Sight-In Days 2014 by Ed Camp Another weekend of helping the public with their hunting rifles has come and gone.
This year was slower than previous years by almost half the number of rifles sighted in.
The weather was very good, but was very windy Saturday and Sunday only light winds;
in other words perfect for hunting in. As usual Pioneer members came out and gave
their time to aid the public with their firearms. A round of thanks goes to the following
members for all their help: Carl Robertson, who spent both days safety checking the
rifles, Theresa Camp and Sharon Dickerson for cooking and feeding the hungry
members and public with Theresa’s wonderful chili along with nachos, hamburgers,
hotdogs and other snacks. Connie Baum, Ken Keifer and Derek Dickerson signed the
public up for the event and Derek even got to learn how to bore sight and minor repair some rifles. Helping on the
firing line, for two days or one day were: Steve Tuttle, Bob Parkey, Dave Johnson, Dave Kramer, Wilbur Hummel,
Mike Baum, Richard Brinkman, Roy Murray, Craig Bienfang, Dick Cotton, James Morrow, Bill McDonnold and John
Kramer who was the traffic director for both days.
This year all of the line helpers wore a red safety vest with Pioneer Gun Club stenciled on the back. It sure helped to
identify our members to the public. I want to thank Rick Lance for making the stencil for the club and since it is of
metal it will be used for many more items. We also had a member donate two gift cards asking me to give them to the
helpers for their time in helping; so we held a drawing late Sunday afternoon and Roy Murray and Craig Bienfang
each won one. A big THANK YOU to the member who donated these gift cards since he also does a lot of work for
the club.
All in all, even though it was slower than usual we had a great weekend and the public that came out left very happy
with Pioneer Gun Club, some even are considering joining.
Pioneer Gun Club has an informational booth at the RK Gun Shows at the KCI Expo
Center by the airport. We are always looking for members interested in working the
table. We need 2 people for the morning and 2 for the afternoon both Saturday and
Sunday. You get in free and can also browse the show for items you need. There has
been lots of powder and bullets showing up lately.
The next show is December 20th and 21st of this year. If you wish to help call Ty

etc. Please note: you may not sell any personal items from the Club’s table.
The next shows are in 2015 on January 10th and 11th, February 14th and 15th, and March 28th and 29th. We will need

$2.00 off entry fee.

Dues Increase: The club members present at the October meeting voted to raise the club dues to $200.00 starting in 2015. Half of the increase will go to improving or building a new indoor range and the other half will be dedicated to safety—primarily installing baffles on the pistol ranges. We are working of getting set up so you can pay your dues on your computer or phone. We have his some snags in getting this done. If you have any knowledge on how to do this contact Connie Baum or Jack
Smart.
Sunday and Monday Trap Shooting: The Monday evening trap shoot officially ended on October 26th. However, there will be shooting any time the weather is nice and people who want to shoot. Bob Calton will send out an email to all shooters when the weather is projected to be nice. When there are several shooters who respond that they want to shoot Bob will then send out another email telling everyone that the shoot will take place. If you are interested in shooting on Mondays be sure to get on Bob’s email list.
Damage to the Range: Because of all of the destruction anyone found shooting on the range without signing in will be asked to leave immediately. Anyone refusing to leave will have to appear before the eboard at the next meeting and will have their gate card turned off until then.

