Dear Friends,

It is good to be home in Aggieland. I was the founding Executive Director of Brazos Animal Shelter, now Aggieland Humane Society. The last 10 years of adventure have been in three other major animal welfare agencies in Texas. I have had experiences in building coalitions and collaborating efforts to change our animal welfare models to save more homeless pets. During my travels, I adopted a dog who was injured and rescued on a highway in a Texas city. Cherrianne had a leg that could not be saved. As her foster home family, we grew to love this little three-legged terrier and later adopted her. She’s no longer a statistic, she is my princess.

With the support of our community donors, we are adding more adoption marketing and more medical rescue cases. Foster networking (for not yet adoption-ready pets), adoption transfers, adoption marketing, social media, and accessible spay/neuter options are some of the initiatives that have been successful in other communities and can be successful here. We couldn’t do it without our foster families, volunteers, and contributors like you.

In a move to give transparency to our monthly progress, we will be placing our statistics on our Web site. We began using an Asilomar Accords report for our new fiscal year, which began in October 2012. See our Web site for detailed information on the pets we receive: www.aggielandhumane.org.

We have committed to using our resources to place every adoptable pet. Our goal is to never have to euthanize because of lack of space. This is a real change in paradigm. People who want to give up their pets must now make a reservation. There is a fee, and we counsel about other options.

The Humane Team of Aggieland Humane Society looks forward to increasing the numbers of lives saved every month thanks to your help.

SuccESS StoriESMatilda “Tilley”When I first met Matilda (Tilley) she was described to me as part kangaroo, and very timid. But when she came home with me, it didn’t take her long to fit right in. She found her “person” in my husband, Doug, and he is rarely in his bed or recliner without Tilley pressed close to his side. My husband and I both have Type 1 Diabetes, and late one night I awoke to find Tilley sitting on top of me, licking my nose. It startled me, and in that moment I realized something was very wrong. My husband was having a hypoglycemic seizure. If Tilley had not woken me that night, who knows what would have happened. I will always hold Tilley in a very special place in my heart, and will never know how to fully repay her - other than tuna and belly rubs, of course.

Matilda “Tildee”We decided to look into adopting a dog from the shelter shortly before Thanksgiving.  I went online and was looking at all of the photos, and I fell in love with a sweet bulldog, Matilda.  We made the trip to Bryan, and as soon as we saw her, we knew she was something special.    It was very important that she get along with our youngest child of three.  Matilda was fabulous! She was very laid back and easy going- no jumping around and acting crazy.  It was a done deal as soon as we saw that!  The big kids love her, and she is still excellent with the youngest.  She’s been stepped on, laid on, accidently kicked, and she never acts aggressive.  She just turns her head and looks at Rylan like “what the heck kid?” rolls her eyes, and goes back to sleep. She is, hands down, the best dog I’ve ever had.  She’s such a sweet girl, and we just love her!

LouieMy boyfriend Ben and I had wanted a Corgi for years. After a long time of searching local shelters, I finally saw a Facebook post from the Aggieland Humane Society featuring Louie, a ten-week-old Corgi mix puppy, and instantly fell in love. Over the past six months, Louie has impacted our lives more than I thought possible. We have enjoyed every minute with him, and he has become the happiest dog I have ever seen. Louie is the kind of dog who can turn anyone’s day around in less than 30 seconds. We can’t imagine our life without our little dog, and we are so grateful that the Aggieland Humane Society helped him find us.

BronsonIt was early April 2011 when my husband and I decided to get another dog as a companion for our two-year-old Doberman. We originally intended to find an adult dog to bring home, but when we walked into the shelter, my eyes immediately fell on a puppy, Bronson.  Although my husband wasn’t sure, I was in love with Bronson’s big brown eyes and white “sock” feet. When we brought Bronson home, my Doberman was a little unsure of how to treat his new “friend,” but today, Bronson and Jethro are best friends. Bronson is the happiest, most loving dog I’ve ever gotten the chance to be around. All of our guests joke that they want to take him home. Thank you Aggieland Humane Society for saving my beautiful Bronson from an uncertain life as a stray, so that he could find his forever home with us.

2012 Financial Report: We have just completed our annual audit and are proud to report that we are in sound financial condition. At the beginning of 2012 we made major program adjustments to our budget to bring expenses in line with projected income. As you can see, we rely on donations, both monetary and in-kind, to do much of our work to help the orphaned pets in Aggieland. Because of this strong community support, we are able to accomplish our mission. Our tax return (IRS 990) and the annual audit are available on our Web site: www.aggielandhumane.org.

Public Support Revenue: Mail campaigns, unsolicited public support, memorial and tribute donations, donations through our Web site, grants from foundations, gifts from estates and life insurance, donor advised funds in the Brazos Valley Community Foundation and two events: Wienerfest and Barkleaders.

Program Services Revenue: Adoption revenue, return to owner fees, surrender fees, microchip and Brazos County tag revenue, the City of College Station and Brazos County shelter fees for services, volunteer orientation fees, and t-shirt and merchandise sales.

Other Revenue: Investment gains, oil and gas revenue, and other.

