No one thought about including me. I never thought about asking, she says. Girls just didnt hunt.Today Suzi is an enthusiastic bird hunter, the president of OKC Gun Club, and a mentor to many hunters and shooters. Her love of bird hunting has led her into a new calling, training service dogs for veterans. A Natural Leader Suzis involvement with OKC Gun Club began through her husband, who had served on the U.S. Marine Corps shooting team. When he joined the organization, so did she. Then a club event called Cowboy Action Shooting sparked her interest, and she decided to give it a try. The all-male group of shooters at the event was unsure about her at first. My second time, I brought chocolate chip cookies, she recalls. My popularity skyrocketed!Soon the men encouraged their wives and sisters to try Cowboy Action Shooting, too. It wasnt long before OKC Gun Club decided they needed more outreach toward women. I was the mullet who stepped up to coordi- nate it,says Suzi. From there, she became a board member, then club president. OKC Gun Club sponsors activities in almost every discipline of shooting. Suzi doesnt personally oversee everything, but you can of- ten find her at the club headquarters near Arcadia, supporting her fellow members. Women on Target One of Suzis favorite club events is the annual Women on Target Fun Shoot. Designed especially for women who arent very familiar with guns, the event gives participants a chance to handle and shoot a variety of firearms in a safe space. Suzi Rouse Expert volunteers offer instruction as the students rotate through four different ranges. Before the first event, the guys told me, Honey, youll be lucky if you get ten women,’” says Suzi. We had fifty-seven!Now the event, always held the Saturday after Labor Day, attracts up to four hundred people. The women are nervous at first, says Suzi, but by the end of the day, I love seeing how empowered they feel. Honoring Americas Warriors Suzis enthusiasm for shooting eventually led her into hunting. When her husband surprised her with a young bird dog, she wasnt sure she wanted it. But she soon fell in love with the puppy and the sport of bird hunting. Suzis husband lost a three-year battle with melanoma in 2019. Needing a new focus, she said yes when a friend asked her to train service dogs for veterans through a nonprofit organization: Honoring Americas Warriors. My friend told me if I could train bird dogs, I could do this, she says. The dogs, which are owned by Honoring Americas Warriors, live with the vets from the time theyre just three months old. Veterans bring their dogs for ongoing training several times a week. Suzi s job is to coordinate the training and assist both dogs and veterans in becoming a great working team. Suzi has come a long way from the little girl who watched the guys go hunting without her. But despite all her accomplishments, what she values most is the lives she has touched. I need to feel like Im giving something back, she says. Whether shes training a ser- vice dog team or encouraging the next generation of sport shooters, she is fulfilling that mission.

Pistol Caliber Carbine Attention Pistol Caliber Carbine shooters. NRA Action Pistol division is going to allow PCC to shoot in their club events. You will need all safety equipment and approximately 200 rounds of ammo. We shoot on the first Saturday of each month. Cost is $20.00 non members and $15.00 for members.

Need more information call Chuck at 405-812-8223 or Si at 405-990-7015

Everyone has an AR-15! The Highpower division now offers two types of matches to develop your abilities from 200 and 300 yards with your AR-15 or AR-10, or most any other semiautomatic rifle, need not be .223 or .308. Both matches are shot using electronic targets which show both your shot location and down range velocity. Be sure to bring a smartphone or a tablet so you can see your shots! The first match is called a “GSM” match, for Garand, Springfield, Military arms, fired at the 200 yard line with slow fire and rapid fire stages - shot from three po-sitions, Prone, Sitting, and Standing. You’ll need two magazines and 55 rounds of ammo for this match. GSM match registration is conducted at the 200 yard line at 8:00 with firing starting at 9:00. After the GSM match is completed, registration starts for the Tactical-AR match. Shooting starts at 12:30. Fired at the 300 yard line, this match is shot off of bi-pods or backpacks for support and stability, or you can sling up if you want too. This match requires 51 rounds and is single load- ed (we call it slow fire). It’s an informal match so show up with what you’ve got and we’ll get you some good training.

We know ammo is scarce, but It takes a lot of ammo to compensate for lack of marksmanship skills. Make them count when it counts. Take a look at our match programs for more information on our web page at

https://www.okcgunclub.org/high-power-rifle-division.html Or call Tommy Sims with your questions at (405)613-1421.

Here’s our schedule, all Sundays: September 12

October 10 November 14 December 5

Come see us and we’ll get you shooting!

Quote of the Month

Freedom is binary. One either has it or one does not. There are no “shades” of

Freedom. When someone says “OH, sure I believe in freedom of speech, But.” Or

“Sure, I believe in freedom of Religion, But!”

Anytime one hears “I believe in Freedom of …” followed by “BUT” we know we

are talking to someone who doesn’t really believe in Freedom.