Days are growing shorter with sunset before 17:00 hrs. (5pm) Given
deteriorating eyesight making night driving difficult, and down right
dangerous, I will not be able to attend meetings until later in the spring of
2015. The good thing nobody has to listen to my bit..errr, complaining about
range damage.
Sight in days 8-9-Nov. went fairly well, excellent weather and more than
enough membership participation. Attendance was down a bit from 2013 which was down from 2012. We can only hope
more will take advantage of Pioneer’s public service in future days.
I have not found or been informed of any additional damage to Pioneer property, baffle & posts etc. Of course given the
great number of previous bullet strikes by negligent and vandalizing shooters it is virtually impossible to keep track. The
baffles of range #2 is beginning to look like quality Swiss cheese.
RIFLES FOUND
On 03-Nov. there were 2 rifles left on range #2. A very honest member turned them in to an E–board member and I have
them secured in one of my safes. Amazingly, nobody has inquired about them. They would have been left on the range 02-
Nov. Sunday afternoon, I was there that morning to about noon and they were not there then but found Monday morning. I
could not determine WHO had been on the range by the sign in book, either they did not sign in or I could not read the
names. If you were on the range shooting on Sunday afternoon 02-Nov. please check your gun cases. To claim these rifles
the owner will be required to identify them by make, model, & caliber and supply positive identification. That is the
ONLY way I will return them. Don’t mean to be a jerk about it, just to be 100% confident the rightful owner gets their
property. This ain’t like losing your stapler.
Speaking of staplers, I have 2, plus a set of itty bitty binoculars, and 2 aluminum handgun cases. If not claimed by 01-Jan-
15 I will keep them or give them away.

Our juniors are shooting very well. The Team of 5 air rifle
shooters went to Ozark, Missouri in October and shot in Precision
and Sporter class Air Rifle events. They came in 2nd for Precision
and 3rd in Sporting Rifle with over a hundred shooters taking part
in the Bass Pro Classic. Not bad for first year shooters in these
events.
Every Thursday the Juniors meet at the indoor range at 5:00 PM to train in smallbore marksmanship. We usually get out
of there at 10pm, as the juniors come in relays of 8 shooters each. They are taught the four marksmanship positions;
prone, sitting, kneeling and off hand. They earn awards as their level of skill improves. The current cost is $5.00 a night
and we furnish ammo, rifle and other gear they need. I hope we can keep this cost low as the cost of .22 ammo
increases. Now please understand, this is a year around event, it is not a come one night and shoot event. We train these
young athletics to become marksmen. It is not a come one night and have fun event. If you want this for your young
shooter come out to the Friday night .22 games.
We also have four young shooters working on their hi-power, service rifle, skills. One of the young men has been
shooting at the Pioneer Gun Club hi-power rifle events. At the November meeting CMP/Hi-Power Rifle Director Al
Davies handed out awards and Devin Schwindt earned himself 4 titles. He was awarded 2nd Place Service Rifle overall
and 1st Place Junior Service Rifle. He also awarded 2nd Place Hunting Rifle overall and 1st Place Junior Hunting Rifle.
His father, member Darcey Schwindt was awarded 3rd Place Hunting Rifle overall, so Devin outshot his father with hi-
power rifles. Devin is 14 years old.
Also Devin Schwindt and Noah Austin recently traveled to Fort Benning, Georgia, with their fathers, members Jason
Austin and Darcey Schwindt for a smallbore rifle clinic taught by some of the master shooters in the Army. This was a
two day clinic held for only a few of the top junior shooters in the county and our two shooters were chosen to go.

Sight In Days Survey Results by Ed Camp
For the past 10 years at least I have run a survey about what model of firearm and which calibers are used by our sight-in
day hunters. This year the results are tabulated. The top three most popular make of rifles are Remington (26), Savage
(16) and Marlin (8). In total there were 24 different manufacturers of rifles used. The results of the three most favored
calibers are: 30-06 (21), 30-30 (10) and 308 & 243 & 270 tied for third place with 9 each. In all there were 16 different
calibers represented this year.
There wasn’t any really rare or unusual rifles used this year. The most uncommon was probably a world war II Smith
Corona in excellent shape. One thing I did notice was the amount of rust showing up on some of the newest Remington
and Savage rifles. The blue on the actions and barrels does not stop the rust as in the previous years, these are on the
least inexpensive models they are putting out now days. So if you have one, check it carefully and completely oil it after
its use.

