■ I HAD so much fun at Dorset County Show and thought I wouldshare my pictures of the event. The two-day show was packed with things to do and see, includingtraditional elements such as livestock classes, equestrian andhorticulture as well as more modern entertainment including theDancing Diggers and Titan the dancing robot. There was also a canine theme to the entertainment with events suchas fly ball, gun dog demonstrations, the Dorset Echo-backed Dogs GotTalent competition and terrier racing, which I loved watching.

A very friendly dalmation was among the lovely new friends I made atthe show.

Poetry by stonemason engraved into plaques

WRITTEN IN STONEPOETRY celebratingthe glory days ofquarrying, pennedby a former Portlandstonemason, hasbeen engraved andlaid into dry-stonewalls on the island.

The poems, written bythe late ‘Skylark’Durston, were carved inlarge plaques of Portlandstone by WeymouthCollege stonemasonrystudent Ian Chalmers andlaid in walls next to theOld Engine Shed at EastWeares.

The Portland stoneworkwas kindly donated byAlbion Stone.

Managed by the PortlandGas Trust, the walls arebeing restored to their origi-nal design by teaching tradi-tional mid-19th centurybuilding methods to youngvolunteers from the YoungOffenders Institute andmembers of the public keento learn techniques from the

past.Dry-stone walling is

extremely durable butbecame seen as an antiquat-ed, laborious buildingmethod in the 1960s.

As well as being long-last-ing, it’s high on the list ofenvironmentally friendly

building methods – thestones are already there anduse no binding agents tostick together.

The Portland Gas Trust iscommitted to local initia-tives that support education, geology and the environ-ment.

The Old Engine Shed is aGrade II listed building thatThe Portland Gas Trustplans to restore in a mannerin keeping with its heritage.

Rachel Barton, trustee atThe Portland Gas Trust, said: ‘‘Skylark’ Durston wasa Portland stonemason

famous for whistling whilehe worked.

“I picked these poems ofhis because they are a beau-tifully appropriate reminderof a time gone by whenPortland had a huge quarry-ing industry.”

“The Electric Palace is a wonderful

part of Bridport’s astonishingly richcultural life and, as a local charity, it

deserves support. I am keen to findsome way for it to acquire a loan – so it