Disaster Relief Planning is alive and well in Brazos County. The plan takes into account that Port Arthur will bus and transport people and pets in need to Aggieland in the event of a coastal evacuation for Hurricanes.We’ve planned sheltering for both people and animal in the same location, called co-sheltering. People with pets will be on the same property, but in different buildings. If you are interested in becoming a “Disaster Relief Volunteer,” contact us at outreach@aggielandhumane.org for more information. There are FEMA incident command online trainings and certifications that you can begin right away. We are proud to be involved with the Texas A&M university College of Veterinary Medicine teaching program on preparedness to ensure that our graduating veterinarians will be well versed in disaster relief for their future community leadership roles.

Spay neuter rebates for our brazos county Pet owners

107 orphans SavedFluffy, the cat, can be pregnant three or four times this spring and summer. Her kittens, grand-kittens and great-grand-kittens can easily equal 50 cats. If Fluffy is spayed before the spring breeding time (NOW or very soon in Texas) we can prevent the suffering of litters of unwanted, orphaned kittens. If you are feeding a FLuFFy, please spay her in February.

If your neighborhood FLuFFy is feral (wild) or abandoned, please rent a humane trap from the Aggieland Humane Society and take her to your veterinarian for her rabies vaccination and spay. This is call Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR). Wild or feral cats should have an ear tipping done so everyone in the neighborhood, animal control officers and animal shelters can see that the cat is spayed or neutered already.

In addition to making many unplanned kittens, male cats can transmit fatal diseases such fatal diseases as Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS in the cat fights and breeding process. So in addition to his strong odors, a male cat can be a problem boy unless he, too, is fixed (neutered) by a veterinarian. Neutered male cats make fine and loving companion animals.

lEGAcy hEroSThey left a legacy.Jimmy wanted to surprise his lovely bride of many years with a kitten for her birthday. We arranged an introduction, and the little black orphaned kitten was the perfect gift and became part of their family. Our friends Jimmy and Gladys placed the agency in their will and years later the gift became a reality. We are grateful for animal lovers like them who look into the future and think about helping “those that cannot speak for themselves” by supporting the Aggieland Humane Society. I am proud to have known both Jimmy and Gladys Parker.

Martha Holligan’s SurpriseMartha left us the oil and gas mineral rights in her will in the early 2000’s. We knew that the mineral rights would only have value if they were leased or oil and gas were produced. We placed the minerals on the balance sheet for $1 and placed the will in our files.Fast forward to 2012, our friend and attorney, Ernie Bruchez, now oil and gas specialist extraordinaire, helped us secure a mineral lease of the 125 acres. Now we wait for Martha’s gift to bear more fruit and help save orphaned pets! Ernie wrote the founding documents to our agency in 1981, and we appreciate his continued support.If you have mineral rights or producing properties remember the orphaned pets in your plans.

endowment Initiated by friend Janie……Janie Moore was passionate about helping orphaned pets. She moved from Bryan to kansas where she built a local animal shelter. years later, Janie came home to marry her former high school sweet heart, widowed Henry Moore. They enjoyed a special romance before he passed away. When I met Janie she was living in a home off Dilly Shaw Tap Road and on one visit we drank ice tea, talked about special animals and animal shelters, and we shared the porch with her pet rooster “Buddy.” She talked about her intention to leave our animal shelter in her will. Janie indeed left an endowment fund of more than $30,000 at the Brazos Valley Community Foundation for the Brazos Animal Shelter, now Aggieland Humane Society! We are proud to have the perpetual fund to help orphaned pets and plan to build it in the future. In 2012 we added a $4,500 gift to the fund from a matching challenge from the Fries Family Foundation. Thank you to all who made the match possible!

biggest annual fundraiser, was a tremendous success that truly celebrated the human-companion animal bond!

At Wienerfest 2012, we hosted more than 6,500 people; had 300 canine participants

and raised more than $24,000 to support Aggieland Humane Society's mission.

Petsmart  Partnership  Promotes  7  Day  a  Week  Adoptions  

Cats  and  kittens  are  available  for  adoption  7  days  a  week  at  Petsmart.  On  Saturdays  a  team  for  mobile  adoptions  brings  dogs  and  puppies  from  11  am-­‐2  pm.    We  have  family  teams  (mother  daughter),  roommate  teams  and  specially  trained  adoption  volunteers  that  meet  various  foster  families  and  volunteers  to  adopt  out  pets.

Our  New  Name…..New  Business  Model….New  Location    

We  are  proud  to  have  signed  a  trademark  and  licensing  agreement  with  Texas  A&M  University,  enabling  us  to  become  Aggieland  Humane  Society.  We  are  settled  into  our  new  center  at  5359  Leonard  Road  near  the  Brazos  Valley  Expo  Complex.    

Saving  every  healthy  friendly  pet  in  our  care,  today.  We  envision  a  day  when  we  have  enough  resources  to  save  all  our  treatable  sick  and  infirm  animals.  Currently  our  volunteers  frequently  step  up  and  rescue  with  us  by  becoming  our  foster  families  who  care  for  the  sick  and  raise  the  litters  that  are  too  young  for  adoption.  Waggie  Petzone  volunteers  to  take  the  occational  behavioral  challenge  for  rehabilitation.