Confirmation of Fall 2021 Trap League •

First, I would like to apologize for the rather short notice for the fall league. • The Shotgun Division of the Oklahoma City Gun Club will host an eight (8) week Fall Trap League beginning Monday September 13, 2021 and ending on Monday November 1, 2021. The league is open to all OKC Gun Club members, their families and friends. • The league welcomes all skill levels of shooters using any type of shotgun in 12 gauge or smaller. • Cost of the league will be $80.00 for each participant. League fees must be paid in advance as was done last spring. The payment date will be after Labor Day and before 9/13/21 on a date to be announced later. Payment may be made by check or cash. You will have the option of receiving tokens for the targets or adding money to your Smart Card. The cost includes targets and prizes to be awarded at the conclusion of the league. For various rea-sons, we will not be serving hot dogs this league. • Shooters will be part of a Squad of up to 5 shoot-ers. Shooting times will be 4:00- 5:00, 5:00-6:00 or 6:00-7:00. This schedule will accommodate 60 shooters. Each time slot can accommodate a maximum 20 shooters. o Each shooter will shoot a total of 400 targets; 50 targets per week. o The first four weeks of the league will be shot from the 16 yard line (Singles). o The second four weeks of the league will be shot from the 18, 20, or the 22 yard line (Handicap). All members of the squad will shoot from the same yardage line. o Squads with a combined average of 20.0 or more from the first four weeks of Singles shooting will shoot all their Handicap targets from the 22 yard line. o Squads with a combined average of more than 18.0 and less than 20.0 from the four weeks of Singles shooting will shoot all their Handicap targets from the 20 yard line. o Squads with a combined average of less than 18.0 from the first four weeks of Singles shooting will shoot all their Handicap targets from the 18 yard line. • Prizes will be awarded to individual members of the winning squads. The plan is to distribute prizes on Saturday November 6, 2021. • Shooters may make up targets, or shoot ahead for any weeks that they are absent. Please be advised that the shotgun ranges receive heavy use and may not always be available on days other than the regularly scheduled shooting times. The trap ranges should be available for makeup and practice at 3:00 on designated league days. All singles targets must be shot by sunset on October 3, 2021 to allow time for calculation of handicap yardage. All handicap targets must be shot by the end of shooting on November 1, 2021. Missing scores will be replaced with a dog score (shooter’s average minus two targets). • When registering for the league, please indicate if you have a group that you would like to shoot with and your shooting time preference (5:00 or 6:00). • If you are interested in participating, or would like more details, please contact Kenneth Mayfield via email (preferred) at [email protected] or send a text to 405-990-8881. There will not be a sign-up sheet in the Shotgun Division Club House. Please register via email or text. • AMMO: Cabela’s has been receiving shotgun shells on Thursdays. Sometimes there are several flats of shells. Acade-my’s website today said three stores in the metro area had shells with a 10 box limit per day. This is an observation and not a guarantee, but Dove season is close and last year most of the usual sources for shells had a lot of shells. Maybe it will happen again.

ATTENTION: CONCEAL CARRY HOLDERS Have you ever thought about trying to hit a target that is further away than 15-20 feet or that is moving and not static? There was a famous law officer that thought his officers should be able to hit their tar-get under four shooting conditions and at a more realistic distance. The first condition is shooting at a moving target. Think of a situation where the bad

guy is moving and not at 10 or 15 feet but at 30 or may be 75 feet away. Could you stop the threat?

The second condition is shooting from behind barricades. Shooting from behind barricades is difficult and again, not at some short distance but from 10 to 35 yards and with quick appearing targets.

The third condition is shooting at multiple targets under short time limits; and The fourth condition are shooting at targets at longer distances and shooting with

your weak hand only. It's important to be able to STOP the threat and PROTECT the innocent! These four shooting conditions / events became known as the Bianchi Cup. The officer was the famous John Bianchi. These events are now known as NRA Action Pistol. Here, at the Oklahoma City Gun Club, you can learn how to STOP the bad guy by practicing these four events. We shoot these events on the 1st Saturday of each month. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

Action Pistol Division

Despite the ammo and reloading supplies crunch, August saw good turnouts in all our handgun matches. We did decide to cancel our 3-Gun match this month; the interest is clearly there but the shortages make that game a bit harder on required ammunition. Hopefully the situation is starting to improve. We are sending out reminders and links to Practiscore to register for our matches. Pre-registration is not mandatory, but it really helps get matches underway in a timely fashion and reduces crowding in the club-house. Generally, registration for a match will open the week before the match and notices will be sent to the mailing list. If you are not receiving them and would like to be added to our email list, send an email to [email protected] and we will make sure to add you. The scores are as follows:
