Forsyth, Dr. Mary J. Occupation: Teacher and physician.

I.R. Jan. 24, 1878 - The Detroit papers of January 8th, in publishing a statement

of the work of the Woman’s Hospital and Foundling’s Home, make a very honorable allusion to Dr. Mary Forsyth, formerly a teacher in the Ironton schools. The report says: As shown by the physician’s report, 258 women and children have been cared for during the past year. Of this number 130 were adults and 128 infants, the total being larger than that of any previous year. Of the adult patients, 4 have died - one with heart disease, both complaints being of long standing and incurable. Only one maternity patient and 24 children have died during the year, thus making the whole death rate less than 11 per cent. This, I think, is much lower than that of any hospital in the United States; and an eminent Indiana physician said that he thought that the facts should be published in the United States Hospital Report, as he knew of nothing that could compare with them. That the result is due to the skill and care of the physician in charge, Dr. M. J. Forsyth, there can be no doubt. Over 50 women have taken their infants out with them.

I. R. May 7, 1903 - GRADUATES AS DENTIST. Ironton Girl Alone in a Class of Eighty-One. - The Cincinnati Times-Star Tuesday morning has a splendid picture of Miss Jennie D. Jenkins and the following comment:

“A pretty Ironton (Ohio) belle is the only woman in a class of 81 to graduate from the Ohio Dental College in the class of 1903. When Jennie Jenkins graduated from the High School at Ironton at the age of 15 years her mother said that Jennie should be a music teacher and so Jennie tried. She practiced and practiced, but it wasn’t any use, for the music wasn’t there. One day she shut down the piano quietly and with determination faced a gently looking mother.

“I’m not going to study music more,’ she said. ‘It’s no use, mother; I’m going to be a dentist.’

“And no amount of persuading could change the girl’s plan. Her brother, Dr. C. W. Miller, of Ironton, was a dentist and the next morning she went down to his office. To humor her he taught her how to work in his laboratory. In a short time she was so valuable that he immediately recognized her evident bent in the dentistry line. So Jennie and her brother said that Jennie should go to a dental college and a mother careful of her daughter, packed up bag and baggage and came to Cincinnati to live for three years while Jennie learned to pull teeth and acquired sundry other important knowledge in dentistry. For three years, while her brother boarded in Ironton and saw a family reunion in dreams only, Mrs. Lillie Jenkins and her ambitious little daughter have lived at 417 Hopkins street. Following the graduation exercises Mrs. Jenkins and her daughter go back to Ironton, where Jennie’s brother has arranged an office for his little sister. For Jennie absolutely refuses to go into partnership and office with her brother. She will be the only woman dentist in Ironton and a distinct novelty in that thriving town. And it’s ten to one that numerous epidemics of toothache will be the customary condition of the entire lot of “best catches” among the beans of Ironton this summer. Miss Jenkins’ father has a position in the Bessemer Steel Works in Bessemer, Ala.

I.R. Aug. 27, 1891 - TOURING EAST by B. L. AT LARGE IN VIRGINIA - On Board C. & O. Train, Virginia, Aug. 22.

Dear Register: I am off for a trip. Am going to visit the effects East. Mrs. Lawton is with me and we are skipping along over the C & O road, seeing it all by daylight, devouring the grand scenery and stopping at some of the points of interest by the way.

We left Ironton Thursday noon. That night we stopped with Dr. and Mrs. Lester Keller, in the heart of the striking scenery and extensive coal operations of New River. They live in a little cottage whose front door is only six feet from the railroad track. The trains thunder past and sound as though they would tear through the house, but they are used to the noise, and the hurry-skurry of the trains is music to them.

The walls of the little house are profusely hung with paintings, the work of Mrs. Keller, who devotes a large portion of her time to work of this kind. The immediate vicinity affords countless pretty views and she has made many sketches of the river and mountain side. Mrs. Keller’s art work is really of a high order. She has been invited to contribute paintings of West Virginia scenery for the women’s department of the World’s Fair. A teacher in the art school at Cincinnati is spending the summer with Mrs. Keller and is giving her instructions in portrait work.

Dr. Keller’s house is half way between the stations of Fire Creek and Echo, which are only half a mile apart. They are the stations for the Central Coal Co. and Wm. Buery, Cooper & Co. respectively. Dr. Keller is employed as the physician for the operatives of both these companies, and it is a very busy field of labor for him. The close proximity of these stations indicates how active the coal and coke business on New River is……(rest about the coal fields)…
