would like to try archery, come on
out. I will have several extra bows for you to shoot if you want. If you have any questions, call Phil Parks and
I will be glad to answer them. Call 816-356-4786.
See you there……….

For all those shooters interested in High Power Shooting.
The High Power Division held it's June match on the 28th, with a
record turnout for the year so far. We had 15 shooters competing in
26 matches for scores to be entered into this years league match
competition. The weather turned out great this time, even though
rain went all around us, someone was definitely looking out for us
this time.
We had one junior this time, Devin Schwindt, that shot some real
respectable scores, taking the 2nd place spot in the Service Rifle class. If he continues to improve his shooting skills,
he might just relieve George from his top shooter position this year. George look out!
The top shooters in each class were:
GARAND:
1. George Monahan, 272-2X
2. Allan Ensor, 268-3X
3. Scott Yerganian, 254-3X
BOLT GUN:
1. Alan Ensor, 266-2X, With a 6.5 Swede
2. Larry Shipman, 61-0X
SERVICE RIFLE:
1. Will Sisson, 287-4X
2. Devin Schwindt, 285-4X
3. George Monahan, 274-5X
CARBINE:
1. Andy Cox, 208-0X
Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to the next matches.
New shooters are always welcome, so look through the closet, dust off that old or new rifle and come on out for some
good practice, competition, and fun.
If you have any questions, feel free to call either myself at 816-830-0222, or call George Monahan at 816-697-2221.

Any questions please call Cherokee at 816-678-7307 or Lonesome at 816-686-3840
Twelve shooters came to the July 12th match. A couple of our regular shooters
had gone to the National Smallbore Silhouette Championship in Raton, New
Mexico and we missed them, but they missed out on a good match here. We
even had singing practice (and some of us need more practice) at our match. It
turns out that July 12th is George Monahan’s birthday so we sang ‘Happy
Birthday’ to him.
Our matches are the second Saturday of the month . Bring your .22 rimfire rifle,
100 rounds or so of .22 ammo, and $10 for the entry fee out to McBride and join
us but if it’s your first time shooting in one of our matches – the match is FREE!
That’s right, your first match is absolutely free, and you can’t beat that price! The next match will be Saturday, Aug. 9th,
at the 100 yard range at McBride. Setup starts at 7:30, sight-in at 8:00 and the first relay starts no later than 9:00, sooner
if everyone gets their sighting-in done quickly.
PIONEER GUN CLUB – AUGUST 2014
14
I NEED A STENCIL that says
“Pioneer Gun Club” that can be used
with spray paint. Preferably with
“Pioneer” on one line and “Gun Club”
on the second line or separate stencils
saying the same. It would be nice if the
letters were 2-1/2 or 3 inches high. I
know that some companies use a stencil
cutter for shipping box labels and hope
a member has access to one. If anyone
can help, please call Ed Camp at 816-
333-7559 A smaller one just saying
“Pioneer” would also come in handy for
marking some equipment at times.
To the couple at McBride on Friday, July 11 -
shooting the Henry 45-70................
I came to your bench to talk with you as you were
packing up to go. I lay my green, Caldwell muffs on
your bench and just after you left I found myself
without them. I'll bet you put them in with your stuff -
not realizing whose they were. I was fine as I always
double up on the "ears". Would you please be so kind
as to tag them with my name & Pioneer GC and leave
them on the club house table next time you visit
McBride. Much oblige.