Yes, it is winter time and most all outdoor shooting events are on hold for the weather. ARA is
no exception; we will not be shooting until spring time – Be Sure to Check the Calendar!
This is Benchrest .22 shooting at 50 yards at a target sheet with 25 targets on it. We shoot 6
target sheets for a total score of 2500 points. It is off the bench with a rest and is a “wind”
shooting game at Pioneer Gun Club. You can use a custom rifle or a .22 caliber 10/22 Ruger
rifle. It can be intense or a lot of fun, you can go for national records or just beating your last
score. Practice and come out and enjoy this spring.
First off, I'd like to Thank everyone for making me part of the club. If
you don't know it yet I'm now one of the
Member Reps. I'm also the guy that lives across the street from
McBride. I'm also guilty of being the one driving
around on most of the equipment around McBride and making most of
the mess.
If you see me and have any concerns or suggestions I can help you
with Please flag me down.
I've got a few pet projects I am working on and can always use some help.
We've got No Trespassing signs that need to be posted around the property. I already have the signs and will provide
whatever tools needed.
I also need some guys to do some concrete work in a form I built for shooting benches. It would be best to be someone
coming out this way anyway because it would only be about an hour at a time.
As most of you have heard we are having trouble with people getting locked in the ranges with out a way to get out.
Most recently this resulted in the McBride gate being damaged. I am looking for 5 volunteers that live within about
15 minutes of each range that would be willing to let us put their contact info up to call and let people out when
they get locked in. We will most likely pick the 5 closest ones for convenience. Email me at
Also remember there's always something to do at each range to make it better for all of us. Take a little time to tackle
a project even if it's a trivial one.

Greetings,
The 22 Games have kicked off and we are well under way for this season. The first
Halloween night special match we had a light turnout as expected. With it being a fifth
Friday it was an all standing offhand match; shooting Halloween themed rifle targets
and standard pistol targets.
Our first regular match of the year Friday, November 7th was a traditional round bull target match. We had 15 rifle
shooters and 10 pistol shooters. Ken Keifer took overall high shooter in both rifle and pistol.
In our second regular match of the year Friday, November 14th we had a pretty good turnout for being the night
before opening day of rifle deer season. The rifle targets were themed; yes you guessed it – Deer! I want thank
Mark Gish for his donation to the division to support Junior Shooters. Mark’s donation will be used to fund awards
for all Junior Shooters. Steve Tuttle & I will also help fund this for the rest of season as needed. Ken Keifer, again
took top overall shooter in both rifle and pistol. Thank you to everyone that has helped out so far this year!

Third regular match of the year is Friday, November 21st. We are off Friday, November 28th. The rifle target theme for
November 21st will be “Turkeys” for Thanksgiving. I want to wish all the hunters a safe and bountiful harvest this
season. Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels.
In December we shoot the 5th, 12th and 19th. The 19th the rifle targets will be a “Christmas” theme. Not sure yet what
I’ll think up for the first two Friday nights of December.

Pioneer Shooters
This month we will be at the Brickyard for our third match of the season. If you are
new to PPC, stop by our Brickyard practice session to get an introduction and
instruction to PPC shooting. Bring your Brickyard handgun, a strong side holster, 4
magazines (or revolver speedloaders), 60 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear
protection.

Pioneer Winter Matches
We have some changes coming down for our Winter season including prizes and a cash payback. Scoring will be on a
10, 9, 8, 7, etc. basis with the class winner taking 10 points, second place taking 9 points, and so on. This will keep
classes closer throughout the winter and interest higher for our shooters. Ties will be broken by X count. The class you
are in October 2014 is the class you will compete in throughout the Winter Season. Only NRA PPC firearms as
determined within the rules will qualify for the Winter Championship. If participation warrants for other handguns such
as .22LR’s, Optics or NRA Action, those classes could be included in the Winter Championship. As always, you are
welcome to participate in our PPC matches even if you don’t qualify for the Winter Championships. You only have to
compete in 4 of the 6 scheduled 1200 matches. There will be an overall winner, class winner and places down depending
on participation. 3 shooters in a class equals first and second, 4 shooters equals first second and third, etc. Get details at
an indoor match.
